    were no cookies left for

me to snag on my way toeach committee.

    However, you all soon

    made up for that- Ive

seen good debate in eachcommittee and some

    fantastic resolutions

passed. I was fortunateenough to chair Security

    Council for about 10

minutes, and I must say,I have never seen it thisharmonious. Clause after

    clause was passed,congratulations! SPC,

    GA, DISEC, ECOSOC,

    and EC have been

    wonderful too.

    In this world of

    delegates, chairs, resolutions,

    guys in poorly-fitted suits, apple

    juice breaks, social nights,

    committee acronyms, and

    unnecessarily formal and

    annoying MUN jargon, the

vitally important role of the note

    passer is completely forgotten.

    While these delegates debate

    world issues such as corruption,

poverty, Iraq, womens rights, and the allocation of world

    resources, this journalist

    asks: What about the note

    passer?

    Yes, this breed of

    MUN-goers is in a very

    precarious position, and is

    often over-looked as these

    so-called important issues

are debated. These notepassers stand between 52and 61, 49-80 kg, and

hold an attention span of 8-

12 minutes. They can bespotted in their distinctive

    black shirts, and can often

    be found in their various

    habitats: anywhere from

Coffee Day to the back of the

    gym texting their friends,

    MUN 4 8 hrs.. SAVE MEB4 I DIE.. :P lol c u 2nite.That is not to say the life of a

note passer is boring, but this

cry for help is one that shouldnot go unnoticed. Every 4

minutes, a note passer has amini break-down as he cannot

find the appropriate table. It is

a never-ending struggle of toomany notes to handle and

worn-out legs. And whatsworse? They dont even get

    invited to social night. Yet,

Although there havebeen a good number

    of sleepy delegates,they have been

    balanced out by

    eloquent and

    passionate delegates-our favorite kind.

So I hope all of youhave been having agood time, but even if

    you have not, Im sure

that will change comeSocial Night. Itsdefinitely looking to

    be a memorable night

with great food, greatmusic, and of course,

    great people.

    there are no proposals on

    this, no debate, no

    resolutions. And delegates

are able to sleep well at

night? I say nay to this.Stand up. Speak out.

    SAVE THE NOTE

    PASSER.

    Karna PrayagBy Samvitha Ram

    Karna Prayag, a well-

    known institution in

Chennai, gets its namefrom the character

    Karna in the

Mahabharata. The storygoes that Karnas motherwas forced to abandon

him, and he was raisedby a simple charioteer. It

    is said that through many

    tests and trials, Karna

grew up to be respectedby both armies in the

    Mahabharata. Similarly,

    Karna Prayag is an

    organization thatnurtures abandoned

    infants and babies. They

work towards givingeach one of their

    children an identity, by

    providing it with all the

legal documentsnecessary for it to have a

    proper education and

vocation. They alsoreach out to those

    childless couples that

desperately want toadopt one of the childrenas their own. Growing a

    little year by year, they

have now become one ofthe biggest adoption and

    childcare centers in

    Southern India. For more

    information about KarnaPrayag we encourage

you to visit their web site

    karnaprayag.org. TheAmerican International

    School has a very special

connection to KarnaPrayag since a graduate

    of the school was

    adopted from this very

    organization. So, the

    CHEMUN team has

    picked Karna Prayag as

the NGO it will lend itssupport to this year. It

    will host many

fundraising activities, including its traditional T-shirt sale in support of

    Karna Prayag, and will be

presenting the head of theorganization with a

    cheque during the

    opening ceremonies of

    CHEMUN 2011.

    he chair got so bo

Would you like me to sing you a lullaby?? Trust me I am so good at singing that people

cry when I sing because it is so good.

    After yesterdays intense

    lobbying, approvedresolutions were discussed

and amendments werediscussed in everycommittee. The General

    Assembly started with all the

    Delegates singing Happy

Birthday to their chair, WonJoon, who graciously bowed

    before taking roll call. Then,

    amendments were made to a

    resolution about tacklingcorruption submitted by

Libya. Also, as the delegatesentered this morning, theywere slightly flustered

    because all the placards had

been changed. In DISEC, all we noticed

    was the delegate of

    Bangladeshs pretty earrings

and Comoros cute fedora.Except for that, the session

was vaire dull. Sitting on the

front row, the delegate ofBrazil was all but sleeping.

We have to say, notes were

    just flying around the

committee (and we even sawone delegate in jeans-

    GASP).

SPC was, all in all, one ofthe most interesting sessions.

