  • Chris Hall says I am humbled by the highregard in which my father is still heldwithin the aviation and modellingcommunity.

As important a part of my Fathers life, but onewith which people are less familiar, is the periodwhen his love of aviation first developed. Hespoke a few years ago of his early memorieswhich led him to become a pilot and of his firstencounter with an airplane at the age of 10.Every year, his Father took the family on holidayto the Isle of Wight but in 1937, they did things alittle dierently by flying in an Airspeed Courierof Portsmouth, Southsea and Isle of WightAirways. This 15 minute flight cost 7s 6d andhaving insisted on sitting next to the pilot, myfather was duly rewarded by being given the jobof winding-up the undercarriage! This encounter with flying left a huge impressionon my Father, his interest being furthercemented in 1938 when his Father took him tothe Hendon Air Day. That Christmas, he receivedhis first model aircraft made by FROG - This wasan Interceptor Mk.4 semi-scale, rubber-bandpowered, flying model and Christmas day wasspent flying it in the park.

September 1939 brought the onset of warwith Germany, but my Father then aged 11, didnot necessarily appreciate the implications ofthis calamity. The war presented him withopportunities due to schools being closed, allowing him to indulge his fascination withflying to a degree that would otherwise not have

been imaginable in peacetime. With major airfields nearby (NorthWeald, Hendon and Hatfield)reachable by bicycle, he and a friendspent most of their days up treesobserving the movements of militaryaircraft at the height of the Battle of Britainuntil school reconvened.

My Father joined the Air Training Corps inApril 1942 giving him access to flights in TigerMoths operating out of RAF Panshanger, wherehe logged up quite a few hours flying time withthe airfield instructors. He set up a school clubaliated to the National Association of SpottersClub, which eventually became the EnfieldBranch. The title Aeroplane Spotter provided theinspiration for Aviation News but it was at thisclub that his first steps at model making tookplace, albeit crafted from wood.

When it came to National Service in 1944, myFathers desire to become a pilot was thwartedas this role was well oversubscribed. My Fatherthought that by extending his time in educationhe could defer entry into the RAF, hoping that bydoing so the bottleneck would have eased, thusopening up opportunities for him to realize hisdream. Alan had done well at English, Historyand Geography at school, but it was a Saturdayclass studying art that presented Alan with theidea that this may provide him with a career.

In 1945 Alan was called up to do his NationalService, at this time the war had drawn to a closeand there was now a surfeit of trained pilots, again thwarting his ambition. After basictraining at RAF Padgate he was oered theposition of Wireless Operator, and at the time hedecided that whatever the RAF threw at him hewas going to get more out of them rather thanvice versa

Alan was posted to RAF Compton Basset inWiltshire to learn his trade in signals. The camp was back logged, resulting in a delayon transfer to advanced training at RAF Cranwellso to avoid boredom and general duties, hevolunteered for the Advanced Drill Squad at RAFHalton. Instruction in advanced drill followedand shortly he found himself representing theRAF at events throughout the country, includingparading at the British Legion Memorial Serviceat the Albert Hall.

My Father was posted to RAF Cranwell, thespiritual home of the RAF and Radio School.Training intensified and it was here that he firstencountered an aircraft that was to become hisfavourite, the Avro Anson. His flying log bookrecorded 12 hours flying at Cranwell in a varietyof Ansons before the passing out parade and hiscoveted Wireless Operators flying badge.

Alan was then posted to the Empire Test PilotsSchool at RAF Cranfield but this time fate hadbeen kind to him. Duties included flying inmulti-engine aircraft while sharing some airtrac control duties. My Father was in heaven.RAF Cranfield was a wonderful posting whichenabled him to get in in as much flying as hecould such as high altitude tests in Lincolns andLancasters, low level runs on Mosquitos and airtrac control, which although less exhilarating, was no less interesting. Thanks to thereorganisation of the Empire Test Pilots Schoolto RAE Farnborough, my Father found himselfposted to Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Setting o

from Docklands, London, he unexpectedlyfound himself in Malta where the ship wascommandeered to take army troops to India tohelp with the unrest. This this was my Fathersfirst taste of this island.

