: Best of Friends Awardee

I n 2008, i left taller San Jose in Shawna Smith’s capable hands, so that the organization could continue to grow and flourish. Just recently, i was elected assistant general Superior of the Sisters of St. Joseph of orange. i will serve on the general Council for the next five years, working to make certain that the mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph is strong and thriving wherever we are.

this new role will take me around the state, and even across the country, but, my heart will never be far from taller San Jose.

i founded taller San Jose 15 years ago after witnessing countless stories of young men and women braving the battles of poverty, and coming out wounded. today, these stories continue – and to ensure that taller San Jose can continue to provide job training, case management, and employment services to more than 200 youth annually, we have set up a permanently endowed fund at the orange Catholic Foundation.

we have a short term goal of $100,000 over the next three years to jumpstart this fund. those who contribute will be a part of our Sister eileen legacy Society, which also includes those who have left taller San Jose in their living will or trust.

Sister eileen Mcnerney , Founder and President emerita

For more information on the Sister eileen Legacy Society, please call (714) 543-5105 ext. 112.

Dear Friends,

For 15 years, young men and women, like Jordan (see page 1), have come to Taller San Jose looking for a place to deposit their hope. It’s typically a little beaten up, tattered and bruised, sometimes barely visible. I think of their first few weeks at Taller San Jose as Hope CPR. Through the development of new skills, new values like responsibility, and lots of love and support, we breathe new life into their battered hope. What emerges is a second chance at life, a new life, a life restored. As Jordan said so well,

“Today, I’m a better person in so many ways.”

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned during my thirteen years at Taller San Jose is that hope realized revives us all. Taller San Jose’s focused efforts to offer hope, teach responsibility, and build futures for troubled young lives still compels me in a powerful way. I’m grateful that it moves so many of you, too.

TEACHING RESPONSIBILITY BUILDING FUTURES

Gratefully,

Shawna, CEO/Executive Director

Social enterprise…then and now

who we Serve…then and now

When taller San Jose first opened its doors, young men and women came to earn their high school diploma and learn how

to build benches. Students spent many months becoming skilled craftsmen and learning the dignity of a hard day’s work (a core value that taller San Jose still teaches today.)

over time, taller San Jose became more familiar with the construction industry – and the needs of its students – and launched its construction training program. the program taught hands-on construction skills, and was just 16 weeks long in order to quickly move students into the workforce. it also strengthened its life skills workshops and support services to help students reduce their barriers to employment. the program was a great success, and served as a model for launching taller San Jose’s office and medical training programs, too.

Taller San Jose’s training programs and social enterprises have evolved over the years; however, the young man and women that taller San Jose

serves continue to walk through our doors with the same wounds. they are undereducated and lack basic skills. Some are single parents, while others have criminal records.

with more than 15 years or experience working with this population, taller San Jose has seen that despite these barriers, its students are eager to seize the opportunity to learn and grow. Since 1995, Taller San Jose has walked more than 4,500 young adults out of poverty through job training that leads to living wage employment.

Taller San Jose learned early on the importance of building long-term sustainability and impacting its ability to grow. in 1997 taller

San Jose opened an entrepreneurial venture, “the Benchmakers”, which hired students to craft and carve unique garden benches for sale to home owners and businesses. over the years the

“Benchmakers” business expanded to include the design of custom cabinetry and entertainment centers.

although taller San Jose no longer makes benches, social enterprise remained a part of the organization’s strategy to sustain itself and grow; in 2007, taller San Jose launched Hope Builders, inc.

- a venture that hires taller San Jose alumni to build and rehabilitate affordable housing and provide commercial and tenant improvement services.

Hope Builders, inc. completed its first project with the construction of three homes for low-income Santa ana residents in 2009. Since then, Hope Builders, inc., has renovated facilities at three nonprofits and completed several small remodeling projects for local homeowners. Currently, Hope Builders, inc. employs a crew of 12 and is working on five job sites throughout orange and los angeles Counties. this summer, the crew will begin building two more homes for low-income residents in Santa ana. For several years, their companies have hosted builders luncheons at taller San Jose, raising sponsorships

for the light up a life gala and linking students to employment opportunities in the construction field. this year, 100 construction industry professionals attended the builders luncheon and raised more than $90,000 in light up a life sponsorships and amigo scholarships. in addition, 6 job opportunities were created.

each host took their turn on stage and encouraged their peers to support taller San Jose. “we are in a position to give these young people a second chance,” said wayne lindholm of Hensel Phelps. “and i’m inspired by the outpouring of support from the construction industry.”

in addition to hosting the annual event and sponsoring light up a life, these amigo Sponsors serve on the construction program’s advisory Board. Clark Construction, Hensel Phelps and McCarthy Construction have all hired program graduates, and David Yount of PCl Construction was a partner in Hope Builders’ first homebuilding project (see page 2.)

taller San Jose is grateful to have the ongoing support and dedication from these four amigos.

Everybody Needs an AmigoEach year, 200 young people enroll in Taller San Jose looking for a way out of their troubles. We are looking for an Amigo – a $1,000 scholarship sponsor – for each one of them. By becoming an Amigo, you will provide a student:

• 16 weeks of job training

• Life skills workshops, like money management and healthy relationships

• Weekly sessions with a case manager to sort out their personal barriers and make goals

To sponsor a $1,000 Amigo Scholarship, please call (714) 543-5105 ext. 121 or visit www.tallersanjose.org

at just 20 years old, Jordan didn’t have any hope for his future. after high school, he got wrapped up in a tough crowd and, as he puts it, dug himself “deep in a hole that seemed impossible to get out of.” then, he found taller San Jose and got to work, learning Microsoft office and business skills. He met with a case manager weekly to sort out personal barriers and received bus passes to save money. “i started to realize a change in me,” remembers Jordan. “i finally felt

encouraged.” Jordan graduated in 2010 and was hired at avrek law Firm as a scanner. He has since been promoted to worker’s Comp assistant and earns $10.00 per hour, plus benefits. “today, i’m a better person in so many ways,” says Jordan.
