We like to think the Patriots had something to do with this unprec-edented run of championships in New England as it all started with our Super Bowl XXXVI victory in Febru-ary 2002 and continued with the Patriots winning three of New England’s four championships from 2001-2004.

All this winning has coined Boston the “City of Champions,” but we think Foxbor-ough, following the Patriots sixth champion-ship (half of the region’s 12 championships over the last 18 years) has unequivocally become America’s “Title Town.”

And we have you, our fans, friends and neighbors, to thank for this.

Throughout the 2018 season, we saw time and time again why the Patriots have the best fans in not just the NFL, but in all of sports. Since being drafted by the Patriots in 2010, there has not been a more dominant or productive tight end in the NFL than Rob Gronkowski. On March 24, after nine NFL sea-sons and three Super Bowl championships, Gronk announced his retirement.

His NFL resume almost certainly makes him a first ballot Hall of Famer, but the legacy he leaves behind goes well beyond football.

the success of their team. And it showed again during another run in January, another Super Bowl championship in February and another parade.

We were amazed by the more than 35,000 fans who attended the Patriots Send-Off Rally at Gillette Stadium the week before Super Bowl LIII. The atmosphere reaffirmed our feeling that being able to represent Foxborough and New England in the Super Bowl is a tremendous privilege that never gets old.

Even Coach Belichick couldn’t help but marvel at the over-whelming support.

“This is an awesome crowd, just tremendous,” Belichick told the thousands of fans. “This is the biggest send-off we’ve ever had.”

Among those in the crowd was the Foxborough High School Marching Band, who the Patriots invited to perform during the rally.

“It was a great opportunity to support the Patriots and play for all of the fans who came out to the rally and to experience all of it with the rest of Patriots Nation,” said FHS Band Director Aaron Bush. “We loved it.”

Additionally, the first 200 Fox-borough residents who attended the rally were rewarded with VIP access, placing the hometown fans near the front of the stage. Foxborough Police & Fire led the Patriots buses out of Gillette Sta-dium and onto Route 1 en route to the airport.

upgrades to the system’s signal system and track to be com-pleted.

MassDOT will continue to work with Foxborough and Kraft

Group officials to finalize the pilot program’s schedule and outreach about the new service.

The 11.5-month pilot program will run commuter rail trains from Foxborough/Patriot Place Station to Boston via the Fairmount Line.

Trains will not travel south of Fox-borough beyond Patriot Place and will not travel across any grade crossings in town. For more infor-mation about the pilot program, please email [email protected].

The Partners in Patriotism (PIP) Fund is entering its fifth year as a registered nonprofit in Foxborough and is expected to reach a significant giving milestone in its support of the community in 2019.

Since the Kraft family’s founding of the PIP Fund in 2014, the nonprofit has awarded more than $425,000 to Foxborough-based groups, organizations, individuals and community projects com-mitted to providing a positive impact and improving the quality of life in Town.

Of the more than $425,000 in dona-tions, more than $115,000 has been awarded to supporting students and educational programs in the Foxborough schools, more than $67,000 has sup-ported town-wide athletes and athletic programs, nearly $78,000 has support-ed community programs and town-wide events and more than $42,000 has supported Town projects like the Foxbor-ough Flag Pole, the Global War on Terror Monument on the Common and the Sharon Wason Pavilion at the Payson Recreational Complex.

Over the years, the PIP Fund has also served the community as a means of financial assistance to Foxborough residents who have experienced sudden loss or find themselves in an emergency financial situation. To date, the PIP Fund has donated nearly $123,000 to resi-dents in financial need to help them get back on their feet.

In 2018 the PIP Fund began award-ing up to five, $5,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who reside in Foxborough and will be pursu-ing a postsecondary education. The students are selected based on their ability to demonstrate a dedication to community service and embody the core principles and values of the Kraft Group: good character, high integrity, respect to others, a willingness to take owner-ship and be active in their community.

