Commodore’s Cornerby Jimmy Meyer, 2010 Commodore

Welcome to Autumn, and the Fall cruising and racing season. The weather is finally becoming reasonable, and it is pleasant to be out on the water again. Elsewhere in this issue, you will find information about upcoming cruises and races. Remember, you do not need to have a boat to participate in any of our club races. Just show up on race day, and we’ll get you a ride. I don’t know of anyone getting left behind at the dock. Also this Fall, we have the return of two popular, club sponsored regattas. The One-Design Regatta, coordinated by Mark Rother is October 23rd, and the Bait & Tackle UnRegatta will be November 13th. Danette Szakaly is the coordinator.

Many things are happening at the club right now, so I’ll start with the most obvious—this newsletter. The production team has changed again, this time with Jennifer Rogers doing layout and design. I have decided to become the permanent edi-tor (is anything really permanent?), and Richard Walters will be helping with Ad sales. All submissions of copy and photos should come to me, [email protected].

Our Security gate is now in operation. After months of labor, testing, and inspections, Bob Hall and his team have done a good job of making the club a safer place. The gate will be open during normal business hours, and accessed by a keypad code at night. The code is available on the secure portion of our website, or may be obtained from any officer. A remote “clicker” is available, see Bob Hall for details. All pedestrian traffic is to use the newly installed pedestrian gate, which is secured by a club lock. No member will ever be denied access to the facilities.

Our entrance channel security camera is now up and running. Also, cameras have been installed in the Sunfish and Pram stor-age buildings.

The nominating committee has presented its list of candidates for office for next year. (Published elsewhere in this issue) At the October general meeting, we will accept any nominations

Rear Commodore’s Reportsubmitted by Richard Walters

>> continued on page 11

We were very busy this past September 18th Workday since Sail School was running and we had a lot of new people at the club. I really missed Dorothy Whyte and Jim Craver at this workday but those two lovebirds flew the coop to Cancun to their time-share. Thanks go to my buddy Gyb Spilsbury who came early to help with break-fast. Gyb has finally made the transition to being permanently here, so he should be a regular at the porch committee daily discussions.

Breakfast and Kitchen Crew (Led by: Capt. Sandbar and Gyb Spilsbury)

Judy Baggs was a wonder woman in the kitchen and didn’t leave a square inch of it not cleaned. WOW what a job. I had to finally throw her out of the kitchen after hours of scrubbing. She said “but look at this floor”, my reply was… “yes, its there and its not going anywhere, so go and relax – enough done today.”

Yard Beatification Team (led by: Jennifer Rogers) Jen led the charge this workday for Linda and Matt who were on vaca-tion. She organized the troops using Linda’s “To Do” list and sent them off in all directions. I even caught our Commodore, Jimmy Meyer in the act pulling weeds. I’d also like to thank Rhonda Fuller, Kayla Becker, Mike Baggs, Todd Staudinger, and Don Rogers.

Wheelbarrow Surgeon TeamI want to thank Don Rogers and Mike Baggs for tackling the heavy job of fixing the ailing, over-used, and overly abused wheelbarrows we have. I think Mike said he is going to donate another wheelbarrow to the club – thanks Mike. I think one went to wheelbarrow heaven.

Clubhouse Super Sweeper TeamLynda Calvillo and Sayler Rodriquez were sweep-ing wild ladies and cleaned every bit of the out-side porch area and wiped down all the tables. It looked so good you could eat off the floor.

Outside Refrigerator Refurbish TeamThanks to Ann New & Co. (Sayler and Ridge) for scrubbing every square inch of the outside refrig-erator. We had some good biology experiments started in there, and they put a quick end to that.

By the way I just want to make a statement about the usage of the outside refrigerator. It can be used by any member to store your food in, as long

as you don’t leave it in there so long it starts rotting. If you put your name on it, then oth-er members should respect that and leave it alone. We have had things permanently misplaced that members have put notes on. Please respect your fellow club member’s personal items. If you put something in there and you don’t care if someone uses it, please put a note on it, or say that it is free for the taking. This policy is the same for the inside kitchen frig. Enough said – capish?

The Ice ManThanks go out to Pim Miranda for fully cleaning the ice machine. He said we need to get a bit of muriatic acid to clean the calcium deposits off but this needs to be done very carefully. I have some at home for cleaning my engine heat exchanger and will bring some in.

