Kindergarten

The kindergarten students are off to a good start. We will continue to teach the rituals and routines of our classrooms. It is important that all children come to school rested and ready to learn. This month we will begin teaching letters in isolation. The children will learn the letter name, sound, and words that begin with that sound. We will continue to teach 2-3 high frequency words every other week. For literature, we will begin using close reads. These are texts that we will dig deep into. There will be vocabulary words for each text that students will demonstrate understanding of in speaking and in writing. In math, we will be exploring attributes and the numbers 1-10. In science, we will begin exploring about forces (push/pull). Lets work together so our children will FALL into learning.

Grade 1

It's great to be in grade one; we're ready to learn and have some fun! We have started the year on a great start reviewing and learning the routines and procedures of the Silvia School and our classrooms. Children enjoyed playing name games and getting to know each other during the first weeks of school along with jumping right into our science, math, reading and writing curriculum. In the wonderful world of Science, we will be learning about how a scientist thinks and exploring how sound is made. In marvelous math, we will be focusing on segmenting numbers into two parts from a whole. We begin by building and breaking numbers 1-10 with counters and making connections between math pictures, number bonds, and math equations. In Reading, we will be focusing on short vowels and targeted high frequency words to begin growing strong fluent readers. We will explore stories rich in meaning while looking closely at vocabulary and story elements such as, character, setting and sequencing the plot. In Writing, we will begin to learn what good writers do as we launch the writing process. Your child will begin sharing experiences through personal narrative writing. In addition, our first grade students will be enlightened by our social curriculum Open Circle this social forum will introduce students to topics such as friendship, manners, problem solving, social dilemmas and nurturing and encouraging tolerance of others differences. We have a full year of exploring, creating, thinking, questioning, and fostering a love to learn! Join our journey through first grade it's quite the adventure!

Grade 2

Were off and running in second grade! Weve started to get into routines within the classroom and second graders are learning and understanding their expectations. In Reading, we have started off our first unit about exploration. Each story or passage we read aims to answer the question: What can we learn from exploring new places and things? We are looking at communities, space, and nature. This ties into our Science curriculum, which is starting out with plants and their needs as well as animals and their needs. Our first units phonics skills aim to review and build on first grade phonics with patterns such as consonant blends and long vowel words (VCe). In Writing, we are continuing to work on our paragraphs of the week. We have written about our favorite subject, a trip we have taken, and something we are good at doing. We will continue to form a paragraph, edit our writing, and write a final copy each and every week. In Math, we started the year exploring addition and subtraction up to 100. We are using number bonds and multiples of ten to change the given equation into one that is easier to solve. We are learning lots of new strategies to help us solve mathematical equations and word problems! Challenge your student to teach you a new strategy for solving: 57 + 5 = ______. We have now moved on and are working on measurement skills. However, our skills for adding and subtracting will be practiced both during calendar time and in our word problems!

Grade 3

Welcome back! Students are continuing to learn rituals and routines in the classrooms. It looks great as we enter our fourth week of the school year. We are already through our first Math Unit in Geometry! Your children should be telling you all about the attributes of shapes that they have learned. We are entering our second Math Unit on telling time, addition and subtraction, and units of measure. We also have jumped into our first book in reading, Mollys Pilgrim. This is a great story about a young girl and her struggles in a new country. We will be focusing on journal writing through Mollys eyes. We have done some social studies and learned about the Native Americans who lived in Massachusetts many years ago. Now we will be entering science with Extreme Weather! Students are so excited to start their hands-on experiences in science this year!

Grade 4

This month in English Language Arts, students will begin their first novel, Because of Winn Dixie. The focus for the month will be on learning about character. Students will learn how authors use indirect characterization to develop a character throughout the story. Students will learn how to use STEAL to help them infer character traits. Our first writing unit will focus on narrative writing. They will learn the structure of a developed fourth grade story.

Students have finished the first unit in math - place value, rounding, addition and subtraction with regrouping, and reading numbers to the millions! Also, students took the end of the unit assessment and most students demonstrated proficiency. Students who need more practice will be working with the teacher in small groups during our intervention block. Right now, your students are learning about lines, line segments, rays, perpendicular lines, parallel lines, and different angles. Ask your student to show you how to make different lines with their arms!

