SCAT DADDY WELLREPRESENTED IN IRELAND

By John Berry

Pilgrims doing the rounds of the extremely successful and

popular Irish Stallion Trail will have seen some exciting new

stallions as well as the established stars. Possibly the most

familiar of the new recruits on view was the charismatic grey

sprinter Caravaggio, a winner at Royal Ascot in each of the past

two seasons. Possibly the least familiar was El Kabeir, a

6-year-old who had never left the United States prior to his

recent arrival at Yeomanstown Stud and whose best win came in

the G2 Kentucky Jockey Club S. at Churchill Downs in 2014.

Despite their differing profiles, though, there is one strong link

between the pair: both are providing Irish breeders with a

valuable opportunity to tap into the genes of their sire, the late

and much lamented Scat Daddy (Johannesburg).

In the current era which has seen a worrying narrowing of the

spread of sire-lines, it is always a pleasure to see a dominant

stallion emerge from one of the less ubiquitous lines. Scat Daddy

did descend from the seemingly ever-present Northern Dancer

(Nearctic) but not via one of the usual sources. So many of the

Northern Dancer-line stallions (particularly in Europe) come via

Sadler's Wells or Danzig that Scat Daddy, who descended from

the great patriarch via Johannesburg, Hennessy, Storm Cat and

Storm Bird, could be seen as a breath of fresh air.

It was already clear by the time of his premature death in 2015

at the age of only 11 that Scat Daddy was an extremely good

stallion. It is now clear that he was a great one.

Scat Daddy was a very good racehorse. He was one of the best

juveniles in the USA in 2006 and then one of the best

3-year-olds the following year, when his form was good enough

to see him start third favourite in the GI Kentucky Derby.

However, he ran badly in that race and was found subsequently

to have damaged a tendon. As so often proves to be the case

with tendon injuries, even minor ones, this setback meant that

Scat Daddy's season was over. Inevitably, his retirement was

announced the following month. In this case, retirement meant

recruitment to the Coolmore roster at Ashford Stud in Kentucky,

Michael Tabor having had the foresight to buy a significant share

in the horse following his GII Sanford S. triumph 11 months

previously.

Scat Daddy | Coolmore

Scat Daddy Well Represented in Ireland Cont. from p1

At the time of Scat Daddy=s retirement, his sire Johannesburg

was looking as if he might be an influential link in the Storm Bird

branch of the Northern Dancer line. Johannesburg had been an

outstanding 2-year-old in 2001, emulating the achievement of

Arazi (Blushing Groom {Fr}) 10 years previously of being

champion 2-year-old of both Europe and the USA. Scat Daddy

was a member of Johannesburg=s second crop. When he retired

from racing in the summer of 2007 and moved to Ashford Stud,

Scat Daddy joined a roster on which his father was still very

popular at a fee of $65,000. However, Johannesburg=s status

soon began to wane. His fee was hugely reduced in advance of

the 2009 season, and he was subsequently moved on (to Japan).

As his father fell from favour, so did Scat Daddy, despite still

being totally unproven at stud. His fee in his first season (2008)

was $30,000, but it had already been reduced to $10,000 for his

fourth season before he had even had a runner.

At the start of the current century, the Storm Bird branch of

the Northern Dancer line looked set to thrive thanks to Storm

Cat, North America=s Champion Sire of 1999 and 2000. Storm

Cat=s best son Giant=s Causeway was a champion racehorse in

Europe in 2000 and has gone on to top the North American

General Sires= Table three times (2009, 2010, 2012). But it is

now looking as if Johannesburg, a son of Storm Cat=s Grade

I-winning son Hennessy, is the branch=s key component. Scat

Daddy is largely responsible for this situation.

Scat Daddy began having runners in 2011 (when, as mentioned

above, his nominations were readily available for a mere

$10,000). He had an instant advertisement in Europe that year

when his well-named chestnut son Daddy Long Legs carried

Michael Tabor=s colours to victory in the G2 Royal Lodge S. at

Newmarket.

