SAUDIS NOT READY TO PAYMAXIMUM SECURITY=S
CONNECTIONS
by Bill Finley
The Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia (JCSA) announced Monday
that it will continue to withhold payment from the $20-million
Saudi Cup to the connections of Maximum Security (New Year=s
Day) as it continues to investigate the circumstances
surrounding the horse and former trainer Jason Servis. While
that money is being withheld, a decision has been made to go
ahead and pay the owners who had horses finish second
through 10th in the Feb. 29 race.
Shortly after Saudi Cup, Servis was among 27 people indicted
on federal charges involving the doping of race horses. In April,
Saudi authorities announced they would withhold paying out the
purse to all connections while an investigation was ongoing. The
Saudi Cup winner is due to collect $10 million.
Monday=s announcement revealed for the first time that there
was an Aobjection to the participation@ of Maximum Security
after the race. It did not spell out who lodged the objection and
when. The JCSA said the objection and the indictments were
what led to the investigation.
It also appears that no final decision will be reached until the
case against Servis is adjudicated in the U.S. courts, as the JCSA
said their investigation has been hampered by not being a party
to the legal proceedings that are ongoing. Cont. p3
SANDIN OUT TO A FLYER WITH PICO D=OROby Jessica Martini
Gerry Sandin, who grew up near Bay Meadows Racetrack and
played Little League with future trainer Bill Morey, always knew
he wanted to own racehorses one day. The California native
finally made the dream a reality when he purchased a son of
Curlin at the OBS March 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale this year
and he was cheering the colt on from his Bay Area home when
Pico d=Oro became his first winner while breaking his maiden in
stakes company in the Runhappy Juvenile S. at Ellis Park Sunday.
AThat was my first win and it happened to be a stakes win,@
Sandin, a global operations manager for Apple, said while still
savoring the victory Monday afternoon. AIt was a pleasant
surprise--I was on a high for the second half of Sunday, it was
tough to go to sleep last night.@
Sandin traces his love of racing back some three decades to
time spent at Bay Meadows as a kid. Cont. p3

Saudis Not Ready to Pay Maxiumum
Security=s Connections (cont. from p1)
The statement read: AThat investigation remains ongoing but
has been hampered by the Covid-19 crisis and the fact that the
JCSA is not a party to the ongoing legal proceedings in the USA.
Therefore, unless and until the evidence that supports the
sealed indictment in the U.S. proceedings is placed in the public
domain, that evidence is unavailable to the JCSA=s investigation
and to any JCSA inquiry. The JCSA is bound to reach a fair and
reasonable decision on the objection and circumstances of
Maxiumum Security=s running in the race and it cannot do so
without the consideration of relevant evidence that has been
gathered by the prosecution authorities in the U.S. proceedings
in respect of the sealed indictment. Therefore, the JCSA cannot
properly conclude its investigation and any inquiry by its
Stewards= Committee cannot be commenced without
consideration of all relevant evidence, including that gathered
by the prosecution authorities in the U.S.@
That could mean that the payment of the purse will be
withheld until Servis=s case has made its way through the courts,
something that could stretch on for a couple of years.
The JCSA said it would make no further comment until the
conclusion of the investigation, which leaves a handful of
questions unanswered, including the results of drug tests
performed on Maximum Security before the race.
Sandin Out to a Flyer with Pico d=Oro(cont. from p1)
AMy uncle used to work at the front gate at Bay Meadows, so
before I was even of legal age, he would let me in,@ Sandin
recalled. AI would go watch them in the paddock, I would
handicap them, learned to read the Daily Racing Form and Andy
Beyer=s Speed Figures. The first time I was there at Bay
Meadows and saw those horses turning for home and the
thundering as they were charging down the stretch, I was
hooked.@
Sandin didn=t have to look far to find a trainer when he was
ready to buy a horse, even if he did eschew his longtime friend=s
initial advice.
ABilly Morey and I are old friends,@ Sandin said. AWe grew up
right around the corner from one another in the California Bay
area. His dad was a [CTBA] Hall of Fame trainer [William Morey,
Jr.] in Northern California. I always knew that he would follow in
his father=s footsteps in a training career. He always told me the
best way to get involved was just to buy a piece of a horse so
you could understand the operational side of this business.@

Pico d=Oro | Coady Photography
Sandin continued, AI never invested early on, but just last year
Billy made the move out to Lexington and I was ready to make
my initial investment as a solo operator.@
Of the decision to forego a partnership, Sandin explained, AI
wanted to make sure we did it the right way. As a solo operator,
you get to call all of the shots, you get to pick your races and
everything else.@
The two friends traveled to Ocala in March and purchased a
pair of juveniles, first going to $255,000 to acquire Pico d=Oro
(hip 241) and then going to $35,000 for a daughter of Malibu
Moon (hip 530) now named Luna Tigress.
By Curlin out of Michelle d=Oro (Bernardini), a daughter of
multiple Grade I winner Champagne d=Oro (Medaglia d=Oro),
Pico d=Oro was an easy choice for Sandin.
AOne of the first horses that I saw at Bay Meadows was A.P.
Indy,@ Sandin explained. AI saw him race there and I=ve always
been enamored with the A.P. Indy bloodlines. Most of the
horses that I do buy will somewhere have that bloodline in them
because I=m a huge fan. With Pico especially, the cross between
Curlin and a Bernardini mare, to me, is the best nick in the
business.@
Pico d=Oro came in slightly under Sandin=s budget at OBS, but
bidding didn=t go without some anxious moments.
APico came through the ring and I started bidding on him,@
Sandin said. AMy initial bid was $235,000 and someone got over
me at $245,000 and I went to $255,000 and the announcer is
saying, >Going once, going twice...= and then the color
commentator guy interrupts and says, >Folks, we have a son of
Curlin here, you really ought to pay more for this horse.= And I
am thinking, >What are you doing? Drop the gavel! Drop the
gavel!= My heart was beating 1,000 beats a minute. Luckily,
nobody bid further. I only had a budget of $300,000. So I had a
little more room, but not a lot.@ Cont. p5

