Task 1: GCSE knowledge review www.pearsonactivelearn.comUsername: Please make sure you get this on induction dayPassword: Biology123 (Capital letter important)

• Go to work set and do the 7 short tasks and tests that have been set for you- I will be sent your mark so will know if they are done!

• Explore the website to look at what you will be learning!

Task 2: Biology wider readingFind attached some titles of books that will help you and get you into practice for reading around the subjectChoose 1 book to read over the holiday and produce a synopsis of it to share with the rest of the group in September.

Practical

• Aim: to investigate how changing temperature affects the heart rate of invertebrate.

L.O. to set up and use the microscope, to handle living organisms with due care, to consider validity of practical investigations.

Investigating heart rate of Daphnia.1. Set up the Daphnia for viewing under the

microscope:-Place a few threads of cotton wool on the slide,

transfer a Daphnia in a pipette to the slide. It will get trapped in the thread without being harmed.

-Now add water to the petri dish

2. Look through the microscope- you should be able to see the heart beating.

3. Count the number of beats in a minute.

4. What happens to the heart rate when you add some warm (not boiling!) water?

Heart

Daphnia, or fresh water fleas are small crustaceans which are ectothermic, theydo not have

physiological means of controlling their body temperature.

L.O. to set up and use the microscope, to handle living organisms with due care, to consider validity of practical investigations.

Consider:

What is a valid experiment?

If you were investigating the effect of temperature on heart rate of Daphnia how would you make the experiment valid?

What are the ethical implications of this experiment?