(Ironically, this proved to be a slightly misleading

advertisement as Daddy Long Legs, a lanky stayer, is far from the

typical son of Scat Daddy. He is, though, true to type in that he

had plenty of ability and was effective on both turf and dirt, as

he confirmed the following spring when taking the G2 UAE

Derby at Meydan).

Since then, Scat Daddy=s reputation has grown year on year. It

was high when he died in 2015 and is even higher now. The

brilliantly fast No Nay Never really put Scat Daddy on the map

with a string of excellent performances spread over England,

France and the USA in 2013 and =14, at the ages of two and

three. His feat of registering a superb win as a juvenile at Royal

Ascot and then following up in the G1 Prix Morny at Deauville

was matched in 2016 by the brilliant Lady Aurelia, another

inmate of Wesley Ward=s barn. Lady Aurelia then joined

Caravaggio in scoring at the Royal Meeting in both 2016 and =17,

her second victory there coming in the G1 King=s Stand S.) Lady

Aurelia=s first Royal Ascot victory made her the second

successive Scat Daddy filly to take the G2 Queen Mary S. for

Wesley Ward, following the triumph in 2015 by Acapulco, who

had gone on to finish second at weight-for-age in the G1

Nunthorpe S. at York later in the summer.

Cont. p3

Scat Daddy Well Represented in Ireland Cont.

Furthermore, Caravaggio and Lady Aurelia were not the only

Scat Daddy offspring to score at Royal Ascot in 2017, where the

stallion was also represented by Sandringham H. heroine Con Te

Partiro, another of Wesley Ward=s charges.

No doubt inspired by the early success of Daddy Long Legs, the

Coolmore team has more recently made sure that plenty of sons

of Scat Daddy have found their way into Aidan O=Brien=s

Ballydoyle stable. Caravaggio, impressive winner of his first six

races including the G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot and the G1

Keeneland Phoenix S. at The Curragh as a 2-year-old in 2016 and

the G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot in 2017, has been the

star so far. However, he might not hold that honour indefinitely

with the stable=s current 3-year-olds including the Scat Daddy

colts Mendelssohn, Sioux Nation and Seahenge. Last term the

former (who had cost $3,000,000 as a yearling at Keeneland in

September 2016) stamped himself as a live Classic contender on

whichever side of the Atlantic his connections choose when he

followed up his second place in the G1 Dewhurst S. at

Newmarket by taking the G1 Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf at Del

Mar. Sioux Nation won the G2 Norfolk S. at Royal Ascot and the

G1 Keeneland Phoenix S. at The Curragh while Seahenge (a

$750,000 Keeneland yearling) landed the G2 Champagne S. at

Doncaster.

To date, Scat Daddy=s worldwide tally of progeny Grade/Group

1 victories stands at 43, the latest top-level strike having come

when G1 Kentucky Oaks runner-up Daddy=s Lil Darling took the

G1 American Oaks at Santa Anita at the end of December. That

was the seventh Grade/Group 1 triumph of 2017 for a son or

daughter of Scat Daddy, a total which included the victory in the

GI Beverly D S. at Arlington of Dacita (Chi) who ranks as arguably

the best of several stars produced by the stallion during his

South American shuttling stints. Cont. p4

Scat Daddy Well Represented in Ireland Cont.

Scat Daddy, of course, is still unproven as a sire of sires. But he

looks to have a very good

chance of making a huge

posthumous contribution in this

respect. The first yearlings by No

Nay Never (who stands at

Coolmore in Ireland) made a

very positive impression at the

sales in the autumn of 2017. No

fewer than 24 of his yearlings

fetched six-figures sums, headed

by the colt out of Muravka (Ire)

(High Chaparral {Ire}) who was

bought by JS Company for

850,000gns in Book 1 of the

Tattersalls October Sale. The

average price of the 56 who

were sold was 107,509gns. Collectively, they appear to give

their sire an excellent shot at ending 2018 as Europe=s leading

first-season sire.

Caravaggio has now joined No Nay Never at Coolmore; while

El Kabeir has come to Ireland to stand at Yeomanstown Stud.

