School Sports Day 2009
I hope that you enjoy this latest newsletter which showcases the achievements of our children and young people. We are only able to include a small sample of the work that pupils do in their classes and beyond, but it will give you an idea of the range of learning taking place as we introduce the new Curriculum for Excellence.
Kindest regards Joyce Gear

Norway Trip
In June 2009, 11 pupils from the secondary department, Miss Inkster and I, went to Selje, a small community 5 hours North of Bergen, to meet staff and pupils from Selje School and to undertake an Enterprise project with their help. We visited several local businesses and enjoyed the magnificent scenery over 3 days. The pupils took no time to make friends and learned a lot from each other. Several are still in touch and we are hoping for a return visit in Shetland in summer 2010.

ECO NEWS
The Scalloway P7 class has completed a special environmental award programme this tem by gaining a Discovery Award under the John Muir Award scheme. John Muir pioneered what we know today as ecology. He was born in Scotland in 1838 and emigrated to America with his family at the age of 11. As an adult he went on to found the first National Park. To gain the Discovery Award the pupils have explored their local environment led by their class teacher and staff from the Outdoor Education team and carried out conservation work locally.
We have now been awarded our second ECO Flag status!
Maths Wizards
The winners of the Design and Make Maths Wall Challenge were Alanoss Jamieson, Emily Briggs, Rona Learnmonth and Vaila Irvine. The competition asked pupils to create and invent games to help younger pupils how to learn to tell the time and remember the days of the week. The wining entries all devised very ingenious ways of making this learning fun. As part of the prize for winning the competition the pupils visited the infant classes and taught them maths using their original games.
Primary Trips
Mrs Stewart’s class were ‘oot an aboot’ in the Summer term in support of their project on Shetland Wildlife. With P6 and Mr Rose they walked over to Burwick and had a splendid day on the beach. They had a ‘scavenging challenge’ and many interesting items were found. Locals, David and Joyce Leask, joined the fun and told us the history of the area: Long ago there was a broch on one of the little offshore islands, stones from it were used in Scalloway buildings. We also saw ‘the Knowe’, where the sails of fishing boats were washed in the sea. The morning sped by and all too soon we had to leave all the beach sculptures and makeshift rafts and return to school. P3/4 went to Mousa with Mrs Davis and Mr Rose. The wet and windy start to the day had turned lovely by the time we reached the pier to set off. On the way over to the island we saw neesiks, tysties, and solans, and lots of scootie aalins and tirricks on the island itself. We walked to the East and West Pools and saw the seals with their pups and a tirrick’s nest with a clutch of eggs. We had our lunch at the foot of the Broch and then climbed to admire the view from the top. Tired and happy we were ferried back to the pier by Tom, but not before he had zig zagged the boat so that everyone was thoroughly drenched with spray A great time was had by all!

Visit to Japan
Our country in a global society Scalloway Junior High and
Tingwall Primary trip to Japan April 2009
In April two teachers Cameron Mackenzie (Scalloway Junior High) and Anne Fraser (Tingwall Primary) accompanied David Nugent, Caitlin Farquar and Shannon Irvine on a visit to Hanamaki Prefecture in Japan as part of the ‘Our Country in a Global Society’ project.
Among other things, the group visited a junior high and a primary school and were able to establish links for future collaboration. On the visits to both schools David, Caitlin and Shannon were given an opportunity to follow a typical Japanese timetable: participating in music, calligraphy and physical education lessons, and joining in with the daily cleaning duties performed by young people in schools all over Japan.
Japanese school
However, it wasn’t all hard work, there was also plenty of time to enjoy getting to know our host families, as well as time for sightseeing, shopping and experiencing delights of Japanese cuisine.

Rocket Launching in Unst
Following work in science classes around Shetland, a rocket launching day was organised on Unst. Science teachers, in recent years, have been experimenting with a new piece of equipment that uses compressed air to propel paper rockets over distances of around 100m. The launchers are made from plumbing pipes and tyre valves and are filled with compressed air from foot pumps.
The pupils themselves design rockets from an A4 sheet of paper, an A4 sheet of card, Sellotape and 5g of Bluetack. Mr Sutherland, led the Scalloway Junior High team. They joined teams from Aith JHS, Whalsay JHS and Anderson High Schools and headed across Yell to meet the Mid Yell JHS team on the next ferry. To make the most of the day out a couple of educational visits were incorporated into the itinerary. The first was to the Unst Pure Project. Where they saw how a hydrogen fuel cell worked before being shown the Pure car and the system for charging it up with electricity and with hydrogen. Then each group had half an hour or so before the start of the design and build session. The teams had to make four rockets per team. The rocket which travelled furthest from each team would be counted which meant that one school could not take away all the trophies The launching, from two launchers and at only 40psi took less time than had been anticipated so it was over in a flash. All the Anderson High rockets landed approximately 30m ahead of the field with the next nearest Scalloway. Back at Baltasound, trophies were presented by Iain McConnell, the Baltasound technical teacher who hosted the first Air Rocket Challenge. A rewarding last event for the day was a very popular visit to the Valhalla Brewery..

