Daily BulletinTwo directors still eligible

for Youth NABCMany of the players at this year’s Youth

NABC have been more or less regulars since the inaugural YNABC in 2008. Victor Lamoureux and Albena-Maria Vassileva are two of them, earning masterpoints and trophies over the years with and against their peers. The two arrived at the 2017 YNABC with bridge accomplishments most of the others don’t have. They are directors.

Lamoureux, 19, is an ACBL TD, having taken the director course three years ago at the Summer NABC in Las Vegas. He has been directing games at the bridge club in his home town – Halifax NS – since then, and was working at the NABC in Toronto before taking time off to play in his last Youth NABC (he will be too old next year).

Lamoureux has always been interested in the laws and how the games are run. As an 8-year-old playing at the Halifax Bridge Studio, he often volunteered to enter scores in the computer. He took the step toward learning the trade while looking for a part-time job. He has worked for ACBL at the Can-At Regional in Halifax and at a few local sectionals. At this tournament, he worked from the first Thursday through Wednesday of this week.

“I really enjoyed it,” he says. “I felt really welcomed, and they’ve made sure to teach me things they thought I didn’t know. They have made me feel like part of a team.”

After working with Lamoureux, TD Scott Humphrey praised the new TD. “He’s very eager to learn, and he gets to rulings really fast. It’s a pleasure to work with him.”

Florida Junior Bridge, one of ACBL’s most successful youth bridge programs, has also been a major supporter of the Youth NABC. This year, the District 9 program sent 32 players, shown here, to the 10th Youth NABC.

Young players not afraid to ‘play up’

New bridge players are often told to “play up” – that is, enter events where the competition is tougher – if they want to get better. Just how many aspiring players act on that advice is unknown, but two participants in the 10th Youth NABC in Toronto put the admonition into practice, with good results.

Jacob Freeman, 16, of Toronto, and Martin Zhao, 13, of Richmond Hill ON, entered the Wernher Open Pairs, which began on Wednesday, and made it to the final on Thursday, the first day of the Youth Tournament. Considering how they did in the Wernher, they didn’t mind missing that day.

It was the first time the two had played together, and entering the tougher field was a last-minute decision.

They were influenced to give the Wernher a try in part because of advice from Nader Hanna, who coaches young players in the area, and from other experts. “Everyone told us we might get killed,” said Zhao, “but you learn more than in other games. It’s

a better field and we thought it was better to try new things.”

The two days in the Wernher opened the young players’ eyes. “You learn bridge from a new angle,” said Freeman. “It’s a different style of game and we learned a lot from the experience. We also developed a lot as a partnership.”

Said Zhao, “It was fun to play against the expert pairs. It’s a good place to learn.”

The Wernher was Freeman’s second shot at playing up at this tournament. Earlier in the week, he and Bo Han Zhu found themselves leading the field after the first day of play in the Young 0–2500 Life Master Pairs. The two finished 10th overall.

Thursday’s Winners

This fall, Lamoureux is entering Dalhousie University in Halifax to student computer science and business. He plans to continue playing and is looking forward to competing in China next year as a member of the Canadian Junior team.

Vassileva, of North Bay ON, was one of 29 ACBL members who took the three-day director course at this tournament from TD Priscilla Smith. The 15-year-old did so because starting next month she will be teaching bridge at a senior home and wants to be able to run duplicate games once her students learn enough to play.

As part of the course, Vassileva and other students spent time with Smith in the I/N games, learning about setup, how Bridgemate scoring works and how to get the devices going, plus the most important part: dealing with the players.

“Priscilla is really great with the people,” says Vassileva. Watching Smith in action, she said, “really helps with the people part.” The experience so far,

she adds, “has definitely helped me understand bridge more.”

Smith says it is a hopeful sign for bridge that more young people are interested in the directing side of bridge. “If we can light a fire under them, they can light a fire under other kids and our game can go on for a long time.”

Double trouble? Not reallyBidding in the Cardrook Pairs at the Youth

NABC can be an adventure. David Metcalf, director in charge at the tournament, says redoubled contracts outnumber the doubled variety. On this board from the Friday Morning Cardrook Pairs, Marshall Johnson and Tomos Salathiel, both of Barrie ON, added to the redoubled total. This was the deal: Dlr: South ♠ A 4 Vul: Both ♥ A J 7 2 ♦ Q 9 8 5 3 ♣ J 4 ♠ J 8 7 2 ♠ K 10 5 3 ♥ 8 5 ♥ K 10 9 ♦ K J 10 7 4 ♦ 6 2 ♣ 10 2 ♣ 9 8 6 5 ♠ Q 9 6 ♥ Q 6 4 3 ♦ A ♣ A K Q 7 3

The bidding is not available, but Johnson, South, found himself in 3NT doubled. He promptly pulled out the redouble card and quickly took five clubs, two hearts plus the ♦A and ♠A. The score: plus 1000 for North-South. Asked what he thought when his partner redoubled, Salathiel said, “I was kind of scared.”

Youth NABC has strong sponsor support

When Patty Tucker was putting the first Youth NABC together back in 2008, one of her goals was to bring in sponsors to help make winning more meaningful for the players. The first to sign up was Jim Maier, owner of Baron Barclay Bridge Supply. He agreed to provide scholarship money for the winners of the main pairs event. It has been known as the Baron Barclay National Youth Open Pairs ever since. The winning pair divide a $2000 scholarship payment. The money is paid to whatever college or colleges the players decide to attend.

“It’s an incentive for kids to come and play,” says Maier. “Our company depends on a new generation of players. We’re a for-profit business and we want to sell books and supplies, so we need new players. We are proud of the fact that our name is out there and we’re helping the youth movement.”

Ray Lee, founder and owner of Master Point Press, is another supporter of the Youth NABC, providing $1000 in scholarship funds for the player chosen for the Master Point Press Sportsmanship Award at the tournament. The award goes to the player who gets the most votes for the honor from his or her peers at the tournament. Lee says the concept of sportsmanship is “something that is dear to my heart.”

Toronto-based Master Point Press is the world’s largest publisher of bridge books in English. It grew out of a magazine known as Canadian Master Point, also owned by Lee. The first book his new

company published, in 1994, was a compilation of articles from the magazine. Since its founding, Master Points Press has printed 250 different titles.

The National Youth Swiss Teams this year is sponsored by John McAllister, creator of the documentary film “Double Dummy,” which was shown at the Youth NABC venue Thursday evening. The filmmakers followed the USA1 under-21team in the World Youth Teams Championships in Taicang,

China, in 2012.McAllister, former investment manager, showed

his dedication to bridge by spending five years developing the film and is continuing to demonstrate support for youth bridge with a $4000 scholarship to be divided among the members of the winning Double Dummy National Youth Swiss Teams in Toronto.

In an interview published in Daily Bulletin number 3 at this tournament, McAllister said of “Double Dummy,” “I want it to be a film for bridge players, first and foremost, something they can share with their friends who are interested in learning the game. I want to whet people’s appetites for the game.”