Simultaneously, the super-tough

Tu Brutus (Chi), a nine-time

winner who scored in stakes

company on six occasions, takes

up stud duties at Crestwood

Farm in Kentucky. All three look

sure to be popular. Caravaggio

needs no introduction, and a

recent reminder of his charisma

was provided when his yearling

half-brother by American

Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile)

fetched $1 million at

Keeneland=s January Sale.

Coincidentally, the similarities

between El Kabeir and Caravaggio

are not limited to the fact that both are fast sons of Scat Daddy.

Both are greys, with El Kabeir=s grey coat coming from his

maternal grandsire Unbridled=s Song (Unbridled). Cont. p5

El Kabeir | Yeomanstown Stud

TDN EUROPE/INTERNATIONAL • PAGE 5 OF 8 • THETDN.COM TUESDAY • 16 JANUARY, 2018

Scat Daddy Well Represented in Ireland Cont.

A Grade II winner at two and a Grade I place-getter at three, El

Kabeir comes from a family packed with stakes winners. His

stakes-winning granddam Rose Colored Lady (Formal Dinner)

bred four stakes winners, and he is sure to be well supported

standing alongside another great grey, Dark Angel (Ire)

(Acclamation {GB}). Tu Brutus, a full-brother to the dual Chilean

Group 1 winner El Bromista (Chi), scored in Group 3 company in

his homeland in 2015 and in the Flat Out S. at Belmont Park last

year. He looks sure to be popular as the only son of Scat Daddy

currently at stud in Kentucky.

The saga of Scat Daddy has been one of the big success stories

of the international bloodstock world in recent years

(notwithstanding, of course, the tragedy of the horse=s

premature death) and it is going to be fascinating to see how it

develops over the next few years. He is providing a great boost

to one of the less celebrated branches of the Northern Dancer

line, resurrecting the brilliance formerly displayed by his sire

Johannesburg. The latter=s influence, incidentally, is also thriving

in Ireland thanks to his Group 2-winning son Red Jazz, who

stands at Ballyhane Stud and who turned out to be one of

Europe=s most successful first-season sires of 2017.

RECORD 2018 PRIZE-MONEY FOR ASCOT Horses running at Ascot this year will be competing for a

record prizemoney fund of almost ,13.5 million. This figure,

which excludes the industry-owned QIPCO British Champions

Day, represents an increase of ,1.2 million, 10% up on the 2017

figure of ,12.2 million. The track=s headline festival, Royal Ascot,

will this year benefit from a prizemoney pool of over ,7 million

while the G1 QIPCO King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. will be

worth an all time high of ,1.25 million. The minimum race value

at the Royal meeting in June will be up ,10,000 to ,90,000

while the benchmark for Group 1 races that week will be

,500,000, up from ,400,000 in 2017.

Commenting on the increase, Ascot Racecourse Director of

Racing Nick Smith said, "Our total prizemoney this year is over

,13 million for the first time, with Royal Ascot well over ,7

million, which are important milestones. Royal Ascot prize

money has increased 62% since 2012 [,4.5 million], with the

annual programme having increased 46% in that period. This has

been important in terms of maintaining the international appeal

of Royal Ascot and the King George and in terms of

appropriately funding the rapid development of the racing

programme in recent years, headlined by the inauguration of

the G1 Commonwealth Cup in 2015 and the elevation of the

Queen's Vase to Group 2 last year, both with excellent results.@

Guy Henderson, Ascot=s chief executive added, "Under our

statutory racing trust, all of Ascot's returns are invested for the

benefit of horsemen, our race-goers and off course followers,

both in the UK and internationally. In order to continue to

attract the best horses to run at Ascot, and with the Royal

Meeting a shop window for international investment in British

racing, it is important that we offer as competitive prizemoney

as we can, particularly at the high end.@

ATR TO BROADCAST PEGASUS Viewers of At The Races can look forward to the dedicated

racing channel broadcasting live from Gulfstream Park Jan. 27,

when the $16-million Pegasus World Cup Invitational forms the

centrepiece of the coverage. Last year=s inaugural running saw a

dominant victory for 2016 GI Breeders= Cup Classic winner

Arrogate (Unbridled=s Song) who later added the G1 Dubai

World Cup to his CV. Viewers from Ireland and Britain can watch

the Jamie Osborne-trained Toast Of New York (Thewayyouare)

take on 2017 Breeders= Cup Classic winner Gun Runner (Candy

Ride {Arg}). ATR will mix studio coverage with award-winning

NBC output, showing the Gulfstream Park undercard prior to the

feature race which is scheduled for 10:40 p.m.