Grade 5

This month in English Language Arts, we will continue reading our first novel, Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. Students will work in their interactive notebooks to track the main characters (Brian) character traits using STEAL. Throughout our novel study, students will respond to various types of text-dependent questions, focusing on quoting accurately from a text and reading closely to find answers explicitly and answers that require an inference. Students are absolutely loving The Painted Essay! The Painted Essay is an engaging and interactive way to teach and learn basic essay format. We will use this format to produce text-based essays throughout the year and write our first opinion writing piece, taking evidence from two texts to support our opinion. If you ever hear your child chanting: Reds a catchy color!, Point one is yellow!, or Point two is blue! they are singing the Painted Essay song :)

We are off and running in Math and Science! We have been exploring decimals and all the operations we can do on them; multiplication, division, comparing, and even exponents! Place value understanding is key to this unit and will continue to be important as we move on to other topics this year. Group work is continuing to be essential in both math and science and students are practicing their skills to get along and share work evenly.

Science is all about matter for our first unit. We have explored solids, liquids, and gases and what goes into making phase changes. We are now going in depth to look at the seven different properties of matter. Students are doing as many hands on activities as possible and learning how to be the best scientists they can be!

5T and 5H took a field trip to our bulletin board in the hallway to admire students exemplary work. Students very own text-based essays were posted with teacher praise and constructive feedback. They will use this feedback to set individual goals and track them throughout the year. We cant wait to see the GROWTH we make in fifth grade.

GATE

4D- We will soon begin our second novel, Iggies House by Judy Blume. While reading, we will be learning about the elements of plot. Students will be responding to text dependent questions which will require them to go back into the text to find evidence to support their thinking. In math, we will continue our study of multiplication. Please make sure students are practicing their multiplication facts each night. In science, we will continue to learn about the internal/external structures of plants & animals.

5P- We are in the middle of Maniac Magee and are analyzing character traits and theme. Our performance task will be to compare and contrast two different characters and settings from our reading. We are also working to read and interpret algebraic expressions using variables, exponents, square roots, and negative numbers. We recently finished some engineering tasks including paper towers, zip line carriers, and marshmallow catapults, and we are about to begin discussions about Earth and its place in the solar system.

MUSIC

In the music room this month we have been working on getting our classroom routines in place. It has been quite a fun couple of weeks in class. In K-1 classes we have been doing lots of singing and discovering beat, not only by using our voices but using body movements to make sounds together. Grades 2-3 have been working on keeping a steady beat while using body percussion in rhyme and keeping a steady rhythm while changing together. We also got a chance to practice and perform for each other with percussion instruments in groups last week. It was very successful and lots of fun! In 4th and 5th grades, we are learning about our voices. We have been singing in unison and learned Frere Jacques in both English and in French. Most recently are learning new musical vocabulary words such as Solo and Acapella. We will be learning more about how the musical group Pentatonix makes music using just their voices and no instruments. We are looking forward to this coming month and all the music we will be learning about and making together!

ART

Welcome back artists! This month in the art room our main focus has been working through routines and expectations. We have also been talking about how artists get ideas and set up their studio spaces to make the best work! All grade levels are beginning their Square 1 Art Fundraiser artwork. Kindergarten artists are learning about their artists eyes and how to use them to see the world around them. First and second grade artists are learning the expectations of painting in the art room. Third, fourth, and fifth grade artists began the year with a collaborative Art Chopped sculpture lesson. They are now finishing up their art portfolios to hold on to the artwork throughout the year. I am looking forward to having another wonderful and creative year in the art room! Keep an eye out for more information about Square 1 Art! Remember Art Kids are Smart Kids!

P.E.

Things are moving along well in the gymnasium. Students are on board with our Silvia School dynamic warm-up routine and are getting more flexible every class. We have been working really hard at learning all of our Playworks activities so that we can take the movement we learn inside, and transfer it outside to recess. Looking ahead, students in grades K-2 are working on a unit of manipulative skills. We are trying to get better at hand-eye coordination utilizing scarves, bean-bags, and playground balls. Our 3-5 students are finishing up initial fitness testing and will be diving into the invasion sport of Rugby!

Character Trait of the Week

Each day during morning announcements, students learn about the school wide character trait of the week through short lessons, poetry, and whole class shout-outs. A list of weekly traits is posted on the school adjustment counselor webpage as well as in your childs school planner. Classroom teachers nominate one student each week for displaying exemplary behavior for the weekly character trait. These students have their name displayed outside their classroom door for all to see and are honored at an assembly at the end of each trimester. Our goal is that every child will have the opportunity to be recognized as a Silvia STAR student of the week!

Character Traits for the month of October

October 2: Following instructions

October 9: Being an active listener

October 16: Appropriately gaining teachers attention

October 23: Giving and receiving compliments

October 30: Being a good friend

Please reinforce these traits at home with your child(ren)!

We look forward to working with you this year! -Mrs. Michel & Mrs. Gilbarg
