January 2017 School Closing Procedures With the winter weather taking a hold of us in Scales Mound Community Unit School District 211, one of the tough decisions a superintendent has to make is to have school or to cancel school. Sometimes this decision is made easy due to the severity of the storm. However, when it comes to cold temperatures the decision can be a tougher call. The decision to close school is not done in isolation. When the conditions are such that we may have to call off school the superintendents from Galena, Warren, River Ridge, Benton, and Scales Mound begin a phone tree around 4-4:30 AM. We consult with the road commissioners and the National Weather Service to determine the severity of the storm and time it will impact the districts. Collectively, the superintendents then make the call to cancel, delay, or have school. With cold weather, we have collectively determined that the cut off to cancelling school is usually when the wind chill hits -30 degrees. However, if other conditions are factored in that may have an impact on the safety of our students and staff, a decision to call off school may be made at a warmer wind- chill temperature. Calling off school has an impact on our school community in many ways. Parents and guardians need to make arrangement s to find day care for our younger students, scheduled activities have to be cancelled or rescheduled, and by state regulations, we are required to make up the day, which could force families and staff to alter end of the school year plans. Superintendents have to take all of the data regarding the weather conditions, daily schedule, community impact, and state requirements into consideration as they make this decision. However, the number one concern we all have is the safety of our students and staff. We will always make the decision that we feel protects our students and staff when determining if we should have school, delay school, or release students early. Illinois State Scholars Congratulations to seniors Zach Stadel and Jacob Winslow for being selected as Illinois State Scholars. Zach and Jacob are role models for our students at Scales Mound Community Unit School District 211. Their success in the classroom and involvement outside of the classroom propelled them to being selected. We are very proud of their success and achievement. Go Hornets! School Closing Procedures With the winter weather taking a hold of us in Scales Mound Community Unit School District 211, one of the tough decisions a superintendent has to make is to have school or to cancel school. However, if other conditions are factored in that may have an impact on the safety of our students and staff, a decision to call off school may be made at a warmer wind-chill temperature.

Calling off school has an impact on our school community in many ways. Parents and guardians need to make arrangements to find day care for our younger students, scheduled activities have to be cancelled or rescheduled, and by state regulations, we are required to make up the day, which could force families and staff to alter end of the school year plans.

Cards  for  a  Cause…  The  Holiday  Card  Shop  opened  again  this  year  in  front  of  Mrs.  SD’s  classroom  before  school  during  the  week  of  December  5th  –  9th.    Students  designed  and  created  handmade  cards  to  raise  money  to  donate  to  those  “near”  and  “far”.    This  year,  the  cards  sold  out  on  Thursday;  and  students  had  to  work  a  little  “overtime”  to  keep  up  with  the  demand!    The  students  worked  very  hard  to  decide  on  designs  and  create  the  cards  for  sale.    They  took  turns  selling  the  cards  and  worked  together  very  well  to  determine  the  allocation  of  the  proceeds.    The  proceeds  were  donated  to  local

needs  and  to  purchase  a  flock  of  ducks,  a  flock  of  geese,  and  a  flock  of  chicks  from  Heifer  International  (heifer.org).    The  students  researched  and  discussed  what  animals  would  be  best  to  purchase  and  learned  a  bit  about  how  the  animals  benefit  the  recipients.    Thank  you  to  everyone  who  purchased  cards!

Mrs.  Stayner  Dittmar

Band  Karate

This  year,  in  JH  band,  the  students  have  been  working  on  “Band  Karate.”    They  work  on  exercises  in  their  lesson  books,  and  advance  on  to  increasingly  more  difficult  songs,  mastering  important  musical  skills  as  they  go.    It  was  a  race  to  the  finish  line  for  the  whole  JH  band  class.    It  has  been  a  good,  healthy,  musical  competition,  and  it  has  been  fun,  too!    Congratulations  to  Collin  Malin  for  finishing  in  4th  place!    Collin  received  a  coupon  to  spend  at  our  school  concession  stand,  and  a  certificate  for  free  ice  cream  at  Culver’s.

Second Grade Fun! The second graders

were busy in December preparing for the holiday. A big thank you to Mrs. Werner, Mrs. Raab, and Mrs. Rivers for helping us design and create our gingerbread houses. Also, thanks to Mr. Keith Jakel for donating the frosting. The kids had a great time!

After reading the story Big, Bushy Mustache, the children retold the story wearing their own mustaches!

