55-57 47-50 51-54 58-80 41-46 SAVOUR THE TASTE OF WILTSHIRE In Wiltshire, food matters. Here, we create food to feed the soul. Lucky, then, that life here moves at a gentler pace. Giving you time to relish the culinary magic conjured up by our chefs, bakers and brewers. If you want to while away the hours over a long lunch or dinner with family and friends, that’s fine with us. No hurry. It’ll be ready in a Wiltshire minute. Our pedigree is second to none Back in 18th century Calne, the Harris family invented the traditional English technique of curing bacon and ham. In time, this became known as the ‘Wiltshire Cure’ and is now recognised countrywide. Many other Wiltshire specialities have been handed down the generations, remaining as tasty as ever today. So look out for local delicacies such as Wiltshire Lardy Cake, Malmesbury Pudding and Wiltshire Loaf. (That last one’s a cheese, by the way, not a type of bread!) What’s on the menu? Start the day by tucking into a hearty Wiltshire breakfast. Bacon, of course. Home-made bread, perhaps. Locally sourced jams and preserves. And eggs collected fresh from the hens that morning. Time for a cuppa Later on, if you’ve worked up an appetite again thanks to a busy day’s sightseeing, why not take a break? You’ll find coffee shops for your favourite latte, cappuccino or espresso. Tea rooms for mouth-watering cakes and pastries. And dairies serving ice cream made on site using milk from the farm’s own cows. Linger over elevenses. Treat yourself to afternoon tea. Or enjoy a scoop or two of your favourite flavour whilst taking in the view. Friendly watering holes Wiltshire also has an abundance of characterful inns. Town pubs and country pubs. Pubs with gardens and pubs with ghosts. Walkers, cyclists, children, dogs… all are widely welcomed. Plenty to whet your appetite At restaurants across the county, menus change with the seasons. Timeless classics and new favourites are crafted with equal care and attention. Every day. If you really want to push the boat out, many have been awarded AA Dining Rosettes. While a select few are the proud holders of a coveted Michelin star (or two!). LOCAL FOOD FROM LOCAL PRODUCERSQuality… provenance… food miles… If you’re as passionate about these as we are, then head for one of our farm shops. Here you’ll find meat, traditionally butchered and hung. Fresh fruit and vegetables. Honey, jams, pickles and preserves. Homemade cakes, pies and pastries. Dairy products and a wide range of cheeses. Either grown on site or sourced from artisan makers close by.

Raise your glass! If you fancy sampling a home-grown pint or two, keep an eye out for craft beers and ales from our outstanding Wiltshire breweries. You’ll find excellent local wines, ciders and apple juice too. Not to mention top notch vodka and gin. Tours and tastings are often available, so take the chance to hear more about the history and methods of production. Then try the finished product in the place where it was made.

Cook up a stormIf you’d like to learn how to make the most of all this wonderful produce, our cookery schools will be only too pleased to share their knowledge and expertise. Courses, clubs or cook and dine evenings. Half or full days. For adults or children. Hone your skills or master new techniques – with tuition from expert chefs you’ll leave with everything you need to liven up your family meals or design the perfect dinner party.

To market, to marketFor hustle and bustle you can’t beat a good market, and Wiltshire has markets in abundance. Indoor, outdoor and farmers’ markets… continental and Christmas markets… artisan and foodie markets. What could be better than an hour or two spent browsing the many stalls where tempting displays showcase seasonal fruit and vegetables, meat, poultry and game, cheeses, free range eggs, artisan loaves and more. Top prize for the longest running market goes to Trowbridge, where stallholders have been trading since the year 1200. Hot on its heels, history-wise, is Salisbury’s Charter Market, which has been coming to the city for almost 800 years.

And there are plenty more to choose from – go to visitwiltshire.co.uk/markets for up-to-date details.