That Old Hurricane Refrainby Dan Chesnut

(Note: This article was inspired by the infamous 2004 hur-ricane season.)

As I write, the first coolness of early autumn is upon us and it is a rare, hurricane-free week here in Florida. Hallelujah! I should now feel much better except, like a “bad trip,” my storm weary head has these deranged, mechanical sounding messages looping through it: “Must go to Home Depot. Buy more plywood. Need more bottled water. Beep!”

My hurricane procedures are now well honed. The batteries are fresh, the car is full of gas, and I know just what hurricane party foods to have on hand. Thanks to trial, error, and nerve-wracking lengths of time waiting for the storm to get here, I also know what clueless weather forecaster to tune to so I can neurotically find out what the approaching storm has done since I last checked five minutes earlier.

We have these evacuation zones: A, B, C, D, and – heaven forbid we ever need it – E. Your assign-ment to a given zone depends on your distance from a log-jammed evacuation route. What was left out was a special evacuation zone Sub-A, for those who live not only at low elevation, but right at the water. That is where the storm surge rises over the roof and your house turns basically into a reverse aquarium in which the fish are the ones looking inside. At you! And by then you have the same bug-eyed, open mouthed look on your face they have! There also is the little known evacua-tion zone K, for the surfing nuts who head for the beach, cry “Kawabunga, dude!” and then charge into oblivion and early entry into the great surf zone in the sky, where hurricanes always hover safely offshore generously pushing great waves to the beach.

The only people who actually like having a hur-ricane come at them are those weather forecasters on TV. They love it. For them, it’s, “Whee! We get to talk about storms! Yay!” They know the rest of

their lives consist of endless days repeating the same, boring forecast: “High of 89 degrees. Low 78. Light afternoon breeze. The Bucs will lose.” The latter prediction probably improves their fore-cast accuracy.

Some of my favorite on air scenes are when one of these so called meteorologists go outside and pretend they are braving hurricane conditions 200 miles from landfall. They put on a rain coat, go out behind a building when it’s raining, and lean dramatically into the wind. “John, the wind’s really picked... (break) Oh! That was a big gust there. I can hardly talk!” Those people aren’t about to get anywhere near the storm’s landfall, but they do their best to either win a Peabody award or land a job at the local comedy club.

Every time a big hurricane hits the coast, some clowns stay at home (in Zone Sub-A) to “ride out the storm,” and afterwards, they are basically not seen again. Now, as a former wa-terfront resident of many years, I understand what it is like to receive evacuation orders. The sun is still shining, you are in at least partial denial that your physical world is about to disappear, but they are telling you to evacuate for... HURRICANE LISA! Huh? The last Lisa I saw was nothing to flee. One time it was... HURRICANE FERNANDO! Are we supposed to run from a Caribbean, cross-dressing conniption? Now, I agree that Hurricane Ivan was a fantastic name for a hurricane. Who wouldn’t run

Cruising Reportsubmitted by Larry Fiorenza

BCYC November Cruise October 30-31 Moore’s Anchorage

The Cruising date is a week earlier than originally scheduled to accommodate the Sea Scout Cat’s Paw Regatta.

Typically, weather permitting, we usually sail to Moore’s on the “Outside”, entering the intracoastal waterway through the bascule bridge at Long Boat Key. The bridge opens on demand by calling on channel 9.

It can also be accessed by boat by the intracoastal waterway going South through the Anna Maria Bridge and the Cortez Bridge. This route requires local knowledge or extreme care, following the markers in from Tampa Bay very closely, as 99% of the water you see is too shallow to boat on. It can also be driven to just South of Bradenton Beach via the Gulf of Mexico Blvd off of Manatee Ave W in Bradenton.

Moore’s Anchorage is FREE. On the chart it is considered part of Sarasota Bay. It is a relatively

sheltered anchorage on the North, East and West sides but there is a long partially open fetch on the South via Big Sarasota Bay.

Moore’s Anchorage features two very nice restau-rants with free dockage for either your boat or your dingy: Moore’s Stone Crab Restaurant and Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant.

Our cocktail party has been held by dingy on one or more of our larger boats, or we have been known to dingy in to the Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant and use their bayside tables for our cocktail party. Of course, you might be expected to order some of your snacks and libations from the restaurant. For those that are still hungry and can still walk, Moore’s Stonecrab Restaurant is right next door for dinner.

Upon arrival Saturday or on Sunday AM, it is just a short walk West on Broadway Blvd to the Whitney Gulf Beach and you might get a look at the many locally famous Flamingos that roam freely through the area.

