Saturday 19 th May 2012 President’s Pen Just a short one this week, Saturday night with the mayor was very encouraging with regards to the meeting with council on Monday. Both parties are think along the same lines & I believe it will now be a reality. There is, however, still a lot of work to be done in getting Council to accept our proposal & then we can put a time line on the project - but as far as I am concerned it will happen. The girls 1s had a convincing win against Hale, Riverside Lions will be the next bench mark - so go get them girls, hit them hard! I think you are on track for want we want to achieve this year, so keep it going. The boys 1s went down by one goal again; I do not think I would like to be at training this week. The Frat party went off without a hitch, lots of fun was had by all & I would like to thank everyone for being reasonably responsible, cleaning up & vacating the club when told. If you do not respect the wishes of the club, you can be assured you will not get another chance, so thank you for making this one successful. the club benefited & everyone had fun. Thank you all for the one minute silence for Lizzie & her family over the weekend. Steve McEntee President 1

PREMIER LEAGUELadies Willow Bridge League vs Hale (Won 6 - 1)Best: S. Bowyer, S. Gale, A. McNessGoals: S. Bowyer (3), S. Gale, E. Stratton, C. SurmanToday we honoured the memory of Lizzie Watkins. A terrific game of hockey followed with each and every one of the girls up to the challenge. A couple of goals by half time eased the pressure on the scoreboard but there was still work to be done. The defensive effort all over the field produced the turnovers we were looking for and with Sarah chipping in for a hat trick of goals, a 6-1 win was the final result. Great effort girls in what has been a reflective week for all. "Immortality is to live your life doing good things, and leaving your mark behind". Brandon Lee

Ladies Promotion 2 vs Hale 2 (Won 2 - 0)Best: D. Dravnieks, L. Watson, C. Ferguson/J. LeachGoals: S. Billingham, J. LeachA great well fought out game, girls. Strong play by our defence kept the game up into our attack. Even with regular player rotation the team was able maintain its open play and utilise the entire width of the field.

Mens Provisional 3 GoldBest: M. Welten, J. Palmer, J. TateGoals: J. TateOh how we love the Sunday hangover games. Thankfully we had Mitch cleaning up in defence as well as forward to keep us on the attack. Good game overall, could've had plenty more goals but good to see a reward for the forward pressure eventually.

METROPOLITAN LEAGUEMens Metro 1 vs Vic Park (Lost 1 - 5)Best: B. Hancock, B. Joss, M. DevesonGoals: B. RushtonThe Vic Park hoodoo continues. I don't know how they expect us to play on a pitch that is freshly mowed, divot free and you can see the lines - it’s a travesty! Special mention the Mr Rushton for getting the M1's goal scoring Gorilla off the back, I can't wait for 2 years down the track when you score your next one.

Ladies Metro 1 vs Mods/Harleys (Won 3 - 1)Best: L. Brearley, H. Doyle, M. Glover/J. CoadThe game got off to a slow start for both sides but improved as the half progressed. Both sides had opportunities but it was Melville that was able to score prior to the half time break. We had much more of the play in the second half and had many "near misses" in the goals. The perseverance paid off and Lynda was able to score 2 more goals to Mods/Harleys 1 which resulted in the final result 3-1. Backline defense was solid once again with Leah taking out best player for the second week in a row.

Mens Metro 3 Gold vs UWA (Lost 2 - 3) 2012-05-08Best: P. Morris, D. Wake, D. KiddGoals: P. Morris, J. WakeWhat a game! By far the best we have seen in a while, we used the field and really focused on using each other for the short passes. Thanks again to Wayne for filling in as keeper and for Paul, finaly scoring a goal!!!Ever reliable, Matty Willis provided the entertainment as he raced off just before half time for a quick romp in the bushes with his girlfriend - Thanks Bec for distracting him for the rest of the game.....

Mens Metro 3 Gold vs Kalamunda (Lost 0 - 1) 2012-05-12Best: D. Kidd, T. McEntee, M. WillisAn unfortunate game after the way we played last week. We had some strong shots on goal but couldn't seem to get it past the keeper, though as the afternoon wore on the sun and we couldn't seem to bring it together in the last half before conceeding an unfortunate goal.Again, thanks Wayne for filling in as keeper, and to Matty Willis - his on field outburst has surely won us a few beers. Tim, ever the one to keep his cool as he is all about his "Zen" this year, managed to pull Matty up before destroying one of the opposition....again!

VETERANSMens Masters Midweek vs Fremantle (Won 2 - 1)Best: A. Etelaaho, M. Jensen, M. StarlingGoals: M. O'Sullivan, A. StarlingAwesome result against a team we hadn't beaten since early in 2009. Its getting harder and harder to find something positive to print about the lamentable Crowey match after oh so dismal match, so I'm just going to say nothing ...

