What makes Manhattan Beach so wonderful? Is it the beach? The way we know
our neighbors? The quality of our public schools? Our willingness to volunteer
wherever and whenever we’re needed? Somehow the stars have aligned, and in
our little town, we have found a way to work together to take the District with the
LOWEST state funding in California, into a model for what public education can
be. This is not something that is achieved overnight. It is a labor of love, and takes
countless volunteer hours each year, a willingness to invest in our schools, and
the vision of what our District can and should be.
Tonight we come together to celebrate our Manhattan Beach community.
A community that has proven, again and again, that our children are our priority.
Together we have funded programs that enhance the lives of all 6,800 students
in our District.
The funds we raise tonight will help to preserve teachers, hands-on science,
technology, writing programs, smaller class sizes, music, elementary PE,
individualized counseling, librarians, and so much more. With our collective
investment in the Endowment, we are working to ensure that our community
will have GREAT SCHOOLS FOREVER.
The Wine Auction would not be possible without the contributions of so many.
We thank the Wine Auction Committee and the volunteers who have been
working tirelessly for months to help make this event a success. We are grateful
to the restaurants and wineries for showcasing their culinary offerings, as well
as our table sponsors, event underwriters, silent and live auction donors, and the
Wine Advisory Board.
We are truly grateful to the Manhattan Country Club for their incredible
generosity, year after year. The Wine Auction simply wouldn’t exist without their
partnership. We’d also like to thank our Founding Sponsor Chevron, as well as
Belkin and Moss Adams, for their significant investment in our community, our
schools, and our children.
Finally, we thank YOU — our parents, business partners and community members
— for being here tonight. The Wine Auction is our opportunity to come together,
have a great time and support our schools. We thank you for your partnership in
this tremendously important endeavor.
Sincerely,
Roger Spencer, Chair, Manhattan Wine Auction & MBEF Board Member
Remco Waller, President, MBEF Board
Mike Duckworth, President, MBEF Endowment

There are Four Main Factors that Impact our District’s Funding:
1) California Funding for Education is Inadequate. California is 44th in the nation
in school funding, and 50th in both student to teacher and student to counselor
ratios. When compared to states like New York and New Jersey with average per
pupil funding above $20,000, our average funding does not meet the needs of
our state’s students.
2) We are a Revenue Limit District. Only a small portion of our property taxes support
education. The formula to allocate property tax dollars is based on spending levels
in the 1970s. At that time, MBUSD was a K-8 district and allocated a small portion
of property taxes to schools. As a result, MBUSD is a “Revenue Limit” district and
does not retain property taxes. “Basic Aid” districts, such as Palo Alto, Laguna Beach
and Beverly Hills, funded education at a higher level in the 70s, so they retain excess
property taxes. Most of the funding for our schools is supplemented by the state.
3) We Do Not Have a Parcel Tax. Unlike the other highly ranked districts listed below,
we do not have a parcel tax that supplements state funding. A parcel tax is generally
a flat tax assessed per parcel for ongoing educational expenses, such as teachers
and enrichment. All of the districts below have education foundations that provide
anywhere from $1M-$6M of funding each year, in addition to their parcel tax
revenue. Palo Alto and Laguna are also Basic Aid districts, and retain property taxes.
Your support of the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation provides our students
with programs that inspire learning, enrich teaching, and promote innovation and
academic excellence in the Manhattan Beach public schools.
In 2016/17, our community funded 71 educators who bring our children music,
hands-on science, physical education, reading fundamentals, libraries, electives,
STEM classes, and Writers Workshop. Our children benefit from a robust
counseling program and learn in smaller classes. These kinds of opportunities
take more than money; they take dedication and partnership from all community
stakeholders.
Impressive as these numbers are, they only begin to convey the sheer magnitude
of what our students receive as a result of your investment in MBEF.
Many of our District’s programs and positions would be eliminated if not for
the generous support of our community. Thank you for your partnership.
PUBLIC SCHOOL: WHY PRIVATE DONATIONS? You have heard again and again that funding for our schools is inadequate.
But few people understand WHY.

