IntroductionThank you for purchasing this Scarlett 2i2, one of the family of Focusrite professional computeraudiointerfacesincorporatinghighqualityFocusriteanaloguepreamplifiers.Younowhaveasimpleandcompactsolutionforroutinghighqualityaudiotoandfromyourcomputer.

This User Guide provides a detailed explanation of the hardware to help you achieve a thoroughunderstandingoftheproduct’soperationalfeatures.Werecommendthatbothuserswhoarenewtocomputerrecording,aswellasmoreexperiencedusers,takethetimetoreadthroughtheUserGuidesothatyouarefullyawareofallthepossibilitiesthattheScarlett2i2andaccompanyingsoftwarehastooffer.IfthemainUserGuidesectionsdonotprovidetheinformationyouneed,besuretoconsultwww.focusrite.com/answerbase,whichcontainsacomprehensivecollectionofcommontechnicalsupportqueries.

FeaturesThe Scarlett 2i2 hardware interface provides the means for connecting microphones, musicalinstrumentsorlinelevelaudiosignalstoacomputerrunningMacOSorWindows.Thesignalsatthephysicalinputscanberoutedtoyouraudiorecordingsoftware/digitalaudioworkstation(referredtothroughoutthisUserGuideasthe“DAW”);similarly,theDAW’smonitororrecordedoutputwillappearattheunit’sphysicaloutputs.

Audiosources–mics,instruments,etc.-connectedtothephysicalinputscanberecordedintheDAWandthenroutedfromyourDAWtothephysicaloutputs.Thephysicaloutputscanbeconnectedtoanamplifierandspeakers,poweredmonitors,headphones,analoguemixeroranyotheranalogueaudioequipmentthatyouwishtouse.AlthoughallinputsandoutputsontheScarlett2i2arerouteddirectlytoandfromyourDAWforrecordingandplayback,youcanconfiguretheroutingwithinyourDAWinordertomeetyourneeds.

GETTING STARTED

Software InstallationWe aim to ensure that the latest installation software will be on the disk included with yourScarlett2i2.Howeverwestronglyrecommendthatyoucheckforanylaterversiononourwebsiteatwww.focusrite.com/downloadsbeforeperformingthesoftwareinstallation.

Mac OS1. Insertyourinstallerdiskintoyourcomputer’sDVD-ROMdrive

2. Awindowshouldappeardisplayingthecontentsofthedisk.Ifthiswindowdoesnotappearautomatically,youcanmanuallynavigatetothediskusingMacOSFinder

3. Locatethefile‘Focusrite USB 2 Driver.pkg’;double-clickitsicontobegintheinstallation

4. Followtheon-screeninstructionstoperformtheinstallation

5. Whentheinstallationiscomplete,restartyourcomputer

Connecting your Scarlett 2i2

IMPORTANT:BeforeyouconnecttheScarlett2i2toyourcomputer,pleasecompletethesoftwareinstallationaccordingtothe

instructionsabove.Thiswillensurethatthehardwareusesthecorrectdrivers,andwillpreventunexpectedbehaviour.

The Scarlett 2i2 has a single USB 2.0 port (on the rear panel). Once the software installation iscomplete,simplyconnecttheScarlett2i2toyourcomputerusingtheUSBcableprovided.(NotethatScarlett2i2isaUSB2.0deviceandthustheUSBconnectionrequiresaUSB2.0+compliantportonyourcomputer.ItwillnotoperatecorrectlywithUSB1.0/1.1ports.)

Audio Setup in your DAWTheScarlett2i2iscompatiblewithanyWindows-basedDAWthatsupportsASIOorWDMandanyMac-based DAW that uses Core Audio. After installing the drivers and connecting the hardware,youcanstartusingtheScarlett2i2withtheDAWofyourchoice.AbletonLiveLiteisincludedontheScarlett2i2ResourcesDVDtoallowyoutogetstartedifyoudonotalreadyhaveaDAWapplicationinstalledonyourcomputer.ToinstallAbletonLiteLive,locatethefileAbleton Live LiteontheDVD,double-clickitandfollowtheon-screeninstructions.OperatinginstructionsforAbletonLiveLitearebeyondthescopeofthisUserGuide,buttheapplicationincludesafullsetofHelpfiles.