Their ship returned to pick them up some 10weeks later, taking 3 weeks to dock at Durbanand thence by train to Bulawayo. From there thecontingent were split up, some staying at RAFHQ at Kumalo, my father and others being sentto RAF Thornhill near Gwelo in central Rhodesia.

The base had been put on care andmaintenance at the end of WWII, their initial taskinvolved helping to get the base operationalagain. Once back in shape, aircraft, mainly TigerMoths and Harvard AT-6s, began to arrive incrates.

Gradually more aircraft and pilots started toarrive and life on the station became busier. There were two Ansons operational on the baseand my Father found himself a seat on the firstflight of Anson (WK376). The base continued toexpand with four W/Ops running a rota on T20soperational duties. The arrival of Anson MK 20saorded him more flying time and although thelayout of the aircraft had changed this gave Alanmore opportunities to persuade the pilots tochange places. The posting to Rhodesia enabledmy Father to keep his vow to get more out ofthe RAF than they did of him.

During this time he enjoyed some great ad-ventures with like-minded colleagues, visitingVictoria Falls, travelling to Mozambique, andquite by chance finding himself invited to somevery liberally minded beach parties near Durbanin South Africa.

WARPAINT BOOKS CELEBRATE THE THE F-84F THUNDERSTREAK &

Warpaint Books are pleased toannounce the launch at ScaleModel World 2014 of our100th title the F-84F ThunderStreak/Jet & RF-84F Thunderflash

Warpaint Books started production of thecurrent series in 1996, in conjunction with thetitle originator and Editor Alan W Hall, aidedby his elite team of authors and artists. Thisseries from its inception proved to be verypopular with the aircraft enthusiast andmodeller, rapidly growing from strength tostrength. Alan W Hall died suddenly in Maltain 2008 at the age of eighty, just aftercompleting Warpaint No 69 on the Marauder.Alans death left a void which we were notconfident we could fill with his thoughts, ideas and inspirations being locked awaysomewhere in his home in Malta. After muchresearch, we built up sucient knowledgeand regained our confidence, startingproduction of the series in earnest just 3months after Alans death.

I asked Chris Hall, Alan Halls son to give anover view of Alans early life (1932 2008)highlighting the events that aected anddirected him into his publishing career. Ifound the whole exercise fascinating andhope that this will be of as much interest toyou all. The series has grown with somewelcome additions to the existing team ofauthors. Richard Caruana has become ourresident artists and we are spreading our netto cover, German, Japanese and Russiansubject matter and are looking at coveringaircraft from WWI.

  • HE LAUNCH OFF THEIR 100TH TITLEAK & RF-84F THUNDERFLASH ILLUSTRATED BYRICHARD CARUANA

In September 1946 he had completed his Na-tional Service and was ordered back to Kirkhamin Lancashire to be demobbed. Here dischargecertificates and civilian clothes were issued andhe was given 3 months part pay but what of thefuture? He decided to enter a two year NationalDesign Diploma course, choosing lithographyand bookbinding as his core subjects at HornseySchool of Art. There he wrote his first book onthe architecture of the south coast betweenSouthampton and Winchester which earnedhigh praise despite its short print run of 25copies! He also enrolled for a 3 year, part-timecourse at Camberwell School of Art. On passinghis exams he took a one year teaching courseafter which he got his first civilian job at the ageof 24 at Malvern School of Art.

To finance his living expenses while waiting totake up the job at Malvern my Father went to theIsle of Wight, where he worked as a waiter at theShanklin Hotel. He also applied to join the RAFVolunteer Reserve and was only accepted on thebasis that he remained a signaller. He thereforehad no option but to get his pilots licence pri-vately.