    In a committee of around

    50+ delegates, there were

barely 7 guys. The delegateof Finland seemed to be the

    most participative, with her

enunciated speeches and everpresent smile. The Delegate

    of Vietnam fell asleep, and

when the chair asked her tovoice her opinion about the

    resolution, she replied, The

    delegate urges all other

delegates to vote for theresolution if they like it.

Because she, personallywouldnt vote for it.In ECOSOC, most of the

    Delegates at the back were

    chewing gum (Yes, China and

Chile, we saw that!). TheChinese Delegate was literally

    distributing his pack of

    Wrigley. (Share some next

time, ok?) The Delegate ofMexico could barely keep her

eyes open through the session, but to be fair, the rest of thecommittee seemed quite

    awake.

    The Security Council is the

most vivid committee.Personally, we had the most

fun sitting there. Kudos! TheDelegates raised many Pointsof Order. The Delegates of

    Brazil and China seemed to

    argue about every miniscule

point. Amidst all the drama, the Delegates of Bosnia and

    Germany seemed to catch up

    on some sleep. Another

interesting thing that caughtour eye was the frantic hand

gestures of the Delegate ofUK. But the best part? Theyspent 20 minutes, discussing

    ONE CLAUSE.

So to sum up, although itseemed like nothing much

was going on, and that there

    were many people dazed and

    confused, there was some

lively debate, and were surepeople are having a great

    time.

The environment committee wasquite mundane. All we

    understood was that they were

    discussing fisheries!! Most of

the Delegates seemed to beyawning as they understood

nothing of what was being said.

    The notes were mainly about

MUN (=no flirting ) becausethe lady chair asked them to. So,

good job to the Delegates that

    listen to their chair.

Women and Children: The Double Dividend ofGender EqualityBy Shweta Patwardhan

    Girl with the Blue Scarf

Dear GWTBS,Yesterday, I was so pumped up for debate and I was really excited for my resolution to be

discussed. But yesterday, my whole delegation and I went out after the conference, and now

I can barely keep my eyes open! Im just so tired, GWTBS. Besides, I feel like Im alsomissing out on all the fun interactions going on between the delegates in my committee

during the breaks that we have. What suggestions do you have for me? How can I be awake

and participate in the debate, while still being able to go out with the people from my schoolafter debate?

Sincerely, In Need of Some ZZZs

    Dear In Need,

Oh my god! What a bad life you have. You get to debate all day and party all night? Oh, thehorror! Well, on a more serious note, I seriously dont understand why you are complaining.

If its only the tired-ness thats bumming you out, then I might have a few suggestions.First, try to come back at a reasonable hour, even if your MUN advisor has set a late curfew.

You can also try to NOT spend all your energy at parties Im not saying dont have fun,but maybe try to not dance like a crazy freak so much, and chill out with your friends over a

quiet dinner instead. Its not as boring and lame as it sounds, I promise. ;)

    Loads of Love, GWTBS

    that faces our world today,

    without realizing that we

    need to address other

underlying problem likegender inequality before we

can even think of tacklingsomething as complex asextensive poverty.

    The word feminist is

    now associated with beinguptight, pointlessly

    aggressive, and single. But

why can it not be associated

with anyone who wants abetter world?

    Men, women,

    children, everyone canbenefit from gender

    equality. Remember this

    when you debate this

    weekend.

    Our theme this year

is Women and Children:The Double Dividend of

Gender Equality. Thethought behind this theme is

    the idea that gender equalityand the well-being ofchildren go hand in hand;

    gender equality produces a

double dividend as itbenefits both women and

children. As UNICEFsState of the Worlds

Children puts it generallyhealthy, educated and

    empowered women have

    healthy, educated andconfident daughters and

sons, all of whom then grow

    to greatly contribute to their

families and countries.Gender equality is not only

    morally right because it

    affects 50% of the worlds

    population; it is also

    essential to human

progress and sustainabledevelopment. The theme is

    related to several of the

    Millennium Development

Goals (MDGs), such asgoals 3, 4, and 5- gender

    equality, child health, and

maternal health. But inreality, gender equality

    would also indirectly

contribute to the fulfillmentof other goals from poverty

    reduction, universal

    education, combating

    HIV/AIDS, etc. Many

people write off womensrights as an overdone issue.

But the reality is that when

50% of the worldspopulation is being

mistreated, the problemnever goes away. In MUN

    we talk about poverty, one

    of the biggest issues