STALLION TRAIL HAILED A SUCCESS The team at Irish Thoroughbred Marketing have expressed

their satisfaction over another successful Irish Stallion Trail

which took place last Friday and Saturday. Over 2,000 people

took part in the trail and in addition to the many Irish breeders

and fans that participated, there were also visitors from France,

Germany, Britain and the Czech Republic.

Gerry Childs who is a member of the British-based syndicate

Elite Racing Club, who enjoyed unbelievable success with their

homebred mare Marsha (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) last year is a

regular visitor and commented, AThis is my third visit to Ireland

for the ITM Irish Stallion Trail. I adore seeing the stars of the past

and how they are faring as stallions. Highlights have been

Coolmore Stud, seeing Kalanisi at Boardsmill Stud and meeting

the wonderful people here.@ Cont. p7

Stallion Trail Hailed a Success Cont.

Participating stud farms were similarly positive, with Niamh

Woods of Rathbarry Stud commenting, AWe=ve had a very busy

two days showing our stallions in both Rathbarry and Glenview

Studs, with 400 visiting the two farms. We are very thankful to

all the people who came to view them and extend a big thank

you to ITM for once again organising this excellent event.@

Charles O=Neill, CEO of ITM added, ASince its inception in 2015,

the Irish Stallion Trail has gone from strength to strength, and

this year was no exception. The feedback from a record number

of participating stud farms has been extremely positive, but

probably more impressive is the number of positive messages

from visitors who were blown away by the whole experience. A

massive thank you has to go out to all the farms for their time

and hospitality, because that is what helps make the Trail such a

success.@

ROGER CURTIS, 68, PASSES AWAY Former trainer Roger Curtis has died at the age of 68 after a

long battle with cancer, Racing Post Reported on Monday. Curtis

was based latterly in Lambourn and during his training career he

saddled 248 winners across both codes, the last one coming in

2013 when Elegant Olive (GB) (Alflora {Ire}) won at Huntingdon.

While predominantly a national hunt trainer, Curtis enjoyed

success on the flat most notably with Zafisio (Ire) (Efisio {GB})

who he took over the training of in 2009 following his Lambourn

neighbour Paul Blockley=s ban from training.

Zafisio won a pair of Group 3 races in France and Germany for

Curtis that year and also finished second in the G2

Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen at Cologne in Germany. Curtis is survived

by his partner Dawn and three children from his first marriage,

Jos, Ned and Capella.

the news that the Chris Waller-trained mare is scheduled to take

in a barrier trial at Warwick Farm on Jan. 22. With her seasonal

Waller intends to give the three-time G1 Cox Plate heroine a

Another top-class filly, She Will Reign (Aus) (Manhattan Rain

Warwick Farm on Monday. Gary Portelli=s G1 Golden Slipper and

G1 Moir S. heroine was partnered by Ben Melham over 800m

and the jockey kept her on a tight rein as she finished second, 1

debut at Santa Anita, rebounded from a pair of short-priced

defeats to take the Smarty Jones S. wire-to-wire at Oaklawn

Park Monday, continuing an unprecedented run of success for

Bob Baffert trained 3-year-olds at the Hot Springs oval.

The bay, who sold for just $30,000 to William Danny Pate as a

Keeneland September yearling, was bought by Phoenix

Thoroughbred III for $625,000 at last year=s OBS March sale

after breezing a quarter-mile in :20 1/5. Scoring by 4 1/4 lengths

in his Sept. 30 unveiling, Mourinho ran second at 3-10 after

dueling on a fast pace in the Speakeasy S. in Arcadia Oct. 15.