Other entertainment is unpredictable. Last year we were treated to the sight of a million dollar yacht trying to sink our commodore’s boat in the middle of the night.

Captains Meeting will be Saturday at 9 AM.

from the floor, with the election held at the No-vember general meeting. Remember, one vote per membership, no absentee or proxy voting.

BCYC is a Boat/US Cooperating Group. This entitles our members to receive a 50% discount on Boat/US membership. Benefits of membership include discounts at West Marine, and discounts on fuel, repairs, and transient slips at over 900 marinas. Our Group number is GA80544Y. Use this number to get your discount when you apply for member-ship. Application forms may be found on one of the bulletin boards at the club.

At the September Board Meeting the following items were addressed:

• The Board decided to purchase an ad in the Centennial edition of Gulfport Magazine. Several board members made personal donations to help defray the cost. They know who they are, and I thank them.

• The Security Committee was changed from an Ad Hoc Committee to a Standing Committee. Bob Hall continues as Chairperson.

• The Board adopted a Security Gate Policy. It is published elsewhere in this issue.

• Proposed a Bylaw change in the duties of the Rear Commodore. Published elsewhere in this issue, it will be voted on at the next General meeting.

• Also discussed was the formation of a database to better track and utilize the talents and in-terests of our members. Gerri Angel and Doug Fuller are working on this project.

Until next month, see you on the water.

Jimmy

from something with that name? “Ivan the Ter-rible” was a Russian czar who killed a lot of people. Actually, the killing part probably goes without saying when it comes to czars, but anyway that name was an exception.

I have a suggestion: If officials want 100 percent evacuation, they need to use more convincing names for these storms. I propose they devise a list of really scary names for approaching hurricanes, and then we’ll see people evacuate in earnest and the casualty list would drop dramatically. Officials could go on TV and cry, “Look out! It’s HURRICANE EBOLA! Leave now!” That would get people mov-ing! Or, “HURRICANE FUNGUS is going to affect your area! (My “area?” Yikes!) And if for some devious reason officials wanted to evacuate only Democrats, they could call the storm “HURRICANE DUKAKIS.” “Noooooo! I thought they retired the names of previous disasters!”

Proposed bylaw change. At the August Board of Directors meeting, the board approved the following bylaw change. It will be voted on at the next general meet-ing following this publication.

Merchandising OrganizationSusan was on hand getting our new wicking shirts organized. These new shirts are awesome for keeping you cool, so stop by and see her and buy a shirt. She really takes pride in coming up with new merchandising ideas for us – Thanks Susan.

Fire Ant MercenariesGive two dudes some lethal chemicals and they will annihilate the attack of the giant fire ants in one fell swoop. Larry Fiorenza and Steve Conn had a fun workday taking out our invading fire ant infantries.

BCYC Sail School SignThanks to Gary Bush and Doug Fuller for putting up our Sail School sign above the bathrooms. Now we won’t keep tripping on it, lying behind the blackboard. Looks really good up there, guys.

Side Exhaust Fan OverhaulThe side exhaust fan keeps eating up belts, so Gary Bush and Craig Smith analyzed the situation. It appears we have some pitted pulleys and a mo-tor that has a couple of loose screws. They cleaned up the pulleys the best they could and lubed up the bearings. I will check out the motor and re-build it if it makes sense. Things are cooling down now so we can do without the side exhaust fan for a while. I will also replace the wire from the switch box which is frayed.

Old BBQ Grills Be Gone (poof)It’s a funny thing about old BBQ grills, no matter where you hid them in the clubhouse they never

seemed to disappear, yet no one touches them as if they have leprosy. Thanks to Nick Southard we have a new grill, but thanks to Todd Staudinger and his visiting girlfriend, Jill Freeman from Raleigh NC,

for helping me put them in my truck to give them a decent burial at the city dump.

If you have stuff lying around you don’t want to go to the city dump, I suggest you remove it from the clubhouse grounds, because before the end of the year all junk will be gone.

Catching Everyone In Pictures: Bill Casey and Capt. Sandbar (filling in for the still-vacationing Jim Free-man at Westminster Suncoast)

Please give Jim Freeman a call when you have time and tell him to get his butt out of there—we need him back at the club. Give him a call at 727-867-1131, or visit him at

Westminster Suncoast 6909 Dr. MLK St South Saint Petersburg, FL 33705

Give his wife Jane a call and cheer her up, and tell her a good joke too at 727-954-3844.

