Inchildhood,Hewaslikedbyeveryone,because
He was always kind, forgiving all offences from
playmates, never requiting evil with evil. Andmoreinschool,Heentertainedotherpupilsbygiv
ing themsweets,whichHe tookoutfromanappar
entlyemptybag,materializingthem.
At the age of 14, He told His parents that He
wouldnotgo toschoolanymore,becauseHeknew
everything.And thatHewas a reincarnationof the
wellknownMuslimsaint,SaiBaba(BabameansFa
ther inSanskrit), from theplace calledShirdi.And
thatHewanted to leaveHisparentshome inorder
todedicateHislifetohelpingpeople,preachingthe
TruthaboutGodandabouttheWayofattainmentof
theHighestFreedominMergencewithHim.
His years of childhood and adolescence are de
scribed in detail in a remarkable book of Samuel
Sandweiss [4]; everyone interested can find this in
formation there. I onlywant to notice, in order to

thatSathyaSaiBaba, living in theshaivisticpartly

SathyaSaiBaba
In reality,He is completelydifferent.He is the

Souls,whichHetouchesinsuchaway,canhearHisprecepts,instructions,piecesofadvice.Theycan
doitifthey,asconsciousnesses,arepureandsubtle
enough,iftheyarecapableofattuningthemselvesto
theperceptionofHim,forgettingabouttheproblems
ofthematerialplane.
Thereare3stagesofconcentration,SathyaSaiBaba says. At the first stage,you receiveMymes
sages in the form ofmentalwaves.At the second
stage,youcanhearMyvoice.Andat the third,you
canhearandseeMe.Ifyousucceed in thepurifica
tionof theconsciousnesses,youmovefromstage to
stage.
Whenthemindismotionlessandsilent,one
canhearthevoiceofGod.Anyonewhoisabletopu
rify themindfromanxiety,agitations,and thoughts
canattunethemselvestothevoiceofGodinside.[4]

IcametorestoretheStraightPathtoGod![1].
HisTeachings
HedoesnotsaythatHisTeachingsarenew.His
Teachings are just onemoremanifestation, for the
contemporaryconditionsontheEarth,oftheDivine
Teachingswhichhavebeenmanytimesimpartedto
people by God through His Messengers. These
Teachingsarecalled inSanskritSanathanaDharma
the Eternal Law. Sanathana Dharma is the
motherofallreligions,allethicalcodes,andalllaws
oftheuniverse,saysSathyaSaiBaba[7].
He Sathya Sai Baba is theAvatar of our
days.Hesays thatthoughallconceivablepowersof

ingtomakehappyeveryonewithoutdistinction,be
causeeveryone
has
their
own
personal
destiny
(karma)createdinthepastbytheirowngoodorbad
thoughtsanddeeds.Byourpresentdeedswecreate
ourfuturedestinies.
Inorder toescapefrom theabyssofearthlysuf
fering,itisnecessarytoliveinloveforGodandall
livingbeings,
including
creative
love
service
to
other
people.Theservicetopeople,whichconsistsinhelp
ing them in their positive evolution, is service to
God.
Themainenemiesofman, leading toaccumula
tion of negative karma, are the wrongly directed
mind and uncontrollable emotional sphere withdominatingegotisticorcoarseemotions.
Mancanovercometheseobstaclesbystrengthen
ingfaith,bydirectingthemindtowardDivinity,and
byusing spiritualpractices,which, firstof all,nor
malizetheemotionalsphereandhelptolearnhowto
controlthemindandconsciousness.
Butthemind,assuch,isnotanenemyofmanat
all. On the contrary, it is an embryo of wisdom
(jnana) and should be developed in everypossible
wayasananalyzingandcreativefunctionofthecon
sciousness.

cererepentanceallsinscanbewashed.GodsMercy
isresponsive.
If
He
has
awish
to
forgive,
nothing
can prevent this In spite of past sins, if there is
deep remorse and love for God, then all sins get
washedandthenatureofmanbecomesclean.Tobe
afraid that thiswillnothappen isaweakness.God
hasunlimitedcompassion;lookforHisloveandyou
willfindforgiveness![2].
The most important spiritual practice is the
searchofonesown imperfections andweaknesses,
andmakingattemptsonriddingoneselfofthem,be
comingclosertoPerfection[6].
Forstrengtheningtheorientationofthemindto
wardGod, Sathya SaiBaba recommends using thetechniqueoffrequentrepetitionofGodsnameand
participatingindivineworshipswithsingingpraise
toGod.
Gainingoffaithisthefirststep.Thenextstepin
this direction is love forGod.But how canpeople
fall in lovewith theOneWhom theydonotknowyet?This iswhyDivineTeacherscome to theEarth
to help people; the Unmanifest reveals Itself in a
formmanifested for people.Love for themanifest,
personifiedaspectofGodismoreconvenientforin
carnatepeople.
But people should also understand that SathyaSaiBabaisnotonly inHisbody:Heiseverywhere,
whereverHeisneeded.Therefore,itisnotnecessary

