They would be allowed unrestricted daily phone calls.There would be a board of directors to hear any complaints,with Unions & Activists would fight for theirrights and protection.The guards would have a code of conduct to be strictly adhered to,with attorneys available, at NO charge to protect the seniors and their familiesfrom abuse or neglect if treated in an unkind manner,or if feelings are hurt.As for the criminals:They would receive cold lousy tasting food.They would be left alone and unsupervised.They would receive showers once a week, maybe.Lights off at 8:00PM every night.They would live in tiny rooms, for which they wouldhave to pay $3,000 per month, or more.They would not receive any government supple-ments,pensions,securities cheques, because they hadequity in a house at one time.(Bet you didn't knowconvicted killers like Cifford Olson, get paid....in jail)Due to the strictly enforced security,They'd have nohope of ever...getting out. Let me sum it up with thephrase by Al Pacino, in the movie "Justice for All"."No, Your out of Order, this whole court is out of Order".

For John Hecht, the bucket list dream of building a '56Mercury half-ton began in Cranbrook in August of2002. He purchased a cab, frame and miscellaneousparts, then hauled them home to Calgary. While a '56 Ford F-100 pickup is rare enough, aMercury M-100 was built exclusively by Ford ofCanada, and much lower production. Besides that,1956 is a one-year only body style. It is the only yearof this series to have a wrap-around windshield.

But that's not all. John was born in 1956, but that's notall, either. John's parents won a new 1956 Ford car ina raffle, so they had many happy memories of thatyear. Before construction started, John spent a lot oftime seeking counsel from several people who hadcompleted their projects. The most repeated advice was todecide in advance what theme or design he wanted. Johnchose to be loyal to the basic styling of the truck, aim-ing for a stock exterior. The running gear would belikewise, except for a few upgrades to increase thecomfort, safety and driveability. Pretty or not, trucks ofthis era were primarily a workhorse. These trucksmostly came with a 292-V8 Y-block engine, and Johneventually located one. He hauled it over to KennyGilmour to have it rebuilt.

The block was bored sixty-thousandths oversize and apair of ported 312-V8 big-valve heads were prepared.An Edelbrock 600 CFM carb with electric choke sitson a stock cast iron manifold. What appears to be thebreather pipe sticks down one side of the engine, butcloser inspection reveals a tell-tale hose drawing thefumes off to a PCV valve. Aside from the image thing,we are all conscious of the environment.

In 1957, Ford introduced the 9-inch diff, which was notonly much stronger, but could be had with a widerange of ratios. John found one with 3.89 gears andslid it underneath. It would work perfectly with the new

TREMEC TKO 3550 overdrive five-speed transmis-sion that had recently been delivered to his door.The old "farmer four-speed" floor shift handle wasretained, and bolted to the new transmission. In these old trucks, the clutch and brake pedals comeup out of the floor, instead of swinging downward fromthe firewall like everything from about 1955-on.A power booster was mounted under the floor, thenfour-wheel disc brakes were installed. Retaining thesolid front axle, John adapted a Toyota power steering setup.

Naturally, things like the vacuum windshield wipershad to go. They were replaced with a kit from RainGear. A (wiring) kit was used to rewire the whole truck,and the stereo system is hidden. New gauges wereused, and in keeping with the 21st century trend, theashtray was eliminated and filled in. The interior wasfully-lined with Dynamat to ensure it was as quiet as amodern truck. A new foam seat was done up in the stockpattern, along with a molded headliner.

As a first-time builder, John was happy to locate the790-page "Ford Truck Parts & Accessories Manual(including illustrations)." Making the project even morespecial, John was able to bond with his dad, a retiredauto mechanic now living in Red Deer.

Under his dad's supervision, John learned how toweld, run a lathe, and eventually overcome all thetruck-building challenges. The memories are evenmore precious since his dad was diagnosed with lung cancerlast week. We never know what each day will bring.