At the Isle of Wight Flying Club, Sandown air-field*, he took as many flying lessons as he couldaord. The school was run by two women one ofwhich, Vera Strod, became his instructor withflights to Croydon, Southampton and Shoreham. It was a wonderful summer and although he had

not completed the full training, he had amassed30 hours of dual and solo flying before leaving totake up his post at Malvern. Shortly thereafter hecompleted the course and qualified at nearbyStaverton aerodrome. His passion for aviationand his chosen career in graphic arts led himinto journalism in the 1960s, and by the early 70she had the skill and confidence to share withothers, the passion that had captivated him atthe age of 10 in that short 15 minute flight

*Note: At his request his ashes were scattered onthe airfield after his death in November 2008.

Some 80 years on, I am delighted that my Fa-thers legacy continues as we reach issue 100 inthe Warpaint series. Under the wise and steadyhand of Alans long time friend Regis Auckland, the principles and ideas associated withWarpaint Books continue in this well establishedpublication. Not only do these publications pro-vide the reader with authoritative service histo-ries, the camouflage schemes and line drawingsprovide a valuable information source to bothmodel-makers and enthusiasts alike.

Warpaint Books were the last publicationsthat my Father edited, and they probably bestencapsulate what he enjoyed most about in-dulging his passion. It is tremendously satisfyingand makes me very proud to see that it enduresand continues to meet the needs of the aviationenthusiast and modelling community.

    Annual Spectacular

Welcome to the Scale Aircraft ModellingIPMS UK Nationals Special Edition. Thisyear is dedicated to commemoratingthe 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the FirstWorld War and we have a few articles dedicatedto the subject. I am very proud to say that thismonths Aviation in Profile feature has beenwritten by none other than Ray Rimell himself. I

thought about attempting to write my first AinP feature on a WWIsubject, but then saw sense and figured Who knows the subjectbetter?

For those of you not attending the show for whatever reason, who are reading this a few weeks later when the magazine has itsgeneral release, I apologise. All of the above will be irrelevant. However, if you do ever have the opportunity to attend ScaleModelWorld, I strongly recommend it. This show is one of theworlds premier modelling events and a showcase for not onlysome of the greatest modelling talent from the UK and beyond, but also for British hospitality at its finest. The IPMS UK are gracioushosts, something that is evidenced by the healthy attendance fromall over the world. Guys like Raanan Weiss from Isradecal makesthe trip from Israel, Roy Sutherland and Mike Belcher make the tripfrom North America, Zoukei-Mura come from Japan, just to name afew. I could go on for this entire column citing from the ratherimpressive list of manufacturers the IPMS UK gather every year foryour modelling acquisitions, but I think you get the idea.

All would be for nought, though, if it werent for those IPMSmembers (and non-IPMS members as well) who pass through theturnstiles and continue to make the event what it is, year after year.Attendance seems to creep up by a thousand or so every year; atestament to the organisation and appeal the show has. Magazinesand the internet modelling websites can promote the show asmuch as they like, but it is the word of mouth from satisfiedmodellers that carry the most weight, in my opinion.

In the six or seven years that I have been attending the show Ihave seen evidence of this in the way the overseas section hasgrown. So much so it has had to be moved in order to keep theflow of traffic around the halls moving. These far flung modellersfrom Belgium, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Poland, Austria,Germany (and my mate Pete Mossong from New Zealand alwaysmanages to make the trip) and beyond have all gone home andtold their mates about the show and in doing so, inspire more andmore modellers to make the trek. Which brings me to one of myfavourite aspects of a show like this.

Yes, the competition is important; however, a show like thisgives us the opportunity to expand our friendship circle beyondour national borders. Yes, we all have x amount of friends onfacebook, many pals from overseas on the modelling discussiongroups, but nothing makes for a more sincere friendship thanshaking hands in person and hoisting a malted beverage. As youperuse the tables, take the opportunity to chat to the personsitting on the other side. Get to know some of the modellers whohave made a long journey to the show, or even those who poppeddown the road. It could be the start of a lifelong friendship.