togo toHisashram inorder to talkwithHim; it is
possibletotalkwithHimrightfromyourhome.2
SathyaSaiBabateachesthatallpeoplehaveonlyoneGod.And theymustnotdivide themselvesbe
causeof thevariationsof theirbeliefs.Leteveryone
worshipOneUniversalGod using their traditional
variationsofworship.
What reallydividespeople isnot thevariations
offaith,butthelevelsofthespiritualculture.Imagine for example, says Sathya Sai Baba addressing
malestudentsofacollege,thataccordingtotheprin
cipleof equalityof allpeopleyoumarry aMuslim
girlwho isused toeatingmeat.Whatwillhappen?
Conflictsanddiscord?
ButSathyaSaiBabadoesnotwantpeople tobe
atenmitywitheachotherbecauseofdifferences in
nutrition:letsecularpeopleeatmeat.Butifyouwalk
thespiritualPath,thentheethicalaspectofnutrition
hastobeobservedimpeccably![2].
ItisnotpossibletocometoGodwithoutpossess
ingperfect
love,
because
He
Himself
is
Loveand lets
inonlythosesimilartoHim.Andthemainprinciple

plantsandanimalstoDivineMessengers.3
Concerningusingfishforfood,SathyaSaiBabanotesthattheseanimalsalsodieinsuffering.
OnceSathyaSaiBabasentagroupofHisdisci
ples to live in themountains inmonasticseclusion.
Thepurposeof this seclusionwasmeditative train
ing.Andinorderthatdisciplesdidnotdistractthem
selves from this trainingby seeking food,He gavethem a jug inwhich they could find enough food
materialized byHim every day.Whatwas in their
menu? Rice, vegetables, beans, fruit, juices, and
before night (before going to bed) everyone had a
glassofmilk.[1]
Killingfree nutrition is favorable for purifying
themindandconsciousness.Ifonegetsupearlyand
goestobedearly,thisalsocontributestopurification
of the mind and consciousness. The second thing
thataneophyte inreligionshoulddo is torefuse to
concentratethemindonnegativetraitsofotherpeo
ple.EachpersonispotentiallyGod.SeeGodineveryone.LoveeveryoneasthemanifestationofGodfor

People differ by the qualities of the personal
ego,theI.

In particular, there are deeply fallen, degraded
souls,who like to do evil. They can do evil even
withoutany
reward.
This
is
their
nature:
they
are
like
amoth thatgnawsand tears thingsnomatterwhat
theyare;itequallygnawsaragandanexpensivesari
[8].
But even such people are used by God in the
general process of the Evolution of consciousness.
Fromtheir
example,
other
people
can
learn
not
to
be
like them and thus can know both good and evil.
And theywillbeable,bypushing themselvesaway
from evil, towalk thePath of good towardPerfec
tion, towardMergencewithGod.Oneshouldknow
both:whatkindofpersononemustnotbeandwhat
kindof
person
one
must
be.
It
would
be
difficult
to
knowgoodifonedoesnotknowevil.
EvilpeopleareusedbyGodalsoforcorrectionof
the development of true sadhakas (spiritualwarri
ors).Inparticular,inthiswayGodremindssadhakas
about the approachingdeath, and this allows them
notto
relax
excessively
on
the
Path.
Death and God are the most important land
marksforallincarnatepeople,saysSathyaSaiBaba.
Evilpeopledoom themselves tohellandsuffer
ing in thenext incarnations.However, they, too,are
given a chance for salvation: to reform and repent.
Repentanceisconsciousremorsethatleadstoliberationfromthevices.

