Arch Madness has been an international star this season, winning 6 of 7 in- cluding the Oslo Grand Prix in Norway and an Elitlopp elimination in Sweden. He made a smooth transition back to the U.S., winning last week's Titan Cup prep in a 1:51.3 waltz. The 7-year-old gelding trained by Trond Smedshammer has already banked $361,545 this year. He has post No. 6 with Brian Sears set to drive the 9-5 favorite This will be a key test for Lucky Jim, the 2009 Dan Patch winner as top older trotter. He made breaks in his first three starts this season and was transferred from Julie Miller to Erv Miller. He qualified twice for the new barn and returned to action in a Meadowlands Invitational on June 17 with a dominant win in 1:52.3. Miller will keep the 6-year-old gelding with a history of foot trouble on a limited schedule. "He's as good as he's ever been," Miller said. "We don't have to race him a whole lot, just enough to keep him tight because he can go with most of them when he's OK." The second choice at 3-1, Lucky Jim starts from post No. 4 with Andy Miller at the lines. Corleone Kosmos has hit the comeback trail in good order this season. After a 1 for 11 campaign in 2010, Corleone Kosmos has already won three times this year. This will be his sixth straight Titan Cup appearance. David Miller will drive the 8-1 shot from post No. 2 for trainer Ross Croghan. Beyond the big three, champion mare Buck I St Pat (Jailhouse Jesse) is still looking for her first win this year. She has hit the board in four of six races, including a neck loss in the Maxie Lee final at Harrah's Chester. She is listed at 5-1 with Tim Tetrick steering for trainer Ron Burke. The field also includes Cutler winner Slave Dream (Pearsall Hanover), Four Starz Speed (Conway Hall), Pilgrims Chuckie (Broadway Hall), Neighsay Hanover (Muscles Yankee) and Sir Caviar (S J's Caviar). Saturday also marks the debut of a new wager at the Meadowlands: a Pick 5 starting in the first race. The Pick 5 is a 50-cent minimum wager with a 15-percent takeout. If nobody selects all five winners in the Pick 5, 75 percent of the net pool will be carried over to the next racing card and 25 percent will be distributed as a consolation. "We were one of the first tracks to introduce the wager last year at Monmouth Park and it was very well received, so hopefully the same will hold true at the Meadowlands," said assistant vice president of racing Alex Dadoyan. "Starting in the first race, it won't interfere with our popular nightly Pick 4 wager, but should have the ability to gener- ate some nice payoffs for the early part of the card and some occasional carryovers." In other Meadowlands news, race replays are back on SNY, the local cable sports channel. The show had been dropped earlier this year in the chaos surrounding the track's future. The shows are 30 minutes in length on weekdays and one full hour on weekends. Air times are 2 a.m. for Thurs- day and Friday recaps and 1:30 a.m. for Saturday. "I think it is important to our customers as we enter the heart of our championship meet to get back on SNY, as well as remaining on TVG," said Meadowlands Racetrack lessee Jeff Gural. "I also think it is important to have the one hour show on Saturday, which was something I always looked forward to as well. We are working on a plan to present to the industry that will hopefully expand our cover- age next season." Racing From The Meadowlands will continue to air on TVG at 6 a.m. Eastern.

No Purse Help for New Jersey Racing

Saying it goes against his effort to make horse racing selfsustaining, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Friday vetoed theminutes of a Wednesday meeting of the New Jersey RacingCommission approving $15 million in subsidies to augmenthorse racing purses. The newjerseynewsroom.com reportedthat Christie wrote a searing letter, saying that the "actions ofthe commissioners of the NJRC appear to constitute an abdica-tion of their responsibilities as commissioners to protect the bestinterests of the State of New Jersey and its citizens. "TheNJRC's decision to allocate $15 million in state subsidies for thesupport of New Jersey horse racing industry contradicts andjeopardizes my stated goal of creating a self-sustaining coursefor the horse racing industry, which culminated in the recentagreements with private individuals to shift track operations atboth the Meadowlands Racetrack and Monmouth Park from theState to the private sector."

State Budget Impasse Shuts Down Running Aces

From Running Aces Harness Park: Due to the Minnesota State Government Shutdown,Running Aces must temporarily close our business to thepublic. We are saddened that 600 of our employees arenow unnecessarily without work along with thousands ofothers impacted throughout the state. We are hoping thatsuch closure will be short lived and that our guests willsoon be able to return to Running Aces for their entertain-ment enjoyment. Democratic Governor Mark Dayton andthe Republican-controlled Minnesota House of Represen-tatives and Senate failed after months of wrangling toproduce a compromise budget by the July 1 deadline andthus many "non-essential" state agencies and tens ofthousands of state employees have been laid off, includ-ing the administration, veterinary and judging staffs of theMinnesota Racing Commission, which are needed toconduct a race program. Running Aces, which has com-pleted just 18 or 51 scheduled programs for 2011, did nothave a program scheduled for Friday night but had drawnrace programs for Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday andWednesday of the coming week. Decisions will bereached on a daily basis on the status of those programsuntil the situation gets clarification. State law requiresRunning Aces to race 50 programs annually in order tooperate the card room casino.