On Tuesday, 8/24/10, the Audit Committee performed a detailed audit. 2010 2nd Quarter bills, receipts and documentation for each check issued were reviewed. Deposits were confirmed.

BCYC’s books were well-maintained, the documen-tation was proper, and transactions were correct. The next audit will be in late October, 2010 for the 3rd Quarter of 2010.

Boca Ciega Yacht Club’s 25th Annual Lighted Christmas Boat Paradesubmitted by Barbara MeyerChristmas Boat Parade Co-ChairBCYC is holding its 25th Annual Lighted Christmas Boat Parade on Saturday December 11th , 2010. Members spend many hours planning and then decorating their boats in hopes of sharing the holiday spirit with the surrounding communities. Residents of Gulfport, South Pasadena, and St. Petersburg frequently contact the club for the date so holiday parties can be planned around the event.

This year the parade will begin by entering the Gulfport Municipal Marina at approximately 6:00 pm. It will then travel past the William’s Pier in Gulfport and into the canals of Town Shores Condominiums. The final leg is to motor back east and enter the canal leading to the Broadwater community.

There is a small entry fee of $5.00 plus two or more unwrapped toys. Each year toys are collect-ed for “Operation Santa,” and presented to Gulfport’s Fire Department for distributing to needy children.

Sail and power boats are welcome to join in the fun. There will be a sign up board posted at the club by the first Monday in October. Entry forms will be available the night of the parade. Donated prizes are awarded to the participants during the post parade party, always to a clubhouse filled with family and friends. For information regarding participation or to sponsor this parade, please contact Barb Meyer (727) 430-7241.

The 2011 Installation of Officers and Awards Banquet submitted by Richard Walters

January 8, 2011Sirata Beach Resort & Conference Center

Saint Pete Beach, FL

All BCYC members and their guests are invited to join us in bringing in the new Officers and Board Members for 2011. This is the one time of the year we set aside our flip flops, shorts, and worn out t-shirts to wear some fancy threads and dance the night away.

This is just a preliminary notice. A formal invitation will be sent out, but I wanted to get people think-ing about our big party now so you can plan that outfit, ladies, and shine those dancing shoes, men.

Bill Bennett, the Sirata’s Convention Services Man-ager assures me he will go to any extreme to make sure BCYC has a memorable evening. We also will

have a new four piece band named the “Good For-tune Band” that some members have heard lately, and have given the thumbs up.

Talking with Bill, he told me the two best entrees his chef offers for our banquet are the following:

Chicken Roulaude and Mahi Mahi (w/o shrimp)Salad, soda, & coffee are included. We will be providing our own dessert (humongous cake!) along with some other sweet goodies.

Cost will be $35 per person.

Bring a $5 bill for parking at the Sirata (It was $10, but I got them to half it). You should see the formal initiations by the end of October in the mail. We may do the awards earlier this year, so we can dance and party longer. (Schedule TBD)

BCYC Gate Policyadopted by the Board of Directors

1. Automatic Gate: This gate is for vehicles only. Pedestrians MUST use a separate entrance. Chil-dren are restricted from playing in the gate area. When the gate is operating and closed it is self-locking. The proper access code is required to open the gate.

2. Pedestrian gate: This gate is for all pedestri-ans. It should be closed after entering. The gate is secured by a club lock.

3. Gate opening sensor: The automatic gate is ac-tivated when a vehicle comes within range of the gate-opening sensor. A bicycle, tricycle or other metal play equipment could activate this sensor. Children are not be allowed to play anywhere near this sensor.

4. Keypad access code: The security Chairper-son will notify the Commodore and Officers of all changes to the access code. The Commodore will disseminate it to the membership via the secure portion of the website, and by additional means as necessary. Do not give the code to anyone.

5. Access code changes: Security will continu-ously evaluate crime and burglary. If it is evident a non-member has access to our entry code, it will be changed.

6. Automatic gate hours of operation: The Rear Commodore will control the hours and mode of operation of the automatic entrance gate after consulting with the Commodore and the Board of Directors. Initially the gate will be open during the day and closed at night. Should the club experi-ence burglary during the day, the Rear Commo-dore can direct immediate and continuous opera-tion of the automatic gate. Exceptions can and will be made for special events.