Pico d=Oro heading to the post | Coady Photography
Following a troubled late-closing runner-up effort behind
Medicine Tail (Kantharos) in a six-furlong maiden special weight
at Ellis Park in July, Morey had picked out some potential
maiden races for Pico d=Oro=s next start, but Sandin had more
ambitious plans.
ABilly came up to me with the maiden special weight races that
were three weeks out and fit with the timing of his recovery and
when he would be ready next,@ Sandin said. AI looked at him and
I said, >OK, but what about the Ellis Juvenile? I think Pico could
have run past Medicine Tail in that race when we were blocked,
but I also think, given another furlong, it will be better for him.=
So we nominated him and then we saw how the field came up.
Nobody was overly scary to us and I thought we had a good
chance. The race seemed overloaded with speedster types and
Pico stalks and pounces. I thought it set up well for us.@
Pico d=Oro got off to a slow start in the seven-furlong Juvenile
and Sandin admitted he was initially worried his plans had gone
awry.
AWhen I saw the start, I was a little nervous because he
generally doesn=t drop that far back,@ Sandin said. ABut it was all
speed, so it was our plan to relax him early and let him finish.
When I saw that first quarter in :22 and change, I was like, >All
right, they are beating each other up up front. This is going to
work well for us.= And he slowly started to make his move going
into the turn and picking horses off one by one and towards the
end of the turn when he swung past a wall of horses, I thought
he was looking good, he was guaranteed at least second.
Medicine Tail had built a three- or four-length lead going into
the top of the stretch, but I thought as long as we could keep the
clear room on the outside, I knew Pico would keep coming. It
was a long stretch run and he really bore down there under a
little left-handed urging from Joe [Talamo] and he got him in the
last sixteenth and kept drawing away.@
Pico d=Oro could make his next start in the graded stakes ranks.
AWe are looking forward to stretching him out another
furlong,@ Sandin said. AI think we are probably going to target
the [GIII] Iroquois S. at Churchill on Derby Day for his next
appearance.@
In addition to his two OBS March purchases, Sandin also
acquired Bronze Beast (Will Take Charge) (hip 427) for $60,000
at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale.
ALuna Tigress had a chip in her knee and had to have surgery,@
Sandin said. AShe is just about to start training and hopefully she
will be ready to race in late September. Bronze Beast is just
starting training and just like Luna we are hoping to get him out
for an initial race in late September.@
Sandin doesn=t have a specific target number of horses for his
racing stable, but does plan on a long-term investment in the
sport. And he may be active at the upcoming yearling sales.
AI may end up going with Billy to the September yearling
sales,@ Sandin said. ABut we are definitely look to invest every
year at the 2-year-olds in training sales. I have had success with
the 2-year-olds with Pico, but I like buying horses based on
pedigrees more than works. For me the pedigree is what I=m
looking for. Year to year, we are going to have to take a look at
yearlings and 2-year-olds in training sales.@

FASIG-TIPTON CONSOLIDATING SARATOGA
FALL, MIDLANTIC MIXED/HORA SALES Due to current travel restrictions in place in New York State to
prevent the spread of COVID-19, officials at Fasig-Tipton have
announced that the Saratoga Fall Sale, scheduled for Oct. 20,
will not go forward as planned. It will instead be combined with
the company=s Midlantic December Mixed and Horses of Racing
Age Sale and will take place in Timonium Dec. 7 and 8.
Governor Andrew Cuomo=s New York Travel Advisory requires
any individuals that travel to New York--from any of the states
currently listed--to complete a mandatory 14-day quarantine
upon arrival in the state. There are currently 35
states/territories listed under this travel advisory, including
horse racing regions Kentucky, Florida, Maryland, Virginia, South
Carolina, California and Texas.
AThe current travel advisory requirements make it virtually
impossible for many buyers from out of state to attend an
auction in Saratoga,@ said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning.
AWe do not know what the duration or scope of the New York
Travel Advisory will be in October. Combining our Saratoga Fall
and Midlantic December sales into a two-day auction in
Maryland is the prudent and logical course of action at this point
in time.@
Entries for the main catalogue will close Sept. 18, while the
deadline for the HORA supplement is Nov. 13. Entry forms are
available at www.fasigtipton.com.
THE JOCKEY CLUB TO HOST VIRTUAL ROUND
TABLE SUNDAY The Jockey Club=s 68th annual Round Table Conference on
Matters Pertaining to Racing will be held virtually Sunday due to
the COVID-19 pandemic. The conference will discuss the need
for reform in medication rules and testing, challenges faced by
the Thoroughbred industry and insights into the claiming system
and will be streamed on The Jockey Club=s website
jockeyclub.com beginning at 10 a.m. The event will also be aired
on TVG and Racetrack Television Network platforms.
AWhile we are disappointed that we cannot host an in-person
event, we are excited by this year=s line-up of speakers and the
perspectives they will share with the conference=s virtual
attendees,@ said James L. Gagliano, president and chief
operating officer of The Jockey Club.
Gagliano will interview three-time Tour de France winner Greg
LeMond about anti-doping and the importance of clean
competition. Cont. p7

