Welcome to 2018! The New Year is here and Lubbock Meals on Wheels is looking forward to a fantastic 2018. We hope to meet many

goals this year but the main ones are to finish our massive expansion and renovation project and to feed more people in our community. The construction is on schedule to be completed in the next few months, but in order to serve more people we will need your help! Shortly before the holidays we added a new route, the first new route we have been able to add in several years due to our lack of space. All of our routes continue to be extremely full and the need for our services continues to grow, so adding additional routes is eminent. We know that once the building is complete we will have the room we

need to accommodate new routes. What we will still need, though, are the volunteers to deliver those new routes. This is where you can make a difference! For each route we add, we need five volunteers to deliver it – one for each day of the week. If you have always wanted to get involved, make this the year to do so. It only takes about one hour to deliver a route and you can go as often or as little as you are available. You can do the same route every time or you can substitute on different routes. You can go every day, or once a week, once a month, or once a quarter – any amount of help is needed and appreciated. All volunteers are required to attend a one hour training and complete a background check. All of the necessary volunteer forms are on our website (lubbockmealsonwheels.org). So make 2018 the year you make a difference to those who are homebound, elderly, or disabled. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Community Christian Church’s

Please join us in wishing Ms. Vinnie a very happy 100th birthday! She credits her longevity to “the Lord.” She lives independently, still vacuums and picks up, attends community events, and spreads joy wherever she goes. We are so glad that she let’s us offer a bit of support.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Ms. Vinnie!

Mardi Gras 2018 will include over 35 food booths (with selections from your favorite local restaurants), live music by Element – Lubbock’s very own ‘Funk’ band, a large silent auction, and cash bars. We will be at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center Exhibit Hall. In addition to live music and fabulous food, there will be children’s activities, table side entertainers, a benefit drawing, and traditional Mardi Gras beads. There will be lots of decorations in the official colors of purple (for justice), green (for faith), and gold (for power). Kiddos will enjoy the Children’s Area featuring bouncers, face and hair painting, and many other activities. There is no additional charge for activities in the children’s area.

Mardi Gras (or Fat Tuesday) is the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season. It also marks the end of the Carnival season which begins on the day of the Epiphany,

January 6th. This year, our Mardi Gras celebration will be held two weeks after the actual Fat Tuesday. Our King and Queen, Ron Roberts and Lauren Matter, will reign over the event in true regal fashion.

Tickets are $40 for adults, ($45 at the door), $10 for children 17 and under. You can purchase your tickets online at lubbockmealsonwheels.org, or at Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ office. We accept cash, check, or credit cards (not American Express please). Give us a call and we will be happy to mail your tickets to you. Event tickets may also be purchased at any Select-A-Seat location (service charge applies) and at the door for an additional $5.00. If you are unable to attend, but wish to support this particular event, call our office at 806-792-7971 and ask for Lisa or Mary.

Benefit Drawing Tickets featuring Southwest Airlines tickets are available now. At just $10/ticket, purchase several! We offer several levels of sponsorship for businesses and offer some excellent benefits such as complimentary tickets, reserved tables, and advertising. For more information, go to lubbockmealsonwheels.org or call Lubbock Meals on Wheels at (806)792-7971.

We hope you join us for a fun evening of great food and fantastic entertainment at Mardi Gras, 2018. Gather your krewe and get your tickets early. All proceeds stay local and benefit Lubbock Meals on Wheels.

Be sure to stop by the Kristin + Camera photo booth for some fun photos with your friends and family!

Did you know…the first Mardi Gras celebration in the U. S. was NOT held in \New Orleans, LA? The first U. S. Mardi Gras was in 1703 in Mobile, AL!

THANK YOU TO THE MANY RESTAURANTS WHO ARE GRACIOUSLY

PARTICIPATING IN THIS EVENT: (TO DATE)

This Thanksgiving, the Salvation Army of Lubbock partnered with LMOW to bring a hot meal and a visit to more than 200 of our recipients who would otherwise have been alone. The Salvation Army prepared and packaged Thanksgiving meals and coordinated local volunteers to deliver them. This was the first year for such a program here in our community. We are thankful that the Salvation Army wants to partner again next year and try to serve even more of those who would otherwise be alone for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Senior Food Box DeliveryIn December, we sent out almost 400

Senior Food Boxes!!! Many thanks to the South Plains Food Bank for packing and

providing these special boxes filled with easy to prepare food intended for people that are

unable to cook a full meal for themselves. These boxes were heavy and took some extra volunteers who helped deliver to our folks.

Bonjour, Servus, ShalomAll of these words can be used for both goodbye and hello, so they are perfect

for our 2017/2018 board announcements!

* Betty Bell (67), Eligibility Specialist, Since 10/16/17How did you get involved with LMOW? I saw an article in the paper in the fall of 2007 that MOW was in need of volunteers. I had recently retired from a second job and thought this would be a great way to use some of my time. Also, we had made the decision to homeschool our daughter and I thought she would benefit from this activity as well.

Do you have any kids and/or pets? I have a daughter, Zoe, who is 23. We have a dog, Mack, a West Highland White Terrier, completely devoted to Zoe; and three cats, not devoted to anyone

What is your favorite thing about being a nonprofit professional? The spirit of the people I get to work with is amazing. They are focused on helping those in the community who are some of the most vulnerable and I really enjoy being part of that. And most of them are pretty sassy, which makes it fun every day

Who do you find inspirational? Too many people to name: my husband, who finds something interesting in almost everything and everyone; my church family, many of whom deal with struggles every day I can only guess at.

