Month of February Highlights
Executive Board Meeting February 10, 2011
The month of January was slow, we only had a surplus of $492.
We are looking into replacing the bar floor with a non-skid tile. The paint is being pulled off when mats are lifted to clean, creating unsanitary conditions.
The board is looking into changing the wording on the associate applications so we may receive at least a partial payment while they are waiting to join the club. This will be non-refundable if they
refuse to join, or applied to their payment if they are able to join.
We are comparing quotes from Massey Pest Control and Bug Guard who we have now. Massey came in with a much lower quote and we want to make sure the services are the same before we think
of switching.
Tom Mayne informed the board that they will be sending out invoices to our advertisers and will be pulling the ads from the ones who have not paid.
Committee Reports
Membership Chairperson Marie Galluccio introduced 9 new members at the Feb. 16th General Meeting.
Health and Welfare: Chaplin Dino reported that 2 get well cards and 1 sympathy card was sent out.

Scholarships Chairperson Arlene Tobia reminded us that applications are due by March 15th. Applicants may live in Flagler, Volusia, or St. John Counties.
Door Greeters/Cashiers Chairperson Carol Minotti reported that all is going well. Thank you to all of her volunteers, and she is happy to report that whenever she calls to ask for help no one refuses.
Pot of Gold-Bridget Passarello explained to our new members how pot of gold works. At this time she has 7 numbers available.
Building and Grounds Chairperson Chuck Pizer reported that the beer coolers have been installed, the outside doors have been painted, they’ve installed more shelving, and are keeping up with every-
day maintenance. Chuck, Pete, Woody, and Roy would appreciate anyone who would like to come join them and help. They could use the extra hands.
Banquet Coordinator Virginia Esposito reported that Feb. had six outside affairs, March has four, April five, and we also have five set for Christmas. Virginia will be sending letters to past groups to
see if they wish to return and will be up-dating our website to include a banquet page.

CARNEVALE DI VENEZIA Cari Soci, Two hundred people attended the Carnevale di Venezia. It was a gala occasion. Many attendees wore costumes and/or masks. The lounge opened at 6:00pm and Chuck Piscitello and Sal Amuso received the guests as they arrived. The ballroom doors opened at 7:00pm and the symphonic music of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, the traditional Venetian music for Carnevale serenaded the guests as they entered the banquet hall. The ballroom chairs and tables were decorated in white and black. The table centerpieces were a mirrored plaque with large red crystal chalice containing a candle and red roses at the base. Mrs. Janet Sullivan donated the use of the chalices. On the walls, through out the hall, were pictures of Venetian masks and costumes and to the delight of all a constant display of Venetian masks and costumes were dis-played on a screen during the evening. Dinner consisted of an antipasto of miniature spanokopita and quiche cups along with sausage bread followed with insalata and wedding soup. The main courses were a selection of either swordfish Livornese, or rolled chicken breast with prosciutto, feta cheese and spinach. Vegetables were green beans with tomato and orzo with parmigiano cheese. Midway through the evening, the Heritage Committee presented its Bacchus Parade. Mike Aulicino led the parade by marching into the hall with the American flag. Tony Vastano followed him carrying the Venetian flag. Lou Barletta and Joe Abitante followed the flag bearers, pulling the Carrettino festooned with laurel branches. Seated within the Carrettino, was the Roman god Bacchus, played by Ernesto Bio. Ernesto wore a toga, a crown of laurel leaves, and held a chalice and bottle of Chianti in his hands, hailing the crowd as he was drawn around the hall. Behind the Carrettino were many attendees in costumes and masks sauntering in parade form greeting those seated with curtsies and bows. The music of Vivaldi filled the hall with joyous music accompanying the parade. Participants in the parade presented laurel leaves to the seated members.
