The Little PianistsTORY

12 November 2016

There was once a little boy named Azul. He loved to play the piano and dreamed of becoming a pianist some day.

One day, Vicki, his piano teacher told him, “Azul, you will perform tomorrow in front of a large audience. You are getting to be quite the pianist!

Vicki smiled. She whispered into Azul’s ear a piano teacher’s secret. “Play with your heart, not with your fingers.”

Every Sunday, Azul went to his piano class, and practiced every night at home, just before going to bed.

Azul became good at it because he was so sincere. He would forget to brush his teeth but would never forget to practice playing the piano!

Your fingers move like a squirrel on the piano keys. But there is something missing.”

“What is it?” Azul just had to know. He really… really wanted to be, not just a good pianist, but a great pianist.

As always, Vicki pulled out her box of stickers. Azul held out his hand and Vicki stuck on it, a bright sticker of a butterfly.

“There, think of this butterfly when you want to play with your heart,” she said.

That day, when all the children played in the park, Azul just stared at his butterfly.

The night before his performance, he did not practice because he did not know how to play with his heart!

The piano was in the middle of a round stage, surrounded by rows of people.Azul walked onto the stage, sat on the piano bench and closed his eyes for a second.

He wondered, “I can play with my fingers because I can move them.I can touch the piano keys. How can I play with my heart? I can’t even see my heart.”

For the first time, in a long time, Azul went to bed without playing the piano.

When Azul woke up, he looked for the butterfly sticker. Oh no! The sticker was gone too! Now Azul was nervous. Really nervous…

He tried playing the piano, but his fingers would just not move! However, that did not stop the clock from ticking. Soon it was performance time.

Remembering Vicki’s words, he thought of the butterfly. In the quiet of the auditorium, Azul heard the flutter of wings.

A butterfly sat on his shoulder and started to hum a tune. His fingers began to move by themselves. His heart began to play the butterfly’s song.

The Milkmaid and her Pail

sTORY

A milkmaid was going

to the market carrying milk on

her head in a pail.

As she was dreaming and

walking, she stepped on a stone. She fell down and her pail of

milk also spilled.

On her way, she

started dreaming. “I will get money after

selling the milk. With that money, I will buy some hens. They will lay eggs. I will sell them in the market. With the money I will buy a new

frock. I will look so pretty. Everyone will

look at me.”

Do not dream while you are

doing any work.

The greedy Mouse

A greedy mouse saw a basket full of corn. He made a small hole in the basket. He ate a lot of corn. He could not come out as his stomach was full.

The mouse started crying. A rabbit was passing by. It heard the mouse’s cry and asked, “Why are you crying?”

The mouse explained, “I made a small hole and came into the basket to eat the corn. Now I am not able to get out through that hole.”

The rabbit said, “It is because you ate too much.” The rabbit laughed and went away.

The mouse fell asleep in the basket. The next morning he wanted to eat some more corn. He forgot all about getting out of the basket. So he ate the corn and his stomach was really big again.

After eating, he thought, “Oh! Now I will go out tomorrow.”

A cat passed from there. He smelt the mouse in the basket. He lifted its lid and ate the mouse.

Never be greedy.

There was a proud teak tree in the forest. He was tall and strong. There was a small herb next to the tree.

The teak tree said, “I am very strong. No one can defeat me.” Hearing this, the herb replied, “Dear friend, too much pride is harmful. Even the strong will fall one day.”

One day a strong wind blew. The teak stood firmly but the herb bowed low. The teak made fun of the herb.

One day, there was a storm in the forest. The storm kept growing stronger. The teak tried his best to stand upright, but in the end, he fell down. That was the end of the proud tree.

When everything was calm again, the herb stood straight. He looked around. He saw that the proud teak had fallen.

Who is screaming and shouting?

Disciplining your child can be child’s play

tHE PAREnt OR CHILD?

Most of the time parents look at the misbehaviour and either scold, punish, threaten the child for the misbehaviour and do not look into the reason that lead to the misbehaviour. This means adults do not try to understand children. They try to have patience with children, and then they always run the risk off running out of patience. We understand children, when they are babies. We don’t blame them for crying, we try and understand why they are crying and try to resolve the reason. But as the child grows older, he acquires language, movement and the ability to act out his

needs and hence now he does not only rely on crying, he resorts to angry behaviour or tantrums and now instead of looking into the reason, we either blame him for having the reason or we blame him for the ‘act’ he chose to get our attention. “Happy children will never hit, bite, scream, shout or misbehave.” Whenever a child misbehaves or throws a tantrum understand that he is upset and something or someone is making him unhappy. Try to find the reason, maybe, any one of the ‘four devils’ is troubling him. Hungry• It is not only related

to pure and simple hunger, sometimes the body requires special food and so the child can be cranky, irritable or the child is getting too much of a particular food and hence behaves or rather misbehaves to draw attention to his need.

• Children are also

known to be fidgety and inattentive when they are thirsty.

Tired• They can be tired

physically or tired of concentrating or tired after coming from school and need to just sit for 5 minutes but we harass them to change, eat, and go down to play.

• Tired can also be of ‘being always told what to do’, no choice, no freedom etc.

upset• Upset can be

because, ‘I did not get what I want’,

• an upset stomach, • feeling of fright,

fear, and separation anxiety.

• ‘I fell down and you scolded me, instead of hugging me and reassuring me that it is o.k. to fall, be careful the next time’.

• You promised me something and did not give it to me.

• You gave me two choices and then made me do what you want.

Ms. Swati Popat Vats

menTOR speaks

• Upset can be a lot of reasons and upset generally makes me throw a tantrum, or wail and cry or beat the adult because I am so frustrated that you cannot see and recognise my need.

IgnoredChildren feel ignored when they see:• A new baby • A new guest in the

house • A new appliance in

the house • Ignored can be

that I drew a lovely picture and you did not ask me about it.

• I wanted to chatter and talk and you kept talking to others.

• I wanted some company while I did my homework and you were busy on the phone.

• And when I am feeling ignored I will do all I can to get you to pay attention to me.

• When nothing else works I do negative things that get you to scold me or shout at me, because that too is attention.