DIXIANA FARM TO SPONSOR QUEEN
ELIZABETH II CHALLENGE CUP William and Donna Shively=s Dixiana Farm is the new sponsor
for the $500,000 GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup, one of
this country=s most prestigious races for 3-year-old turf fillies.
The QE II Challenge Cup Presented by Dixiana will be held on the
second Saturday of Keeneland=s fall meet Oct. 10.
AKeeneland is pleased that Dixiana has become the sponsor of
the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup,@ Keeneland President and
CEO Bill Thomason said. ADixiana has been a valued corporate
partner through its sponsorship of other stakes at Keeneland,
and the Shivelys are enthusiastic participants in our racing and
sales. We are thrilled with Dixiana=s new association with such a
highly regarded international event as the Queen Elizabeth II
Challenge Cup.@
The Shivelys purchased Dixiana in 2004, a 700-acre breeding
and racing operation in Lexington that dates back to 1877 when
it was founded by Mayor Barack G. Thomas. He was widely
recognized as one of the first to attempt to make a living by
breeding and selling racehorses. ADixiana and Keeneland both
play an iconic role in the Bluegrass and the horse industry, and
we are natural partners in promoting the very best in

AAs longtime Keeneland race sponsors, Donna and I are very
excited about the opportunity to support this premier Grade I
event,@ Shively concluded.@
Dixiana is a previous sponsor of the GI Breeders= Futurity and
GIII Bourbon S. at Keeneland.
The Challenge Cup honors Queen Elizabeth II who attended
the races at Keeneland in 1984 and presented the trophy to the
winner of the inaugural running of the race, Cherry Valley
Farm=s Sintra (Drone).
The Keeneland Fall meet runs Oct. 2-24 and the track will host
the Breeders= Cup championships for the second time in its
history Nov. 6 and 7.
MJC EXTENDS JOCKEYS= QUARANTINE
POLICY Pending further developments in ongoing COVID-19
restrictions, officials at the Maryland Jockey Club have
announced that its existing jockey quarantine policy will remain
in place through September.
Jockeys that are currently riding out of state and come to
Maryland racetracks are required to quarantine for 14 days from
their return from another state and must produce a negative
COVID test obtained within 72 hours of riding a race in
Maryland.
Racing on the Maryland circuit continues at Laurel Park, which
will host the state=s first stakes races since the pandemic began
Sept. 5 and Labor Day, Sept. 7. The summer meet continues
through Sept. 19. There will be no racing this year at the
Maryland State Fairgrounds at Timonium. Pimlico will stage
three days of racing Oct. 1-3, featuring the final leg of this year=s
reconstituted Triple Crown, the GI Preakness S. on closing day.
STARLIGHT RACING ADDS NEW MEMBERS Corbin Blumberg, a recent graduate of the Godolphin Flying
Start program, and Elinor Wolf have been added to the staff at
Jack and Laurie Wolf=s Starlight Racing.
Prior to his Flying Start participation, Blumberg worked for his
mentor, Graham Motion, the British Horseracing Authority, the
Breeders= Cup and the Maryland Jockey Club. A graduate of the
University of Kentucky with a B.S. degree in Equine Science and
Management, Blumberg will communicate with Starlight and
StarLadies trainers at home and abroad, will attend the sales
and provide partners with an enhanced racing experience.
Elinor Wolf, the daughter of Jack and Laurie Wolf, is a recent
graduate of the University of Colorado, with a B.S. in Advertising
and Strategic Communications.
Captain of the school=s lacrosse team during her senior year,
Wolf has been freelancing for Starlight and StarLadies since the
coronavirus outbreak put an abrupt end to the season. Elinor
will oversee marketing, advertising and bloodstock related
activities for both Starlight and StarLadies Racing.
ALaurie and I are thrilled to welcome Elinor into the business
which is really just our passion,@ said Starlight Racing=s
co-managing partner Jack Wolf. AElinor has grown up in this
industry and she knows us better than anyone. We really could
not have anyone who is in a better position to share our story.
As for Corbin, he came to us as an extern from Godolphin Flying
Start and I=ve been impressed with him from day one. I think
he=ll really add value to us and our partners.@

WOODERSON TO STAND IN ARKANSAS Wooderson (Awesome Again--Lotta Kim, by Roar), a half-
brother to Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d=Oro),
will enter stud at Burdette Thoroughbred Farm in Arkansas in
2021. The deal was brokered by Chad Schumer of Schumer
Bloodstock.
Bred by Dede McGehee=s Heaven Trees Farm, Wooderson was
a $400,000 purchase out of the 2016 Keeneland September
Sale, the co-highest priced yearling for his sire in 2016. Trained
by Todd Pletcher for Let=s Go Stable, the bay was a three-time
winner from 10 starts, including a runner-up effort to future
MGISW and Horse of the Year candidate Tom=s d=Etat (Smart
Strike) in the 2019 Alydar S. at Saratoga.
A stud fee will be announced at a later date.
GOLDEN CHANCE FARM OFFERED FOR SALE Golden Chance Farm, an historic 600+ acre property in
Bourbon County, is currently being offered for sale through
Kirkpatrick & Co. The farm was home to 1970 GI Kentucky Derby
winner Dust Commander, who was campaigned by Robert and
Verna Lehmann and who began his stud career at the
Lehmanns= Golden Chance Farm. The farm was also the
birthplace of the great John Henry, as well as 1977 Derby
runner-up Run Dusty Run.
In addition to a main residence and guest house, the property
includes five barns with one-hundred stalls, a HydroHorse aqua-
tread, and six-horse Kraft hotwalker.
The farm=s neighbors include Claiborne Farm, Coolmore
America=s Creekview Farm, Godolphin=s Stonerside Farm, Stone
Farm, and Xalapa.
AKirkpatrick & Co. is deeply honored by the confidence of our
client,@ said the agency=s president and principal broker Zach
Davis, who has the listing. AIt=s always a pleasure to offer a farm
with such provenance, but because this year is the 50th
anniversary of its Derby victory, it=s doubly-special.@
The farm has been listed at $3,725,000.

