THE HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF SUNSET COUNTRY CLUB

In 1910 August A. Busch Sr. decided Saint Louis needed a social club in south St. Louis County. He wanted a hilly, undeveloped, wooded site that would permit privacy and an opportunity to share in nature's beauty. This goal was achieved when he purchased 40.55 acres of rolling land in what is now the City of Sunset Hills. It was on this land Anheuser-Busch built a facility known as the Sunset Inn. For the next six years, the Sunset Inn served as one of the finest dining and entertainment facilities in the St. Louis area. Its popularity led to an interest in expanding it to offer increased entertainment for the entire family. More land was purchased and development plans were finalized. In 1916 a search was conducted for someone to design a golf course that would be challenging and take advantage of the site's natural beauty. The search resulted in the selection of Foulis brothers—Robert, Jim and Dave - among the earliest golf professionals and course architects in the United States. Natives of Saint Andrews, Scotland, "the birthplace of golf," Robert became a resident of St. Louis in 1901 and designed and constructed most area courses built before 1930. In addition to designing Sunset's course, he also helped lay out other prestigious courses in the area, including the original Bellerive, Glen Echo, Algonquin, and the Bogey-Log Cabin Club courses. Following construction of the course, Sunset built a swimming pool in 1918, becoming one of the area’s first outdoor pools. This quickly became a family favorite as the St. Peter’s vein salt-water fed pool offered therapeutic benefits as well. In keeping with the Sunset tradition of being a trend setter, it was the first pool in the St. Louis area to permit men to swim "topless." The original Sunset Inn was so far out in the country it had to be virtually self-contained. Buildings for the chef and waitresses were located near the Inn, so help would always be available. Following World War I, the first clubhouse, as well as men’s and ladies’ locker rooms, was built. Now Sunset was a legitimate golf club. Subsequent purchases permitted the expansion of the course and other facilities, such as the tennis courts. Sunset retains an intimacy with nature by virtue of its large number of non-parallel fairways, as well as being one of the most interesting and challenging golf courses in the metro area. Sunset, like most private clubs, suffered through the years of The Great Depression and temporarily closed its doors in 1937. A short while later, a group of golf enthusiasts approached Anheuser-Busch to again open it, which they did in 1938. In 1944, Anheuser-Busch decided to sell the club to the membership. This sale was completed in 1945. Sunset now encompasses 170 acres of rolling hills covered with one of the area's finest arrays of hardwoods. The autumn months offer breathtaking views of brilliantly colored leaves. The large, beautiful living room is designed for gracious entertainment of family or friends. The Sunset Room, the Fairway Room, and adjoining Player's Lounge, provide pleasurable dining and outstanding cuisine. Sunset's Clubhouse sits on one of the highest elevations in South County providing a spectacular western view of the golf course and the Meramec River Valley and Ozark foothills beyond. A large, attractive banquet room, along with smaller private meeting rooms for business or social get-togethers complete the dining areas. Men's and Ladies' Locker Rooms and Card Rooms, and of course, a large, well-stocked Golf Shop round out the main building. Sunset offers a zero-entry, resort-style swimming pool along with a comprehensive youth swimming program. A six-week summer swim league. for children ages 5-18, is also available. A top flight tennis pro and four clay courts complete the recreational facilities. In addition, Sunset members have access to a twelve-court indoor tennis facility. The Club offers youth programs in tennis and golf, and conducts parent-youth tournaments in all sports. Sunset has both 9 and 18 hole women's golf groups and has liberalized the "family hours" for golf, making it easy to play at convenient times. In addition, Sunset is one of the few golf courses in St. Louis that does not require tee times, making it among the more family oriented clubs in the region. Sunset Country Club represents a beautiful combination of land use and environmental preservation. Its magnificent rolling hills and woods provide both a bird sanctuary and animal habitat. Golf at Sunset is truly a walk in the splendor of nature without man-made intrusions.

Our facilities are known for their exceptional condition and cleanliness. The Housekeeping Department works tirelessly to maintain that reputation. Additional labor charges may be incurred for special room set ups, multiple changes or for other instances deemed beyond normal procedures. All costs to repair any damage done to the property by guests, attendees, independent contractors or other agents are the responsibility of the host. Our facility is fully protected by an automatic fire sprinkler system. In addition, fire hose cabinets and fire extinguishers are located throughout the facility. Exit doors, exit lights, fire alarm sending stations, fire hose cabinets, and fire extinguishers are prohibited from being concealed, obstructed, or tampered with at any time. ADVERTISEMENT, SIGNS AND BANNERS Signs, banners, political messages, and flags that promote the event may be hung on the exterior of the facility only with consideration and approval from Club Management. This not only helps us maintain an orderly event setting, but also prohibits unauthorized advertising or other messages being installed by individual exhibitors or other events, which may occupy different portions of the building. Contact Management for details on availability and authorized locations, and any fees which may be involved. There shall be no public advertising, public notices, promotions or coverage in any media (newspaper, radio, television or general circulation publications) of any event to be conducted at the Club without the express written permission of the Board of Directors. Any violations of the rule will result in the immediate cancellation of the function.

SUNSET COUNTRY CLUB GUIDELINES FOR VENDORS The following guidelines and rules are proposed to enhance the understanding and working relationships between our independent vendors and the Club.

1. Access to rooms may be limited due to other functions. Please verify the availability and scheduled access time prior to your function. Rooms will be available for decorating 2 hours prior to the function unless other arrangements are made directly with the Banquet Manager. All vendors are required to contact the Banquet Manager to arrange for set up and pick up times. These times must be strictly adhered to due to other events taking place at the Club.

2. Club decorations are to be removed and replaced by Club staff only. If any change in décor is desired, please make arrangements in advance or speak with the manager on duty.

3. We request florists to be considerate in cleaning up any spills or droppings made during set up. The staff can provide florists with appropriate cleaning equipment. There may be an additional “clean up charge” to the host if extra services are required due to improper care taken by a florist or decorator.

4. The Club prohibits using any adhesive or nails on any surface. 5. Our first obligation is to our members. Please be considerate when parking vehicles, using the front entrance, or

creating a work area. The Club is continually on display and being shown to guest by our members. 6. We request that you inform your vendors of the Club’s dress code. 7. Alcoholic beverage service is not permitted for entertainers, photographers and other outside vendors. 8. Any bands playing outside must end by 11:00 p.m. per Sunset Hills city ordinance.
