SCANDINAVIAN ARCHITECTURE AND URBANISM
The aim of this course is to develop the students’ knowledge and understanding of architecture and urbanism of the Scandinavian countries. The course will combine lectures, drawing exercises, building research and urban fieldwork. You will go on study tours together in Scandinavia and study examples of historical, modern, and contem-porary Scandinavian architecture, landscape architecture, interior architecture and urban design.
We will study the architecture of Sweden, Den-mark, Norway trying to understanding the social, cultural and historical context from which it arose and the unique qualities of Scandinavian lands-capes, climate and light that have had a strong influence on the architecture and design of public places. We will look in to some of the most important thoughts and theories that have influ-enced architecture in the Scandinavian countries.
A further aim of the course is to expand the students’ frames of reference and stimulate critical reflection around Scandinavian architec-ture and urbanism. The course also sets out to support students’ learning and improve their ability to analyze urban space and structures. This is primarily accomplished through qualified analyses of urban space and structures with the aid of recognized tools for theoretical analysis. Tuition is mainly in the form of lectures, seminars and workshops. The work is carried out and presented in the form of assignments.