Example of UsageTheScarlett2i2isanexcellentchoiceforseveraldifferentrecordingandmonitoringapplications.Sometypicalconfigurationsareshownbelow.

Connecting a microphone or instrument

ThissetupillustratesthemosttypicalconfigurationforrecordingwithDAWsoftwareonyourMacorPC.Inthiscase,youmightrecordguitarthroughInput1andvocalsthroughInput2intoAbletonLiveLite,whilemonitoringtheplaybackfromtheDAWviaheadphonesorloudspeakers.

ThefrontpanelinputsocketsareNeutrikCombo®,whichaccepteitheranXLRmaleconnector(youwillprobablyhaveoneontheendofyourmicrophonecable)ora¼”(6.35mm)jackplug.NotetheScarlett2i2hasno“Mic/line”switch–theFocusritepreamplifierstageisautomaticallyconfiguredforamicrophonewhenyoupluganXLRintotheinput,andforalineorinstrumentwhenyouconnecta jackplug.Set theLINE/INSTswitchnext to thesocket to INST ifyouareconnectingamusicalinstrument (aguitar in theexample)viaanordinary2-pole (TS)guitar jack,or toLINE ifyouareconnectingalinelevelsourcesuchasthebalancedoutputofastagepianoviaa3-pole(TRS)jack.NotetheComboconnectoracceptsbothTRSandTStypesofjackplug.

Using Direct MonitoringYouwillfrequentlyheartheterm“latency”usedinconnectionwithdigitalaudiosystems.InthecaseofthesimpleDAWrecordingapplicationdescribedabove,latencywillbethetimeittakesforyourinputsignalstopassthroughyourcomputerandaudiosoftware.Latencycanbeaproblemforaperformerwhowishestorecordwhilemonitoringtheirinputsignals.

TheScarlett2i2isfittedwitha“DirectMonitoring”option,whichovercomesthisproblem.Setting the frontpanel“DirectMonitor”switch toONwill routeyour inputsignalsdirectly to theScarlett 2i2’s headphone and main monitor outputs. This enables you to hear yourself with zerolatency–i.e.,in“realtime”–alongwiththecomputerplayback.Theinputsignalstoyourcomputerarenotaffectedinanywaybythissetting.

When“DirectMonitoring”issettoON,ensurethatyourDAWsoftwareisnotsettorouteitsinput(whatyouarecurrentlyrecording)toitsoutput.Ifitis,youwillhearyourself“twice”,withonesignalaudiblydelayedasanecho.

Connecting Scarlett 2i2 to loudspeakersThe1/4”jackoutputsontherearpanelcanbeusedtoconnectmonitoringspeakers.Self-poweredmonitors (i.e., typicalcomputerspeakers) incorporate internalamplifiers,andmaybeconnecteddirectly.Larger,passiveloudspeakerswillrequireaseparatestereoamplifier;inthiscase,therearpaneloutputsshouldbeconnectedtotheamplifier’sinputs.

The line output connectors are 3-pole (TRS) ¼” (6.35 mm) jack sockets, and are electronicallybalanced. Typical consumer (hi-fi) amplifiers and small powered monitors will have unbalancedinputs,eitheronphono(RCA)socketsorviaa3.5mm3-polejackplugintendedfordirectconnectiontoacomputer.Ineithercase,useasuitableconnectingcablewithjackplugsatoneend.

Professionalpoweramplifierswillgenerallyhavebalancedinputs.

NOTE:Youruntheriskofcreatinganaudiofeedbackloopifloudspeakersareactiveatthesametimeasamicrophone!Werecommendthatyoualwaysturnoff(orturndown)monitoringloudspeakerswhilerecordinganduseheadphoneswhenoverdubbing.
