Dear SCACS Family,

Hello everyone! What an excit-ing year 2012 has been so far – oil is down, weather is hot

and the economy is even looking up in this elec-tion year! Oh, and I got married (I know, I can’t believe it either)!

Back to SCACS, while I have been honeymooning, the convention team and your board of directors have been as busy as ever planning what is shap-ing up to be our biggest and best convention yet! We have an amazing few days planned for Hilton Head from Sunday, July 15th to Wednesday, July 18th. Leigh wanted me to remind you that it is not too late to register but “you better hurry!”

This year we will be at the Omni Hotel – don’t worry, it’s the same legendary hotel just a new name. Our convention co-chairs Rich and Larry have been working hard as usual and here is a quick list of some of the neat changes com-ing this summer. The golf is changing to a Ryder Cup/Match play format featuring two teams, Clemson and Carolina – don’t forget to wear your favorite color (orange or that other color). This should be a lot of fun and will be a quicker for-mat in the summer heat. The spouse program is going to be a kitchen event with an island chef from Serg Group of Restaurants – he is going to teach a course on how to make Mad Men cock-tails & entrees. I hope my wife can attend this one! We’re also adding a cornhole tournament to everyone’s favorite event “relaxing by the pool”. I have a feeling there should be some good com-petition this year!

The one compliment we hear every year about the SCACS convention is just how family-friendly it is. We are so proud to hear that and I am very excited to bring my new, beautiful wife Megan to the convention this year. Please take a moment to say hi and welcome her to the SCACS family. It’s going to be bittersweet this summer because it’s my last summer as your president. I have been honored to serve the association as president and I am so very grateful that you have given me the opportunity to do so. See you soon!

CSThe SCACS Golf Classic is an annual passage into spring, and this year’s tournament was a sold-out event with the maximum number of teams and tons of sponsors and supporters.

The Committee works hard each year to try and add something new and/or different and this year that was a hole-n-one opportunity for a new car. This addition was timely as it helped introduce the new SCACS membership benefit program (of purchasing new automobiles from the Jim Hudson Automotive Group at invoice). Several came close to taking home the Ford Convertible Mustang that was displayed on the course. Many even “tried it on for size.”

A very big “thank you” to Jeff Ham, RJ Reynolds, who continues to chair this event and to his committee as they could be seen working from sun-up that morning to the close of tourna-ment.

We can’t thank the players and sponsors enough because without them . . . there would be no event. And thank you again to the companies listed on page 5. They help make the tourna-ment EVEN MORE FUN with the many treats, amenities and games.

Mr. Hudson, 67, grew up on a tobacco farm in Turkey, N.C. He is a first-generation dealer. He started with an Oldsmobile dealership in 1980. VIC HENLEY, COMEDIANA true comedy veteran, Alabama-born Vic Henley has done it all. Co-author of a national bestselling book with fellow comedian Jeff Foxworthy, Vic has

Bruce Pearl was a college basketball coach for 20 years. He was the head coach at Southern Indiana, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, and who most

recently served as head coach at the University of Tennessee. He is a graduate of Boston College, where he obtained his first position as an assistant

basketball coach. He was the first coach to lead the Tennessee Volunteers to a national #1 ranking, and has won six National Coach of the Year awards.

Pearl has also served as the head coach for the Maccabi USA basketball team in the 2009 World Maccabi Games. Pearl is currently a basketball analyst

for SiriusXM radio’s College Sports Nation, and is the Vice President of Marketing for H.T. Hackney Co.

LEGISLATIVE GUESTS AND PROGRAMMINGSCACS’ involvement in the legislative process is probably the most recognizable benefit for members – supplier and retailer! After all, the legislative

process regulates how, when, where and sometime how much we are able to do business in this state.

We are excited to have a first-time legislative guest on the SCACS Legislative Panel this year. Representative Bill Sandier (R-Oconee) serves as Chairman

of the powerful House Labor, Commerce and Industry. He is a longtime supporter of SCACS -- and we are excited to have Chairman Sandifer joining us.

Chairman Sandifer will be joined by Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Representative Brian White (R-Anderson), Representative Mike

Gambrel (R-Anderson), Senators Jake Knotts (R-Lexington) and Shane Martin (R-Spartanburg). These legislators have attended our convention for many

years and remain stalwart supporters of the SCACS legislative agenda at the State House.

As always, the relationships and exchanges with these legislators, particularly in this more laid-back environment, will help SCACS better understand and

traverse the political waters of the year ahead.

The Convention Golf Tournament this summer is changing format to a Ryder Cup style Match Play tournament. If you’ve never played match play before,

it is a fun, exciting and FAST way to play. You will be paired with another player on your team and you will play match play against the other cart in your

foursome.

The two competing teams will be Clemson & South Carolina, and we’ll award a trophy to the winning team on Monday night at the live auction (it’s ok if

you don’t have a preference, we’ll assign you to a team based on balance and your handicap).

To be a part of the fun, simply fill out your golf registration and pick a team. For this event, it is imperative to write down your average score or handicap.

Be sure to wear your team colors (Clemson Orange, White or Purple) or S. Carolina (Garnet/Black) during the tournament!

SCACS’s unique educational program, Merchandising 101

and 201, the brainstormed program created by members

Jack O’Malley, Bountyland Food Stores and Phil Gram-

aglia, MillerCoors, continued this year with a focus on “the

cooler.” A panel of vendors and even audience partici-

pants shared best practices and ideas on merchandising “in the cooler.” The educa-

tional program also featured several speakers who ad-dressed specific legal and

security issues as they pertain to store set-up, construction and practices. You can look

forward to a Merchandis-ing 301 next year. Plans are

already underway.

SCACS hosted a new event at this year’s Petro Show, a membership breakfast. Close to a hundred members attended far exceeding our expectations. In addition to a hot, sit-down, breakfast three of the association’s membership benefits programs were briefly explained. “We believe our members are able to comprehend the programs offered better when they can ‘hear’ it explained and in many cases put a face with a name of the person who represents the benefit program,” said Leigh Faircloth, SCACS Executive Director.

Once again, thanks to Cline and Associates, seated massages were offered at the SCACS booth which made it a welcome “landing spot” for many. Members who visited the booth were able to add their name to a drawing for a $500 gift card.

A special thank you to Mike Jones, Frito-Lay, Inc., and Sheri Mehaffey, Blythewood Oil Company for their leadership of the committee that provided plans and set up for the Petro Show. Thank you too for the SCACS Board Members who “work” the booth. We believe their partici-pation at and in the booth draws others. This type of service leadership sets SCACS a part!