(Too Much Bling) in deep stretch to score by a head.

career pinnacle came when annexing the GI Stephen Foster H.

RUSSIAN INFLUENCE (f, 2, Into Mischief--My Peg, by Fusaichi
Pegasus) displayed four modest breezes over the local strip for
this career bow and was pegged as a 19-5 proposition. Tracking
from a pocketed fourth through a :22.52 quarter, the $120,000
Keeneland January buy moved into the clear three deep at the
top of the stretch, drew alongside favored Corsidat (Soldat) a
sixteenth out despite racing on her left lead and edged past late
for a half-length score. The victress is a half to Two Last Words

COACH (f, 2, Commissioner--And Stay Out, by Exchange Rate),
made the 14-5 second choice in this unveiling, traveled in a
detached third behind a sharp :21.86 quarter, closed in four
wide approaching the lane and swept to the front inside the
eighth pole en route to 4 1/4-length graduation. Orsetto
(Bernardini) was second, while odds-on Littlestitious
(Ghostzapper) settled for third after breaking slowly and making
a mid-race move. Cont. p2

MISS CHARISMA (f, 3, Munnings--Charisma, by Eskendereya)
showed a half-dozen works at Belmont going back to mid-June
for this debut, highlighted by a half-mile gate breeze in :48 2/5
(4/15) July 25, and took a late punch to be 7-5 at the off.
Breaking several lengths last from the rail, the dark bay started
to advance past a :23.21 quarter, drew on even terms going by a
:46.78 half and took charge soon after straightening. Going clear
through mid-stretch, she began to flatten at the sixteenth pole,

GOFFS ORBY ANCHORED BYSEA THE STARS FILLY
The catalogue for the Goffs Orby Sale, which includes a Sea
The Stars (Ire) half-sister to a trio of Group 1 winners out of
Theatrical (Ire) mare Green Room (lot 176), is now online.
Numerous blue-blooded pedigrees make up the two-day sale,
with 474 yearlings set to go under the hammer on Sept. 29-30.
Sunday=s G1 Keeneland Phoenix S. winner Lucky Vega (Ire) (Lope
de Vega {Ire}) is a €175,000 graduate of the Orby Sale.
Ballylinch Stud will offer the 12th foal of the unraced Green
Room, whose 2018 Galileo (Ire) filly Espania (Ire) topped the
2019 Goffs Orby Sale at €3 million. Espania is a full-sister to G1
Investec Oaks heroine and €900,000 yearling Forever Together
(Ire); €680,000 Goffs Orby yearling and G1 Dubai Fillies Mile
heroine Together Forever (Ire); the SP Do You Love Me (Ire)Ban
€3.2 million purchase and the top lot at the 2018 Goffs Orby
Sale; and a half-sister to G1 Prix Jean Prat hero and sire Lord
Shanakill (Speightstown). Green Room has already produced the
€1.1 million Goffs Orby graduate Signe (Ire) to the cover of Sea
The Stars.
Perennial champion sire Galileo (Ire) is represented by eight
yearlings, including; The Castlebridge Consignment=s lot 237, a
son of GI E. P. Taylor S. heroine Lahaleeb (Ire) (Redback {GB}); a
filly (lot 305) out of G1 Ascot Vale S. victress Nechita (Aus)

SEPTEMBER S. Dual G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe heroine Enable (GB)
(Nathaniel {Ire}) will bypass an intended start at York and
instead run in the Sept. 5 G3 September S., according to
Juddmonte Racing Manager Teddy Grimthorpe. The Juddmonte
colourbearer had originally been under consideration for the G1
Juddmonte International S. or the G1 Yorkshire Oaks in late
August, but the Kempton 2400-metre event is now her target.
The champion is eyeing a second title in the September, held
over the all-weather, as she won it in 2018.
APrince Khalid has decided that Enable=s next start will be the
September S. [a] Group 3 at Kempton on Sept. 5,@ Grimthorpe
said in a statement. AAs has been stated, the Prix de l=Arc de

€65,000. Topping proceedings over the two-day stand was the
aforementioned Espania (Ire), who sold for €3 million to M V
Magnier/Westerberg from the draft of Ballylinch Stud. Allthough
unraced, holds an entry for the Sept. 13 G1 Moyglare Stud S.
A full preview of the Orby Sale will be conducted after the Aug.
12-13 Goffs Land Rover Sale at Kildare Paddocks with online
bidding and strict social distancing protocols in place. The Land
Rover Sale is the first sale in Ireland since the outbreak of the
COVID-19 pandemic and Goffs is working closely with Horse
Racing Ireland to ensure that the protocols in place mirror those
on Irish racecourses. Goffs is committed to delivering the best
marketplace possible given the current situation, with further
announcements in connection to the Orby Sale and Oct. 29-30
Sportsman=s Sale in the future.
AIn the first instance we want to thank the many Irish breeders
and consignors who have overwhelmingly maintained their
support of the Orby Sale with drafts of quality and depth leading
to another selection of pedigrees and physical specimens that
simply fills us with enormous pride,@ said Goffs Group Chief