Hi All,

We’re putting on an Oktoberfest party at BCYC. I just wanted to be sure to let you know that TSS is invited. Gulfport Yacht Club / GYC is also invited.

Place: BCYC | Date: 10/16/2010 | Cost: $5 per person | Time: Happy hour 18:00 / food 19:00

Dinner will be brats, sauerkraut, and beer.

Please bring a side dish. This can be anything from potatoes to salad or dessert. Let the imagination wander. (more beer always seems to be a hit)

We will have a live band. It’s just a typical rock / dance band. We didn’t want to take the OOOM-PAH whip out the tuba and clarinet polka stuff too seriously.

There will be a lederhosen contest.Categories are:

1. Best dressed in lederhosen

2. Most sincerely dressed in lederhosen (concept influenced by Charles Schultz & the great pumpkin)

3. Goofiest dressed in lederhosen

4. If somebody deserves honorable mention (aka jokes) this will probably happen too.

The event will be judged by applause. We’ll figure out some kind of a trophy or gift for 1st place in each cat-egory. (Besides lederhosen is easy. Just wear your usual cargo shorts, add some suspenders, tacky socks up to your knees, sandals, tacky shirt, everybody has one of those, and maybe a hat with some-thing stuck in the band.)

The weather and wind should be just about perfect.

The event is sponsored by BCYC. The coordinators for the event are Jeff Reckson and Guy O’Connor.

Captain Sandbar’s Sailing Adventures submitted by Richard Walters

Cruising through the year with BCYCThis year has surely been packed with a lot of exciting times at BCYC that I wanted to reflect back on past cruises and look ahead to the upcoming cruises for the rest of the year along with some other not to miss events at BCYC.

We started the year in a deep freeze that a lot of us thought would never go away. I can’t remem-ber a colder winter in a long time and many of our members decided to stay inside. But as you know Capt. Sandbar has a couple loose deck screws so he along with a couple of courageous crewmem-bers made even the cancelled cruises. I guess when you live in Alaska as a kid; the worst winter in Florida doesn’t even come close. I remember we had weeks of 40 below zero weather in Alas-ka, which kept you close to the potbelly stove in the cabin.

Well there is no potbelly stove aboard Vitalist but we sure could have used one earlier this year on the club cruises. Bruce Bingham who has logged more cruising miles than God has a nice cabin heater in his Cape Dory. Luck-ily our winters here in Florida don’t last too long but a good wool hat and layered clothing helped get us through the cold cruises - oh and don’t forget the bourbon. The Vinoy Basin cancelled cruise (not!) in January was a cold one and so was the Desoto Point cruise in February which the Angels and I diverted to behind the Don Cesar due to back weather. I think Bill Beyers on Sayonara was the only brave sole to make it all the way to Desoto

Point in February. I remember him calling the club asking where everyone was.

In March we had Blessing of the Fleet, which is a real special event that Guy O’Connor did a great job on. Unfortunately it didn’t help protect our Catalina’s too well this year in light of some ag-gressive sailing races on Tuesday nights. But if you keep your boat too pretty it usually doesn’t leave the dock so stop polishing and get out sailing. Jim Masson has done a stellar job in leading the rac-ing crews as our Race Committee Chair. I hope he continues leading the racers next year. If you want to learn how to sail better you should come out and race with this group, there are a lot of very sea-soned sailors that will help you improve your skills and confidence.

May 8th was our Annual Fun Day and once again Jean Proach led the charge for BCYC. We had a lot of first time sailors that had never been on a boat and some families that wanted to introduce sailing to their children and grand children. We had many BCYC mem-bers come out to help along with a bunch of our boat captains taking many trips to try to accommodate the large crowds we had. Lets all try to support Jean better next year and get more boats involved. Vitalist had a fuel

problem (got the flag!) that weekend so was knocked out of the running. We did have an unusu-ally low tide that kept some of our bigger boats out of the basin. I even think Tony awarded a few well-deserved

flags to some of our captains after our usual Fun Day mishaps.

