PETANQUE (pronounced pay-TAHNK) - Of the many activities BISC offers, petanque has the distinction of being held outside, right across the street from the senior center. This fun game with the funny name originated in Provence, France and is very similar to bocce except bocce is more of a bowling game, whereas petanque is more of a tossing game, like horseshoes. Bocce players take steps before rolling boules (metal balls) with their palm up. Petanque players stand still and toss the boules with the palm down which allows them to get backspin upon release. Depending on how many participants we have on the day we play, teams consists of one to three players. We start out by simply tossing boules as close as possible towards a small wooden target ball, the cochonnet or “little piglet”. First, one team throws the cochonnet 20 to 30 feet away. Then, each team alternates taking turns trying to get their boule closest to the cochonnet while standing in a 17-inch circle. The team that is closest to the cochonnet doesn’t throw again until their boule is not the closest to the cochonnet anymore. The team with the closest boules to the cochonnet receive a point for each of their boules that is closer than any other team’s boules. The first team to reach 13 points wins. Part of petanque’s appeal is that it’s a low impact sport that can be played by almost anyone. Age, strength and speed are not important - plus the equipment is inexpensive. Presently we have a few extra sets for those who want to try a game. More experienced players, who prefer having the own set of boules, can purchase them on the internet. They just need to be sure and select them in groups of three with different ring patterns on each set. We play petanque every Thursday from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm in Waterfront Park. If you haven’t yet, come check us out. Participating in this fun game is a perfect way to enjoy the outdoors, exercise and make new friends. Hope to see you some Thursday afternoon! (see page 7 for details.)

TABLE TENNIS, ANYONE? - Several times a week, Huney Hall is filled with people of varying ages and walks of life who all share a love of hitting a small white ball back and forth on a table with a net in the middle. It’s a great way to get some exercise and even work out your aggression, and nobody gets hurt. We started playing Table Tennis at BISC over 5 years ago, after some players got together to expand their pool of opponents. The sizable space and support offered by the senior center helped them reach this goal. Nowadays, we have players with a whole range of abilities and skills, from beginners to serious competitors. There are a few ground rules, such as an expectation that everyone plays with everyone else and takes turns, with the goal of having most games with others who are near your own skill level. We also advise everyone to wear appropriate shoes (like tennis shoes) for stability.

Besides being such an enjoyable group activity, playing table tennis on a regular basis carries a number of health benefits. Whether you’re playing doubles or singles, it’s a cardio workout, uses both the upper and lower body, improves eye hand coordination & balance, burns calories, and is gentle on joints. In addition, during a match you use many different areas of the brain at once as you’re tracking the ball, planning shots and strategies, and figuring out spins.

So you’ve nothing to lose and everything to gain by joining us. Beginners may be most comfortable on Mondays, from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm, as Thursday evenings, from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, are often more competitive. Saturday mornings are split between competitive singles only from 9:00 am to 10:30 am, then open play for all comers (usually doubles)

from 10:30 am to noon. We have 2 Singles and 2 Doubles Tournaments a year. Also, Mark Salvadalena hosts table tennis practice nights on Tuesday evenings (see page 7 for details.) What’s the difference between Ping Pong and Table Tennis, you may ask? Well, Ping Pong is played in the basement and Table Tennis is an Olympic sport!

2018 CITIZEN AWARDS NOMINATION~ Our Executive Director, Reed Price, has been nominated for the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year/2019 Grand Old 4th Parade Marshall. Based on his gigantic efforts toward creating a cheerful, fun center for our seniors and his work with other non-profits to create on-going collaborations, his vision of helping all seniors navigate the process of aging is epic. The winner will be announced Saturday, March 2, 2019 at the Island Honors Banquet held at the Wing Point Country Club.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE - Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of aware-ness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symp-toms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by remembering 3 simple steps (STR) and asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE. T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE or PHRASE (Coherently) R *Ask the person to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If the individual has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call the emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke ---- Stick Out Your Tongue - Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.

TALKING ABOUT DEATH WON’T KILL YOU

As I'm writing this, I'm sitting at home looking out the windows at this amazing winter wonder-land. It's so quiet, except for the wind chimes, as bursts of wind create swirling, temporary blizzards. I'm practicing just being...enjoying the moment. I'm not going to worry about the basket of newly priced donations sitting by the door. After Christmas, the little shop seemed so empty. It only took a few weeks to fill up again. We were really light on household and kitchen items, but it didn't take long before just the right donations flowed in. I love how that works. Valentine’s Day seems to come quickly after the holidays, but I happily welcome the cheerful

pink and red hearts and cute cards with declarations of love. We had many bins of outerwear in our storage shed, more than I thought we could sell but this cold weather has been timely. Our shoppers have been looking for coats, and thankfully, there are still plenty to choose from. By the time you read this, the snow will likely be a memory, so I intend to enjoy every minute of this. Because I know, soon enough, stir craziness will set in, I will be needing to socialize, hear the snow stories and get those new goods to the store. I'm already imagining where everything will go.