Goffs Orby Yearling Sale Cont.
He added, AThese are especially challenging times and Auction
Houses are having to be more adaptable than ever in terms of
dates and locations. However, as we have demonstrated in
recent months, Arqana, Goffs and Tattersalls will consider every
option to serve the industry as best we are able, putting our
usual competitive natures to one side for the greater good. To
that end I have agreed with Edmond Mahony at Tattersalls that
we will meet following the forthcoming store sales to discuss the
autumn sales programmes of Goffs and Tattersalls, and the
options that exist.
AWith specific reference to the Orby and Sportsman=s Sales we
will continue to monitor the situation and look at any and all
options as matters evolve but we would reiterate that the
modern day Goffs was set up to provide a world class sales
facility in Ireland specifically for the Irish breeder. That said at
the same time we have a superb sales complex in the UK so we
have options to serve the industry on both sides of The Irish Sea
and will make a timely decision in the best interests of all our
valued vendors when we have weighed up the strengths and
weaknesses of each alternative against the backdrop of a
situation that is literally changing by the day. However we feel it
would be imprudent to rush in to any finite decisions beyond
this week at this stage and we would ask for calm heads
together with the continued support of our loyal clients as by
working together we can deliver the best results for the world
class Irish horses so sought after around the world.@
Enable Cont. from p1
Enable is exiting a third win in the G1 King George VI and
Queen Elizabeth S., after running second in last season=s Arc and
the July 5 G1 Coral-Eclipse S. at Sandown. If she had contested
the Juddmonte International, she would be facing Ghaiyyath
(Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who won the 10-furlong Coral-Eclipse in
good style. Arguably however, the Yorkshire Oaks would have
provided even stiffer competition, as outstanding dual English
Classic heroine Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is a certainty for that
event, having won the Oaks by an impressive nine lengths on
July 4.
Added Grimthorpe on the appeal of the Kempton feature,
AThe Kempton race worked well a couple of years ago. Obviously
the temptation of York was quite a serious one, but we=ve
always made it perfectly clear that the Arc is her main objective.
AWhoever turns up in the Yorkshire Oaks, you are going to
have a tough race--it=s a Group 1. In theory, she should have a
slightly easier task in a Group 3. Coupled with that, she=s won an
Arc off the September S.--so from that point of view, that is a
positive.@ Cont. p4

Added Grimthorpe, AReally we are just trying to give her every
chance to get to the Arc in the best possible shape. The four
weeks= timing of the Kempton race before the Arc is probably
spot on as well.@
VIRTUAL REALITY In ordinary times, this week would mark the revving up of the
European bloodstock charabanc: standing room only,
destination Deauville. As the threat of a second quarantine
hangs over visitors or returnees from France to the UK like the
Sword of Damocles, it's probably just as well that the traditional
start to the yearling season has been delayed.
This coming weekend, there will be no short shuffle between
racecourse and sales ground for the Prix Jacques Le Marois and
other delights ahead of a frenetic evening of activity in the ring
at Arqana. Instead, those of us in the UK will look on with envy
as the permitted 5,000 racegoers in the Normandy seaside town
enjoy a feast of action. Meanwhile the British government on
one hand urges people back into offices and restaurants but
bans an essentially outdoor Goodwood spectator test day at the
11th hour.
Confused? Yep, that's pretty much the mindset of the British
population right now. For our friends in Ireland, we can add
frustration to that description. No bloodstock sale has been held
on the island since February, and the 14-day mandatory
quarantine for incomers from all countries bar those on the
'Green List' means that the store sales of the coming fortnight at
Goffs and Tattersalls Ireland will be held without the usual
melJe of Irish, British and French participants. It is fair to expect
that there will be further tinkering with the yearling sales
programme ahead of its start at Doncaster on Sept. 1.
As it has been shown already through these strange times, it is
of course perfectly feasible to conduct bloodstock auctions
online and, for those forced to remain remote, to engage local
agents to do their bidding. But, just as dreaded Zoom meetings
are a poor substitute for talking to people face to face, so is it
pretty unsatisfactory for the sales to be so limited in the number
of attendees. Gone are those ringside conversations that end
with one or more people agreeing to a leg in a previously
unconsidered purchase, or that chance sighting of a horse not
on the list who just happens to catch an owner's eye as he turns
to go back in his stable.
It will work, up to a point, because it has to, and we have all
had to adapt to change in life and routines. But, as we are seeing
with crowdless racing, our sport as entertainment is so much
more than just what happens on the track. It's also the raised
glasses between races, the hubbub of banter at the pre-parade
ring and, for this particular train nerd, that feeling of
anticipation as the doors hiss closed at Ely station en route to
York for a spotless summer's day on the Knavesmire. One can
only hope that the yearning for those days is felt throughout
racing's fan base and that we can return in our droves next year,
all the more grateful for having missed out on so much in 2020.