Back on the Mainland and taking the Sullom Voe route south, the house where the (WW2) German officers brought ashore by the Shetland Bus were interrogated and the beach where the American pilot landed when he got caught in fog and could not find his aircraft carrier were sighted. Final port of call was Brae’s new chippy, then after a long day all were home by 5pm.
The verdict on the day from one Scalloway pupil anyway – ‘Awesome!’”
Art Dept Open Day For Achievement Day, pupils from all year groups helped to put on a colourful and varied display of their art and design work from the past year. There was a very good turn out of parents, former pupils and interested members of the public and there were many positive comments about the quality of the work.

SECONDARY NETBALL Scalloway school enjoyed another successful netball session in 200809. The under 13 team competed with the top teams and finished strongly midtable. Another year on and another year older, it’s hoped that they will challenge for top spot this season! The under 15 team caused a few upsets throughout the season and showed great determination. We were short of players in this age group and hope that a few more 3rd and 4th year girls will join us this year to strengthen the squad.
The Shetland Junior Netball Development Group will be running the leagues again this year and there will be opportunities for some players to travel to compete in Orkney and on the Mainland. Scalloway lasses have featured regularly on these trips in the past. Our former pupils have again entered into the Shetland Ladies Senior Netball league. Scalloway now has two senior teams competing well done! Training began in September and is on fortnightly in the Games Hall 3.45 4.45pm. There is no charge. All girls from S1S4 are welcome whether they have been before or not.

New S2 Electives
These are a set of interesting skills and activities for S2 pupils to enjoy for an hour twice a week. The pupils helped to draw up a list to choose from and they have now just about completed the first selection of Electives. These included: Chinese Cookery, Forensic Science, Animal Care, Web Design and Digital Photography.
ELECTIVE TREATS
Among the pleasures of the new Electives for S2 has been Chinese Cookery under the direction of Scalloway’s culinary queen, Mrs Dobson. The course climaxed with her taking them to the new Golden Coach Restaurant at Baroc. They had a great meal and sampled a number of dishes using chopsticks throughout!

Hamish Visits the Nursery!
Scalloway Nursery had a very special BLUE visitor recently Hamish the Bookstart Bear! Hamish has been in Shetland for a month promoting the Library and the Bookstart programme in Scotland. The Bookstart programme encourages all parents and carers to enjoy books with children from as early an age as possible, and encourages every child in the UK to develop a lifelong love of books.
Working through locallybased organisations, Bookstart gives the gift of free book packs to all Scottish children at around eight weeks, 18 months and the Bookstart Treasure Chest to three years old, along with guidance materials for parents and carers. Bookstart also aims to foster a love of books through a range of fun activities.
Parents who have not received any of these packs and would like one for their child should contact Catherine Mullay in the School Library.

Prize-Winning Writer Last term, the Shetland Library in
partnership with the Museum and Archives presented The Young Shetland Writer Award 2009. Rona Learmonth, then in P4 was placed first. It is not possible to print her story in this newsletter. Here is how it starts:
“Today I was going out fishing with Father but on the way I saw a little dog. It looked quite friendly so I set my things down and gave the dog a pat. To my intense surprise, it grabbed my things and ran off with them. I followed it. I followed it because my simple fishing things got me most of my food. Father did not follow me and the dog. He stayed patiently waiting for my return by a large stone. The dog stopped by a piece of driftwood and waited until I had caught up. When I caught up, it ran on again. Then… it vanished! I decided to look for the dog, so I followed the dog’s neat little footprints. The footprints led up to a stone archway. This puzzled me for I was almost sure the archway had not been there before, but I must have been mistaken because there was thick ivy growing up the walls. I stopped for a moment to look at this wondrous thing. Then I went on through it. As soon as I did so, I found myself in a different world…”
As you can probably tell, it develops into a fantasy involving the Papil stone. Not only did Rona gain first place, but Emily Briggs of P4 was highly commended for her very original writing about the stone.
Miss Mullay receives Queen‛s Guide Award
Our School Library Assistant, Miss Catherine Mullay was recently presented with the Queen’s Guide Award for her involvement with Girlguiding. Miss Mullay, mentored by former Probationer Teacher at Scalloway JHS, Dr Alison Drysdale, has been working towards the Award for two and a half years. The award focuses on the development of skills such as teamwork, time management, organisation, planning, evaluation & communication and is completed through individual challenges, working with peers, within Guiding and the wider community.
