SCC WELLNESS GOAL In 2019/2020, the SCCHS SCC has identified the need to inform and educate parents about the effects of vaping on teenagers. Part of that goal will focus upon using the monthly newsletter to share information with parents and guardians about the growing trend of vaping among our adolescent population.

I. Why do teenagers vape?

Because a friend or family member vapes.

Because vapes come in a variety of flavours

Because teenagers believe that e-cigarettes are less harmful than other forms of tobacco

II. What can parents look for to see if their child is vaping?

Your child might be more thirsty than normal.

Your child might be looking for more flavor in their food (salt, spices) since vaping takes away flavor perception.

Nose bleeds happen more often with kids who vape.

Acne becomes more prevalent with kids who vape.

You might see unfamiliar USB drives, battery chargers, or spare parts. If your teen is carrying unfamiliar tech-looking devices, or if there are interesting items in the garbage can, ask your teen what is up!

SCCHS Report Cards will be available on Wednesday,

November 13, 2019. Report Cards will be

located in MSS ONLY. No report

cards will be emailed or sent

home.

Grade 9 students will not receive a report card on November 13. However, once MSS is completely operational, you will be able to log onto MSS to

check your grade 9 child’s marks and progress to

date. Please contact your child’s teachers or Mr. Kelln if you have any questions about your

child’s marks.

REPORT CARDS/PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS We are happy to share the following information with you regarding the new MySchoolSask (MSS) Family Portal and want to thank you for your patience while we work to get the new system up and running to help connect students, their families and the school to allow for the best possible communication regarding your student(s).

Attached at the end of this newsletter are the instructions to log in and use the MySchoolSask (MSS) Family Portal. You should also have received an email from MSS that included your username and a temporary password. Once report cards have been completed, you will be able to log in and see your child’s progress. If you do not receive an email by November 6, 2019, please contact the school at 306-773-2801.

The Ministry announced that the very first login to MSS by parents does not work on a mobile device such as a phone. They have informed us that parents have to do the initial login on a computer (Chromebooks work). After parents have done that first login on a computer, they should be able to use a phone or mobile device on subsequent logins (this seems to work from our testing). The Ministry has elevated this issue with Fujitsu, but until it is fixed, parents will have to do their first login with a computer. Also, today we have been alerted that there are some errors with how student marks are being displayed in each student’s gradebook. There is work being done to resolve the issue. In the meantime, students and parents will not be able to view marks on MSS until the errors have been fixed. Parent Teacher Interviews have been scheduled for: Thursday, November 21, 2019 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm Tuesday, November 26, 2019 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm Interviews can be booked online using OPTIS (the online parent teacher interview program – the link is on your school web page under Resource Links) https://secure.parentinterviews.com/scchs. Instructions for using OPTIS can also be located on the school website https://www.chinooksd.ca/school/scchs/Pages/default.aspx#/=.

Good two-way communication between families and schools is necessary for your academic success. If you wish to speak to your child’s teachers, please use the Staff Directory on the school webpage, to locate their email address or book a time during Parent Teacher Interviews to discuss your child’s learning.

News from Chinook Cyber School

This month’s spotlight features Rob Englot. Rob has been involved with distance learning longer than the Chinook Cyber School has been around. As a senior Science and Math teacher, Rob’s skill set was drawn on to deliver synchronous courses to schools without Science and Math teachers in Chinook. When CCS was formed, Rob joined the team part-time and shared his knowledge with the rest of us as we gained more understanding of online learning. Rob is currently teaching Math Foundations 30, PreCalculus 30, Physics 30 and Calculus 30 for Chinook students. Delivering from Vanguard in the east part of Chinook, Rob is known from one side of Chinook to the other.

Rob has been heavily involved in the sporting community in Vanguard School. Mr. E and volleyball - the two are synonymous.

Fun Fact: CCS staff travelled ~3720 km supporting/meeting students in September. That’s like driving to Disneyland minus the rollercoasters!
