Celebrate National Library Week 2015 (April 12-18, 2015) with the theme "Unlimited
possibilities @ your library®." (Our events are scheduled a week later April
19—26) with our “Unlimited Possibilities”
The staff at La Cygne Library would like to encourage you to check out the “Unlimited Possibilities” at our library during the month of April. Be sure to check the calendar on the back for all our programming dates. We have something for everyone from the traditional books, movies, story hour, magazines, and more to the more specialized offerings such as the tea party, Adventures (STEM) program, and Student Showcase. We invite you to visit the library this month, get your library card and get ready to join us this summer with our Summer Program “Every Hero Has a Story...Every Story Has a Hero”. The official National Library Week was created in 1958 to promote and celebrate libraries of all types, public, private, academic and school. Take some time during that week to let your librarians and staff know what you appreciate about your library. Tues-day, April 14th is set aside to recognize library staff across America and their contributions to your communi-ties. Stop in and say “Hi” that day and let us know what you appreciate about the “Unlimited Possibilities” that are found at the library.

8th Annual Student Showcase and Open House—Sponsored by Friends of the Library
You are invited to visit the library during the week of April 20-24th and view artwork by the students from La
Cygne Elementary school. On Tuesday, April 21st, from 4 to 6 PM, you are invited to an open house. The
Friends group will serve desserts and drink and Friends members and others will be on hand to talk about the
importance of fine arts in the school. It is amazing as I go back through the history of libraries in La Cygne,
they have always been strong supporters of not only reading and books, but they have been encouragers for
the fine arts. We are proud to continue that tradition over 100 years later. We are asking Friends of Library
members and other patrons to donate desserts for the open house and we hope you will come by, sign
the guest book and take a look at the “Unlimited Possibilities” created by our elementary school students.
Annual Spring Tea—Sunday, April 26th @ 3 PM “Hometown Teams” Themed this year! “Take me out to the ballgame”….I don’t care if it’s baseball, football, drag racing, volley-
ball, track, cheer, cross-country, marching band, wrestling...and many more...that I’m
probably forgetting...but one thing that binds our community and families together is sports
of one kind or another. In celebration of the collaboration with the Historical Society, Kan-
sas Humanities Council and the Smithsonian Hometown Teams events, we decided to
change up our tea and make it part of the year long celebration. Usually we ask you to decorate a table with
your favorites and we invite people to join you at your table, this spring it’s something different. The library staff
is going to decorate the tables in sports themes and invite you to join us for an afternoon tea. The tables will
feature various sport activities and the foods will reflect favorite team snacks. It is something entirely different
and we hope that it will get you thinking about all the Hometown teams that we will be featuring from May to De-
cember at the library and museum. The cost is an $8 donation to the 2015 Summer Reading Program. Tickets
will go on sale April 7th. Get yours today and join in the fun!
Help Us Walk the Smithsonian Exhibit from
Kansas Back to Washington DC.
We have several teams who have agreed to “walk for Home-
town Teams” and are donating their minutes to the cause.
The 8 week program starts March 15 and runs through May
9th. It is an 8-week healthy lifestyle challenge! (Just tell
them you want your walk to count for La Cygne’s challenge).
Watch for other healthy living and activity tips throughout the
program.

I must admit when I applied for the Hometown Teams
Grant, I was not sure what we would do, but I felt that
there was a lot of team history around La Cygne. I am
thankful to all who have loaned us items for this display,
it has mushroomed into quite a project. I have learned
more about sports and players and especially teams and
fan support as we’ve worked on this project. Thanks to
Library and Museum for sponsoring this and thanks
to Ruth Reynolds for spearheading displays and to
all her helpers...we have a display La Cygne will be
proud of!! Plan to visit it this summer!
March was a busy month and we had a lot of fun activities going on at the library. If I took the
space to thank all the people who made it happen, I wouldn’t have any room for all the neat
photos. So a big THANK YOU! to everyone who made these things possible. We appreciate it!
