scammers are calling homes and businesses, wec. … you have a question about ... is this the first...
TRANSCRIPT
Scammers are calling homes and businesses, pretending to be Wiregrass Electric employees — their
phone number can even appear on your caller ID as WEC. They then threaten to disconnect your power
unless you pay them with a prepaid credit or debit card.
Like us on Facebook and share our posts about the scam.
Warn your friends and family — the scam is happening all over Alabama.
Call us at 800-239-4602 any time you have a question about your bill.
WEC will never call and demand money over the phone. If someone does, they are a scammer! If this happens to you, hang up and call WEC at 800-239-4602. Help us
spread the word before anyone becomes a victim.
Don’t be a victim!

Project's Objective *
Like many electric utilities in 2015, WEC found its customers being targeted by malicious phone calls attempting tosteal money. These criminals would say they were representing WEC, then ask for large sums of money in order tonot have someone’s power turned off.
We decided to be as proactive as possible to get the word out about the scams. We felt that a simple mail piece thatlooked and was folded differently from our regular bill insert would help get the word out. This insert helped toclarify exactly how WEC goes about letting someone know that their power is going to be cut off and how we acceptpayment. This contrast helped our members understand when they were being the target of a scam.
