Make time to pray when you tell others you will
A brief shopping trip with my daughter Victoria was yet another reminder of the horrific Oct. 1 tragedy in Las Vegas.
As we waited at the counter to pay for our purchases, the visibly shaken clerk remained on her cell phone.
“I just found out that my family is OK,” she said when she finished her call. “My son and other family members were in Las Vegas for a wedding, and I’ve been unable to reach them. They’re OK!”
I was instantly con-nected to this family, and listened as the clerk filled me in on the details.
“I’m so happy for you,” I said. I walked out of the store think-
ing of the thousands of people
whose lives had been affected by the shooting, and again prayed for the victims and their families.
I also thought of how many times I’ve said that I would pray
for something, then for-got about it.
Country music star John Rich was inter-viewed on television, and his words resonat-ed with me.
“People say ‘our thoughts and prayers...’” Rich said, in reflecting on the massacre. “You actu-ally need to pray. You actually need to speak to the Lord and say, ‘Please bring some com-
fort to these people.’”

LAPLACE — The halls of St. Charles Catholic High School are filled with the sights and sounds of youthful enthusiasm and excite-ment.
The first school Mass for the entire student body was held in the school’s Commons.
The Mass, which was offered on the feast of St. Matthew the Apostle, was celebrated by new chaplain, Father Bo Majors.
Father Bo continued the theme in his homily, challenging attendees to remember that Jesus calls us as we are, that though St. Matthew was a tax collector and sin-ner, Jesus chose him to be one of his Apostles.
Also, at the Mass twelve Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion were com-missioned for Masses at SCC, as well as at their home church parishes.
Senior students select-ed as Extraordinary Ministers of the Holy Communion for 2017-18 are Nicol Bourgeois, Jade Brady, Shana Breaux, Abby Bryant, Anna Dawson, Kenneth Matar, Callie Henry, Grace Mohon, Dominique Perilloux, Grace Richoux, Joshua
Sherman and Haley St. Martin.
After Mass, Principal Drew Cupit welcomed and addressed all of the students regarding his expectations.
“The fall semester of school is always excit-ing for all of us at SCC,” Cupit said.
“We look forward to focusing our efforts on helping our students to learn, encouraging them to achieve their dreams and ultimate-ly preparing them to
earn their diplomas and move on to college while focusing on faith and service.
“We all realize that this is an awesome responsibility, but it is one we gladly accept. Parent involvement is one of the keys to the success of SCC. We are happy to begin another great year of teaching and learning in our new and improved school facility and also another great season of Comet Friday Night Football.”

LAPLACE — In high school, Chris Cancienne was a star football player for St. Charles Catholic. Today, he stands on the Comets side-lines, helping injured play-ers while also managing his own physical therapy busi-ness.
Cancienne is the owner of Cypress Physical Therapy, which recently celebrated its first anniversary in LaPlace and expanded to include a new location in Gramercy.
He said he has always had an interest in helping people recover.
Growing up as an athlete while his mother worked as a nurse, he was no stranger to seeing injuries. Yet, along with the wounds, he saw healing.
Prior to opening his busi-ness, Cancienne played foot-ball at Northwestern State University and obtained degrees from Louisiana State University campuses in Baton Rouge and New Orleans.
After moving back to LaPlace and starting his physical therapy career, he realized his true passion was in outpatient therapy and made plans to open his own clinic.
Office manager Rebecca Specht has known Cancienne for over six years, and she said she’s proud of the prog-ress he’s made in that time.
“He had a dream and made it real,” she said. “You’ve got to have a lot of pride
and respect for someone who does that.”

When someone enters
Cypress Physical Therapy, he or she will see Cancienne working with patients and equipment in the open area directly behind the front desk.
“We designed it want-ing it to feel different and give off more of a welcom-ing vibe than other offices,” Cancienne said. “Instead of
sitting in a separate waiting room, they can see what’s going on, and that adds to the experience.”
Patients have told them they notice the difference, and he replicated the lay-out in his new Gramercy location, run by his friend, Dustin Roussel.
Cancienne said the most
rewarding part of being a business owner is receiving feedback from the commu-nity and having past patients refer others to him. Though he is excited to extend ser-vices to St. James Parish, he said further expansion plans are not currently in the cards.
Rather, Cancienne is focused on continuing to improve and perfect the ser-vices offered at his two exist-ing offices.
“We’re eventually going to grow out of this location,” he said. “Ideally, I’d like to knock down walls and expand the space. The plan is to stay in LaPlace.”
Though he moved away for a few years in college, Cancienne has always called LaPlace home, and he wants to continue giving back to the community.
In addition to regularly attending SCC football games to provide physical therapy services and educate the team on injury prevention, Cancienne also visits various races and golf tournaments around the parish, where he gives advice on warm-ups and stretching.
Other Cypress Physical Therapy technicians vol-unteer time at the Council on Aging, hosting Wellness Wednesdays to discuss health and exercise tips for seniors, he said.
“I’m doing what I love every day,” Cancienne said. “If you are interested in physical therapy, stick with it. It’s a challenging but rewarding profession.”