Favored again in the GIII Bob Hope S. while removing blinkers

Nov. 11 at Del Mar, he chased returning Springboard Mile S.

hero Greyvitos (Malibu Moon) and settled for the runner-up

spot once again.

Hammered down to 3-5 with the shades back on in this first

two-turn test, Mourinho broke alertly and, after turning back an

early bid for the lead by Tap Daddy (Scat Daddy), showed the way

in the clear through splits of :23.33 and :48.09. The scratched-

down quintet was within three lengths of each other heading into

the far turn, where Drayden Van Dyke put the pedal to the metal

and started to open up on the favorite. Cont. p3

PEDIGREE INSIGHTS: INSTILLED REGARDby Andrew Caulfield

When a 2-year-old son of Arch sold for $1,050,000 in Florida

last March, the successful bidder, Lawrence Best of OXO Equine,

commented that the youngster was Aa very good-looking horse@

and a hard, hard runner, while Mike Ryan, the underbidder, was

sufficiently impressed to describe the colt as a Ahell of a horse,@

before adding that Ahe makes the hair stand up on the back of

your head.@

That's quite a compliment from a man of Ryan's vast

experience and it is beginning to look as though his instincts

were right. The Arch colt--Instilled Regard--now boasts a record

of 5-2-2-1 and this progressive performer was impressive in

winning the GIII LeComte S. Saturday at Fair Grounds.

Mourinho turns for home in command | Coady Photography

Mourinho Calls Shots in Smarty Jones Score cont.

Springboard place runner and second choice Combatant (Scat

Daddy) was in a bit tight at the rail before angling out into the

clear three-eighths from home. By that time, however,

Mourinho had built up a considerable advantage, and

Combatant was only slightly able to eat into that cushion in the

stretch, and the front-runner coasted home a bit more than

three lengths to the good. Combatant was well clear for place

honors.

AHe=s a horse we get to relax in the morning, so the blinkers I

think helped him stay focused and it benefitted him,@ said Van

Dyke after the race. ABob said, >We=re the fastest horse in the

race, so get the lead and go from there,= and luckily it worked

out.@

For his win, Mourinho earned 10 points in the Road to the

Kentucky Derby standings, with the second through fourth

finishers picking up four, two and one points respectively. Click

The LeComte may only be a Grade III, but its past

winners include several which have gone on to

better things, including Oxbow (2013 GI

Preakness S.), Ron The Greek (three Grade I

successes, including the Santa Anita H. and Jockey

Club Gold Cup) and Hard Spun (2007 GI King's Bishop S., after

finishing second in the GI Kentucky Derby and third in the

Preakness).

The surprising aspect of Instilled Regard's story is that this very

well-connected colt had RNA'd at only $110,000 just six months

before he sold for roughly ten times that amount. His pedigree

is solid and carries the Claiborne hallmark, even though he was

bred by KatieRich Farms. His sire Arch spent his stallion career at

Claiborne, as did Seeking The Gold, Nijinsky and Riva Ridge, the

stallions responsible for Instilled Regard's second, third and

fourth dams, all of whom were bred by Ogden Phipps. Cont. p5

Instilled Regard | Hodges Photography/Jamie Hernandez

Pedigree Insights: Instilled Regard cont.

Instilled Regard is a member of the penultimate crop by Arch,

who died in January 2016 at the age of 21. Arch's overall record

as a stallion can be gauged from the way his fee fell and then

recovered very well. Having been forced into retirement by

problems with an ankle, the son of Kris S. started his career at a

fee of $20,000 in 1999. By his fourth and fifth seasons his fee

was down to $15,000 but by 2004 and 2005 he was available for

$5,000 and $7,500, respectively.

The straight-talking Seth Hancock commented in 2003 that

AArch is not doing what we hoped he might do, but you can't say

he's that big a disappointment because no son of Kris S. made it.