Maystar & Hollie Doyle | Scoop Dyga
In Doyle We Trust This column makes no apologies for repeated mentions of
Hollie Doyle this season because: a) we'd love nothing more
than seeing a woman crowned champion jockey, and b) she's
great.
In the three years from when Doyle first started race-riding in
2013 she rode just six winners. Now she notches almost double
that number in a fortnight and, in the last month, she has been
rewarded with her first two group winners. The second of those
came on Saturday on the Roger Charlton-trained Extra Elusive
(GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) in the G3 Rose of Lancaster S. It
was the perfect start for her association with owner-breeder
Imad Al Sagar, for whom she was named retained jockey on
July 26.
The following day Doyle added the Listed Prix Moonlight Cloud
to her burgeoning tally of stakes wins when she guided Maystar
(Ire) (Mayson {GB}) to his first
black-type win.
Maystar's win prompted
double celebrations for trainer
Archie Watson and the
Hambleton Racing syndicate,
who also combined to win the
G3 Rathasker Stud Phoenix
Sprint S. at the Curragh with
Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}).
Watson tends to work in
tandem with Blandford
Bloodstock's Tom Biggs at the
sales and the pair picked up
Maystar at last year's Tattersalls
Ireland Goresbridge Breeze-up
Sale for i35,000. The five-time winner is entered for the
Tattersalls August Sale. Meanwhile, 6-year-old Glen Shiel, who is
closely related to Godolphin's dual Group 1 winner Farhh (GB)
(Pivotal {GB}), also joined Watson's stable last year from the
Goffs UK Spring Sale. A treble winner at up to nine furlongs for
Andre Fabre before being sold to Biggs and Watson for ,45,000,
Glen Shiel has looked more and more effective since sliding
down the distance scale and his three wins this year have all
come at six furlongs.
The past week was also tinged with sadness for another
Godolphin graduate as James McAuley's bargain buy Sceptical
(GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) suffered a fatal injury on the
gallops. The 4-year-old had been a revelation since joining Denis
Hogan's stable as an unraced 3-year-old after his purchase for
,2,800. He won four of his seven starts and finished in the first
three in the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. and G1 Darley July Cup.
A Regal Dynasty Lagrion (Diesis {GB}) may have been only a moderate
campaigner herself but she was an over-achiever at stud, her 12
foals including the Group 1 winners Dylan Thomas (Ire)
(Danehill), Queen's Logic (Ire) (Grand Lodge) and Homecoming
Queen (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}). Through one of her
daughters, Lagrion's dynasty extends to this year's Derby winner
Serpentine (Ire), a son of Galieo (Ire) and the Oaks runner-up
Remember When (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), whose exclusive
matings with the champion sire have resulted in five black-type
winners.
Queen's Logic was crowned the champion 2-year-old filly of
2001 and her exploits for Jaber Abdullah and Mick Channon led
to the move of Lagrion from the ownership of her breeder Kip
McCreery to the Coolmore team. Queen's Logic has exerted
quite an influence on York's G2 Lowther S., a race won by
herself, her daughter Lady Of The Desert (Rahy) and
granddaughter Queen Kindly
(GB) (Frankel {GB}), all of whom
raced for Abduallah.
In the last week, however, it
was the turn of the tiny 1000
Guineas winner Homecoming
Queen to increase the family's
standing when her daughter
Shale (Ire) won the G3 Frank
Conroy Silver Flash S. with
apparent ease on just her third
start. Like her three-parts-sister
Remember When, Homecoming
Queen has also been wedded to
Galileo since retiring to stud and
all four of her foals of racing age are winners, including the
Group 2-placed Berkeley Square (Ire). It would be no surprise to
see Shale enhancing the family's Classic record next year.
Family Matters There's nothing like starting the year with a promising run
from a 3-year-old. Back on Jan. 23, 2012, Bernard Benaych and
Jocelyn Targett almost certainly left Cagnes-Sur Mer delighted-
-the latter perhaps slightly over-refreshed by a pale rosJ-after
their representatives Keira (Fr) (Turtle Bowl {Ire}) and Bunny
Lebowski (Fr) (Echo Of Light {GB}) ran first and second in the
3-year-old maiden.
Fast-forward eight years and the refreshment is still flowing
freely for Targett, who indulged in some Paul Gascoigne-style
celebrations following the victory of Bunny Lebowski's daughter
Velma Valento (Fr) (Dabirsim {Fr}) in the Listed Prix du Pays
d'Auge at Clairefontaine. Cont. p6

The Weekly Wrap: Virtual Reality Cont.
The following day, there was cause for further celebration for
Benaych who co-owns Keira's son Port Guillaume (Fr) (Le Havre
{Ire}) with Claudio Marzocco and trainer Jean-Claude Rouget.
The 3-year-old colt, who started his career winning the same
newcomers' race, the Prix du Suquet, as his mother on Jan. 23 of
this year, has since progressed into a worthy Arc contender. His
sole defeat came when fifth in the Prix du Jockey Club and his
latest victory was Saturday's strike in the G2 Prix Hocquart
Longines.
The continuity of these two families will be similarly pleasing
to the trainers of Velma Valento and Port Guillaume, Christophe
Ferland and Rouget, who in each case also trained the sire and
dam of the winner.
Cup Runs Dry For Europeans Opinions are divided as to whether the increasing international
allure of the Melbourne Cup is a good thing for Australia's iconic
staying contest. Those who believe that the high number of
overseas participants in a field limited to 24 runners has
irreparably changed the profile of the race for "battlers" may
find some consolation in this woeful year that there will be
reduced competition from European stables.
With heightened coronavirus restrictions now in place in
Melbourne, it was confirmed last week that Godolphin's
Newmarket stables of Saeed Bin Suroor and Charlie Appleby will
not be sending runners to the Spring Carnival. Lloyd Williams,
who has won the Melbourne Cup six times, most recently with
the Joseph O'Brien-trained Rekindling (GB), has also stated that
"health is paramount" when it comes to considering which, if
any, of his horses currently in training with O'Brien will travel
this year.
While the OTI Racing-owned San Huberto (Ire) (Speightstown),
winner of the G2 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier in June, looks set to
make the journey from Fabrice Chappet's stable, plans are still
uncertain for his fellow resident Skyward (Fr) (Camelot {GB}).
The 4-year-old won Sunday's G3 Prix de Reux and has now
triumphed in four of his six starts, including last season's Listed
Prix Turenne. He is owned in the majority by Arrowfield Stud's
John Messara.
"He's only lightly raced and has a lot of upside," Messara's son
Paul told our sister publication TDN AusNZ. "We bought him for
the Melbourne Cup, so we'd like to go down that direction if at
all possible. We will have a discussion this week. We need to
work out what we can do with him and what options we have in
the current environment."
When Rekindling won the Cup in 2017, he led home an
Irish-trained trifecta filled by Aidan O'Brien's Johannes Vermeer
(Ire) and the Willie Mullins-trained Max Dynamite (Fr). The
following year it was won by another 3-year-old, Cross Counter
(Ire), trained by Charlie Appleby. The Hughie Morrison-trained
Marmelo (GB) was second and Prince Of Arran (Ire),
representing Charlie Fellowes, was third, delivering a clean
sweep for Britain.
In 2019, Flemington-based trainer Danny O'Brien scored a
massively popular home win with Vow And Declare (Aus)
(Declaration Of War), who narrowly held off runners trained by
Aidan and Joseph O'Brien as well as Prince Of Arran again. While
Danny O'Brien will set Vow And Declare for a return mission on
the first Tuesday of November, he also has the exciting northern
hemisphere 3-year-old Russian Camelot (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) as a
potential Cup runner. The stablemates are due to have a
jump-out at Flemington on Tuesday and could take each other
on over a mile in the G1 Makybe Diva S. on Sept. 12.