Ladies Masters 2 vs Subs (Drew 1 - 1)Best: J. Manning, D. Goundrey/L. O'SullivanGoals: D. GoundreyNot the best we have played. We didn't seem to get it together until the last 20 minutes. A lot of unforced errors. Good goal Dehlia, from a good pass from Leanne, that’s our usual style girls - let’s stay with that.

Mens Masters 40-1 vs Kalamunda (Won 3 - 1)Best: A. Scanlon, J. Cooke, D. LoffellGoals: J. Cooke, B. Potter, S. WillettA must-win game led from the front by Statue. Great team effort all around. However, we're all a bit bemused by the fact Crowey felt a need to replace this chest guard when all his current equipment looks brand new and we're all fairly sure have never been used to stop a hockey ball ...

Mens Masters 40-2 vs John XXIII (Lost 1 - 2) Goals: P. ChristianWe slowly creep up on a win as the weeks move forward. Some good passages of play developing and the forward line starting to work well. Thanks to Mark Rayfield for stepping up and playing goals for us. Great job. Some really good overhead clearances. The defense held up well with only a couple of short corners conceded. The forwards have peppered the area around the goals for the last few games. Fairly soon it will all come together.........

Mens Masters 40-4 vs Kalamunda (Drew 1 - 1)Best: S. Walker, G. Singh, S. OldeGoals: S. OldeAgain, the team settled in well from the start and had most of the play in the first half. Another week & another great goal from Shane Olde.Kalamunda lifted in the second half & scored to level the game.A great team effort & unlucky not have taken the win with our second goal being disallowed.

Mens Masters 50-1 vs Fremantle (Won 3 - 0)Best: B. Robinson, P. Matthews, K. Harper/C. HowellGoals: R. Chesny, K. Harper, C. HowellOur strategy meeting held minutes before the game proved to be useful as we all played according to the PLAN. The tighter defence with Andy aiding Jenno and Waldo, mopped up many loose balls before they become dangerous. BR in the middle was strong but when he fell to his knees at one stage, our hearts were in our mouths for a moment until we realised his pain was due to some of his anatomy feeling like they were in HIS mouth. Harps was on target in front of the goals with two that scored and a couple that went very close. Our mid field played smart and used the ball well and we honoured the 1st pass. It seems like we have our mojo back. Hope Whip gets back to full health soon. Thanks to Graeme for helping out and fitting in so well.

Mens Masters 50-3 vs Blades (Won 5 - 3)Best: A. Wood, L. Welten, F. WilliamsGoals: S. McEntee (3), F. Williams, A. WoodOur first half was very quick off the mark with a goal scored in the first minute but from there it went down hill. We weren’t playing as a team, the forwards were too high and as a result the half back came forward leaving the full backs with three and four attacking forward to deal with. The second half was a great reversal with some very good passing and lot of traffic going down the right side with passes breaking up the Blades defences. Once we moved the ball wide and around the back in defence our gamed flowed much better overall.

Mens Masters 60 vs Riverside Lions (Won 6 - 0) 2012-05-05Best: T. Parker, R. Domingo, G. Riley/P. HallGoals: R. Domingo (3), T. Parker (2), B. CaddA terrific turnaround from previous weeks to make our first win for the season a big one, against good opposition. Through improved composure and control, we dominated possession for most of the game, with good run to position and well directed passing. A bit of a fresh start, and an excellent confidence booster. Let's keep it going guys.

Mens Masters 60 vs YMCC (Won 2 - 1) 2012-05-12Best: T. Parker, J. Smith, G. RileyGoals: P. Speyer, T. RushtonA hard fought game in which we were continually under pressure, and didn't spread our play as well as we'd like. Two great opportunistic goals, one from Tom in the first half, the other from Piet in the second, showed the importance of making good position, and were enough to secure a win. Well done guys. Overall, plenty of room to play smarter, but still a great team effort to stick at it all game and come away with the points.

Girls 11/12 Pool 1a vs Rockingham (Won 6 - 0)Best: G. Bowyer, A. Clark, G. WadeGoals: G. Wade (3), A. Fullarton, A. McNess, K. SilveyWorking on our goal scoring and being able to use the right side of the stick proved to be the winners this week! Some great individual goal scoring efforts, slick skills and team work was great to see. Good work girls. Aimee you may want to practice your high 5s!!!

Boys 11/12 Pool 2a Maroon vs UWA (Lost 0 - 6)Best: C. Noone, J. Brooker, B. GauciAnother game where the boys failed to convert opportunities and allowed late goals that didn't reflect their overall effort. The game was played in great spirit with both teams displaying excellent sportsmanship. Let's see some shots hit the back of the net next week.