You are a new addition to a crayon box. What color are you and why? Yellow! It’s bright, always sunny, goes with just about every other color, but has its own personality that stands out no matter what color it’s with.

What can you simply not resist? Roberta’s fudge!

You’ve found a penguin in your freezer. What will you do with your new penguin? Convince it that our house is ill-equipped to accommodate it and send it home!

What would I find in your refrigerator right now? Fruit, yogurt, leftovers

What is your middle name? Jane

What is the number one dish that you absolutely won’t eat? Liver!

With your help, Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ Pet Program is currently helping our recipients care for 140 dogs and 85 cats. We are currently sending out approximately 1,600 pounds of kibble each month. Your generous donations specifically to this special program help pets and their people stay together.

Protect your pup in the winter months:• Your dog’s skin gets dry in the winter, just like

yours does. Consider adding a supplement to their food to protect their skin and coat. Check with your veterinary professional for safe results.

• Dogs can dehydrate just as quickly in winter as summer. Although many dogs eat snow, it’s not an adequate substitute for fresh water. If your dog spends time outdoors in your yard, make sure she has access to a water bowl, check it often and break ice that forms on top.

• Dogs will often seek heat during cold winter weather by snuggling too close to heating sources. Avoid space heaters and install baseboard radiator covers to avoid your pet getting burned. Fireplaces also pose a major threat so please make sure you have a pet proof system to keep your heat-seeking pal out of harm’s way!

Care for your cat during the cold season:• If your kitty normally sleeps on the floor,

consider moving his/her bed somewhere higher to avoid drafts.

• Open curtains during the day to let the sun come in and move furniture so your cat can take advantage of the warmth.

• If your cat lives outdoor, make sure he/she has insulated shelter. Also make sure that the opening is turned away from any strong wind.

How Can You Help Our Furry Friends?Next time you have a birthday party, consider asking for donations to the LMOW pet program instead of gifts! It’s a great way to cut down on excess ‘stuff’ while promoting a cause about which you are passionate.

The 26th annual “Feed a Friend-It’s as Easy as Pie” fundraiser wrapped up on November 18, 2017. With the help of the Lubbock community, we raised over $83,000, which is record breaking This translates to one-month of meals, helping people remain at home, well fed, and independent. As always, this takes a team effort. We send our thanks to United Supermarkets, KLBK, KAMC, and Mrs. Smith’s for hosting our fundraiser and donating pies. Congratulations to Jon Hansen – KLBK, and Tim McCullar – store director for United at 4th & Milwaukee, winners of the 26th annual pie eating contest. We appreciate all of our other pie eating participants: Chris Edwards, and Allen Smith – United Supermarkets, Brittany Escobar – KLBK, Lauren Matter and Ron Roberts – KAMC, Kenny Maines – Entertainer, and Mudflap – KLLL. Latrelle Joy, City Councilwoman District #6 kept everyone in line while judging this fierce competition. The pie eating contest ended with the first ever tie between Jon Hansen and Tim McCullar. A big shout out to Allen Smith & staff at United on 50th & Indiana for having the largest increase in donations from 2016. We appreciate the media, our volunteers, store checkers, and donors who generously support this event. Many thanks to Genia Davis, our ‘pie angel’.

and other donations or supported us through the purchase of pecans, quiche, Christmas tributes, or engraved plates or bricks - please know that your gifts made a significant

difference in the lives of the homebound, elderly, and disabled right here in our community.

On behalf of Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ Board

of Directors, staff, and recipients, thank you

for your commitment and support.

BRING YOUR ALUMINUM CANS TO LUBBOCK MEALS ON WHEELS! Regular trips are made to recycle these materials, and the money received provides

funds for our programs. You can help the environment and Lubbock Meals on Wheels by bringing your aluminum cans to 2304 34th Street during office hours,

Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Special thanks to Jarvis Metals Recycling, Inc. for providing a trailer for our program.

You CAN Help!

LMOW has an answer to that age old question, “What’s for dinner?” Monday – Friday from 8:00am – 4:30pm you can come by our office and pick up a house made quiche for your evening meal. It goes straight from the freezer to the oven. We have seven varieties to choose from: Green Chili Chicken, Chicken & Broccoli, Ham & Cheese, Italian Sausage, Spinach & Bacon, Spinach & Mushroom (vegetarian), and Mexicana (vegetarian). Quiches are $14.50 for one/two for $28.00 (plus tax). With your “frequent quiche card” you buy 10 and get one free!

For more information or to place a large order, simply call 806-792-7971.

Have you tried our House made Quiche Yet?

Step Up to the PlateConsider purchasing a LMOW Lunch Plate to hang in our new volunteer center to show your support of Lubbock Meals on Wheels.

Donors can have their name, business, club, organization, Sunday School class, etc. engraved on a lunch plate that will be mounted prominently on the donor wall. Honoring a loved one, friend, or pet is also an option for these special plates.

The 9-inch, round plates symbolize the lunches we prepare and deliver to people in our community, helping them remain at home, well fed, and independent. Each plate can contain a total of four lines with 20 characters per line. For a donation of $250 per plate

you can be sure to get your message in our new volunteer center. With construction scheduled to be completed in mid 2018, please take this unique opportunity to secure one of these lunch plates, making sure that yours will be included in the new facility.

ORDER FORMS ARE AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE, LUBBOCKMEALSONWHEELS.ORG (UNDER THE DONATION TAB) AND AT OUR OFFICE.
