Rutgers Short Course Ends Seventh Annual Session

J70R the seventh consecutive year, a one-week intensive course in the principles

of turf management for golf courses and lawns, was conducted by the College of Agriculture, Rutgers University, February 18 to 22 inclusive. There was an atten-dance of 22 greenkeepers, pros, seedsmen and landscape architects, of which 14 were from New Jersey, and 8 from other states. Instruction was provided by staff members of the College Agriculture and State Agri-cultural Experiment Station, under the leadership of Howard B. Sprague, agrono-mist.

At a dinner held the evening of Febru-ary 22, which brought the course to a close, certificates of attendance were pre-sented by Prof. F. G. Helyar, director of short courses, and acting dean of the Col-lege of Agriculture.

At the Connecticut Greenkeepers' ex-hibit in the MSC Cage there were shown some "depression tee markers" made f rom telephone insulators, 30 penny spikes and concrete. Even coffee cups were used as moulds for concrete tee markers. Staples were laid across inside the concrete as reinforcement.

What these greenkeepers have done to keep their courses looking good on starva-tion budgets is marvelous. Too bad mem-bers and officials rarely appreciate this sort of work.

Use Pencil Erasure to Block Knife Switch Contacts

W I R E S ARE often quite difficult or un-handy to safely disconnect from small

knife switches, and it is frequently neces-sary and expedient to block one or both

circuits when out of use during the winter. To prevent an accidental or ignorant clos-ing of the switch, a neat little method is shown above.

Force a common lead pencil eraser tip over one or both of the blade clips; the blade then cannot be readily dropped or even forced into contact. The tips fit the clips snugly and place a safe amount of in-sulating rubber over them.

"One club in the Chicago district," re-ports Lewis Parks, secretary of the com-pany, "has found an interesting use for the colored washers. It uses one color at the tees of the out-nine and another color for the in-nine. This serves to reduce con-fusion in strangers when one green has two or more tees nearby."

GOLF REGISTER EXTENDS LINE CUTS PRICES

Pittsfield, Mass.—Heavy production re-quirements based on popular acceptance of Golf Register, the invention of General Electric engineers which registers slice, hook, distance and direction on a real golf ball inside of a few feet, have resulted in adding two new models and lowered prices. Effective at once, the Master model Golf Register has been reduced from $10, to $9.50, the Compact model from $6.75 to $6.50, and a new model, known as the Silent model, has just been announced at $5.50.

While the Silent model is noiseless ex-cept for the thud of the golf ball, its ac-curacy is not as high as the other models. The Silent model however can be used in-doors or outdoors, which is a distinctive feature of this simple yet scientifically designed practice device.