THE LAUREL TREE The tradition of the use of laurel leaves is rather interesting. In ancient Greece and Rome, winners in Olympic Games, and other forms of competition were awarded with the privilege of wearing a crown of laurel leaves. Many statues of the Roman Emperors wear crowns of laurel leaves, for example on some ancient Roman coins is a laureate head of Julius Caesar. Our English word baccalaureate meaning the conferring of bachelor degrees at college graduation ceremonies refers to the laurel leaves. The Italian word for receiving a degree is laurare. In regards to the baccalaureate, Bacca may refer to Bacchus; however, the literature is not very clear on that point even though the Latin dictionary indicates Bacchus as the god of grape growing, wine and celebration. Nevertheless, other awards such as in the term poet lau-reate is indicative of a poet worthy to wear a crown of laurel leaves. Many recipes call for laurel leaf, usually one or two leaves, and the most available is the dried leaf. It is a powerful spice, too much and it will bitter the dish. The fresh leaf when crushed emits a unique aroma. Many also refer to the laurel leaf as bay leaf, both terms are correct, but bay leaf becomes confused with red bay leaf. Both have aromatic leaves and are used in cooking, however red bay leaf is Persea borbonia and different from the common laurel, which is Laurus nobilis, both, however are members of the laurel family (Lauraceae). Red bay leaf, a bush common to the south, is slowly fading from American forests due to a wilt disease of a non-native in-sect, the Red Bay Ambrosia Beetle.
Laurence Amuso Member Heritage Committee
Dear Members,
Another month has passed and our club continues to do well.
As we all know our club is over 30 years old and much of our equipment is outdated and must be replaced. Since our last newsletter we have replaced our beer coolers and installed new shelves in our bar area. We are now planning to complete the bar area by installing new skid-proof tile on the floor which will be supervised by our building & grounds committee. This past week we also had a breakdown in our walk-in refrigerator and a fan had to be replaced. We are also working on our grease pit and our pep tank system that is periodically inspected by the
City officials.
Thanks to Joe Renzo who donated heavy duty shelving for our storage room. Also our chair committee has been busy re-upholstering 17 more of our chairs.
Thanks to the chair committee and its new member, Ben Locastro.
Our socials are doing very well. Super Bowl Sunday was a great success. Everyone enjoyed the game and wonderful food. The event was chaired by Virginia
Esposito and Mickey Logemann.
As usual, Carnevale was one of the highlights of the year. Jane Aulicino and all the Heritage Committee deserve much praise for all their hard work decorating
the ballroom, taking them all down when the event was finished and planning the wonderful menu with Chef Dan.
Bernice Groeger, our editor, who had notified us that she was retiring as of the end of February has since agreed to stay on until the end of May. We are still
looking for a Festa chairperson
My sincere thanks to Joe Minotti, who although he has left office, is still very involved with our club. Joe with his assistant Vice-President Lois Big Mountain, count every penny that comes into our club and handles all the deposits. I can’t think of any one more honest than Joe. He also is the MC of Karaoke every Tuesday night and assists
in setting up the ballroom for bingo every Monday. He also sets up the lounge area every Tuesday with our Receptionist Barbara Brancaccio.
I would also like to thank Fanny Moffa, Edith Santomenno and Felicia Donato, who continue week after week handling the ticket sales for our various events. Three great gals. Many thanks also to Jenny Martin, Sandi Ostresh and Felicia Donato for selling 50/50 every Friday night. As members we owe our gratitude to all these
members who are vital to our club.
At our last General Meeting. Member Joe Abitante made a motion that was seconded by John LaCorte to the raise the percentage of Associate Members, to 40 percent. This motion will be discussed and voted on at our next General Meeting on March 16th. Please make every effort to attend this meeting and give your support to
this motion. It is vital to the well being and success of the future of our club.
Our Tuesday and Friday nights continue to do well but need more participation. Our Chef Dan has requested that our members tell him of any suggestions for
future menus and favorite recipes and he will consider them. All this month’s menus were recommendations by many of our members.
Please be sure to read the letter from Your Board of Directors on page 3. This letter explains our finances and many of our future needs. This is very important
to the welfare of our club.
Looking forward to seeing you at our club very soon. Until next month God bless you all.
