Satellite Internet Speed Test Testing Your Satellite Internet Service Speed

Introduction This guide covers how to perform a speed test on your satellite Internet service using various speed-testing services. We will go through how to bypass your router to minimize interference, clearing your browsers cache for best results and using several speed testing services. This document will cover both our IPStar and NBN Satellite Internet services. The steps for each test are mostly the same and where they differ is clearly marked. If you think there is an issue with your Internet speed then it is recommended that you record the upload and download results for each speed test. This information will enable our customer support staff to help you fix your issue much quicker.


Bypass Router Firstly we need to setup your PC so that it connects directly into your satellite modem. This is important as it gives your speed test the shortest path with the least amount of environmental interference to your computer.

Why? By removing the router and connecting straight to your modem we cut out a piece of equipment that could potentially be slowing your connection. Routers will also take a very, very small amount of time to forward any data passing through it; it’s negligibly small but could slightly affect your test results. A more important reason to connect directly to your modem is when you are using a wireless connection. The radio signals used by wireless routers are inherently slower than a cable. Additionally, further factors like physical distance, line of sight from your PC to the router and ambient radio “noise” can interfere with, therefore slow, your Internet connection’s speed. All in all, it is unlikely that your router would negatively affect the performance of your speed test, but removing it will ensure that the test results are as accurate as possible.

Steps Now let’s disconnect the WAN cable from the back of the router. This is typically a blue cable Plugged into a port labeled WAN.

Clear Browser Cache In order to ensure the speed tests accuracy, you should clear your web browser’s cache. We do this to eliminate any unnecessary Internet connections that can be generate by objects stored in the cache. If you use Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer then follow the guides below.

Chrome Start Chrome and click on the spanner button to access the application menu. Select “Settings”.

This will open Chromes settings tab. Scroll down until you see “Show advanced settings…” and click on the link.

A window should now appear that asking you the timespan you wish to clear. Select “the beginning of time”, ensure that “Empty the cache” is checked and then click “Clear browsing data”.


Firefox Start Firefox and click on the menu button at the top left of the application. Browse to and click “Options”.

When the options window appears, select the “Advanced” section in the top menu and then select “Network”. To clear the browsers cache, click both of the “Clear Now” buttons within the “Cached Web Content” and “Offline Web Content and User Data” sections.


Safari Open Safari and browse to the top menu bar. You need to verify that the “Develop” menu is present.

If it is not there you will need to enable it. To do so, click on the “Safari” menu item and then “Preferences…”.

This will open the preferences window. Select the “Advanced” tab and then check the “Show Develop menu in menu bar” option.

Internet Explorer Open Internet Explorer. On the top right of the application is a cog button. Click it and scroll down to “Safety” then “Delete browsing history…”.

This will open the “Delete Browsing History” window. To clear the cache, tick “Cookies and website data” and then click “Delete”.


Speed Tests Now that your browsers cache is empty, we will do a variety of speed tests to determine the upload and download speeds of your connection.

IPStar Only Speed Test This tests speeds using IPStar’s speed testing services. Open your web-browser and browse to support.ipstaraustralia.com. Scroll down the page until you reach a section called “iPSTAR SpeedTest” that contains links to

NBN Only Speed Test This tests speeds using the NBN speed testing services. You will need to use a browser with java installed. This test uses services supplied by the NBN Co through Optus. To use it, open your web browser and enter the IP Address “10.250.43.100 or 10.250.54.100”. This will be provided to you by the support operator. You may get a security warning that the page is attempting to run a Java application. This normal, click “I accept the risk and I want to run this app” and then click “Run”.

You will now see a webpage with an animated application on it. Click on “Click to start test” to begin the test.

There are a few parts to these results. The actual download spend for this test would be 4.63 Mbps while the maximum download speed is 9.6 Mbps. The upload speed would be 1.0 Mbps. Enter your speed test results here.

Activ8me Speed Test (Both) This uses our internal tools to test your speed. This includes your real-world speed and maximum speed. In order to access the testing tools, open your web browser and go to http://119.77.95.1/speedtest/. You may get a security warning that the page is attempting to run a Java application. This normal, click “I accept the risk and I want to run this app” and then click “Run”.

Internode Sydney (Both) This speed test is used to determine your connection strength to our data center in Sydney. We will use SpeedTest.net to do this as it allows you to pick a testing point that will give you the most accurate result. To start, open your web browser of choice and browse to www.speedtest.net. This page uses Adobe Flash to perform the speed test therefore ensure you are using a browser with a Flash extension. When the webpage has loaded you will see a screen like below:

We need to set our testing server to the Sydney Internode server before running the test. To do this, click on the map and drag until you reach Sydney. To view the servers, hover your mouse over the glowing dots. You may need to zoom in to click on the correct server, which

can be done by pressing the button on the zoom slider on the left hand side of the testing application. Click on the server that is labelled “Sydney Hosted by Internode”.
