Earlier this week, I had the opportunity towelcome alumni to an open house eventannouncing the launch of our newly formedAlumni Council - an effort created by alumni,for alumni, with the goal of increasingengagement and representation of our alumnicommunity. Our Alumni Council is not the only exciting launch to announce this month - we arealso pleased to report that the NOLS Saybrook M.A. in Leadership program hasembarked on their first-ever expedition, and are currently on location in Vernal,Utah. The group returns in 10 days, and I can't wait to hear how this immersiveexperience went. More details to come in next month's newsletter.

As we push ahead toward our Spring 2019 start, I want to acknowledge the workthat our Admissions team and faculty are doing day-in and day-out to connect withand bring in a strong class of new Saybrook community members. Our grassrootsoutreach efforts have yielded 117 leads over the course of 15 events in recentweeks, including mission-aligned events such as the Idealist.org grad fairseries and the California Forum for Diversity in Graduate Education. Wehave a number of additional events lined up for the Fall and Spring.

Lastly, I am happy to announce that a new Communications Portal has beenlaunched, which hosts information on the Pasadena Relocation, archives of thismonthly newsletter, and other key communications. You can also navigate to theportal from within the Student Gateway as well as the Faculty/Staff Intranet.For students, the link is housed under the My Campus tab. Vice President for Academic Affairs SearchUpdates

A search committee for Saybrook's Vice President of Academic Affairs has beenformed, and is chaired by Drs. Nami Kim (Associate Provost) and Bob Schmitt(Chair of the Faculty Senate). Dr. Kim and Dr. Schmitt lead a cross-functionalteam which will begin screening and meeting with candidates this month.

Search Timeline

November 5th: Application period endsMid-November: Committee reviews candidates & conducts first roundinterviewsDecember: Finalists identified and invited for a final round of interviews

VPAA Position Description

The Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) assumes authority &responsibility as delegated by the President of the University and the Board ofTrustees to fulfill the mission of the institution by leading and managing allacademic units and related units of the university. The VPAA assumes the role ofChief Academic Officer and Accreditation Liaison Officer of the institution byensuring high standards of academic quality; maintaining a well-credentialedfaculty committed to excellence in instruction; overseeing program curriculums;leading accreditation, approval, and authorization activities; managing thestrategic direction of all academic units; creating and managing budgets with afocus on strong fiscal discipline; and by maintaining alignment of all academicand student affairs initiatives with the institution’s strategic plan.

The VPAA is also responsible for creating and maintaining processes thateffectively unite academic units, enrollment management services, and studentsuccess to execute on key initiatives for the institution and ensuring that theUniversity maintains regional and professional accreditation.

Saybrook UniversityDean Opens Hypnosis

Meeting with Lecture onIntegrative Healthcare

On October 10, CIMHS DeanDr. Donald Moss opened the69th annual meeting of theSociety for Clinical andExperimental Hypnosis in LasVegas, with a lecture on “ThePlace of Hypnosis in Integrative Healthcare.” Hypnosis and hypnosis-trainedprofessionals have much to offer within integrative healthcare, includingpreparation for medical procedures, pain management, and effective hypnotictreatments for many common medical and mental health disorders. Hypnosis in

Integrated/Integrative Healthcare was the theme for this year’s SCEH meeting.

Dean Moss also provided instruction in the Introductory Training in ClinicalHypnosis and in the Intermediate-level Skills Workshops during the Las Vegasmeeting. He provided training on ego strengthening approaches to hypnosis, self-hypnosis techniques, breath training, and the integration of hypnosis into clinicalpractice. Moss is currently the President of SCEH, which is an interdisciplinaryprofessional organization dedicated to promoting “excellence and progress inhypnosis research, education, and clinical practice.”

DEPARTMENT OF INTEGRATIVE WELLNESS COACHING

On September 20th, Dr. Laura Licato, adjunct faculty CIMHS department ofIWC, served as a Coach at the 2018 Talent Development Conference &Expo. A limited number of conference participants were eligible to receivecoaching through sponsorship by the International Coach Federation (ICF)Houston Chapter. Dr. Licato also was recently elected to the ICF HoustonBoard of Directors for the 2019 year, where she will serve as Co-Chair ofthe Programs and Education Committee.

CIMHS faculty, Dr. Julie Cerrato, recently completed her NationalAssociation for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA) credential. She is pleased toshare her knowledge and expertise as a Level One NAHA CertifiedAromatherapist with Saybrook’s Integrative Wellness Coaching students.

College of Social Sciences UpdatesDEPARTMENT OF HUMANISTIC & CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Stan Krippner and Saybrook alumna Darlene Viaganno taught anintroductory three day workshop on clinical hypnosis in Guangzhou, China,in October. Darlene returns in November to teach the advancedclass. Saybrook sudent Paula de Franco was served in the role of a client,

using her own experiences to respond to Stan's and Paula'ssuggestions. Stan made a side-trip to Cambodia to visit his godson, wife,and two daughters. They met when Stan and Saybrook alumnus GlennGraves visited Angkor Van some 15 years earlier.