    Until Next Month,

As we move into the autumn, the number of shows tends todie down. Fortunately thequality of these shows remainsas high as ever, and this was nomore evident than at OldWarden for Shuttleworthsmilitary pageant. Held on astunning summers evening, beneath clear blue skies and

with only the hint of abreeze, the magic ofOld Warden wasunleashed.

A full and healthy line-up of theresident aircraft and the oddvisitor entertained the crowdsfor a full three hours of superbflying. All very good, but themore dedicated members ofthe audience who stayed wellafter the flying ceased wererewarded by one of thehighlights of the season,

    overshadowing the

normally show stealingappearance of the Edwardians. As the sun set, for the first timein two decades, the collectionsD.H.88 Comet flew in a publicdisplay. It has been a long timecoming, and for those there, certainly did not disappoint.

The followingweekend sawthe IWM atDuxford hostits Septembershow. Althougha fairlystandardaffaircompared to

recent years, there werenevertheless plenty ofhighlights. In their penultimatedisplay weekend, the pair ofLancasters once again wowedthe huge crowds that had piledinto Duxford on the Sunday. Byfar the rarest aircraft on showwas the 727, the type's first UKdisplay for many a year, andflown with plenty of verve inthe capable hands of pilot DanGriffith. The bulk of the flyingprogramme was made up ofthe resident warbirds, superblyflown as ever, especially the trioof US Navy warbirds- Corsair,Hellcat and Bearcat. All in all, afine end to Duxfords season.

No list of thistype could becomplete without

including the Tamiya 1:48thscale P-51D Mustang. It isregarded by many modellers as

one of the most perfectlybuilding kits available, incorporating the legendaryTamiya moulding qualitythroughout. The recessed panellines are as perfectly renderedas it can get. Another endearingaspect of this kit is the blemishfree surfaces, making it ideallysuited for the many naturalmetal finishes that can beapplied to the Mustang.

Although the kit is wellendowed with details straightout of the box, it has notstopped the aftermarket fromproducing aplethora ofresin andphoto-etcheddetailing setswith which totake things up

to another level. In addition, many decal sheets are alsoavailable in the scale coveringjust about any famous Mustangout there, as well as many otherstandard squadron aircraft.

    EVENTS CALENDAR

What is the recipe for aperfect model show? You have apretty good idea if you arereading this after having pickedup the magazine at the IPMS UKNationals Take one partTelford and one part ScaleModel Challenge, and youcannot go wrong.

I have been making the trip toVeldhoven for several years nowand would not miss it unlesscircumstances conspiredconsiderably against me. Overthe past several years I haveseen this show grow in not onlyscope but concept as well, and itpromises to grow even further. Ithas traditionally beenconsidered an armour andfigure show, however under theguidance of RobertCrombeecke, the aviation sidehas expanded considerably. Thecompetition is intense and thelevel of modelling on displayastonishing. What makes thisshow really special, however, isthe organisation. Scale ModelFactory put on a clinic oforganisational skills year in andyear out, and there are only acouple of shows I attend wherethere is such a positive sense ofcommunity. The show has a

magical combination of beinglocated in the NH ConferenceCentre Konigshof, with on-siteaccommodation in a superbhotel, meaning the nightlife andsocial aspect is fantastic.

This year I had the honour ofpresenting the first Scale AircraftModelling Best in Show Aircraftmodel to Aitor Azkue for hisastonishing diorama called TheWinners are Coming, in whichhe utilised the Zoukei-Mura He219 and Trumpeter Me 262. Ihave included some images ofthe diorama with this report, however it is not unless you seeit in person that you can graspthe sheer talent that went intoits production.

SAM contributor Yves van denBrouck took Silver with his 32ndTamiya Spitfire (soon to appearin SAM) as well.