ASPETAR HOLDS HIS GROUND FOR
JUDDMONTE INTERNATIONAL
Aspetar (Fr) (Al Kazeem {GB}), who won last year=s G1 Preis
von Europa at Cologne in September, will make his next start in
the Aug. 19 G1 Juddmonte International S., trainer Roger
Charlton confirmed on Monday. After a fruitless run in the G1
Longines Hong Kong Vase in December, the gelding made his 5-
year-old bow in the Listed Gala S. at Sandown on July 5 and ran
second to Magny Cours (Medaglia d=Oro). He returned to the
winner=s circle in the G2 York S. on July 25, but Charlton is being
realistic about his charges chances.
AHe could run in the Juddmonte International, [but] I think
realistically we=re trying to get placed,@ he said. AI think there
were a few disappointments in the York S. It was a great effort
from our horse--and he won well--but he=s not going to beat the
Appleby horse [Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire})], he=s not going to
beat Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and he=s not going to beat
Kameko (Kitten=s Joy) if he turns up.
AIf we could finish third or fourth it would be great. There
aren=t many options if you win a Group 2. I looked in France, and
you have to carry a 4 1/2-pound penalty taking on horses like
Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr})B you=ve got no chance. We might as
well try and be third or fourth at York.@
DEAUVILLE BECKONS DANDALLA Group winner Dandalla (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire})=s next target
will be either the G1 Prix Morny on Aug. 23 or the G2 Prix du
Calvados the day prior, both at Deauville in France. Unbeaten in
three starts, including the G3 Albany S. at Royal Ascot on June
19 and the July 10 G2 Dutchess of Cambridge S. at Newmarket,
the Nick Bradley Racing silksbearer is trained by Karl Burke.
AShe=s in the two races, but if she goes anywhere it will be the
Morny,@ said Burke. AWe just put her in the other one in case it
looked a very weak race, or we weren=t 100% happy going to
the Morny. So it=s one or the other--she can=t do both--but we=re
very happy with her.
AHer form couldn=t look any stronger--with Nick=s other filly
Fev Rover (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}) winning since, and I believe she=ll
run in the Group 2. Even the third from Newmarket [Santosha
(Ire) (Coulsty {Ire}] has won a group race since.@
TABDEED EYES BETFAIR SPRINT CUP Tabdeed (GB) (Havana Gold {Ire})=s connections are mulling a
start for the group winner in the G1 Betfair Sprint Cup S. at
Haydock on Sept. 5. The six-furlong event would be the gelding=s
first crack at the top level. Representing the blue-and-white silks
of Sheikh Hamdan, the sparingly raced 5-year-old ran second in
a Newcastle all-weather handicap on June 27, and earned his
first group win in the G3 Hackwood S. at Newbury back on grass
on July 18.
Trainer Owen Burrows said, AWe will give him an entry in the

may as well roll the dice while he is well within himself. We
always thought he was decent.@ Cont. p8

Judicial secured a fourth stakes success in Newcastle=s June 27
G3 Chipchase S., in his penultimate start, and went postward as
the 6-4 favourite for this sharp dash coming back off a fourth in
the July 18 G3 Hackwood S. at Newbury. Settled just behind the
leaders along the rail in fourth after an alert getaway, he was
angled outside and shaken up to challenge passing the furlong
marker and powered clear in the closing stages to easily trump
last year=s winner Major Jumbo.
AHe=s amazing, he=s eight years old and probably in the best
form he=s ever been,@ said winning rider Callum Rodriguez. AWe
had a good draw, they went a nice gallop up front and I was able
to keep him balanced and keep filling him up. It was more a case
of when I went and not getting to the front too soon, but even
when I did get to the front he kept going strongly to the line.
He=s a big horse and has a great record around here, but at the
same time he can take a bit of organising so I just wanted to let
him find his feet and manoeuvre if I needed to. He was going so
well, I knew I had the horses in front of me covered and I=d have
been surprised if anything had come from behind me and picked
me up.@
Judicial, one of two pattern-race winners out of Listed Prix des

one. Nudged along rounding the home turn, the 5-2 second
choice arrived on the scene passing the eighth pole and was
pushed out late to assert by 3/4-of-a-length from Zamaani (Ire)

AHe=s a nice horse going forward and Andrew [Balding]=s
horses always improve,@ said winning rider Silvestre de Sousa.
AHe won very well first time, but we thought he would come on
for the run and he has come on. It was a really competitive little
race, it will probably bring him on again and I wouldn=t like to go
any further [in trip] at the moment. It=s sharp round here, but he
coped well and is a nice horse for the future. He=s had two runs
and I=ve not had to touch him behind the saddle, so it will be