Stan Krippner wrote a chapter for "Shamanhood," the recently publishedbook commemorating the 75th birthday of Milhaly Hoppal, distinguishedanthropologist and editor of the journal, Shaman. Stan and Milhaly havemeet at several conferences over the years, some of which involved activeshamans who discussed their work with the group.

Stanley Krippner attended the annual convention of the Society for Clinicaland Experimental Hypnosis, an organization of which he has been amember for decades. At the October meeting, the first Stanley KrippnerAward for Young Hypnosis researchers was given to Samuel Kohlenberg, aSaybrook doctoral student who is investigating the use of hypnosis topromote mindfulness.

Carol Barrett, Creativity Studies Faculty, has had poems recently acceptedin Poetry Pacific and Survivor's Review. She co-facilitated a workshop atthe Oregon Poetry Association annual meetings September 29th inEugene, OR, titled "Facing It." The workshop explored creative writingabout dementia, chronic disability and cancer, and encouraged originalpoetry about the diagnosis and treatment of major medical issues.

NOLS Expedition Launches

The NOLS Saybrook MA in Leadership launched its first outdoor leadershipexpedition in Vernal, Utah. This learning community, consisting of seven studentsand three DLM-NOLS faculty, will immerse themselves in leadership theories asthey traverse through some of the most breathtaking canoeing routes west of theMississippi. These emerging scholar practitioners will be focused on reflectionsand dialogue facilitated by our expert faculty. They will be learning by the river, atcamp fires, and as they gaze into the morning sun.

These expeditions serve to further ground the humanistic principles throughextensive scholarly discussions. The students will further define their leadershipphilosophies using inspiration from nature. They will explore team dynamics andorganizational interventions.

This expedition is one of three--canoeing, canyoneering, and backpacking--thatthis student cohort will participate in over the next year. This program has beenmade possible through the partnership between Saybrook University and NorthAmerican Outdoor Leadership School as well as the exceptional leadership anddevelopmental support provided by our dedicated faulty: Prof. Jeff McAuliffe, Dr.Ginger Charles, Dr. Mary Kay Chess, and Dr. Shari Leach. When not on theexpeditions, students are actively engaged in facilitated online learning includesreadings, dialogic analysis, and solution making.

Publishing

Joanne L. Smikle, PhD has been invited to be contributor to InFront on Post-Acute HR, a new journal being launched this November. She will have an articlein the inaugural edition and will contribute bi-monthly throughout 2019. Thepublication targets human resource leaders in the post-acute healthcarespectrum.

Student Spotlight: Katie Horton

Saybrook student, Katie Horton, is 30 years old and lives in Seattle, Washington.She is in her third semester of the Master’s in Counseling program. In Katie'swords, "I found my passion for counseling during my own transition from male tofemale through counseling and working in the transgender community."

Katie worked with support groups and one on one mentor-ship and fell in love withhelping others to find their own paths to living as the individual they identify with.This passion continued to grow from the transgender community to the LGBTcommunity and then the overall mental health community. Since she started atSaybrook university, Katie's passion has only grown and her choice to follow thispassion has only been reinforced. Katie hopes that once her journey at Saybrookis complete, she can dedicate her career to helping the mental health communityand society to have a greater understanding of the importance of thesecommunities. She believes education leads to acceptance and, in turn, leads tochange.

Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Lorna Minewiser

Lorna Minewiser, PhD is a 2001 Saybrook graduate. Her areas of focus includeMind Body Medicine and Consciousness. Her dissertation “Eliciting mentalmodels: Teacher’s images of teaching and learning,” was published in 2007 byVDM Verlag Dr. Mueller E.K.

Since graduation, she has worked as an Energy Coach and trainer and has beenan active member of the Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology’s(ACEP) Research committee since 2006. As a coach in the Veteran Stress

Research project she used Emotional Freedom Techniques to assist veteranswith PTSD. She was a co-author of “EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques)Remediates PTSD and Psychological Symptoms in Veterans: A RandomizedControlled Replication Trial” with Linda Geronilla, Lorna Minewiser, Phil Mollon,Marilyn McWilliams, & Morgan Clond published in Energy Psychology Journal,November 2016. In 2017, her case study, “Case Report: Six sessions ofEmotional Freedom Techniques remediate one veteran’s combat-related PTSD,”was published in the Journal of Medical Acupuncture. Abstracts of these andseveral other published articles can be found on her website.

In the last few years, Lorna has become more active in the ACEP HumanitarianCommittee; she has helped to develop the Resources for Resilience project,which is committed to offering Energy Psychology and Energy Medicineresources to anyone struggling with stress and trauma. She is part of the trainingteam that shared “Emotional First Aid” with over 60 First Responders and VictimAdvocates in Osceola County, Florida. Recently she shared an introduction toResources for Resilience with Veteran Women, elementary school teachers andmembers of a Trauma Informed Schools group.

Lorna also teaches and mentors Emotional Freedom Techniques students aswell as coaches and teaches clients on a variety of Energy Psychology Tools. In2013, she and her husband of 52 years relocated from North Carolina toSacramento, California and she retired her Counselor license. She loves tospend time with her family, her grand kids, and to read, learn, teach and coach.