Gingerbread houses and ornaments for the tree!

What Parents Should Know:Electronic CigarettesElectronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes or e-cigs are battery operated devices that are designed to look and feel like an everyday cigarette. The majority of these devices use refillable cartridges that are filled with a liquid that contains flavorings and very harmful chemicals.

STREET NAMES:  E-cig, vapes. Process of using e-cigs is called "vaping".

WHAT'S IT LOOK LIKE?Metal devise that are designed to resemble regular cigarettes, the device heats the liquid nicotine, which changes into a flavored vapor.

"VAPING" MARIJUANA?Smokers use cannabis in wax or liquid form and it is impossible to tell what substance the user is "vaping" in public because it's odorless. This trend is growing rapidly among teens.

Spinal Institute of Health Visits 2nd Grade

Dr. Clark Benson visited Mrs. Montgomery’s 2nd grade class during Guidance to talk about the importance of spinal health. He read a book and brought in a model of a spinal cord. Dr. Benson talked to them about the way they sit and also checked their desks to make sure that they were adjusted correctly for each student.

Dr. Benson is the chiropractor at the Spinal Institute of Health in Platteville, WI and has been serving this area since 2009. His mission is to serve the surrounding communities by delivering a very specific service to facilitate the body’s inborn healing abilities as well as spreading the seeds of health by educating their patients and the community on the truth of what health is, where it comes from, and how to maintain it for the rest of their lives, so that they can experience life at it’s fullest.

NHS HOSTS MENTORING HOLIDAY PARTY

• • •Scales Mound National Honor Society hosted a mentoring holiday party on December 14th. High school students and their elementary mentees traveled to Pioneer Lanes in Platteville, Wisconsin for bowling and pizza. When they returned they opened gifts and watched a holiday movie.

Each Friday for 30 minutes the NHS students mentor their elementary child. They might play games, do a craft, homework or simply hang out. It is a time for the elementary student to have an older student to develop a friendship with.

Scales Mound School Musicians and Artists of the Month Cameron Ziarko (HS Music) Cameron has been chosen as the musician of the month because this year, he has tried many new musical things! He has recently discovered that he enjoys being a part of the school choir! He sang in our school Christmas concert, he had a vital role in our school musical, “Grease,” and he even went Christmas caroling at Eagle Ridge this year! In addition to all of that, he is also full of fun energy in our early morning choir rehearsals. He is always respectful, he always tries his best, and he is always willing to do what is asked of him. His favorite song to sing in choir is, “The Belly Button” song. Maybe he will sing it

for you, if you ask him. Your courage to try new things is recognized and applauded, Cameron! Keep up the good work!

Lornah Stoewer (JH Band) Lornah has been chosen as the musician of the month because she is responsible, respectful, and dependable. Mrs. Wilhelm always knows that she can count on Lornah to learn her music to the best of her ability. Lornah is also involved in the school pep band and the school choir. She even had a vocal solo in the Christmas concert this year! In addition, Lornah has decided that she would like to learn a new instrument this year, so she has been working hard to learn the french horn, which is one of the most challenging instruments

of all! She has been consistently taking the french horn home to practice and improve her musical skills. Keep working hard, Lornah!

Charles Wiegel (JH Choir) Charlie has been chosen as the musician of the month because he is kind-hearted, respectful, and always on task in choir. He always does what is asked of him without ever complaining. He is easy-going, always encouraging and helpful, and ready to do what is needed to get the task done. You are a great addition to the school choir. It is a pleasure to have your in choir, Charlie! Keep singing! Hunter Curtiss (JH Art) Hunter was selected as one of the January artists of the month. Hunter really loves art. He likes to draw a lot and has really developed his own personal style. No matter what the assignment is, he knows exactly how to personalize it and make it his own, original work of art. He takes pride in everything he creates. He is polite and respectful and asks for help or advice when he needs it. Keep up the wonderful work, Hunter!

Mickayla Bass (JH Art) Mickayla has been selected as one of the January artists of the month. She is a very motivated artist and puts forth her absolute best effort and it shows because her artwork is always executed beautifully. She takes great pride in creating aesthetically pleasing artwork. She is attentive in class and adds a great deal of relevant topics to class discussions. She’s polite and respectful, isn’t afraid to ask for help, and is always looking for ways to improve her art. She is an absolute pleasure to have in class. Well done and keep it up,

Mickayla!
