2014-2015 Dues (due by April 1, 2014)

2014-2015 DUES Dues for all members of Connellsville Lodge #503 are due by April 1, 2014. There is no increase in dues for 2014-2015 but a new donation line has been added. All donations to Lodge Activities will be used by the Lodge for the many community activities that we support, such as Youth Activities (little league, hoop shoot etc), donations to the library, Wesley Health Center, veteran’s programs and more. Donations can be any amount and donors will be recognized in the online bulletin and at the bar. Membership cards will not be available until mid-March as door locks will not be changed until April 1, 2014. Liquor Con-trol statutes prohibit any member admission to the bar after April 1, 2014 without a paid 2014-2015 membership card. Because of the high volume dues must be paid by March 1, 2014 to guarantee a membership card by April 1st. Dues paid after March 1st will be processed as quickly as possible. Members who would like their cards mailed to them must provide a stamp or stamped envelope. If paying at the bar please provide your phone #, mailing address and email address in order to keep our records up to date. Keycards are not mailed but can be picked up at the bar when you present your new membership card. Keycards are given to members only, no wives etc. ID cards are available for widows and spouses only and must be requested. Please don’t forget your donations to the Home Service pro-gram, National Foundation and Lodge Activities, they are tax deductible. Special stickers will be placed on donors cards.

The Tools to Build a Stronger Community How have you seen Elks National Foundation programs at work this year? Were community members in need given a hand? Were local youth provided a head start toward a bright, healthy future? Vet-erans in need given the care they deserve? Across the country, Elks are using the tools the ENF provides to build stronger communities. One of these tools is the Community In-vestments Program. For 2013-14, the ENF budgeted a record $8.5 million to help Elks build stronger communities by leading local, chari-table projects. Look at Hickory, N.C., Lodge No. 1654. The Lodge used a CIP Gratitude Grant to provide food for children in need every week throughout the school year. “We provided hungry children with nutritional meals over the weekend,” says CIP Project Manager Carole Anderson. “Thanks to the Gratitude Grant, this was our Lodge’s largest community service pro-ject ever.” Ensure the ENF continues to provide tools like the CIP by donating by March 31, 2014—the end of the 2013-14 fiscal year. Your dona-tion will build stronger communities and help us qualify to apply for a $2,000 Gratitude Grant. For more information on the Gratitude Grant and other CIP grants, visit www.elks.org/enf/community. Visit enf.elks.org/donate to support the ENF before the fiscal year dead-line. A 501(c)(3) public charity, the Elks National Foundation helps Elks build stronger communities through programs that support youth, serve veterans, and meet needs in areas where Elks live and work. For more information on the ENF, visit www.elks.org/enf.

Thank you to the members and friends who volunteered their time during February. More volunteers are always needed for our weekly Wing Nites and our monthly Steak Frys as well as ticket sellers. Election of Officers

Life Membership

The Following Members have met the requirements for Life Membership (30 years of membership and 65 years of age): Terry Boors, David Pavelosky and Louis Stern. They will be voted upon at the meeting on Monday, March 10th.

WHEN IS ST. PATRICK’S DAY? St. Patrick’s Day takes place each year on March 17, the tradi-

tional religious feast day of Saint Patrick.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY CELEBRATION Corned beef and cabbage is a traditional St. Patrick’s Day dish.

In 2009, roughly 26.1 billion pounds of beef and 2.3 billion pounds of cabbage were produced in the United States.

Irish soda bread gets its name and distinctive character from the use of baking soda rather than yeast as a leavening agent.

Lime green chrysanthemums are often requested for St. Pat-rick’s Day parades and celebrations.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in the United

States on March 17, 1762, when Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City.

More than 100 St. Patrick’s Day parades are held across the United States. New York City and Boston are home to the largest celebrations.

At the annual New York City St. Patrick’s Day parade, partici-pants march up 5th Avenue from 44th Street to 86th Street. Each year, between 150,000 and 250,000 marchers take part in the parade, which does not allow automobiles or floats.

PLACES TO SPEND ST. PATRICK’S DAY There are seven places in the United States named after the

shamrock, the floral emblem of Ireland including Mount Gay-Shamrock, WV; Shamrock, TX; Shamrock Lakes, IN; and Sham-rock, OK.

Sixteen U.S. places share the name of Ireland’s capital, Dublin. With 44,541 residents, Dublin, CA, is the largest of the nice, followed by Dublin, OH, with 39,310.

Other towns with the luck of the Irish include Emerald Isle, North Carolina and Irishtown, Illinois.

FACTS ABOUT IRISH AMERICANS There are 34.7 million U.S. residents with Irish ancestry. This

number is more than seven times the population of Ireland itself.

Irish is the nation’s second most frequently reported ancestry, ranking behind German.

Across the country, 11 percent of residents lay claim to Irish ancestry. That number more than doubles to 23 percent in the state of Massachusetts.

Irish is the most common ancestry in 54 U.S. counties, of which 44 are in the Northeast. Middlesex County in Massachusetts tops the list with 348,978 Irish Americans, followed by Norfolk County, MA, which has 203,285.

Irish ranks among the top five ancestries in every state except Hawaii and New Mexico. It is the leading ancestry group in Delaware, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

There are approximately 144,588 current U.S. residents who were born in Ireland.