Boys 11/12 Pool 2a White vs Mazenod (Lost 0 - 14) Best: S. Elston, R. Ayris, R. DayThis has been a difficult week for the team with some hesitation regarding whether we would play. Our target was to achieve a scoreline below 15 goals and we just got there. An excellent start to the game holding Mazenod for some 5 to 10 minutes before they scored . Great hard work from Andrew in the centre assisted by Samuel, Adam and Nick. Most of the game was played in our defensive half testing out the whole back line including our gallant goalie Rowan. Other good work in the back line Sean, Ryan, jai and James. There were times where we showed ability to match the pace and game structure of a superior team, in the end our defensive marking was far to loose and they had plenty of space and time to score. Finally a excellent workout, well done boys.

Girls 11/12 Pool 2Best: S. Matthews, E. Wilson, C. McCartneyGoals: S. MatthewsMuch better second half girls, We managed to find our passing skills and also the back of the net.We need to work on short passing out of defence, using the sidelines and not the middle. Overall a decent effort, up against a very good strong UWA team.

Boys 9/10A vs UWA (Lost 2 - 6)Best: Jordan Rutigliano, Henry Edwards, Jamie RossGoals: H. Edwards, A. RanfordAfter a great start to the season the boys were brought back to earth with a resounding defeat at the hands of a well drilled Uni team. We managed to hold them to 1-1 at half time but a couple of early second-half injuries to Ash and Lachlan took their toll and we could not hold out the waves of attacks from Uni with a few late goals laeving the boys licking their wounds. Two wins from three outings is a pretty start to the season but there is plenty of room for improvement. A big lift in intensity is required if this is to be a successful season.

Girls 9/10A vs UWA (Lost 1 - 4)Best: M. Sader, N. Matthews, B. Lawrence/A. WatsonGoals: M. MillerA very tough game against UWA. Our opposition played a fast game and reacted quickly to turns in play. We fought very hard, but found it difficult to create space and penetrate their defence. Monique Miller broke her drought and scored our only goal off a short corner.

Boys 9/10A ReserveBest: M. Dixon, C. Appleton, J. TemplemanGoals: R. BeddoesOur Melville boys started the game really well and dominated the first half. A great goal from a short corner to Richard Beddoes had us with a 1-0 lead at half time. In the second half we again had a lot of the play, however let a goal through half way through the 2nd half. At 1 all it was a fairly even tussle, however right on the siren UWA scored a second goal. It was a tough 2-1 loss in a game the boys could have won. They are improving each week and the first win is just around the corner.

Girls 9/10A Reserve vs Victoria Park (Lost 0 - 5)Best: K. Wynhorst, T. Stephens, K. GauciThe girls worked hard this week against one of the strongest teams in the grade. There was a real sense of endeavour and commitment as we broke into attack. The defence were under pressure for most of the game and the team work to clear the ball away from the circle was great to see. With a couple of injuries during the game it was also great to have the support or Eliane, Tory and Trilby to help out in a team which is improving in each game.

Girls 9/10B GoldNo report

Boys 9/10C vs Whitfords (Lost 1 - 7)Best: R. Breuer, M. Utjesinovic, S. ReynoldsThe boys worked hard against a strong opposition and played an effective second half where they halted the opposing team's goal scoring. After reminders from the coach they improved play when they remembered to come in for a second tackle. His advice is never give up and keep coming back for more! A fantastic goal was scored by Milorad when he performed a reverse side hit to score. Congratualations to Ryan Breuer who was selected as fairest and best.

Boys 7/8A vs Westside Wolves (Lost 0 - 4)Best: A. Rayfield, S. Cocks, K. PotterTurning up to a game not switched on has cost us again! It is however not about the the amount of times you get knocked down but the amount of times that you get back up. So far we are 3 hits and 3 KO's. We can do better than this! Thanks to the parents for their continual support Thanks also to Mitch Tate for filling in

Girls 7/8A vs Wolves (Won 2 - 1)Best: Marler, Kirk, HopkinsonGoals: M. Hagen, A. MarlerThe girls were up against a very good team and took it to them all of the first half. This week we had real desire for the ball and pressured them as much as they did to us. A key difference was the way the girls kept sticks on the ground when hassling so we managed to get a lot of turnover ball. Well done to all the girls for the effort and determination.

Girls 7/8A Reserve vs Joondalup (Lost 1 - 3)Best: E. Hardbottle, A. Ross, K. OlszewskiGoals: E. HardbottleFrom the onset the girls knew this would be a very tough match but that didn't seem to daunt them. The umpires were strict and the ground hard to find but they kept their heads up and managed to score a goal against the top team, a first for any team this season. After a difficult first half the girls held their own and prevented the opposition from scoring any goals in the second half. Good work from the whole team. Thanks to Neasa from the 5/6's for filling in on a hard game.

Boys 7/8B Gold Maroon vs Canning (Won 2 - 0)Best: L. Deaville, N. Deluca, M. WidgerGoals: B. Delaney, J. LukanGreat game and a great win! Well done boys, you're really starting to pull it together and play as a team. Your passing shots were good and accurate, your trapping was precise and this all showed in the score. Keep this effort going and the only way is up!