I thought with his female family he would overcome that, but so

far he hasn't and it doesn't look like he will.@

Anyone could have been forgiven for thinking that Arch's days

at Claiborne were numbered but he pulled off a remarkable

recovery, to the extent that his fee began to rally and his last

three years were spent at a fee of $40,000.

It turned out that a bit of patience was required with some of

Arch's best winners (which wasn't too surprising in view of

Arch's own record, which included just one start as a

2-year-old). For example, his first crop contained Les Arcs, a

gelding who won the G1 Golden Jubilee and G1 July Cup as a

6-year-old in 2006. His second crop was led by Prince Arch,

winner of the GI Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup H. as a

4-year-old in 2005 and more recently we have seen Grade I

victories for the 6-year-olds Hymn Book (Donn H. in 2012) and

Grand Arch (Shadwell Turf Mile in 2015).

However, his fourth crop contained a pair of fillies who shone as

3-year-olds, with Pine Island taking the GI Alabama S. and Arravale

the GI Del Mar Oaks and the GI E.P. Taylor S. Pine Island and

Arravale both scored over a mile and a quarter, as had Arch when

he gained his biggest success, in the GI Super Derby. Cont. p6

Arch | Claiborne Farm

Pedigree Insights: Instilled Regard cont.

With Roberto and Danzig as his grandsires, Arch was very

capable of siring smart turf performers, but Instilled Regard is

the latest in a lengthy line of good

dirt runners, headed by Blame,

2010's champion older male

whose victories included that

stunning defeat of Zenyatta in the

GI Breeders' Cup Classic. The list

also features such as It Tiz Well

(last year's GI Cotillion S.) and

Archarcharch (GI Arkansas Derby).

His total of Graded/Group winners

now stands at 36, which is pretty

good going considering that most

of his early crops numbered fewer

than 50 named foals. It is worth

adding that Blame and Hymn Book

are members of his 7,500-dollar

2006 crop.

Naturally for a stallion based at Claiborne, Arch was mated to a

lot of mares sired by Mr Prospector or his sons, with daughters

of Seeking The Gold being by far the most popular option. There

are now 80 foals of racing age bred this way and among them

are Blame and his fellow Grade I winner Pine Island, as well as

the GIII Iowa Derby winner Bent On Bourbon and the Listed

winner Albasharah. These four stakes winners represent only an

unexceptional 5% of the sample,

but now we have Instilled Regard

with a second dam by Seeking The

Gold.

Needless to say, this second dam

by Seeking The Gold isn't any old

daughter of the 1988 Dwyer S.

and Super Derby winner. She is

Heavenly Prize, an eight-times

Grade I winner at the ages of two,

three and four who was 1994's

champion 3-year-old filly.

This is truly a blue-blooded

pedigree. Instilled Regard's fifth

dam is Lady Pitt, America's

champion 3-year-old filly of 1966.

Lady Pitt had the type of record

it's hard to imagine nowadays, as she notched up 14 starts as a

juvenile and another 16 at three, when her wins included the

Mother Goose S. and the CCA Oaks. She raced 47 times in all.

