Basin Summer SoundsBY KIM JORGENSEN of the Grant County Journal
A band comprised of original Third Eye Blind members and a crowd favorite from 2016 will headline this year’s Basin Summer Sounds music festival, set for July 21-22. Spike and the Impalers fill the 9 p.m. Friday spot, while XEB performs Saturday at 9 p.m. The main stage is located in front of the Grant County Courthouse in Ephrata.
In its 14th year, the largest free music festival in Washington state showcases up-and-coming musicians as well as seasoned performers.
Home-grown Stoney River Band kicks off the 2017 Basin Summer Sounds lineup at 5 p.m. Lead singer/guitar player Gordy Grenier is from Coulee City; he is joined by band members Doug Thompson, John Tillman and Dave Bomstad. The group plays new and classic country favorites.
Keeping with the country theme, Jones & Fischer takes the stage at 7 p.m. Darin Jones & Caleb Fischer were named the top country band in Washington by King 5’s “Best Of” in 2014 and 2015.
Back by popular demand are Spike and the Impalers (Friday, 9 p.m.). The classic rock band was formed over a decade ago, and continues to collect fans.
Alec Shaw (and Friends) opens the Saturday schedule at 1 p.m. The Seattle-based musician/producer first picked up the guitar in fourth grade, and soon added singing/songwriting to his repertoire.
Next up is Ranger and the Re-Arrangers (2:30 p.m.). BSS audiences will be familiar with Ranger Sciacca and his band mates, who first brought their gypsy jazz sound to the festival in 2016.
Briana Renea returns to her country roots, and to BSS for the second year in a row, with a 4 p.m. show. Raised on a farm in Oregon, Briana released her first EP, “Red Lips White Lies,” in 2015.
Nite Wave, Seattle’s favorite 80’s band, draws inspiration from Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, WHAM!, Spandau Ballet, The Police and other 80s super groups. Nite Wave performs at 5:30 p.m.
Also making a second appearance at Basin Summer Sounds is Brewer’s Grade (7 p.m.). The group has been delivering original country music since 2013.
XEB brings together former and original members Kevin Cadogan, Tony Fredianelli and Arion Salazar of 90s group Third Eye Blind, known for hits “Semi-Charmed Life” and “Jumper.” Lead guitarist Cadogan penned 10 of the 14 songs on Third Eye Blind’s debut album in 1997.