Since its inception, the PIP Fund has been a philanthropic partnership be-tween the Kraft family, the Kraft Group and Foxborough residents.

A group of 13 residents selected by

the Kraft Group serve 3-year terms on the Fund’s Grants Committee to review grant applications and recommend al-location of the Fund’s $100,000 annual investment into the community. The Fund’s Board of Directors, comprised of five members of the Kraft Group, review the Grants Committee’s recommenda-tions to determine where the funds should be donated in Town.

In 2019, the PIP Fund welcomes five new members to its Grants Commit-tee with the appointments of Jessica James, Chris McNamara, Matt Mona-han, Katie Storer and Marcia White-house. These five new members replace outgoing members Livia Binks, Michelle

Amos Morse House Available to be Moved for Preservation

The Kraft Group filed a demoli-tion permit with the Town for the Amos Morse House at 77 North St. because the house has become structurally unsafe and a hazard to the public.

The Town’s Historical Com-mission has deemed the house historically significant and placed a 6-month demolition delay on the house so that both parties can con-tinue to work together on exploring

alternatives to a demolition. The Kraft Group remains com-

mitted to working with the Historical Commission to find a satisfactory solution for the Amos Morse House - one that can preserve the history of the house while appropriately addressing the failing structure and safety concerns.

As one alternative, the Kraft Group is offering the house as a gift to anyone willing and able to move the house and restore it elsewhere (preferably in Foxborough to preserve its history within the Town). If you are interested in the house, please email [email protected]. The Kraft Group currently has no plans for development of the property.

PIP Fund Awards $19,000 to Ahern STEM Program

Foxborough Public Schools has set out to actively cultivate student interest in computer science, en-gineering, and biomedical science through a new program endorsed by the MA STEM Hub and funded entirely by the Partners in Patrio-tism Fund.

Through a PIP Fund grant of $19,159, the Ahern Middle School will implement Project Lead the Way (PLTW) to revamp the enrichment and elective offerings available to all seventh and eighth grade students. The goal of the program, according to Foxborough Schools Assistant Superintendent Alison Mello, is to engage students in learning experiences in STEM that are motivating, hands-on, civic-minded and inspire curiosity and problem-solving.

“Building student interest, capacity and awareness in these [STEM] fields is a high priority for Foxborough Public Schools as we know that the learning experi-ences will build critical problem-solving and collaboration skills that will prepare them for a variety of career opportunities available in these fields,” said Mello.

The program also incorporates a civics component into the learn-ing modules, which will help build student awareness of their ability to impact and help others.

According to Mello, the PIP Fund grant allows the school to implement four modules: Medical

Detectives, Green Architecture, Computer Science for Innova-tors and Makers and Design and Modeling.

“Without the support of the PIP Fund, we would have had to scale back the implementation signifi-cantly and offer fewer modules,” said Mello.

The Project Lead the Way program is expected to begin this summer with a full week of training for all teachers leading a module and student courses launching during the 2019-2020 school year.

SCHOOLS RECEIVE GRANT FOR ECG SCREENINGS

The PIP Fund awarded the Foxborough Public Schools with a grant of $5,250 to provide no cost ECG screenings from the Boston ECG Project to Foxborough

High School and Ahern Middle School students. The program is intended to uncover undetected cardiac conditions that may result in sudden cardiac death, or other long-term health issues.

“Foxborough had the high-est participation rate in the state to date with 361 students screened,” said Mello. “This grant helps the ECG Project in its goal of screening 10,000 students in the state by subsidizing the cost.”

Cynthia Glennon, clinical direc-tor for the Boston ECG Project, said the nonprofit organization is conducting a large academic clini-cal data study in Massachusetts with the hope that data will show a need to change state legisla-tion to include ECG screenings as part of student wellness checks in schools.