As I mentioned earlier, it is agenuine pleasure to make thetrip to Veldhoven every year, andI have to thank all of the guys atSMF for their hospitality.Especially Margot Crombeecke, who organises the annualSaturday trip to the historicalsights. She was a little annoyedwith me this year though, as Iwas late for the bus toAmsterdam after partaking alittle too much in the socialfestivities on Friday night (Iblame Alex Uschi van derRosten who broke out theJgermeister late in theevening). Sorry Margot!

This year saw the largest UKcontingent I have seen yet, so ifyou can make it, add to nextyears English speaking crowdYou will not regret it.

IWCL-100 Iwata Airbrush Cleaning Kit 22.50

In my opinion proper airbrush maintenance is one of the mostgrossly overlooked aspects of modelling and the reason for 99%of the difficulties we encounter when spraying. It is not a lack ofability that keeps us from consistent success with the airbrush, itis a maintenance issue. However, obtaining the right tools tomake cleaning simple is not always easy as we generally acquirewhat we need from a variety of places, making it difficult toconsistently have the tools we need to hand on a regular basis.Iwata-Medea have finally addressed this problem with theirsuperb Airbrush Cleaning kit. Collected into one convenientpackage is everything required to keep your airbrush in first ratecondition. Included are:

Three small cleaning brushes (dental style) 50 Pipe Cleaners (non-shredding cotton fibre) Artool Studio Wipes (x 12 wipes) 1 ounce bottle of Medea Airbrush Cleaner Medea Super Lube Iwata Nozzle Wrench Iwata LED Light Powered Magnifier

IWCL-200; Iwata Airbrush Cleaning Mat 19.50

Storing parts whilst cleaning has always been a precariousproposition for me, as I have spent more than a few hours of mylife looking for a nozzle cap or chuck that has rolled off the tableand into the realm of the unforgiving 'Carpet Monster'. This largenon-skid surface mat eliminates this problem with ease. Theraised edge keeps all of your parts in one place until the airbrushis ready to be re-assembled.

Alexander Glass made a splash on the modelling market a fewyears back with the release of his spectacular Woodgrain Decalsand he has proven that he has the ability to continually innovatewith a steady stream of imaginative and extremely usefulproducts. I ran into Alex at Scale Model Challenge in Veldhovenand he passed some superb items onto me there.

The application of superglue is always problematic as I generallytend to stick my fingers together more than I do parts, so the CA-NDLE photo-etched applicator will come in very handy. Thevarious sized tips allow for a capillary action to take the glue tothe part, much more effectively than the toothpicks I have beenusing thus far.

Breaking bits is another ongoing frustration for me, and Uschisdurable steel bits are of the highest quality and will last muchlonger than most. You can buy the bits in a combo set thatincludes an Archimedes twist drill as well. Alex has somewonderful demo videos on this website, so a virtual trip there iswell worth it.

If there was one aspect of using Eduards superb colour etchedharnesses (regardless of scale) that I did not relish, it wasassembling the tiny buckles and latches. Eduard continuallyprove they are innovators of the highest order, while listening tothe demands of their customers as well. That is obviously the casehere as these new pre-paintedharness sets are the culmination ofthe best elements of the differentapproaches taken by differentmanufacturers to harness detailsets. These are fragile and great careneeds to be exercised whenremoving them from theirbacking sheet. I recommendusing a scalpel to lift the part andtweezers when handling it. The instructions also quiteprominently warn against usingCA glue, so I imagine usingacrylic varnish or White glue tofix the harness in place is thebest option. Jay Laverty

Hitting the shelves just as this issue is wrapping up are two eagerlyanticipated kits we have been closely following the progress ofhere in SAM. After having a look through the Cougar, it isimmediately evident that the cooperation between Detail & Scaleand their Chinese manufacturer is paying dividends on the detailfront. The only weak point in my opinion is the rendition of thewheels, whereas aspects such as the ejection seats areoutstanding, the external surface recessed detail both accurateand restrained, the clear parts are superb and a healthy collectionof ordnance is included. 2 x External Drop Tank 4 x AIM-9B Sidewinder Missile 4 x 2.75 Inch Rocket Pod

The markings options are varied and colourful, comprising threeUS Navy schemes and one from the Argentine Navy.

