Remind the students that two vowelstogether that stand for one sound arecalled a vowel pair. The sound can beshort or long, or the vowel pair canstand for a new sound. Have thestudents name some words with thevowel pair oo.

Read aloud the All-STAR ReadersKnow box on page 149 in the StudentWorkbook. Write the following wordson the board in two columns: haul,gauze, fault; fawn, hawk, paw. Readthe first column of words to thestudents and ask them what vowelsound they hear in the words (/o/).Repeat with the second column ofwords and the sound of aw (/o/).

Write each of the following sentencesand the words after them on the boardor an overhead: 1) I hear a drip fromthe ___. (fawn, faucet, fault) 2) Paulwill do the ___. English-Language Development StrategiesVowel Pairs: au, aw

Most English-language learners will have very little difficulty pronouncingthe vowel digraphs au and aw because the sound is one of the universalvowels. However, they may need extra practice recognizing the au and awspellings of the /o/ sound. Write the following sentences on the board: 1) Thefawn was on the lawn at dawn. 2) Paul will haul the auto. Read aloud thesentences to the students, and have them repeat them several times.

Osborne, Mary Pope. Dinosaursbefore Dark. Random House,Inc., 1992. Jack and his youngersister, Annie, take a trip in amagical tree house to theCretaceous period. They begin to explore and find dinosaurs,volcanoes, and danger. Read the book to the students. Discussthe story and enjoy theillustrations. Tell the students towrite a few sentences about anadventure trip they would like totake in the magical tree house.Encourage the students to usewords with the vowel digraphs auand aw in their sentences. Whenthey are finished writing, have thestudents read their sentences tothe class.
