Conclusions so far.
For the month of February I have clearly saved a goodly amount of gas - probably around 20%. The reason for this is that I am able to turn the radiators down using the timer capability in the evening period when we have a open fire in the living room. I believe the eTRVs are much more responsive to room temperature changes and have much less hysteresis than the old mechanical TRVs. I had a similar issue with the thermostat on my hot water tank until I installed an electronic version. I have found them more convenient for turning radiators off sporadically as temperatures increase as spring comes. Am I convinced they have benefits? Yes.

“The eTRV addresses a key issue for Higher Education establishments. It is well known that electrically heated halls of residences perform much better on energy consumption than
wet heated halls. This is due to distribution losses and controllability. Students generally do not pay directly for energy consumed so there is no incentive to limit their
heating. Traditional radiator with TRV systems are set at the highest level on the first day of occupation and left that way all
year. Electric panel heaters have for some time been offered with run-on timers that provide background heating and a
manual boost for when the conditions require it and the student is actually there. The eTRV replicates this and with the addition of its internal time clock allows for a night setback that further
saves energy. The University of Bristol wishes to provide a comfortable environment at the lowest carbon impact and the
combination of gas fired heating and the controllability afforded by the eTRV we hope proves to be a winning
combination.”