Boys 7/8B Gold White vs Mazenod (Lost 2 - 5)Best: B. Cadle, M. Scally, S. ButlerGoals: T. Dickson, J. ParkerOur first loss, but we can all be proud of our effort against a team of Giants from Mazenod - what do they feed those boys? We played the better hockey but they took their chances - an area for us to work on. Personal highlight was Preston's one on one tackle with their biggest giant. Preston put his body on the line in a front on tackle to prevent a shot on goal, and the result, after Preston picked himself up and put his glasses back on, was a free hit to us and a limping giant who had to leave the field.Warms the Cockles.Next week guys- great performance.

Girls 7/8B Gold vs AW Reds (Lost 0 - 1)This was a really good game to watch with Melville showing improvement and growing in confidence each week. We ran hard to contest the ball and made determined tackles throughout a very even match against AW Reds. While our defence came under pressure at times, the girls should be pleased with a solid performance.

Girls 7/8C vs Southern River (Lost 1 - 2) Both teams where matched evenly and a good game was played by both sides.Bailey scored our one goal and Ella our goalie stopped a lot of goals going through. Our team was short by two players and a big thank you to Kayla O'Sullivan and Ciara Thompson for coming and helping out.

Boys 5/6A vs Kalamunda (Won 4 - 2)Best: M. Tate, D. Forbes, T. HarveyGoals: M. Tate (2), A. Ladhams, R. BrightA hard fought game this week from the start and there were many tense moments for the supporters on the sidelines. Melville had the majority of the play in the first half but were struggling to find the right combination to finish off with the goals. Half time saw some motivating words from Craig and this had everyone thinking about hockey and what their job on the field was. It was fantastic to see everyone holding their positions and more importantly manning up on the opposition. All of a sudden everything fell into place and two quick goals were scored. All credit to the players for following the instructions at half time. In the end a great team effort and congratulations on a well deserved win.

Girls 5/6A vs WASPS (Won 3 - 0)Best: L. Mellor, A. Haigh, A. BellGoals: A. Bell (2), N. FlynnFirst of all, well done to the girls. Here's to our first win of the season. This week really saw us gel as a team and move as more of a unit. We had some really impressive runs down our wings and through the middle, with everyone passing and linking so well. Again, the girls in defence really stood strong and stopped all of the attacks that came their way- it was especially nice to see us using our halfbacks and going wide like we practised in training. Everything during the game was a definite improvement from last week, so girls, keep up the good work!

Boys 5/6A Reserve vs Lions Gold (Drew 0 - 0)Best: Great Team Effort BoysAnother great defensive effort today. We were again slow out of the blocks, with Lions Gold dominating the first half. I think we only ventured into our attacking D once for the half. But we awoke from our slumber and were fantastic in the 2nd. You have gotta love the boys fighting spirit. An almost maybe goal from Daniel right at the end would have been a great reward for our great defensive work. It’s great to see the Grads stepping up. Kamikaze Callum tackles like a fearless warrior. It’s that great endeavour that will see this team succeed as the season goes on.

Boys 5/6B Gold vs Kalamunda (Won 2 - 0)Best: H. Watkins, J. John, O. SpearGoals: B. Whitelaw, H. WatkinsWhat a difference a week makes. There was plenty of action at both ends of the pitch, but our defence was solid and our attack fast. The boys were focused and determined; they all displayed great individual skills and the teamwork was excellent. This resulted in two superb goals by Ben and Harry and our first win for the season. Keep it up boys, well done!

Girls 5/6B Gold WhiteBest: E. Quattrini, C. Forbes, E. RollsGoals: C. Forbes, E. QuattriniWell done girls on a great win. The first half was a little bit slow but the second half saw Chloe and Eva score fanastic goals. They were supported well by the other forwards. Great to see a bit more team work this week.

Boys 5/6 Regional Gold Maroon vs Wolves (Lost 0 - 4)Best: O. Sanchez, M. Morard, J. GrimstonAnother tough game against a very strong Wolves side! With 3 players unavailable, it was always going to be a difficult task. The boys defended strongly in the first half only conceding a goal in the final 30 seconds. Although fatigue set in the second half, the boys showed great determination and battled to the final whistle. For a team that hasn’t played together before, and in some cases never played hockey before, the boys have very quickly developed great teamwork. The determination to never give up and the encouragement of each other is remarkable for players this young. That first win is not far away.A special thanks to Max and Kayne who came up from grads to help us out.

After an evenly matched first half the boys came out and dominated the second half to win the game. The boys followed the game plan which created two great goals. I can see that we are going to be a respectable team this season. Let's make sure we take the strength and work rate into next weeks game. Good win boys!
