Shooting StarsIf you keep your eyes on the night

skies this month, you might just seea meteor or two. Every year, thePerseid meteor shower peaks aroundAug. 10–13. This is when Earthcrosses the orbital path of CometSwift-Tuttle, and debris from thecomet enters Earth’s upperatmosphere.

• Asteroids, planets and moonscan also be sources of spacedebris. These rocks are knownas meteoroids.

• When a meteoroid hits Earth’satmosphere, it becomesa meteor and may be travelingas fast as 130,000 mph. If theobject survives the trip and fallsto Earth’s surface, it is known asa meteorite.

• Meteorites are named for theplaces they are found, usually atown or geographic feature.

• A meteorite that is seen as itlands is called a “fall.” One that isdiscovered later is called a “find.”

• The largest meteorite ever foundin the U.S. is the Willamettemeteorite, which weighs morethan 15 tons. Although alreadyknown to native tribes in thearea, the meteorite was“discovered” by an Oregonsettler in 1902. It is nowdisplayed at the AmericanMuseum of Natural History inNew York.

• The 66-ton Hoba meteorite, found in 1920 by a farmerplowing a field in Namibia, Africa,is the largest known on Earth.Because of its weight, it has notbeen moved, and the site is nowa national monument.

“There’s nightingales calling, shooting stars falling, like

jewels in the rain.”—David Gray

Darby Development Co. Inc.Offering Bedbug-Free

Apartment Living!Bedbugs are far more common

than people realize, and the hotel andtravel industry have been hit thehardest. This is why people who travela lot are at a higher risk of having abedbug problem. Although bedbugsare common, try the following steps tohelp you avoid bedbugs whileyou travel.

Pull back linens to check for signsof bedbugs, exoskeletons andspotting.

Always look behind the headboardif possible.

Always check the dust ruffle onthe bed.

Try not to use the dresserssupplied by the hotel.

Leave all clothing in your luggageat all times.

If you can, put your luggage in the

bathroom at night. When you return home, run any

clothing through a clothes dryer for30 minutes.

Leave luggage outside the home(i.e., garage, storage building, etc.).

Inspect all belongings for any signsof bedbugs.

Cut Back on Salt, but Not Flavor

Celebrate More Herbs, Less SaltDay in August by experimenting withnew ways to season the food you eat.

A diet too high in sodium can leadto calcium deficiency and high bloodpressure, and can adversely affectkidney, stomach and brain function.

Herbs, on the other hand, havemany health benefits, includingantibacterial and antiviral properties, and many are high in B-vitamins andtrace minerals. Most herbs and spicesalso contain antioxidants.

Farmers’ markets and grocerystores often carry a variety of freshherbs. The ones you are most likely tosee include basil, parsley, cilantro, rosemary, sage and dill.

If you don’t have access to freshherbs, opt for quality dried versions.

One place to incorporate moreherbs and less salt is at the table.

Keep a shaker of herb mix handy, inaddition to or as a substitute for thesalt shaker. A blend of onion powder, cayenne, and dried basil, parsley andthyme is one option. Experiment tofind your favorite medley.

You can also cut back on sodiumwhile preparing a meal. Rosemary isoften used in Mediterranean cookingand is delicious with chicken androasted root vegetables. Cilantro’slemony acidity complements multiplecuisines, from Thai to Mexican. Aclassic Italian herb, basil is delicious insalads and sauces.