    Lightning Strikes Thrice

The F-35C (Naval Variant) rounds out the Lightning II range fromKitty Hawk, incorporating new and improved parts, along with acomprehensive photo-etched fret providing canopy details, exhaust burner ring and of course the harness for the ejectionseat. The following armament is also included: 2 x AIM-120 2 x AIM-9X 2 x GBU-12 2 x GBU-31 & 31B 2 x GBU-38

Markings comprise three of the test airframes, along withproduction airframe 001, in the markings of VFA-101.

Decales Global are a new name to me, although after someinvestigation it was obvious they have been around a while, asthey have a considerable catalogue of decals in their range.

Manufactured in Mexico, these decals are of a high quality; inkjetprinted on a continuous decal film. One nice aspect is that eachsheet contains a set of cabin and cockpit window decals so thatyou can use these, rather than masking up all the clear plasticparts. No instructions are provided, other than the single colourprofile on the cover sheet, meaning a little research will beneeded. These look to be promising decals, and I will hopefullyget my hands on appropriate kits in order to try them out andreport back soon.

Part of the injection moulded sprues was designed using 3-D CADtechnology, as was the superb resin wicker seat. This is a true multi-media release, as also included is a small photo-etched metal fretcomprising the harness and other small details for the cockpit andexterior.

Special Hobby have raised their game throughout the entireproduction process, with full colour instructions printed on glossypaper. The Wartime Colours kit features three markings optionsfor frontline service airframes, whereas the Checkers & Stripespresents four very colourful trainers.

As I mentioned earlier, placing Wingnut Wings expectations on thiskit will lead to disappointment, however approaching it with anopen mind and the anticipation of a highly detailed, reasonablyeasy building experience, will lead to ultimate satisfaction.

  • Aviattic have justbeen in touch withus and let us knowabout a highlyexciting andextremelyambitious releaseschedule for 2015that will see themestablished as oneof the masters of the WWI modelling scene, in my opinion. Firstlyis their first full kit, a resin and multi-media affair of the AnsaldoBalilla A.1 Italian Fighter of 1918 that should be available in thespring of 2015. Some test shot elements may be on the Aviatticstand at Telford. Speaking of on display at Telford, test shotpreviews should also be available of the 1:32nd DaimlerMarienfeld WWI German transport lorry (Which will include aspecially sculpted figure by Steve Arrilow) and the resin extras forthe Wingnut Wings D.VII including the wings and tailsurfaces,photo-etched details and a spectacular strip-down mastermodeller set for those wishing to take their Fokker into anotherdimension .

Available for Scale ModelWorld is the 1:32nd scale SiemensHalske SH.IIIWWIGerman rotary engine asused in the SiemensSchuckert D.III and D.IVas well as manyexperimental types.

There are so many otherthings to tell you about, however I am out of timeand space this month, soplease check back in nextissue to find out whatAviattic are planningJay Laverty

    Zeppelins At War!,

    By: Ray Rimell

    Format: A4, 72 pp, Softvover

Price: 26.00 The first two volumes inthe Zeppelin seriescovered the wartimeuse of P and Q classships while the secondcovered the larger Rclass machines. A thirdvolume is still underdevelopment and willcover the subsequentclasses up to the finalL70 type. This volumeis a prequel to thesethree covering theearliest wartime use ofthe Zeppelinincluding the threecivilian machinespressed into militaryservice.

I suppose that like manypeople I was aware thatthe Zeppelins wereused on raids againstBritish cities duringWWI, but until readingthis book I wasunaware of the fullextent of their use.

