One of the most effective ways to end animal homelessness is to prevent the birth of unwanted animals This recognition became a mission of P.A.W.S. of Michigan in 2011. The seed was planted when three board members; Karin Pigott, Eve Howell, and Kris Jordan went to a conference in Chicago in August of 2007 called "The Fix-It Forum," sponsored by PetSmart Charities.  Humane Alliance presented their program on helping organizations open high-quality, low-cost spay/neuter clinics. The ladies thought it was a wonderful idea and made a presentation to the board of P.A.W.S. who voted to pursue it, apply to the Humane Alliance program and were accepted. They then spent the next 2 or so years raising the start-up money. This endeavor was capped by two significant sources of funding; winning $50,000 in the Pepsi Refresh challenge in 2010 and a grant for approximately $90,000 from PetSmart charities for equipment and initial inventory.!The PAWS Clinic opened on September 19, 2011. The first board members were Karin Pigott, Chrissy Romano-McGill, and Kris Jordan. Terra Muscat was also very involved in helping to get things going. !!

P.A.W.S. of Michigan !Precious Animal Welfare Society !P. O. Box 2184 !Riverview, Michigan 48193 !End of Year 2015

  • The amazingly talented surgical staff consists of Dr. Laura Mather, Dr. Kevin Corr and Dr. Yvonne Provci This year, through November 30, they’ve averaged 583 surgeries per month, or around 145 per week. The clinic does surgery four days a week, about 36 surgeries average per day. Over 21% of the surgeries done in that period have been ferals. They are aided by loyal volunteers; Linda Lee, Corky Bellew and Lana and Jerry Golden.

!Dr. Corr hard at work !The PAWS Clinc performed its 25,000 surgery the day it celebrated its fourth anniversary. The current board: President Wayne Kosowski, Secretary Jeaanette Bartlett, Treasurer Donna Follbaum, Directors-at-large Tim Durand, Mike Hurley, Cristy Smith, and Kris Jordan has a hefty plan for the future. The ultimate goal is to double the space and surgical capacity by expanding into the two vacant suites immediately adjacent to the current suite. Architectural drawings are completed and they’re currently getting

bids for the work. The hope is to start work as soon as possible after the first of the year and occupy the new space by early summer at the latest, though that's up in the air right now. Donations are needed since it is going to be expensive!!

Clinic Executive Director, Kris Jordan, goes over the expansion blueprints with the contractors !!The PAWS Clinic staff is unbelievably talented and thoroughly committed to the mission of ending animal homelessness and euthanasia by providing high-quality, affordable spay/neuter services to our community. The staff includes current PAWS members Gina Angellotti, Stephanie Doran, Kris Jordan, Diana Lenaway, and Terra Muscat !The PAWS V-SNAP program has subsidized 816 clinic spay/neuter surgeries to-date for people on government assistance. These are people who may not have been able to get their pets spayed or neutered otherwise. Before opening The PAWS Clinic, the V-SNAP fund paid for !!

  • numerous surgeries at Humane Ohio and All About Animals.

!!Post surgical puppy, Holand, from Dearborn Animal Shelter (held by Amber Bifulco

!Pre surgical kitten, Oriole, from Dearborn Animal Shelter (held by Terra Muscat) !

In the last 2 years, PAWS has helped fund over 700 feral cat surgeries at the clinic through our member feral program, National Feral Cat Day program, and grants. !!Dollars for Dogs!Donation Only Garage Sale for P.A.W.S. of Michigan With a Donation to the War Dog Memorial

!A donation only garage sale was held by Lisa Lesley, P.A.W.S. board member and newsletter editor, in October. Originally scheduled for one day, it became a two day event due to cold rainy weather which

    !!

  • resulted in people making donations without taking items!! Much of the merchandise was later donated, but, over $800.00 was raised. Many thanks to family and volunteers for their endless help: Doug Lesley, Laraine Lesley, Brenda Tomblin Monguagon Chapter NSDAR Treasurer, Diane Desrosiers Vice President P.A.W.S. of Michigan and Christine Proudlock P.A.W.S. of Michigan foster. !Lisa is also Vice Regent of the Monguagon Chapter of the Daughters of the Revolution and requested P.A.W.S. make a donation to the War Dog Memorial in South Lyon, Michgan. Children of the American Revolution are raising funds to improve this testament to our animal heroes. Read more about the memorial on their website: www.mwdm.org.

! Happy Tails !Emails to dog co-coordinators; Velda Bohler and Diane Desrosiers Hi Velda, Just thought you'd enjoy an update on Brandy. This was her first snowfall with us and she had a really wonderful time running free in all the deep snow. She stays on her property now with no problem. It took a few months of close scrutiny but it worked out and now she actually comes to check up on us to make sure we're close by. She has brought us so much joy and happiness and has really helped fill the void that loosing Tess left. She has given Max a new outlook on life, too. He's been more active and playful and really enjoys Brandy's company. I can't thank you enough for such a wonderful little dog and for trusting us with her even though we didn't have a fenced in yard as so many rescue groups