Rosecraft Raceway Looking to Re-open

The Associated Press reports that Rosecroft Racewayhas applied to resume live harness racing at the FortWashington track after three years. Penn National Gam-ing, Rosecroft’s new owner, submitted a license applica-tion in May. Penn National wants to have 20 days of liveracing this year and 54 days in 2012. The Maryland Rac-ing Commission will consider the request on July 6.Penn National bought bankrupt Rosecroft for $11 millionthis year. Rosecroft suspended live racing in 2008.

Former Garden State Park Publicist Fidati Dies

by Jerry Connors William “Bill” Fidati, 76, a Philadelphia journalist known tomany in harness racing as the long-serving publicity direc-tor at Garden State Park, died June 27, 2011. Fidati, whoearned a B.A. from Notre Dame and was number one inhis class, worked for two major Philadelphia newspapers--the Daily News and then the Bulletin, for two decades. Hewas regarded as a "digger" by colleague Frank Bilovsky, someone who could get to the heart of a story. He could"get people to tell him things." Fidati won the Best Report-ing Award from the area's Press Association for his cover-age of City Hall in 1970. He also showed a 40-year geniusfor lending a helping hand to fledgling journalists whoshowed the talent to work their way up, sometimes in theface of a hard-boiled lot who were the news and werecovering the news. Andrea Mitchell, now NBC's chief for-eign affairs correspondent, recalled, "He reached out andmentored me…and even got me to smoke the occasionalcigar," a Fidati trademark. Cont. p3

Fidati also worked the racing beat (onefreshly-graduated publicity pup remembers Fidati watch-ing him writing out a story in longhand, a leftover fromcollege days, and predicted, "You won't be doing thatlong"), and he was named publicity director of Philadel-phia Park (now Parx) in 1982, and moved across the riverwhen the new Garden State opened four years later. Anewcomer to harness racing office work remembers herfirst job at Garden State, "operating the matrix board," butshe remembers much more vividly how Mr. Fidati helpedher in various jobs when she started to write about theraces. "Then, in 1986, the Breeders Crown races were atGarden State," stated Communicators Hall of Fame nomi-nee Moira Fanning, "and while working for Bill I was intro-duced to Tom Charters." That quarter-century relationship, starting at Mr. Fidati's home base, is still going strongtoday with the outstanding work done by the duo for theHambletonian Society and the Breeders Crown. It wouldrequire a long, long search to find somebody who had abad word to say about Bill Fidati--or for that matter about aco-worker of his at Garden State and a very close friend, present Dover PR chief Marv Bachrad. Both were quietmen by nature, but thoughtful, and they led by example toa long list of young workers on their way up the racingladder. Mr. Fidati was close with his sister, Louise Grieve, living just down the block from her, and he is survived byher and nieces Denise Paykos, Donna Vivian, and DawnZappacosta. A funeral mass in Bordentown, N.J., pre-ceded Mr. Fidati's interment today in Calvary Cemetery,Florence, N.J

Flipper J Sets Goshen Track Record

by Ken Weingartner, Harness Racing Communications When driver Jason Bartlett asked Flipper J to go, the coltwent. Straight into history. Flipper J, a 3-year-old colt pacer, set the record for thefastest mile ever at Historic Track by winning a $15,000division of the New York Sire Stakes in 1:52.4 on Fridayafternoon (July 1). His time shattered the previous mark of1:55, which was first set in 1992 by Justin Kin and equaledthree times, including twice on Friday before Flipper J’srace. Friday’s card at Historic Track, celebrating its 101stanniversary of Grand Circuit racing, featured nine divisionsof the New York Sire Stakes for 3-year-old male and fe-male pacers. Flipper J, trained by Linda Toscano for owner KenJacobs, set the track record despite losing one of his frontshoes. “He’s just a good horse,” Bartlett said. “He gets around ahalf-(mile track) great. I didn’t even know what I was going,he just felt good. When I asked him, he just took off aroundthe last turn. That was pretty quick, I’ll tell you.” Flipper J has won two of six races this year and earned$38,122. Last season, he won five of 11 starts and$115,869. In Friday’s race, he got the lead with a :26.4 openingquarter-mile and never looked back. He reached the half-way point in :57 and three-quarters in 1:24.3. He won by1-1/2 lengths over Overnight Delight. “That’s pretty awesome, it really is,” Jacobs said aboutFlipper J’s performance. “He loves the front end and whenhe gets the front end he’s hard to beat. This was a goodtime to get (the track record) because the weather is nice. He’s a pretty nice horse. “Last year, he never got the credit I thought he shouldhave, and this year he’s starting to prove it. That’s a prettybig mile. I’ve never seen anything like it. I’m very proud ofhim.” Cont. p4