Concerningtheethicalselfcorrection,SathyaSai
Babasaysthefollowing[8]:
Thosewho seek bliss in theAtman should notrunafterthejoysofsenseobjects.
Justasabody thathasnobreath isuselessand
begins to rot and stink, similarly life without the
Truth isuselessandbecomes thestinkingabodeof
strifeandgrief.
Believe that there is nothing greater than the
Truth,nothingmoreprecious,nothing sweeter,and
nothingmorelasting!
TheLordwho isSathyagrantsHisdarshan (an
opportunitytocontemplateHim)tothoseoftruthful
speechandlovingheart.
Keep undiminished kindness toward all beings
andthespiritofselfsacrifice.
Youmustalsopossesscontrolover the indriyas,
anunruffledcharacterandnonattachment.
Bealwayswatchfulagainstthefollowingsins:1)
speaking falsehood, 2) speaking ill of others, 3)
backbiting, 4) talking toomuch, 5)killing, 6) adul
tery,7)theft,8)drinkingintoxicants,9)eatingflesh,
10) sexual cravings, 11) anger, 12)greed,13) earthly
attachments, 14) impatience, 15)hatred, 16) egoism,
17)pride.
Firstgiveuptheeviltendencytofeelenviousat
theprosperityofothersandthedesiretoharmthem.
Be happy that others are happy! Sympathize with

thosewhoare inadversityandwish for theirpros
perity.ThatisthemeansofcultivatingloveforGod.
Patienceisthestrengthwhichmanneeds!
Thoseanxious to live in joymustalwaysbedo
inggood!
Oneshouldnevergivereply inswearwords.Be
atagreatdistancefrom them; this isforyourgood.
Break off all relations with people who use such
words!
Seekthecompanyofgoodmen,evenatthesacri
ficeofyourpositionandlife.ButbeprayingtoGod
toblessyouwith thediscriminationneeded todis
tinguishbetweenthegoodmenandthebad.Forthis,
youmustendeavorwiththeintellectgiventoyou.
Thosewhoconquerstatesandearnearthlyfame
arehailed asheroes;butonly thosewhohave con
quered the indriyas are heroes who must be ac
claimedastheconquerorsoftheuniverse.
Whatever acts, good or bad, man may do, the
fruitsofthemfollowhimandwillneverstoppursuinghim.
Greed yields only sorrow; contentment is best.
Thereisnohappinessgreaterthancontentment!
The tendency tomakeharm shouldbeplucked
out by the roots! If allowed to exist, itwill under
minelifeitself!

Bearwith fortitude both loss and grief! Try to
achievejoyandgaininthefuture!
From thismoment on, avoid allbadhabits!Donotdelay,donotpostponebusinessesforthefuture:
itwillnotcontributetotheslightestbenefit.
Tryas faraspossiblewithinyourmeans tosat
isfytheneedsofthepoor,whoreallyliveinpoverty.
Sharewith themwhateverfoodyouhaveandmake
themhappyatleastthatmoment.
Whatever you feel should not be done to you,
avoiddoingsuchthingstoothers.
For faults and sins committed in ignorance, re
pent sincerely; trynot to repeat the faults and sins
again!PraytoGodtoblessyouwiththestrengthand
thecourageneededtosticktotherightPath!
Donotallowanything tocomenearyou,which
willdestroyyoureagernessandenthusiasmforGod.
Lackofeagernesswillcausethedecayofthestrength
ofman.
Yieldnottocowardice!Donotgiveupbliss!
Donotswellwithpridewhenpeoplepraiseyou!
Donotfeeldejectedwhenpeopleblameyou!
If among your friends one hates another and
startsaquarrel,donotattempttoinflamethemmore
andmake them hate each othermore!On the con
trary, try with love and sympathy to restore their
formerfriendship.

Insteadofsearchingforothersfaults,searchfor
yourown faults!Uproot them, throw themoff! It is
betterto
find
one
fault
of
yours
than
to
find
tens
of
hundredsoffaultsinothers!
Ifyoucannotorwillnotdoanygooddeed,then
atleastdonotconceiveandcarryoutanybaddeed.
Whateverpeoplemaysayaboutyour faults that
youknowarenotinyou,donotgetupset!Asforthe
faults that are inyou,youmust try to correct themyourself,beforeotherspointthemouttoyou.
Donotharborangerorbitternessagainstpersons
whopointoutyourfaults;donotretort,pointingout
the faults of those persons themselves, but show
yourgratitudetothem!
Trying to point out to people their faults is a
greatmistake!
Itisgoodifyouknowyourfaults;itisbadifyou
searchforfaultsinothers.
Wheneveryougetalittleleisure,donotspendit
in talking about all and sundry, but utilize it inmeditatingonGodorindoingservicetoothers.
Onlythebhakta(theonewholovesGod)under
stands the Lord; only the Lord understands the
bhakta.Others cannotunderstand them.So,donot
discussmatters relating to theLordwith thosewho
arenotbhaktas.
If anyone speaks to you on any subject having
understood itwrongly, do not think of hiswrong

