The PureWave® SMS-250 is a

state-of-the-art air-cooled four-

quadrant converter that transforms

electric energy from AC to DC for storage

in a battery system and then from

DC to AC for dispatch to the load.

Its design boasts an integrated architecture that highlights reliability, performance, functionality, versatility, modularity, and serviceability. The power pole is the basic building block of the PureWave SMS-250. It gives it a modular architecture which allows for tangible benefits such as easier handling and assembly, increased reliability, lower cost maintenance, and greater uptime availability.

The PureWave SMS-250 is designed for both 50-Hz and 60-Hz applications and can

be connected to 380-Vac, 400-Vac or, with an auto transformer, to 415 or 480-Vac. The PureWave SMS-250 is housed in a 36 inch wide, 36 inch deep, and 76 inch tall, (W: 914 mm, D: 914 mm, H: 1930 mm), NEMA-3R, (IP54), outdoor enclosure. Other environmental enclosure design features are available upon request.

The control platform combines robust control algorithms and communication protocols ensuring a flexible converter configuration and versatile applications enabling stable,

effective, and efficient solutions for energy management, power smoothing, grid stability, and power quality. S&C’s web-based HMI systems allow monitoring of the entire energy storage system and provide operational as well as historical data. They also allow for setup and display of all components of the system including the converter, battery, and SMS systems. See specifications table for detail design data in this brochure.

The PureWave SMS-250 is a modular and scalable power converter. Multiple PureWave SMS-250 converters can be paralleled to achieve your optimum-sized system. Two PureWave SMS-250 converters can easily be configured to operate in parallel, via the control system setup software, to form a 500-kW system. A group of more than two PureWave SMS-250 units can operate in paralleled mode under the supervision of a master controller. The connection to the grid can be achieved either through individual transformers for each PureWave SMS-250 or through a single large transformer applied to the total system.

Voltage OptionsThe standard PureWave SMS-250 offering is provided with a 380-Vac power converter system. Other voltages including 480 Vac are available by using the optional autotransformer. For application requiring a wider dc input voltage range, a dc-dc converter module is available for connection to 400 Vdc through 800 Vdc. The dc converter will increase the converter kVA to 330 kVA for 480-Vac System.

While the PureWave SMS-250 is designed to work with batteries from various manufacturers, the standard offering includes a pre-engineered one-hour Li-ion battery system. Other available battery solutions include sodium sulfur, sodium nickel chloride, lead-acid, and flow as well as other Li-ion chemistries.

The PureWave SMS-250 advanced control system ensures the safe, reliable, and fast installation of your entire energy storage system. Combined with a proprietary control interface to the Battery Management System, which monitors key battery variables, (voltage, temperature, and current, among others), S&C’s proprietary control algorithms ensure safe and reliable operation to help extend the useful service life of your energy storage system (resulting in longer battery life).