This show is now in it’s fifth year and will feature show cars and entertainment as wellas a collector car auction and commercialvendors. Expect about 150 cars at auction.

Another big draw at this event will be the carshow competition, an expected 80 cars willregister in one of ten categories to be judgedfor the chance to win a cash prize and trophy. Spectators can cast their votes for apeoples choice award- perhaps the mostprestigious award of all and the cash prizefor Peoples choice award is $1000.00.

The car competition is an integral part of theshow and continues to grow each year, withthe collector car craze crossing over threegenerations, bringing Grandfathers, Fathersand Sons to the competition.

The Show producers are happy to announcethe return of George Barris to this years RedDeer Speed and Custom Show. The customcar world calls Barris, creator of some of themost memorable custom cars ever built- likethe Batmobile, the General Lee, KITT, theMunstermobile, and many more-the King ofKustomizers. Another big name in the carculture is none other than Brett Wagner akaThe Big Schwag! from Speed TV’s hit showPass Time, Brett will be onsite both Saturdayand Sunday meeting up with drag racers andfans alike. The 2011 show starts Friday,March 18th at 5pm and will continue throughSaturday 9am-8pm and Sunday noon to5pm. Every $10 gate admission is good forall three components of the show or for $15you can get a weekend pass.

Also here was Bryan Fuller, co-host of TwoGuys Garage wfth his newest build, TheImpaler In building4. See cars built for Rockand roll legends including Jimmy Vaugn ofthe Fabulous Thunderbirds and a Brizio-builtrod for famed musician, Eric Clapton. Our feature building,Customs, Then andNow, holds a collection of some of the mosthistorically significant custom car's in theworld. Building 9 was filled With over 75 different members of custom car royalty.

Aesthetic detail and flowing bodylines pleased the eye as you strolledthrough the time-lined exhibit and experi-enced the history of the cruisin' custom days.

Well gang, it's already February and anyonewith a pulse knows it's time to drop the green flag,light the green bulb, fry up the Goodyears, and fill theair with octane fumes. Yes, racing season is finallyback and my rumor about Austin Coil survived thewinter. I guess it's okay if I'm wrong now. One thing Iam positive about is one of Coil's former JFR team-mates. Ashley Force-Hood will not be behind thewheel of her Mustang this year. Instead, she will bebehind a baby stroller. The lead footed daughter ofthe winningest driver in the history of AA/FC will betrading in 4-second blasts down the quarter…wait,check that, 4-second blasts down the 1,000 ft. for 4am feedings and diaper changes. Yep, Ashley and herhusband are expecting their first child in August.

Another lady drag racer that managed to become amom and drive her way into the record books will bethe Grand Marshall of this year's March Meet. ShirleyMuldowney will be on hand at Auto Club FamosoRaceway for this year's running of the meet. Thismarks the first time in some 25 years that Shirley hasvisited The Patch. I surfed over to the Famoso site tocheck a few facts before writing and I see that the for-mat for Nostalgia Funny Car will change at this event.Blake Bowser the track proprietor says, "We're goingto have 40 to 50 of them (Funny Cars that is). 16qualify, 24 going home. I don't want to see that. We'lldo a Chicago-style shootout, take the non-qualifiersand give them a timed run and bring back the quick-est. It'll be a chance for them to run their car ratherthan packing up and going home." Nice touch Blake!

Since the March Meet falls past the deadline for theMarch issue, I'm going to have to search for a topicfor next month's issue. Unfortunately, the WinterNationals won't make the calendar this year. But, thatwon't stop me from finding something to write about. Itmight be time to go Hot Wheel shopping with theMongoose or at least go down south and see what'shappening at the Donut Shop in H.B. We'll just haveto wait and see what turns up. Before I get too farahead of myself, I need to take care of a little busi-ness for this month.