MBEF FUNDED PROGRAMS:2017/18 SCHOOL YEAR — MORE THAN $6M IN GRANTS
4) Our Student Population Does Not Qualify for Supplemental Funding
Through LCFF. While in recent years funding for education in California has
improved, it is important to note that most of this funding goes to schools
with large numbers of high need students – those classified as low-income,
English learners and foster youth. Of ALL school districts in California, MBUSD
has the LOWEST number of students who qualify for supplemental funding.
Local Control Funding Formula is an important step to strengthen our state’s
schools, but funding in California remains inadequate for all students.
For All These Reasons, MBEF is the Only District-Wide Resource Available to
Fund Teachers and Enrichment. The MBEF Endowment provides an alternative
mechanism through which our community schools can achieve long term
sustainability. Your support of MBEF and the Endowment is critical to the quality
of our public schools.

Please join us in contributing to the MBEF Endowment. We have Great Schools Now. Your gift will ensure we have Great Schools Forever.
WHO SHOULD GIVE?
Parents. Alumni. Parents of Alumni. Grandparents. Business owners. Longtime
residents. New arrivals. Anyone who believes in the power of an excellent public
school education. Strong schools build strong communities. They help protect
property values and strengthen community ties. Our schools are an integral part
of what we love about Manhattan Beach.
IMPRESSIVE RESULTS
Despite limited funding from the state, MBUSD outcomes speak for themselves.
MBUSD is among the top K-12 school districts statewide and our students gain
access to a rich and diverse curriculum. We host California Teachers of the Year
(2014 and 2015), award-winning Model UN and Theater programs, Grammy
award-winning Mira Costa Music program, Distinguished, Gold, Blue, and Green
Ribbon Schools…the list goes on.
There is no question that our schools and our students excel because we have an
engaged community that is willing to invest time and money into our children’s
education and future.
HELP THE ENDOWMENT REACH $20 MILLION BY 2020
Please join us as we build our Endowment to $20 million by 2020. At this level, the
Endowment will disburse approximately $1M to our schools every year in perpetuity;
regardless of fluctuations in the economy or shortfalls in Sacramento. Our goal is
to reach a point where the annual return on investment is enough to make up for the
instability of public school funding.
THE POWER OF COMPOUNDING IS SIGNIFICANT
Thirty one years ago, MBEF established an Endowment to provide a consistent,
sustainable source of funding for Manhattan Beach public schools. Twenty seven
years later (2014), the Endowment crossed the $10M mark and made its first
distribution of $116,000.
In 2017, our Endowment disbursed $500,000 to our schools.
It took 27 years for the Endowment to reach $10M, during which time the Endowment
did not disburse funds. It took only three years to get from $10M to $15M, and during
this period disbursed nearly $1M to our schools. That’s the power of the Endowment.

Welcome to another fabulous Manhattan Wine Auction! The Wine Advisory Board proudly supports the Manhattan Beach Education
Foundation via the Manhattan Wine Auction. The WAB, as we’re known, takes
the communal feeling of sharing a great bottle of wine with friends and extends
it further. If you’re interested in donating to future Wine Auctions and would like
to join the WAB, we would love to have you.
The wines donated to tonight’s event represent years, even decades, of collecting
and cellaring...but we all agree that great bottles are meant to be shared. Our
donors repeatedly reached for cellar treasures to bring hundreds of bottles here
tonight, valued at nearly $200,000.
Tonight, we gather around a glass (or two...or...) of wine and celebrate the success
of Manhattan Beach public schools. The hard work of MBEF, our donors and the
many volunteers, make MBUSD one of California’s most successful districts,
despite being one of the lowest funded in the state.
We are always happy to open our cellars to share wine with our friends and
neighbors, especially for the benefit of our children and the community. Cheers!
Please browse the pages that follow without guilt – it’s for the kids, after all!
Ralph Canada, Chair, Wine Advisory Board

