STEWARDSHIP OF OUR TREASURE

As always, we thank you for your support of our parish, or you can go directly to the site. https://osvonlinegiving.com/4244

Stewardship offering for Feb 5 , 2017 $ 11, 521.00 Same Sunday Last Year $ 12,832.00 Thank you to our many envelope users last weekend. For our parishioners who contribute electronically, the next upcoming special collections are: February 12, 2017 Eastern Europe February 19, 2017 Diocesan Assessment 2016 Diocesan Assessment $75,779.00 Collected 2/5/17 $648.00 Raised to date: $ 11,481.00 (July 2016- now)

Every year, each Parish is assessed to contribute to the Diocese of Paterson. There is a special envelope in your packet ( 9 times per year) towards this fee the parish must pay. Our fiscal year begins July 1st. To date this year we have only collected $11,481.00. We still need to raise $64, 298.00. So you are aware; If this “Diocesan Assess-ment” amount is not raised, the balance due is taken from our general weekly collection, which we use to heat, cool , and maintain our parish.

We make a payment each month to the diocese of $9,464.00. We are well into using our General Collection.

This is where you ..our parish family comes in… If each family could donate an additional $36.00 per month or $9.00 per week in addition to your usual weekly donation, we will be able to pay this assessment and keep our col-lections for the parish needs.

This additional amount needs to be designated as “Diocesan Assessment” donations, so to properly account it. You can still use one check, just mark the envelope as to how the money should be split.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

By the early 1950s some scholars were calling for the restoration of Communion of the faithful on Good Fri-day, since by then only a priest received, consuming the host from the Holy Thursday repository. In 1955 the new Good Friday liturgy was timed to begin at three o’clock everywhere, and included the option of Holy Communion, but without the Precious Blood that had originally been part of the liturgy. Today, there is increasing debate among theologians. Some feel that it would be better to fast from the Eucharist on Good Friday, focusing on the mystery of the cross and highlighting the Easter Commun-ion. Others say that this Communion infuses the sadness of the day with awareness of Christ’s victory. It is not a day of mourning, of course, and the Passion according to John grounds the liturgy in a sense of Christ’s victory over death and the triumph of the cross. The tradition is rich and varied, and we are still in the early stages of re-covering an ancient way of doing things. Why do we call the day “good”? The English and Dutch languages share this name, and its origin stems from the name “God’s Friday.” The traditional name for the day in Latin is Feria VI in Parasceve, which translates as “The Sixth Day of the Week of Preparation.” Other languages make do with “Holy Friday.” In another part of England, as in Denmark, the people used to call it “Long Friday,” a good description for a quiet day without work and no chance for play or a good meal! —Rev. James Field, Copyright

This Week you will receive a brochure detailing the Increased Offertory Program our parish will be partic-ipating in over the next few weeks. This brochure is intended to communicate the financial needs of our parish and why we are having a dedicated focus on our parish offertory. Commitment Sunday for this Program is Feb 18 -19. We encourage our parishion-ers to spend time in prayer and discuss with your family reflecting on the parish’s needs and your cur-rent level of giving. We look forward to seeing all of our parishioners at Mass next weekend for this very important commitment Sunday. If you have any questions regarding the Increased Offertory Program please feel free to contact the Parish Office.

Coming this Lent… Do you live The Beatitudes ?

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn: for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek: for they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness: for they will be filled.

Blessed are the merciful: for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they will be called children of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great.

Come and explore the Beatitudes. Laura Curcione will be holding classes beginning on March 13, 2017 Mon-
