Target Audience: This workshop should be of interest to physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, social workers, students, fellows and health educators, community members, and civic and governmental leaders.
Program Chair: Lovell A. Jones, Ph.D.
The goal of the workshop is to provide a comprehensive approach to the issue of health disparities. In addition, to also provide the attendee with a broad base of knowledge related to a bio-psychosocial approach in addressing health disparities.
Educational Objectives:• Acquire introductory knowledge and
experience related to various determinants of populations’ health
• Examine and gain an understanding of the latest findings of specific research that demonstrate wide disparities in the treatment and control of chronic disease among certain populations
• Demonstrate awareness of factors that currently contribute to the prevention and control of chronic disease and factors that contribute to the wide disparities in health among certain populations
• Identify the role of various health professionals in eliminating chronic diseases as they impact and contribute to health disparities
• Introduce community and state-level resources that are ready for mobilization for funding to reduce chronic disease and health disparities.
Academic Credit OfferedAcademic credit will be provided to HDEART member students (TSU, UH, Rice, etc.) registering for a Special Topic Elective (pending approval from their departmental faculty advisor). Upon completion of the six-day workshop and individual institutional requirements, 3:00 academic units will be awarded.