LIVE AND SILENT AUCTION RULES
No bid shall be valid unless acknowledged by the auctioneer. In the case of two or
more persons bidding simultaneously, the auctioneer will determine who made the
final bid. The auctioneer will declare the lot “SOLD” and the highest acknowledged
bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the lot and thereupon assumes full risk
and responsibility thereof. The person making the final bid will immediately pay
the full purchase price. All sales are final and there will be no exchanges or refunds.
Please read the auction item description carefully and note any restrictions. Should
a dispute arise between bidders, or should the auctioneer doubt the validity of any
bid, the auctioneer shall have the absolute right to resolve the dispute, re-offer,
resell or withdraw the lot in question. Seller’s sole responsibility for non-delivery
shall be limited to refunding the purchase price. By bidding, the bidder agrees to
be bound by these conditions of purchase.
All items in the Silent Auction are available for bids via smart phones or terminals
at centrally located kiosks using Gesture’s electronic system. Each item has a
description and lot number. Persons desiring to bid must do so by registering to
bid with a credit card on the Gesture application. Each increase in bid must meet
or exceed the minimum increase figure assigned to each item. The Silent Auction
will close at approximately 8:00 pm. Reminders will be sent via text message
leading up to the close of the Silent Auction. All items must be purchased at the
close of the event and must be claimed and picked up by the buyer by June 13,
2017 at the MBEF office in Manhattan Beach. All items not picked up and paid for
by June 13, 2017 shall be resold by the Manhattan Wine Auction or donated back
to the 2018 Manhattan Wine Auction. By bidding, the bidder agrees to be bound
by these conditions of purchase.

million a year. Greg’s performances are always a combination of passion, humor
and heartfelt engagement. He enjoys “encouraging bidders to spend more than
they should on things they don’t need in support of a great cause,” and always
makes people feel good about doing exactly that.
ALL SALES ARE FINAL, NO REFUNDS OR EXCHANGES WILL BE MADE.
All payments must be made in cash, check, AMEX, MasterCard, or VISA by the
end of the event, June 3, 2017. The seller does not warrant and expressly denies
responsibility for and in no event shall be responsible or liable for the accuracy
of the description of the wines and other items offered, or the correctness of the
catalogue, including, but not limited to: the origin, rarity, age, rating, genuineness,
quantity, aging potential, present and future quality or condition of the wines or
other lots described. All statements by seller are merely statements of opinion and
are not to be relied upon by prospective purchasers as warranties or representation

of destinations, itineraries, facilities, accommodations, dates or associated activities
are not available through seller and requests for same will not be accepted.

They are subtle and nuanced, coming from France’s top producers in both Bordeaux and Rhone. Vintages date back over thirty years but can still be cellared to enjoy later. MBEF ENDOWMENT PADDLE RAISE10
HELP THE ENDOWMENT REACH $20 MILLION BY 2020.
THE BENEFITS OF AN ENDOWMENT
Much of the success of our schools depends on the tremendous support from our community. Each year MBEF grants over $6M for educational programs throughout our District, most of which comes from annual donations from parents. When we look to the future of our schools, increasing the MBEF Endowment has significant advantages.
• The Endowment creates an ongoing source of income. Because our endowment provides a reliable source of income in perpetuity, MBEF can count on annual distributions to support grants, regardless of fluctuations in the economy or shortfalls in Sacramento. By growing the Endowment to $20M by 2020, it will disburse approximately $1M to our schools every year.
• The Endowment relieves fundraising pressure on our Annual Appeal. Donations to the Annual Appeal have been the primary source of funding for providing enrichment programs in our schools. It is challenging to grow the Annual Appeal to meet increasing demand and costs. The Endowment provides additional support for MBEF’s annual grants.
• The Endowment upholds our donors’ values and priorities. Our Endowment provides assurance that programs that are important to our donors will continue for generations to come. As priorities change, so may the programs, but the funding will always be there.
Please join us in this important endeavor and raise your paddle tonight!

STEAM in our Schools: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.
STEAM at the Wine Auction: Schrader Cellars, TUSK, Elio Grasso, Araujo Estate and Memento Mori. Included are four bottles of Schrader Cellars in their original wooden case. TUSK might be the hardest Napa wine to find anywhere. These are Araujo’s last two vintages of Eisele Vineyard wine since the estate was sold last year. Speaking of Elio Grasso’s 2008 Barolos, critic Antonio Galloni said, “Both Baroli are drop dead gorgeous”. Memento Mori continues to break away from their peers with the 2012 and 2013 vintages. These wines rarely come together so don’t miss this opportunity.