My big plan for February was to go to Pomona andthe 62nd annual Grand National Roadster Show,which I did, and let me tell you, it was something tosee. The house was packed and by Saturday, almostevery square inch of the place was covered withDetroit steel. I'm not going to give too much awayfrom the GNRS because our editor Don was on thescene to bring you all of the coverage. I'm going tokick a few photos into the mix but that's about it.

To finish out this month, I'm going to roll theclock back to October and tell you about an invitationonly car show that the guys at the Hot Rod Ranch puttogether. 2010 was a big year for the brothers Muroand their home grown Hot Rod Ranch located inbeautiful Lompoc, CA. The Ranch was brought to theforefront of hot rodding world when a 1955 gasser thatthey helped Dave Miller build, landed on the cover ofHot Rod Deluxe magazine. After hearing about thebrothers, and The Ranch, legendary motorsports jour-nalist Dave Wallace made a trip to California's CentralCoast to write a story about the family and the HotRod Ranch for Hot Rod Magazine. And as they say inHollywood, "a star is born"!

Some of you might remember the red 56 BelAir named Panama Red that has appeared on thepages of Quick-Times in the past. Panama Redbelonged to Gil, the oldest of the three Muro's. Itseems Tri-5's run in the family's blood, even the patri-arch of the family, Gil Sr., owns a beautiful 57 Chevy.

Since the Hot Rod Ranch is close to my house, I stopby at least once a week to see what's going on. In2009, Gil started talking about having some friendscome by for a car show, maybe a mini swap meet,and a BBQ. If I haven't told you by now, red oak openpit barbequing is a way of life here on the CentralCoast. Everyone has a stack of red oak in their yard.So, the mere mention of a BBQ in itself would haveattracted attention. Gil's original plans for 2009 kind ofwithered on the vine. But by the time the summer of2010, rolled around things were different. With a littlehelp and inspiration from newly named editor of HotRod Deluxe Magazine and old friend, Dave Wallace,the first annual Gasser Round-Up was born. Phonecalls and emails flew across the airwaves to gasserowners far and wide and before you knew it, the guestlist was actually a substantial list.

The amazing part of the Round-Up was the loyalty ofall of the people that attended. Most of the folks trail-ered their cars. Some traveled over 250 miles andspent the night in a hotel just so they could be a partof this event. I really think this type of dedication is atrue testament to the friendship and camaraderie thatis created by the car hobby!

Since I was the local boy with a camera and a long-time friend of the aforementioned editor, I was giventhe nod to provide the pixels from the event.

So like any dedicated reporter, I got up early and hadbreakfast at a local eatery and then it was off to theMuro Ranch. Of course, the dogs weren't even upwhen I got there. But before too long, the sound ofhorsepower was singing through open headers as cars werebeing backed off of their trailers and pulled out of the shop.

As you can imagine, once word of the Round-Up gotaround town everyone wanted to bring their cars tothe show. Plus, there are a lot of cars in the area thathave had the Hot Rod Ranch treatment. So, thedriveway and the area in front of the shop wasreserved for the non-gasser cars. The grass field nextto the shop is where all of the gassers were parked.The day was great and the group of cars was impres-sive. The only thing that got in the way was a thickmarine layer of fog and mist that dampened every-thing except the spirit of all in attendance. The originalidea of a BBQ (which is a lot of work) changed toauthentic homemade Taco's. The Muro women pulledout all the stops and served up the best beef and porktacos that I have ever had…no lie! Of course, there was freshhomemade salsa to top off the tacos and ice-cold refreshingbeverages….in case you chose the high octane salsa.

Later in the afternoon as people were starting to maketheir way home, I overheard plans being madebetween people for next year…that's a good sign. It'slike that old T.V. commercial "They told two friends,and they told two friends, and so on, and so on"!Since the event, I've talked to the guys about the 2011edition of the Round-Up. Everything is looking goodand the date is going to be moved back toward sum-mer instead of fall. I can't wait to see what this year brings!
