Hosted vs. Self-Hosted
• Hosted: you upload your video file to a video hosting provider (i.e. YouTube), then, you copy a small bit of code that they furnish to you, and paste or “embed” it into your web page
• Self-Hosted: you upload the video file to your web site or a campus provided video hosting service/server

HostedAdvantages vs. Disadvantages
• Advantages• Increased exposure, popularity, searching, social media sharing • Customization of page is usually possible and easy• A “More From” link or section to other videos you uploaded• Enables you to focus on content instead of infrastructure concerns such
as storage and network speeds• Quicker, more nimble, flexible, can usually find how-to’s on the
Internet• Some form of analytics may be provided
• Disadvantages• Ads – depends on your service level agreement• Customization - depends on your service level agreement• Provider has right to shut it down (without notice)• Storage – depends on how many, how big, etc.

Self-HostedAdvantages vs. Disadvantages
• “It depends”
• Storage of video files – are there storage constraints
• Server/network considerations– Can “many” people view it simultaneously?
– Is it a dedicated service or piggy-backed on something else such as the campus LMS?
– Is it streaming or downloading?
– 24x7x365 availability?
• Local expertise & support? – Is it available? Is it needed?
• Cost – Is it free vs. a cost recovery model?
• Analytics?