The book covers thehistory of 19 machinesfrom the early ViktoriaLuise (LZ11) up to theLZ39. In doing so itdescribes the use ofthe Zeppelin on theRussian Front, theraids on Belgium andFrance and the battlesagainst Royal Navysurface ships and submarines in the North Sea.There are some fascinating first-hand accounts detailing personalexperiences of the crews of the Zeppelins and from those on thereceiving end of their raids. The human cost of the war is broughtstarkly home by a harrowing account of the destruction of LZ37by RAJ Warneford by the one surviving crewman.

There are over 140 period photos including some of thedefensive machine-gun positions, 1:350 plans of N and O classZeppelins,1:96 plans of their gondolas by Martin Digmayer, andcolour profiles of LZ37 and Warnefords Morane monoplane. Thephotos are excellent showing the sheer size of the Zeppelins, their structure and some of the internal features. The photo ofthe one of the sub-cloud cars in which a crewman wassuspended beneath the clouds several hundred feet below theZeppelin to relay information to the ship hidden above theclouds is frankly terrifying!

I found this a fascinating book and it can be highlyrecommended to anyone with an interest in early aviation.

Popping up on the competition tables at the Lviv Scale ModelFest this year was a very interesting 1:72nd scale Beriev Be-12Mail. Information on the Russian Internet forum, scalemodels.ru,has it that this was built from a test shot of moulds in productionby Modelsvit of a fully injection moulded kit. One can only hopethat this is correct as a decent kit of this venerable seaplane islong overdue.

Moulded with separate underwing cannon bulges anda separate cowling, a variety of options are availablethroughout the range. RS Models are very much a short-runproducer, meaning some intermediate modelling skills are arequirement, although the level of detail represented is farabove what has thus far been produced. In careful and patienthands, a superb model can easily be achieved.

This month starts with the re-release of the Classic Airframes1:48th scale Walrus in three guises which, if the prices paid on eBayare anything to go by, will be widely well received. The kit is short-run technology of about 10 years ago, so expect an intermediateskill build. The Lodestar is a more modern tooling and a well-regarded kit, this time released with new markings for a variety ofPacific based operators including the US, New Zealand, Australiaand the Dutch.

Rounding out this months kit parade is the second release of theimpressive 1:72nd scale Vampire (third including the originalXtrakit) which is probably Special Hobbys finest release to date. This version includes remoulded intakes and a new horizontalstabiliser.

    COMPACT BUILD REVIEW

    A Flying Start

Originallydesignated ST (SportsTrainer) the Ryan PT-20/STM-2 was developed as acivilian aerobatic aircraft andfirst flew in 1934. By 1939 it wasaccepted into the US Army AirCorps and this was when itreceived the ST(M) for Militarydesignation. Prior to theoutbreak of World War Two, thelittle Ryan became a successfulexport to many countriesaround the world. The outbreakof war only served to increasedemand.

The STM-2 and PT-20 variantsserved with the NetherlandsEast Indies Army and Navy andalso the Royal Australian AirForce, these aircraft being fittedwith the more powerfulMenasco C4S inline engine. Thisengine in particular gave thenose of the Ryan a more thanpassing resemblance to thesimilarly purposed Miles

Magister, as wascommented on by anumber of my fellowcontributors.

    Distant Admirer

For some years now I havebeen a distant admirer of PaulFishers kits, particularlybecause early US Navy jets areamong my favourite modellingtopics and my preferred scale is1:32nd. It was certainly asurprise when his latest releaseturned out to be a pre-wartrainer, which is quite adeparture from the Panther,Cougar and Skyray that havebeen the trademark of hisprevious production catalogue.Nevertheless, when I had theopportunity to build a Fishermodel I jumped at the chance, regardless of the subject.Training aircraft are noteveryones cup of tea, as theyoften take a back seat to themore glamorous and excitingfighters. However, they do havean important place, not onlyamongst any model collectionbut also, in the hearts of themany pilots that learned theircraft in them. To this day the

    Ryan has

become a much sought aftercollectible amongst classicaircraft enthusiasts.