Pedigree Insights: Instilled Regard cont. Although Lady Pitt's sons included The Liberal Member, winnerof the GI Brooklyn H., it was largely her daughters who ensuredthat her name lives on. Three of them produced graded stakeswinners, including her Buckpasser fillies Bank Of England (damof the Reviewer colt Comptroller) and Queen Pot (dam of thesmart European miler King of Clubs). However, it was Lady Pitt's Riva Ridge filly Blitey--the fourthdam of Instilled Regard--who made the biggest impact. Herself awinner of the GII Maskette H. and GII Test S., Blitey producedGrade I winners to three different stallions--Nijinsky, Easy Goerand Mr Prospector. Her Nijinsky colt Dancing Spree was fastenough to win the GI Carter H. and GI Breeders' Cup Sprint, inaddition to the GI Suburban H. over a mile and a quarter, whilehis sister Dancing All Night took the GII Long Island H. over amile and a half. Instilled Regard's third dam, Oh What A Dance, was an unraced sister to Dancing Spree and Dancing All Night. Oh What a Dance also enjoyed Grade I success as a broodmarewith Heavenly Prize's sister Oh What A Windfall, who took theMatron S. Another sister to Heavenly Prize, the Grade I-placedDancinginmydreams, produced Dancing Forever, a Rahy coltwho landed the Grade I Woodford Reserve Manhattan H. Heavenly Prize also did sterling work, notably with two sonssired by Storm Cat. One of them, Good Reward, won the Grade IHollywood Derby and GI Manhattan H., while the other, PurePrize, landed the GII Kentucky Cup Classic H. Without a Grade Iwin to his name, Pure Prize started out at a fee of $7,500 butsucceeded in siring Grade I winners in both North and SouthAmerica. Instilled Regard's dam Enhancing is a daughter of Forestry, whichmakes her a three-parts-sister to Pure Prize and Good Reward.Another daughter of Forestry has already produced a KentuckyDerby winner--Nyquist--so there is reason for hoping that InstilledRegard, with plenty of stamina in his pedigree, has more to offer onthe road to Churchill Downs. FEAR THE COWBOY NEXT IN LINE FOR

PEGASUS SPOT by Bill Finley

Unofficially, there is one starting spot left for the lineup for the

GI Pegasus World Cup, and it appears that it will be given to Fear

the Cowboy (Cowboy Cal), the recent winner of the GIII Harlan's

Holiday S. at Gulfstream.

Trainer Efren Loza, Jr. told the TDN that owners Kathleen

Amaya and Raffaele Centofanti have committed to running in

the race but are awaiting notification from The Stronach Group

that they will be allowed to take the remaining spot. Considering

that Fear the Cowboy is a recent stakes winner at Gulfstream

and may just be the top older male horse in training who is not

yet officially in the Pegasus, it seems unlikely track management

would grant the spot to another horse.

AIt looks like it's 99% true that he will be running in that race,

we just haven't signed a contract with The Stronach Group yet.@

Loza said. AThey are in negotiation with some other people and

we haven't signed a contract yet, so I don't want to make any

official statements.@

Loza said he expected an official notification on Fear the

Cowboy's status either Tuesday or Wednesday.

After nine of 12 starting spots, costing $1 million each, were

purchased at the Dec. 15 deadline for the $16-million race, The

Stronach Group, the owners of Gulfstream, secured the

remaining three spot and went shopping for horses to fill out

the field. According to a recent report in the Daily Racing Form,

two of three starting berths have been handed out to War Story

(Northern Afleet) and Giant Expectations (Frost Giant).

AI believe we will be the top choice among the horses they are

considering for the last spot,@ Loza said.

Madame Stripes kicks away late in the Megahertz | Benoit Photo

Fear the Cowboy Next in Line for Pegasus Spot cont.

Fear the Cowboy has proven himself to be an overachiever

during his career. Purchased for just $1,500, at the Fasig-Tipton

Kentucky February Mixed Sale 2013, he has won 9 of 27 career

starts while earning $570,869. Also the winner of the 2017

GIII Skip Away S. at Gulfstream, he seems to just now be hitting

peak form.

"We know it will be a really tough race and a challenge for us,

but we know our horse is in really good form and he really loves

Gulfstream" Loza said. "But, obviously, he'll be running against a

different kind of horse [in the Pegasus] and it will be a big

challenge. Our horse comes from the back and there is a lot of

speed, so that will help. This is a race everyone wants to run in

and our horse is in really good form. I know he's a 6-year-old

horse, but his last race was his best race ever."

Javier Castellano rode Fear the Cowboy in the Harlan's Holiday,

but is already committed to West Coast (Flatter). Loza said he

has some riders in mind but is not certain yet who will get the

mount.

The owners of those horses that are taking over The Stronach

Group spots are not required to pay the $1-million entry fee.

However, they will be running for only 50% of the purse money

and any money they earn above $1 million will be distributed to

the nine owners who were in by Dec. 15.

Madame Stripes, placed in five graded or group stakes in her

career, finally got her day in the sun and broke through to

capture the GIII Megahertz S. Monday at Santa Anita.