opinionsbut grasp only the good and the sweet in
whathesays.
Ifyourearthlydesiresdonotgetfulfilled,donotblameitontheloveofGod:thereisnorelationship
betweensuchdesiresandtheloveofGod!
Ifyourmeditationdoesnotprogressproperly,do
notgetdispirited!Whensuchfeelingscome,seekfor
yourflaws!
Itisonlywheninyourdailyconductyoubehave
automatically according to these rules, thatyou can
perceivetheDivineprincipleveryeasily!Therefore,
holdontothesemaximsfirmly!
However,SathyaSaiBabanotes that all ethical
teachings canbe expressed in one short formula of
Vyasa:Help4ever,hurtnever!.
Theultimate taskofeachmanconsists incogni
tion of the Higher Self, which is the Atman, Pa
ramatman, the Creator. But for this purpose the
lowerself,whichmanifestsitselfasegocentrismand
whichis
created
by
the
mind,
must
be
eliminated.
Themind in this context is a part of the con
sciousnesscapturedbyearthlydesires.
Desires are not thoughts. Thoughts become de
sireswhentheysubmergedeeplyintoobjects.

Desires directed toward earthly objects cause
pleasureandsuffering.Butifadesireisdirectedto
wardGod,
then
it
gives
bliss!

Theabilitytothinkcorrectlyhastobedeveloped
through the earthly affairs. Then it can be trans
formed intoa functionof thebuddhi.For thispur
pose, thetentaclesof theconsciousness (indriyas)
shouldberedirectedfromtheobjectsofthematerial
world,even
the
best
ones,
toward
the
Divine
Con
sciousness. The thinking of such progressively de
velopingpeople inall theiraffairs rises toa funda
mentallydifferent level,because at this stage they,
stepbystep,begintolearntoseeearthlyproblemsas
God sees them. The egocentrism of such a person
getsgradually
substituted
with
Godcentrism.
How canoneget ridof theviciousworkof the
mind,whichimpedesfurtheradvancement?Very
simply:donottrytomuffleit,butjustthinkabout
God!Thenatureofthemindissuchthatitisneces
saryforittobepreoccupiedwithsomething,soletit
bepreoccupied
with
God!
And
when
it
is
preoccu
piedwithGod,itstops.[2]
Ifyouarenotableyet todo this, thenoccupy it
with repetitionof thenameofGodorwithanother
usefulactivity.
Theuncontrolledmindislikeasnake.Ithastwo
tendencies: it moves not straight and captures allthingswhichitsees.Butitshouldbeforcedtomove
straighttoGod,turneddirectlytowardHim.

When the thinking of a progressing person is
performednotby themindbutbythebuddhi,then
thebuddhi
submerges
into
God
in
order
to
become
Him.
Thisiswhyitissoimportanttoaccustomoneself
to being turned by the face (of the consciousness)
towardGod.[2]
There are twomain themes that one should al
ways remember about: the approaching death andGod.Andtherearetwomainthemesthatoneshould
forget:theevilcausedbyotherstoyouandthegood
donebyyou toothers.Of course, it isessential to
rememberaboutdeath,becausethishelpsonetodo
many good things and avoid doing many bad
things![2]
Timeisthemostpreciousgiftinthisworld.Do
notwaste itsaying illwordsordoingbaddeeds!
Onemustnotwastetime!Itwillnotwaitforanyone.
It is impossible to return themomentwhichhas
been wasted; it is lost forever Nobody knows
whendeathcomes.Thehandof timecancrushyouatanymoment
Inyourdeedsyoushouldrisetothelevelofhe
roesandbenotweakwilledpeople!
Remembering about ones own death leads to
unidirectionalresoluteness![7]
Theposition,pride,andpowerallvanishbe
fore death. Realizing this, strive day and night

withpurityofthebodyandmindandspirittore
alizetheHigherSelfbyservingalllivingbeings!
Thebody shouldbe supported andkept as aninstrumentforthispurpose.
But remember, you are not these bodies, and

Those who seek Union with God, those who
seek the welfare of the world should discard as
worthless both praise and blame, appreciation and
derision,prosperityandadversity.Noone,noteven
God or an Avatar can ever escape criticism andblame.ButTheydonotyieldtothreats.[7].

receive. This attitude gives immeasurable joy. To

sessedwith sex. ButHe supportsmarriage, family

helps washing out the primitive lower self, be
cause family life is favorable for transformation of

Marriage and karma yoga teach one to care for

themselvestopeopleasanobjectofworship,instead
of God. Others speak about God, yet pervert His
Teachingstotheopposite.
Anexampleofthisisawellknown,widelypromotedsectofyoga,whereitsfollowersas they
werewere suggested that every one of them is
God, a coessential to Him Part of Universal God.
Theyexpandedtheconsciousnessesand,asacon
stant practice, asked themselves: Who am I?The

The total freedom from the body is possible