GIRL SCOUTS, SUPERHERO 5K,

PUBLIC SCHOOLS RECEIVE GRANTS

The PIP Fund donated $19,159 to Foxborough Public Schools in support of a new STEM program that will be offered to all Ahern 7th and 8th graders next year.

The Partners in Patriotism Fund recently awarded grants to the follow-ing organizations:

• Foxboro Girl Scout Troop 82350 received $500 to as-sist in implementing Phase II of their native plant and perennial garden project at the Lane Property off of North Street.

• Norfolk Advocates For Children received $1,000 to support its annual Children’s Superhero 5K. The event ben-efits mental health treatment and education for children and families that come to the NAC.

• Foxborough Public Schools received $1,000 to support the Safe Choices Workshop for high school seniors. The program teaches students about challenges they may face as they enter adulthood after graduation.

FHS DECA RECEIVES GRANT FOR INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE Four Foxborough High School

DECA students qualified to attend the DECA International Conference in April at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.

The PIP Fund donated $1,900 to assist the students in attending this year’s conference. Since 2014, the PIP Fund has donated $20,400 to Foxborough High School’s DECA program to help

FHS students prepare as emerg-ing leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in schools and colleges across the globe.

in the neighborhood. Beyond that, Gronk became as

much of a star off of the field as he was on it through his willing-ness to actively make a difference in the community. His compas-sion was especially evident in Foxborough.

Always generous with his time, Gronk often gave back to his adopted hometown.

He stole the show at a check presentation for a community playground at the Igo Elementary

School in 2014 and enthusiasti-cally followed up the presentation by leading a Play 60 clinic with sev-eral teammates for a gym full of students and

Foxborough senior citizens. Months after the Patriots

won Super Bowl XLIX in 2015, Gronk took the team’s fourth Lombardi Trophy on a town-wide

tour, crashing as-semblies at each of Foxborough’s five public schools and encourag-ing students and faculty to show off their best touch-

down dances and Gronk spikes. In 2016, a week before players

reported to training camp, Gronk visited the Hockomock YMCA’s summer sports camp at the Invensys Foxboro branch with several teammates to lead a Play 60 football clinic for more than 60 local kids.

Just prior to kicking off the 2016 season, Gronk received the Ron Burton Community Service

Award, which is presented annu-ally to a Patriots player in recogni-tion of his many contributions in and outstanding commitment to

the community. Three months later, Gronk and

Tom Brady surprised a group of breast cancer survivors and patients at Gillette Stadium,

including Foxborough resident Tricia Conlon, with a visit on the stadium field dur-ing the Patriots annual Day of Pampering.

In 2017, Gronk, dressed as Fran-kenstein and made a Foxborough boy’s day as the Patriots star mingled with Logan Minassian at the team’s Halloween Party for pediatric cancer patients and

their families inside Gillette Stadium.

In 2018, Gronk put on an apron and got

to work in the Foxborough Stop & Shop kitchen decorat-ing cakes and cupcakes with

pediatric can-cer patients from Dana-Farber.

Over the years, Gronk

found comfort in the cozy confines of Foxborough.

“It’s a nice and peaceful community with good people around,” Gronk said. “It’s great meeting people in town. They all have a big smile on their face and are always try-ing to help you out wherever you go. It’s kind of like being back home in New York.”

Football fans throughout the world will remember Gronk for his on-field domi-nance and off-field personality that spanned nearly a decade.

Patriots Nation will remem-ber him as the greatest tight end to ever play; elevating his game time and time again on the sport’s biggest stages as evidenced most recently by his fourth quarter catch in Super Bowl LIII. The 29-yard reception in double coverage, and the final catch of his Hall of Fame career, set up the game’s only touchdown (a 2-yard run by Sony Michel)

That touchdown proved to

be the game-winning score and propelled the Patriots to their sixth Super Bowl championship (Gronk’s third with the team).

