History
Originally founded in 1962 by Wilfred Dixon as the Health Sciences Consulting Clinic, the S.B.C.C. has not only been serving the biomedical community as part of the UCLA Biomathematics department but also was the birthplace of the BMDP software, one of the first statistical “packages” and a grandfather to SAS, SPSS and their many descendants.

SBCC was the birthplace of BMDP
SBCC Clinic model
Like a medical clinic, we are your “primary care” statisticians. We cover most “routine” statistical planning and analysis issues. We also try to make a “referral” to the faculty or other specialized experts when we encounter problems that require narrow, advanced expertise.
Services providedStatistical analyses & reports (to PI) Clinical Trials preparationStudy design protocol developmentStatistical analysis plans & sample size/power calculationsAssistance with methodology section for grantsDesign and implementation of databasesModelling (with Biomathematics faculty)Workshops in statistics/methodsReport preparationManuscript and paper reviews
Areas of expertiseGeneralized linear models:(linear, logistic, Poisson, Cox regression, ANOVA)ROC‐ Sensitivity, specificity, accuracyRepeated measure analysesSurvival & competing risks (including trees) Structural equations – path analysesClassification trees & random forests (supervised learning) Cluster analysis (unsupervised learning)Survey sampling (sampling weights) Proteomics / metabolomics (PLS, OPLS‐DA) (with Yingnian Wu, Yi Yi, Jan DeLeeuw, Kym Faull)
Sample size / power calculationsPharmacokinetics (with Elliot Landaw)

SBCC Motto
Our motto “ the earlier the better”
NOT our motto “never enough time to do it right and always enough time to do it over”

When doing research, one should try to follow the advice of Mark Twain.
“Always tell the truth. This will gratify some peopleand astonish the rest”.
We can help you get closer to the truth.