Nominating Committee Reportsubmitted by Debra Elliott Vance2010 Nominating Committee Chair

Per BCYC’s By-Laws, at the September General Membership Meeting on 9/17/10, the Nominating Committee presented its slate of 2011 Officers and 2011 BCYC Board Members as follows:Commodore: Janet TerrellVice Commodore: Nick SouthardTreasurer: Michael MogaveroRear Commodore: Don RogersSecretary: Lisa GlaserFleet Captain: Bill CaseyPast Commodore: Jimmy Meyer

2010 - 2011 BCYC Board Members:

Lynda Calvillo–Bob Hall–Ed Hunter–Paul Pittman

2011 - 2012 (In-coming) BCYC Board Members:

Bruce Bingham–James Masson–Sheri Ogorek– Cathy Talisman

After the slate was presented, there were no nomi-nations from the floor at the September Meeting. In October, the slate will again be presented, and any nominations from the floor can be made at that meeting. If there are any nominations from the floor, an election will be held at the November General Membership Meeting.

Tips for Gate UsageOur new security gate is up and running, help-ing to protect our property and assets. Bob Hall has put in many hours on this endeavor, and would like to share the following with you:

1. Gate will be operational from 10 pm to 6 am. During normal business hours and official club functions the gate will remain open. It should be noted that pedestrians are to use the separate pedestrian gate adjacent to the main gate. In the event of a security issue, the Rear Commodore, after consulting the Commodore and Board, may order the operational hours changed.

2. For access when the gate is closed: There is a keypad located on the left side of the drive. You cannot reach it from your car; you must get out to enter the code. The gate will remain open long enough to give you time to enter. Because of installed safety features, it will not close on your car. To obtain the code you may a) attend a general meeting, b) attend a board meeting, c) ask any officer, or d) visit the secure page (members only section) on our website. Alternately, for those who wish, a remote “click-er”, similar to a garage door opener, is available for purchase. The club is not providing these, but Bob Hall can tell you how to obtain one. Once you have one, bring it to a general meet-ing or board meeting, and Bob will program it for you.

3. To exit when the gate is closed: Drive slowly up to the gate. There is a magnetic sensor buried under the drive: it will detect your car and the gate will open automatically. The gate has a battery backup system, and will function even during a power outage.

In September of course we had our annual Labor Day Weekend Raft-UP and once again Nick & Betty Southard had everything planned out perfectly, well except maybe the keg tap…LOL. I think we had a least ten salty sailors includ-ing myself try to get beer out of that keg in the middle of the raft-up. We only could get some foam so some of us decided that was better than nothing shooting it into our gullets.

We did have a couple anchor mishaps as usual (yes…yes…got the flag again…LOL) when a small squall made us end our party a little sooner than planned. Vitalist was anchored real well with a bow and stern anchor and Capt. Sandbar didn’t seem to think it was necessary to pull-up any anchors and move. Well of course this made it difficult for some to get untangled from my 5/8” heavy stern anchor rode I had out. If anyone finds a Danforth, with twenty feet of new galva-nized chain (bought for the raft-up), and two hundred feet of 5/8” rode at the bottom of Boca Ciega Bay - give me a call. Thanks go out to Joel Heyne and Scott Sharlow and com-mandeered Sea Scout who drug for it but my diving and their dragging didn’t turn up the darn thing. I should be set with the water gods for a while with this large sacrifice. One can only hope…

The last cruise on September 11th and 12th was to one of our favorite summer cruising locations

– Twin Dolphin. Captain Sandbar single-handed Vitalist with a small group of BCYC cruisers up the Manatee River to Twin Dolphin. Larry Fiorenza led the group over with Annette Mason on Retreat. We had a great time at dinner getting to know some new members Dave & Shelagh Roberts and

Diane Metcalf. We also had some seasoned BCYC cruisers along: Susan Setley on her Silver Girl, and Ken and Sharon Stone on Above and Beyond. Bill Beyers land cruised over to join us for our pool side happy hour before dinner. We had some decent wind to sail home to Gulfport on Sunday only to be delayed at the bridges due to the close opening schedule between structures E and C. Larry pitched a cold one to me which helped make the time pass even better.

Looking ahead, we have the Terra Ceia cruise October 2,3 along with a cruise to Moores/Longboat Key on Halloween Weekend (get dressed up) and on December 4 & 5 a trip down to Marina Jacks in Sarasota. Also one last thing, don’t forget about the Christmas Boat Parade on December 11th. Please call Barb Meyer and get involved. I have been decorat-

ing Vitalist the last few years for the local boat parades and it’s a lot of fun. Trea-sure Island Yacht Club also has a boat parade which is great also.

Sorry to be so long winded but it has been a really busy year with a lot of great memories so get your boat out and come cruising with us at BCYC.