In Foxborough, Gronk will be remembered as the larger-than -life superstar who was humble

and kind with a big per-sonality and an even bigger heart. Through the countless memories, he made many laugh, smile, cheer, dance and Gronk spike.

For that, we are forever grateful. Thank you, Gronk.

GRONK: A Legacy Beyond Football

After 41 years of service, and 10 years as the Foxborough Fire Chief, Roger Hatfield retired on Jan. 18.

Since joining Foxborough’s Fire Department in 2009, Chief Hatfield worked closely with The Kraft Group to provide excellent service and protection to Gillette Stadium and Patriot Place patrons and staff.

On behalf of The Kraft Group, we would like to thank Chief Hatfield for his years of exceptional service and commitment to the safety of the Town, Gillette Stadium and Patriot Place. He was a consummate professional who worked tirelessly to do his job - a characteristic we value greatly around here - and led his department to be our “First Line of Defense.”

We wish Chief Hatfield and his family the very best in his retirement and congratulate him on more than four decades of outstanding work in protecting the communities he served.

We would also like to congratu-late Michael Kelleher on his promo-tion to Fire Chief and look forward to working with him and his depart-ment in continuing to keep the community, Gillette Stadium and Patriot Place safe.

Congratulations, Chief Hatfield!

The theme of Kraft Sports + Entertainment’s fifth Patriots Season Ticket Member Forum for Foxborough residents on Feb. 28 was celebrating the team’s Super Bowl LIII victory. The crowd of more than 150 residents and guests enjoyed complimentary food and beverage inside the Patriots Hall of Fame, received Super Bowl LIII Champion hats, watched a Super Bowl LIII highlight video, participated in a Q&A with Patriots defensive line-man Deatrich Wise Jr. and had their photos taken with the Super Bowl LIII Lombardi Trophy.

stop there and we are so apprecia-tive for all who planned and partici-pated in the following:

• On Feb. 1, the Hockomock Area YMCA’s Invensys Fox-boro Branch held a Patriots Pride Rally to give the town’s younger fans an opportu-nity to wish the team well prior to Super Bowl LIII. The rally included face painting, caricatures, a goat petting area, football drills and skills, a 40-yard dash competition, arts and crafts.

• On Feb. 2, the Foxboro Jay-cees hosted its third consec-utive Rally on the Common for the community to show their Patriots Pride. The rally included music by a DJ and face painting as the Common was again decorated with Patriots-themed signs and good luck messages from residents and local business-es. Foxboro Cable Access produced a video of the Rally along with messages from

fans throughout Foxborough and shared the final product with the team the day before Super Bowl LIII.

• The Board of Selectmen designated Feb. 3 as New England Patriots Day in Fox-borough through an official citation read on the Common during the Feb. 2 rally.

Through it all, we were honored and humbled by your enthusiasm and overwhelming support of the Patriots this season. And we are incredibly proud to have been able to bring back home our sixth Lombardi Trophy and share with all of you.

We look forward to celebrating this historic championship with you at the Founders Day Parade on June 8 and cannot wait to unveil our sixth Super Bowl ban-ner in front of the best fans in the world this fall.

Thank you for making the 2018 season so memorable and reminding the rest of the sports world that Foxborough is Title Town. 11

“I was just blown away,” Schmidt recalled. “I couldn’t process it immediately, but when I realized I won tickets to Super Bowl LIII I was just so thrilled. And then to have the Patriots make it back to the Super Bowl a few weeks later; it was a dream come true.”

Matt Brightman was selected in the Patriots Super Bowl LIII Ticket Lottery for Foxborough residents who are season ticket members. Brightman was able to purchase tickets to the Super Bowl at the Gillette Stadium Ticket Office.

“It was a fantastic experience,” Brightman said. “It was definitely a Foxborough crowd in Atlanta - just like being in Gillette Stadium. And it was a fantastic game. Every play mattered.”

Added Schmidt: “The game was so intense and for the team to win the way they did - just pure joy. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
