MSCC Player Of The Week - 7/28 – SAURABHSAURABH VERMA (a.k.a “Itchy”, “Saroof”) is picked as the Player Of The Week for his brilliant “Unbeaten Century” against South Side in Tukwila grounds. MSCC-Greens were set a huge total of 205 runs to chase on a ‘hot’ summer day, in-walks a great cricketer with great intentions in mind, that is to save everyone from the scorching ‘heat & tiring’ weather conditions by chasing down the mammoth total in just 21 overs. Even the South Side team was “very thankful” to him to get back in the shade after having witnessed one of the “greatest & memorable” knocks ever in this league.

SAURABH walked in to replace one of the openers, when the score was 50 odd runs. He started middling the ball straight away and was soon seen dispatching it to all corners of the ground. His timing and striking ability was so good that his statistics read as follows:

55 mins, 48 balls, 11 x 6 ’s, 6 x 4’s, 2 x 2’s & 19 x 1’s

Blistering knock of 113* with an amazing striker rate (>200)

MSCC Player Of The Week - 7/28 – SAURABHSAURABH was at his best when he was called upon to bowl, South Side were going great at one point with openers scoring at will and with 100+ runs on the board. Saurabh mesmerized the batsmen with his vile and turn and put brakes on the scoring, that caused wickets to tumble from the other end. Saurabh ended up with one wicket but his effort with the ball got the Greens back in the

game – A True Fighter ! ! !“Man with golden arm, makes the ball talk. He is excellent natural cricketer and undoubtedly best spinner on his day in this country. He almost made to US team last year and this year it looks strong possibility” – Vijay Beniwal, Captain-NWCL Team

“You are still the most feared bowler in the league with the greatest ability to take wickets. Your talent and commitment to practice are such an inspiration to all of us. There is never a time when you are not up to go and play and are asking for others to join you. Your talent and energy will win many games for us in the future as they have in the past” – Mark Demos, Coach-NWCL Team

WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE TEAM SPORT? One-tup cricket

WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE TEAM? NW Moosies

WHO WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PLAYER WHEN YOU WERE GROWING

UP? I used to love watching Younis and Akram bowl in tandem. I’ve never really been able to appreciate batting the same way as bowling.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PLAY OR CONTINUE PLAYING CRICKET? I’ve never seen a Ranji/international game of cricket being played, except on TV. The bowlers don’t really look that fast on TV. Around 9th grade, I heard a commentator say Wasim was dangerous because he could move the ball both ways and I thought… what the hell, I can do that too! I had no idea you needed that pace too. I think the majority of that year I was totally convinced that since I could move the ball both ways, I’d walk into the Omani Cricket Team. That delusion gave me tons of confidence… which is sometimes all you really need to do well. The newspaper articles that used to cover our league/inter-school games were also quite popular with the ladies (this may have been another delusion). What other inspiration does a high school kid need?

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BEST MOMENT IN CRICKET? 1999. Needed 23 or so runs to complete my double hundred against our rivals (Sri Lankan school) in the last over. Got it off the last ball. The game against Texas last year in which we defended 130 was also very special. We were 16/5 I think but somehow managed 130. They were 90 for 2. We took a couple of wickets and suddenly. With 4 or so runs to win, their last batsman hoicked me to mid-wicket where Kanta caught the ball. That was an awesome win.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST THOUGHTS or EXPERIENCE STEPPING INTO NWCL LEAGUE? The first practice session I attended got rained out. I was wondering if my spin career was going to end with a soggy ball in my hand.

WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU RECEIVED FROM YOUR PARENTS? Never to fall into the “would have/could have/should have” trap. Think about what you’ll do the next time and move on.

WHAT'S THE ONE THING YOU WISH YOU COULD DO BUT CAN'T? Bowl really, really fast.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE MEAL? Aloo-pyaz ke parathe for breakfast by Mom.

WHICH TEAMMATE WOULD YOU HATE TO BE STUCK IN A LIFT

WITH? Ravi Dangerously and Chenchurett Lee. I’m allergic to cigarette smoke and they’re allergic to a lack of it.

COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE: THE BEST VACATION I HAVE BEEN ON

WAS Goa 2007. Beach shack, beach cricket and the best fish I’ve ever had.

WHAT IS YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE? Last over, ball in hand, 26 runs to win and TJ batting… oh wait.

COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE: I WOULD NEVER GO TO A GAME WITHOUT Feeling lucky that I can still play and enjoy the game as much as I do after all these years

Highest score: 203* Best Bowling Spell: 5 for 5 in 3 overs. Centuries/Half-Centuries to-date: Don’t remember. Fav team in NWCL (outside MSCC)?: LWCC. Cricket in LWCC is a

social activity in which the entire family takes part. Fav three players in NWCL (Outside MSCC)? David Hoyle for his grit.

Mark Demos for his enthusiasm. Sanjay Naik for his skill. Fav - 40 or T-20? 40 please. In T20 my spell gets over by the time I get

into rhythm. What improvements can you suggest for the MSCC mgmt: Take it

easy… we tend to get worked up over small things (when put in the bigger context of the game). Apart from that, this is the best managed club I’ve ever come across.

Your friends like you as batsman or bowler? Depends on whether I’m playing with them or against them. . Mostly my friends prefer I just keep bowling to them at the nets which suits me just fine.

Greatest or sweetest comment received: “Lord-a-Mercy!” by a West Indian batsman as the ball turned into him instead of away. This was around the time when I first started bowling leg-spin in college (after my Wasim Akram dreams had been shattered looking at West Indian fast bowlers).