    Getting to Grips

Resin kits do present adifferent set of constructionchallenges and to theuninitiated modeller reared ona steady diet of injectionmoulded plastic kits they canprove quite intimidating. Thiswas the case for me, as thismindset had put me offattempting all-resin kits in thepast, even though I amcomfortable with the use ofresin aftermarket upgrades. It isstrange really, as putting anentire injection moulded kittogether is often far easier thanhaving to manoeuvre a resincockpit into a model, with all itsincumbent sanding andtrimming.

What is most predominantduring the firstexamination of

    the kit isthat it has

    been cast in such

    COMPACT BUILD REVIEW

While Epoxy resins are a brilliant way of ensuring adurable bond, superglue, such as Deluxes RoketRapid are just as good and reduce drying timesubstantially.

IPA is an excellent, and easily obtainable product, forcleaning the mould release agent from the kit andalso as a solvent for removing excess filler.

A coat of Alclad Grey Micro Primerexposes any areas that may need remedial attention. It also polishes to a smoothfinish and bonds to the surface preventing the topcoats from peeling.

I was pleasantly surprised by the low parts count for a 32nd scale model, in an age whereit seems some manufacturers deliberately increase the parts count for a variety of reasons.

The decals are excellent and respond well to settingsolutions, conforming perfectly to both raised and recessed detail.

A set of PCB drills is invaluable when it comes to making the locating holes for therigging. Choose your favourite material for thebracing wires, as suggested in the instructions.

After trying the photo-etchedrigging (and failing), I foundit easier to use fishing line asit did not sag or kink. Ilearned quite a lot from thisexperience.

a way that itwill require aminimal amount ofclean-up prior toassembly. The parts countis also relatively low, thereforethere are few seams andmating surfaces to deal with. And those there are can easilybe dealt with using a sandingstick.

When it comes to gluingparts together, it can bedone usingCyanoacrylate or Epoxyadhesives, which have theadded benefit that, oncesanded, provide a smooth, strong and invisible seam. Ofcourse the best thing aboutresin is the detail that can becaptured and in the case of hismodels, Paul Fisher is obviouslya master craftsman. The superbsurface and interior details areaugmented in the cockpit withthe use of photo-etchedinstrument panels andharnesses. The comprehensiveinstruction sheet contains adetailed descriptive account ofthe construction process andunusually for a manufacturer, warns you about any potentialpitfalls you may encounter.Proving that not only aftermastering the parts, Paul hastaken the time to sit down andbuild the model beforereleasing it into the world.

The instructions for therigging provide the perfectexample. Photo-etched wiresare provided in the kit, however, a warning is giventhat these can be subject tosagging in differingtemperatures. Therefore, alternative methods aresuggested and in my case Iwent with fishing line, aftergiving the photo-etched a tryand finding that keeping thetension and also not damagingthem when removing from thefret was too much for me to

    manage.

    Weather or Not?

When it comes to thepainting and weathering ofmodels it is purely a matterof personal choice, regardless of what thecommon perception of it is.While there are conceptions ofhow much weathering a trainershould have, or an activefighter, a jet or airliner, thesimple way to do it properly isto work from evidence.

In this particular case, I wentwith a more subdued approachthan with my recent builds.Pictures of the particularaircraft I decided to make fromthe markings options showedthat it suffered from sunbleaching, general chippingand an accumulation of dust, before ending up in a crumpledheap after an accident.

    Clear winner

Although not my first fullresin kit, this was my firstexperience with resinwindscreens and I was verypleasantly surprised. The thingthat struck me about them wasthat they were very thin andclear, as I my

    existingconception of clear

resin was that it was thickand murky. When masking, handling and painting resincanopies, I would recommendshoring up the interior with BluTack, as they are fragile.

Everything that makes upthis kit is of the highest quality, including the decal sheet, which is in perfect register andhas good colour saturation.

    No Hesitation

It is a tired clich now, but Ifirmly believe t