Keep Off The Beach…

Roy & Mary Lou met in college and realized that they would never meet any one more spontane-ously fun to be with, so they just got married. Their adventures span half a century and they left the mountain camp that they live on in North Carolina last month to do what most hills people in NC do when they want a “Festive Event”. They went to Asheville to “party.”

That’s not where it stops folks. Mary Lou’s birth-day follows their anniversary by only 4 weeks.

Roy says it’s often the most expensive month of the year. This year Mary Lou said that she’s been parasailing but still wanted to do a Zip-Line. The mountains of North Carolina have some of the longest Zip-Line trips in the world—probably because of all the Florida “Half-Backs” who live up there in the sum-mer. Well the Young’s usually have a very short “Bucket List” because we all know that if we say it they’ll do it. For her 70th birthday Mary Lou got into the harness of a Zip-Line and squealed her way through the canopy of trees at altitudes of 60 to 80 feet flying from platform to platform. Roy did not want to be left behind so he followed her through the canopy of trees. By the time she got to the last section she even had enough confi-dence that she did it backwards.

News from the desk of your Flag Officersubmitted by Tony Angel

BILL MORSE has never received a flag! This is not be-cause he is a perfect sailor! Bill found a prospective buyer for “Pell-Mell” and talked him into coming up from the Keys for a boat ride. Captain Bill launched his trima-ran and squeezed the fuel bulb, -- only to have it fall apart in his hand.

After a trip to West Marine the new bulb didn’t start the motor either!

Undaunted our Captain Bill talked his guest into a hand-to-hand, boat-to-boat exit from the marina to the enjoy-ment of the “Porch Committee”.

Once out to the fairway these 2 mariners ran aground by the Coast Guard seawall, pulled up the center-boards and slipped sideways running aground again coming back to our docks.

Deciding that they were safer tied up; Bill sailed back up the fairway, turned a “180” at “D-dock” and flashed back to a head long collision with the end of “A-Dock” to finish off the “SEA TRIAL” by flipping his buyer into the drink.

The definition of “Pell-Mell” is reckless head-on confusion and she had lived up to her name! Bills buyer headed back to the Keys with the fleeting remark —“Vell Tank you Meester Mores for taking me sveeming”.

Raft-Up Chairman NICK SOUTHARD did a great job this year with a well-prepared dinner, a good band, and with Joel Heyne and Corinne O’Donnell in charge of tying up the raft Nick kicked back on Sunday to enjoy the event on his new toy (a 2,000 horsepower jet ski). With a twist of the wrist Captain Nick turned his jet ski into an airplane! As Betty watched Nick launched his new toy into an air-borne barrel roll. Nick flew into the bay and the vehicle of his enjoyment just circled him as he swam to catch it!

BOB HALL took his boat “Lucky Lady” out to the Raft-Up and had a great time. When the raft broke up he found that he had air in the diesel lines and he had left his tools beside the new gate that he has been working on for six months. With Bill Casey as a men-tor and on-board advisor he believed that the wind would blow him back to his slip. It did, for a while, and then he got on the wrong side of the day mark-ers and earned his first “Grounding Flag” to go along with his new “Broken Engine” flag.

There’s more folks. How do you think Captain Bob got un-stuck and back to his slip? Our Raft-Up Chair-man Nick Southard threw him a line and “Celebra-tion” towed the un-Lucky “Lady” in. That gives Nick a “good ship lollypop” and Bob gets the “Toe”.

Our Rear Commodore, RICHARD WALTERS took “Vi-talist” out to the raft intent on having a great time at the party.

He did, and an overheated Rear Commodore with “Happy Feet” became the first sailor to jump into the bay.

Timing is sometimes a problem with engineers, and Richard was also the first sailor to get chased back onto his vessel until the raft was finished.

When storm clouds appeared at Raft-Up DOUG FULLER fired up the engine on his musical trawler “Relax’n”. He apparently forgot that he was still in the raft. The engine came to a quick stop moments later as it struggled to gobble up every anchor line around it. Doug gets a “Fouled Prop” flag to fly at next years Raft. Beats a string around the finger!

As Joel and the Sea Scouts struggled to maintain order in a most disorderly and stormy raft break up on Labor Day Captain RICHARD WALTERS de-termined that his 37 ft Anchor boat “Vitalist” was well anchored and safe to just stay in place with 800 foot of rode out on both ends. Richard soon discovered that his “boat-trap” could be very excit-ing in a “Pell-Mell” stormy break-up as one vessel after another tripped over his lines like Lemmings headed for port.