A second-out graduate in her native Argentina in 2015, the bay

was runner-up in the G2 General Luis Maria Campos and

G1 Polla de Potrancas at Hipodromo that term before running

fourth in the G1 Argentine Oaks and coming Stateside. Laid up

for over a year, she tallied just once in her first six North

American starts before getting up to take the restricted Osunitas

S. July 21 at Del Mar. Third in the GII John C. Mabee S. there

Sept. 2, she missed by a nose in the restricted Swingtime S. over

course and distance Oct. 7 and, after a dull 11th place effort in

the GII Goldikova S. on the Breeders= Cup undercard Nov. 4, ran

third on dirt in the GII Bayakoa S. last out Dec. 3 at Los Alamitos.

Back on the green as a distant second choice to her Swingtime

conqueror Insta Erma here, Madame Stripes broke a beat slowly

and was squeezed back to last before progressing into fifth

going into the clubhouse turn. She held that position down the

backstretch, about five lengths behind splits of :23.11 and

:46.98. Insta Erma made a quick bid for the lead at the top of

the far turn and went on with pacesetter Thundering Sky as

Madame Stripes advanced up onto the leaders= heels passing

three-quarters in 1:10.78. Switching into the three path for the

drive, the Gainesway colorbearer swept past the favorite a

sixteenth from home and edged clear late to prevail. Insta Erma

completed the exacta and Thundering Sky held onto third from

DREAMING OF ANNA DIES AT 14

Frank Calabrese=s Dreaming of Anna (Rahy--Justenuffheart, by

Broad Brush), the champion juvenile filly of 2006, died last week

at the age of 14, according to reports first published in the Daily

Racing Form. As a Wayne Catalano trainee, she captured the

GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies in 2006--her greatest

achievement in a career that saw her win 10 times from 17

starts with earnings of $2,024,550.

Dreaming of Anna won graded stakes at the ages of two, three

and four and, despite notching her defining victory on dirt,

competed on the turf for the majority of her career. She retired

at the conclusion of the 2008 season and began a successful

broodmare career. She most notably produced GI King=s Bishop

S. runner-up and sire Fast Anna (Medaglia d=Oro) and GSW

Dreamologist (Tapit), but also achieved success as the grand-

dam of SW & GISP With Honors (War Front). Her final foal was a

2017 colt by Declaration of War.

Also Ran: Battle Station, Smooth Move, Seven Lilies, Jaye Jaye.

Empire Line scored on debut with a very professional

performance against fellow state-breds locally Dec. 1. He

entered Monday with a bullet five-furlong work in 1:01 flat

(1/12) over the Belmont training track Jan. 9.

The favorite settled third while traveling in the four path

tracking pacesetter Morning Breez through a :23.25 opening

quarter. The dark bay continued to gain while three wide on the

far turn and got on even terms with the leader into the stretch.

Empire Line took command at the eighth pole, but had to hold

off a resilient Evaluator in the final strides to get his nose down

first in the shadow of the wire to stay unbeaten.

"I wanted to be on the outside on the trip because he feels a

little more comfortable,@ said winning rider Eric Cancel. AHe

gives me a little more, so everything worked out. When the

other horse [Evaluator] came right next to me, I thought I was

going to get beat. But he felt it and just kept on trying and never

gave up and the other horse didn't get us there in time. He ran a

huge race."

First noted by David Grening of the Daily Racing Form, West

Point Thoroughbreds bought the winner at the Fasig-Tipton

Midlantic sale and was contacted by former Louisville basketball

coach Rick Pitino, who also bid on the horse, to buy a piece of

Empire Line. Homecoming Dance is a half to the 2017

victories before a seventh-place effort in the GI Test S. at

Saratoga Aug. 5. She posted consecutive runner-up finishes

against optional-claiming foes on the turf at Belmont Oct. 9 and

the local main track Nov. 9. The chestnut got back to the

winners circle last time out here Dec. 10.

The favorite broke sharply, but let Lucy N= Ethel (During) sprint
