This workbook covers underground coal mines, andis very similar to a parallel Workbook that has beendeveloped or all sites other than coal mines. The twoWorkbooks or this subject one or undergroundcoal mines, and the other or all other sites aredeliberately similar and have subtle di erences. The
principles involved are the same or all shot ring, but theprecautions are stricter or underground coal mines sothe practices di er and are constrained in some areas. The Learner Resources are slightly slimmer as a result.Workbooks are not much slimmer and will look the same, though there are word and term changes, and subtledi erences in ocus. However, or key principle and orcareer progression reasons, the Learner Resources andWorkbooks are kept in parallel so that a person canmove rom underground coal mines to other sites, or theother way around, and take advantage o the progressthey have already made.
The delivery o all our Modules in the Shot ring courseinvolves workshops, demonstrations and workplacepractice. Each Learner Workbook helps you to work through the Learner Resource and complete theassessment tasks. It can also help you to:
plan your study
build your skill as a learner
plan ways to apply and practise whatyou learn (use it, or lose it).
Your workplace trainer will guide you through the materialand some o the activities, and will help you develop alearning approach to ensure you can apply your learning.
This Workbook and Record Book helps a Trainer and an Assessor to develop and assess your required knowledgeand skill.
WoRKBooK
Throughout this Workbook there are Review Questionsthat will test your knowledge o the subject. There arealso some Learning and Assessment Tasks through thebook that help develop your knowledge and skills. Earlyon in this book you will nd a sel -assessment checklist tohelp you and your Trainer to determine the areas that you
will need to develop urther.

Activity
Compile a suite o typical records maintained in relationto the use o explosives, including a copy o the site sa etypolicy.
This task will require you to track down a variety orecords, so dont get bogged down in detail.
Rather you should begin to see the context o the recordsrom two major perspectives:
1. to see records o the our components o work,
namely the managed working environment, equipmentand materials, people, and processes; and,2. to see how the continuous improvement loop
requires sites to have a clear aim or intentor sa e operation, to have a logical approach
or plan to achieve that aim, to implement theplan, to monitor the plans implementation, andlastly to make on-going improvements basedon the acts derived rom the monitoring.
On every record you might make a note o yourinvolvement in the record-keeping. For example, youmight note this is a copy o the record I (or our team, orthe shot rer, or my/our supervisor, or the maintenanceperson, etc) made on (date) ollowing (the blast, activity, concern expressed, etc).
On another example you might note your review o aprocedure/training etc.
Technical Information
You may be able to obtain a copy o your sitesdocuments rom your supervisor, the person responsible
or magazines, the shot rer on site, a senior blastingsupervisor, technical person or mining/civil engineer, andi that isnt success ul by asking the mine/quarry/civilconstruction manager or even a blasting contractor.