Flipper J’s victory gave Jacobs three wins on the day, joining filly pacer Lucky Turn and colt pacer Major Way. “I love it down here,” said Jacobs, who lives inBaldwinsville, N.Y. “It’s pure racing. It’s not like people arebetting and yelling at you if you don’t do good. Everybodyis happy.” Bartlett finished the day with five wins, four of them withhorses trained by Toscano. Among them was JKOwhatanite, a 3-year-old filly pacer who won the card’sfirst race by equaling the previous track record of 1:55.Her time, though, established the record for a femalepacer of any age. “She’s a good filly,” Bartlett said. “She did that prettyeasy. She just does everything she’s supposed to do. Weweren’t worried about how fast we were going, we justwanted to win the race. But that’s a big mile here.” JK Owhatanite has won five of six races this year, in-cluding the $197,634 Lismore at Yonkers in early June. As for his own big day, Bartlett said, “It was great. Driv-ing for Linda, she has great horses. It ain’t me, it’s thehorses, that’s for sure.” Also equaling the previous track record Friday was3-year-old colt pacer Denver Dolly, who won by 5-1/4lengths with driver George Brennan at the lines. Therewere six races won with times of less than 1:56 on Friday. Denver Dolly has won two of seven races this year andearned $21,077. He has six victories in 19 career starts. “That was a very impressive mile for him,” trainerGeorge Ducharme said. “This year, he’s been chasing thebetter colts, and he’s a step below them. I was hoping tomiss some of them here, and it worked out great. I hopethis will build his confidence and get him braver, so if hedoes get in with those other colts he’ll feel like he can becompetitive.” Also picking up wins Friday were American Rage (Jor-dan Stratton), Dreamlands Roxy (Jeff Gregory), All AboutKisses (Stephane Bouchard) and Party Dream (Bartlett). Abby Simpson won the Ladies Invitational for the sec-ond consecutive year. Simpson, the wife of driver BrandonSimpson, has 46 career victories to her credit. She guided Pembroke Joe Dunn from last place, morethan 13 lengths behind the leader, to the front with astrong stretch drive. Pembroke Joe Dunn, trained andowned by Scott Blackler, won by 2-1/4 lengths over JodyRiedel-driven Whitaker Blue Chip in 1:59.3. “He didn’t start the way I wanted him to,” Simpson said.“I was hoping to go to the front, but that’s why your planschange. But he got around traffic really nice. He’s a goodhorse. “It always feels good to win, but I just want to go out anddrive the best I can for the trainer and not embarrassmyself. It’s fun to get out there and drive with the ladies. Imet Brandon racing and it’s been a long time since I’vegotten to do this stuff, so doing it every now and then isreally fun.”

George Casale won the Catskills Amateur Drivers race, guiding Isn’t She Lovely to victory in 1:59.4. Thefree-legged pacing mare, trained by Steven Moore, ralliedfrom fifth place at the top of the stretch to win bythree-quarters of a length over the Eric Taddeo-drivenAdmirals Chance. “There was a lot of early speed, so I just laid back andhoped the horse could loop the field, which she did,”Casale said. “At three-quarters I had a lot of pace. She dugin every step of the way. It was all the horse. She’s perfectto drive.”

Leaving from post three, The Chancellor (Jason Bart-

lett) was away fifth as 2-1 choice Whata Winner (Jim

Doherty), Cold Winner (Dan Dube), invading Lorenzo

Dream (Cat Manzi) and Grain of Truth (Jeff Gregory) all

left the gate. A three-wide "Lorenzo" made the lead just

after a :27.4 opening quarter-mile, then found a :56.2 half.

Whata Winner moved from third, taking The Chancellor

with him toward the 1:25.4 three-quarters. Lorenzo Dream

clung to a short lead in early stretch, but he was about to

get swallowed up before the 1:55.2 mile marker. The

Chancellor, with the best trip, led the charge. He was

1 1/2 lengths better than Grain of Truth while getting the

1 1/16 miles in 2:02.3. Whata Winner--photoed for sec-

ond--KLM Express (Jim Marshall III) and Don'tellmywife

(George Brennan) completed the cashers. The Chancel-

lor, a 5-year-old Yankee Glide gelding trained by Julie

Miller for Andy Miller and Arden Homestead, returned

$28.60 (sixth choice) for his third win in nine seasonal

starts.