YORKSHIRE OPEN DAY GOES VIRTUAL
The inaugural Virtual Yorkshire Open Day hosted by Racing
Welfare will be on Sept. 13. Due to COVID, the event replaces
the Middleham and Malton Open Days, which were cancelled.
The Virtual Open Day will feature racehorse trainers from across
the county providing video tours and other insights into their
training operations, as well as equine superstars and horses to
follow.
There will also be a Virtual Epsom Open Day on Aug. 31 which
will also showcase the Derby=s rich history through video tours,
interviews with trainers and racing staff based in the town.
Racing Welfare will be conducting a national online auction to
assist in fundraising efforts during the virtual open days which
will go live on Aug. 27 and end on Sept. 24. Donations made
during these events will be used to provide a full range of
support services to all of racing=s people and will aid in
developing local projects in both areas. Cont. p12

Anders as a yearling | TDN AusNZ

ANDERS LIVING UP TOMADAME'S POTENTIAL
By Bren O'Brien
The emergence of Saturday's Listed Rosebud winner Anders
(Not A Single Doubt) as a promising early-season 3-year-old
prospect is of no surprise to Paul Messara, the man who trained
his dam, Madame Andree (War Emblem {USA}).
Madame Andree never made it to the racetrack and was
retired to the Arrowfield broodmare band after two trials, but
the impression she left on Messara with her trackwork ensured
she would be given the best possible chance to produce
something to do justice to her raw talent.
"She was a horse that seemed to have unlimited ability. I had
her at the same time as I was training [three-time Group 1
winner] Ortensia, and I thought she was going to be an absolute
star. She did a couple of pieces of work with Ortensia, and she
was an absolute freak of a thing," Messara told TDN AusNZ.
"Unfortunately, she did a tendon and never made it to the track
and what she showed us prior to that was very impressive.
"When you look at the breeding record of Madame Andree
and have a quick look at the pedigree, you would think we had
massively overmated her, but the reason for that was off the
back of my opinion of her."
As a racehorse, and a broodmare prospect, Madame Andree
boasted a very interesting international pedigree. She was by G1
Kentucky Derby winner War Emblem (USA), out of an unplaced
Japanese mare, Glamour Stock (Jpn), (Sunday Silence {USA}),
who is a half-sister to four stakes winners, including champion
Canadian 2-year-old colt and Grade 1 winner Exciting Story
(USA) (Diablo {USA}).
War Emblem was famously reluctant to serve mares in his time
at Shadai Stallion Station and produced just 124 foals across his
eight seasons, but he was able to get Glamour Stock in foal
Southern Hemisphere time before she was shipped to
Arrowfield in late 2008.
"War Emblem was a pretty good stallion, but he wouldn=t
cover mares in Japan. This was one of the test mares to try and
get the stallion going Southern Hemisphere time, and as a result,
she was bred to him and came out here. That's how we ended
up with Madame Andree," Messara said.
While the filly was never able to get the job done on the track,
Madame Andree was able to produce excellent types as a
broodmare.
Progeny Shape up in Sales Ring Arrowfield retained her first two fillies by Redoute's Choice,
the dual winner Madame Pauline and the unraced Nancy Grace,
both are now broodmares themselves. The colt by Snitzel, to be
named Battleground, was a $900,000 yearling buy by James
Harron at the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Twelve months later, Anders went through the same sales ring
and was snapped up by Aquis Farm and Ciaron Maher Racing for
$670,000.
"I always thought she could be a good horse and this one
might be it," Messara said. "She's a beautiful type, albeit a bit of
a late developer, but her offspring have been very attractive
horses.@

"Anders was outstanding, an absolutely beautiful type and
outstanding in the yearling sales ring. I was trying to push one of
my friends to buy him at the time, and he's regretting that now.
I rang him on Saturday and told him there's the horse you were
supposed to buy. He was such a lovely yearling and a standout
individual."
Anders debuted at the Gold Coast back in January, finishing
sixth behind Wisdom Of Water (Headwater). He returned to
racing with a second behind the promising Peltzer (So You Think
{NZ}) at Kembla Grange in April before breaking his maiden with
a 6.6l victory at Wyong in May. He was given a spell after his
victory at Rosehill in late May and returned to the same track
first-up on Saturday, powering away to a 4.8l success for his first
stakes win. The enthusiasm the Maher and David Eustace stable
and owners Aquis have for the 3-year-old suggests he could be a
horse that graduates towards races such as the G1 Golden Rose
S. and The Everest this time in.
Another Star by Not a Single Doubt Anders became the fifth stakes winner from that current crop
of 3-year-olds by recently pensioned Arrowfield stallion Not A
Single Doubt, an amazing record from just 44 starters from that
crop.
"Not A Single Doubt has been a phenomenon and the older he
gets, the better the crops have been coming. I think we bred
them better," Messara, who is also General Manager at
Arrowfield, said. "You learn a lot about your horses and there is
no doubt we learned about him and how to breed to him, and
that has been proven by the stakes horses he has had."
Madame Andree's 2-year-old colt by Shalaa (Ire) was
purchased for $360,000 by George Moore Bloodstock and Gary
Moore Racing at this year's Magic Millions Sale, while she had a
now yearling filly by Snitzel and is in foal to another Arrowfield
stallion in Pariah. She will return to Shalaa this year.
Success Flows to France Anders' success was the start of a good weekend for his
breeders, with the Arrowfield colours carried to victory by
Skyward (Fr) (Camelot {GB}) in the G3 Prix de Reux at Deauville
on Sunday. The Fabrice Chappet-trained 4-year-old was having
his third run for 2020 and stepping to the 2500 metres for the
first time, he showed a strong kick to win under Stephane
Pasquier.
AIt was fantastic to see," Messara said. "We bought him as a
Melbourne Cup hopeful and he's bounced back really well. They
found a small issue with him and they have sorted that out and
he was back to his best.
"He's only lightly raced and has a lot of upside. We bought him
for the Melbourne Cup, so we=d like to go down that direction if
at all possible.
"We will have a discussion this week. We need to work out
what we can do with him and what options we have in the
current environment."