COOKING FUN & TIPS with Kathryn LaFond

Baked Potato Fiesta: To bake potatoes in half the cooking time, slice them in half length-wise. Rub with olive oil and place flat-side down on a cookie sheet in a 400-degree oven for 30 minutes. That’s a better portion size anyway! Serve with all manner of toppings to enhance your meal and add flavor: Green onions, minced Cheddar cheese, grated Broccoli florets, blanched Red onion, slivered Crisp bacon, chopped Smoked salmon, flaked Black olives, sliced Yogurt or sour cream with soy sauce Butter, or cream cheese Herbed Chevre cheese Health Benefits: Cooked skins are rich in antioxidants and chlorogenic acid that prevents cell mutations leading to

cancer. If you think you can’t eat potatoes because they raise insulin and blood sugar levels too quickly try eating them

with yogurt and soy sauce instead of butter. Don’t eat potatoes with a meal high in total fat and you’ll supply a large

vitamin/mineral content while controlling a sustained energy release.

Housing Resources Bainbridge - Independent Living Program

Maintain an independent lifestyle by enlisting supports to reduce the risk of having a fall.

The City of Bainbridge Island supports HRB’s Independent Living Program to improve accessibility both inside and outside your home. Eligible health and safety repairs include improving air quality, replacing hazardous flooring, and improving lighting. If you are “reaching” for supports, stepping around hazards, or feeling unsafe in the bathroom, a walk through safety assessment of your home could lead to funded modifications improving the quality of life and reducing fall risk. “Hope your Holidays were happy. I’m ready for 2019 clients,” Julie Stone at Housing Resources Bainbridge 206-842-1909, ext 17, [email protected].

Getting to Know You

Page 13

Vivaldi and the Seasonings by Venera di Bella Barles Most women experience the joy of the holidays as a mixed bag of pleasure and misery. Ach! Mine was a test of the little faith I had left. In the midst of having my kitchen and two bathrooms painted and doing the final revisions on my novel, the vacuum cleaner suddenly died. The ice water in the refrigerator parted ways with its pipe and flooded the kitchen. The loaded freezer in the garage unexpectedly ceased working and the melting lamb, beef and lasagna became one as they slid to the bottom. In the cellar, an extra-large, 1973 hot water heater sprang a leak.

Sensing that my cluttered and dispirited mind needed soothing, some compassionate women friends asked me to join them on a spectacular shopping, eating and high culture day in the city. The high culture being tickets to a Vivaldi performance.

On our morning shopping run, we covered a lot of territory and made some hot buys. Thankfully, I’d remembered to wear sensible shoes since my swollen gout toe wouldn’t fit into anything else. We ate at an upscale Thai restaurant where I selected my favorite, Phad Thai, that wonderful highly seasoned noodle dish loaded with pork, nuts, bean sprouts, green onions, and other hid-den goodies. After we finished eating, we dashed to the symphony hall a few blocks away. Excited, I knew Vivaldi’s concert would appease the inner domestic tumult threatening my sanity.

Upon finding our seats, I immediately removed my wool jacket. Already I was feeling claustrophobic from the over-whelming lack of air circulation. With my broken inner thermostat it’s never cool enough for me in theaters. As the concert got underway, I became acutely aware of the reeking odor of onions – the smell when someone has just carried in a bag of hamburgers. This aroma was so distracting that I lost the details of part of Mr. Vivaldi’s ‘Summer’.

At that point, I checked my armpits to make sure my five-day deodorant pad hadn’t failed. I reached into my blouse and put a hand under each armpit, then gave them the nose test, and by God, it wasn’t me. But as the heat of the auditorium accumulated the onion whiff grew stronger while I grew meltingly warmer. Sensuous, sleep-provoking violins, combined with the fermenting noodles in my belly, kicked in my somnambulism. My head began to nod and I fell back in the arms of Morpheus. When I snored, my friend on the right jabbed my side and brought me awake.

Finally, it was intermission. Molto bene. Most of the listeners sprang out of their seats and moved to the lobby, I stood by my chair stretching my legs – and keeping one eye out for the unaccountable bag with the burgers. It was appalling to suspect that someone would dare to cross the line of propriety and bring their lunch. Maybe the bag was under their seat! Locating this odorous onion smell had become an obsession.

As the break ended, I began feeling somewhat revived due to being fanned by a lady friend and downing three chocolate covered espresso beans. By the time Vivaldi came back to awaken my Baroque soul the caffeine had kicked in. La primavera “Spring” started. All was good - until my obsession began overwhelming my senses. Damn, where the hell is that onion smell coming from! Maybe it’s in my nose. I blow my nose--nothing.

My jacket and brochure slid off my lap. As I bent to pick them up, my snout was in line with my chest enabling me to look

down my blouse. The bassoonist was playing the Concerto in A minor Larghetto.

What the hell?

Finally, the source of my torment--there it was! A lovely green scallion and a bean sprout -- nestled and cooking in my

cleavage.

Act as if what you do makes a difference, because it does!
