Chapter 2 DTS Satellite Interface InstallationIntroduction
IntroductionThe DTS analyzers provides a number of resource applications. All DTS analyzers resource applications that are enabled on the hosted Interfaces must have the correct version of software installed on your computer. If the correct version of software is not loaded or available on your computer, then the application can not be used until the correct version is loaded. Adding the correct client software (SW) versions for the applications is a simple process that can be easily accomplished by the user with no extra materials.
Installing the DTS Satellite InterfaceThe PSK support for the DTS application is achieved in two parts. The first part is Hardware the second part is through software. In order to support the PSK source a new interface card / PIM (Plug-in Module) was designed. The PSK interface card or PIM must be installed in to the DTS chassis to take advantage of monitoring the PSK source.
To enable the new features in the DTS application, which the PSK Interface offers, the current software version had to be updated. The following section will guide the user through the Hardware and Soft-ware installation for the DTS-200 and DTS-300/330 platforms.

Tuner The Tuner box (Figure 5) allows you to select either IF or L-Band.
Channel The Channel box allows you to select the channel of interest from the selected Channel Plan.
Freq. (MHz) While in the IF mode the Freq. (MHz) text box is automatically set to 70 MHz and this can not be edited. While in the L Band mode the Freq. (MHz) text box allows you to set the L-Band frequency from 950 to 2150 MHz.
If an L-Band frequency is entered out of the receivers range a dialog box error message (Figure 6) is displayed.
Figure 5 Receive Set-Up area (Tuner)
NOTEIn the first PSK release the selection of a channel from a Channel Plan is not available. Therefore the only selection is N/A.

Symbol Rate (MS/s) The Symbol Rate (MS/s) box allows you to enter a symbol rate from 256 ks/s to 30.0 MS/s.
If a symbol rate is entered out of the receivers range a dialog box error message (Figure 7) is displayed.
Demodulator area The "Demodulator" area (Figure 8) allows you to select the modulation type and code rate of the satellite signal under analysis.
Modulation The following modulation types can be selected from the Modulation pull down arrow (Figure 9 on page 16).
– Turbo 8PSK– Turbo QPSK– DVB QPSK
Figure 7 Symbol Rate (MS/s) error message
NOTEThe transport stream data rate can be found as a total in the TSA Summary View. This is sometimes referred to as the data input rate or data output rate in satellite receivers and modulators.

– DCII QPSK– DCII OQPSK
Code Rate The code rates for each modulation format are listed as follows:
– Turbo QPSK, Rate 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 5/6 and 7/8– Turbo 8PSK, Rate 2/3, 3/4_2.05, 3/4_2.10, 2.10, 5/6, 8/9– DVB QPSK, Rates of 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 5/6 and 7/8– DCII QPSK, Rates of 5/11, 1/2, 3/5, 2/3, 3/4, 4/5, 5/6 and 7/8– DCII OQPSK, Rates of 5/11, 1/2, 3/5, 2/3, 3/4, 4/5, 5/6 and 7/8
DVB and DCII code rates can be automatically determined by the receiver whereas Turbo formats require manual selection of the code rate. These code rates can be selected from a pull down menu. Figure 10 illustrates an DCII QPSK signal.

LNB Control area The “LNB Control” area (Figure 11) allows you to turn the LNB power On or Off. It also allows you to select the band and polarity.
Power The LNB control allows the operator to turn the LNB power On or Off. If the receiver is being used to monitor a test point that does not require control voltages and tones the LNB power should be turned off. This is especially true if a resistive load such as an attenuator is put in line between the L-band input to the PSK receiver and the test point.
Band High band/Low Band control using 13/18V selection.
Polarity Vertical/Horizontal selection control using 22kHz on/off selection.
Status area The status area of the PSK interface display (Figure 12 on page 19) provides some common modulation and coding data among all PSK modulations. These include power level (Current, Max, Min, Mean), SNR (Current, Max, Min, Mean), Frequency Get (current and error offset), Symbol Rate (current and error offset), Code Rate, Spectral Inversion, LNB power indicator, and a reset counter button.
NOTEThe LNB is available only for an L-Band input, these settings do not apply to the IF (70 MHz) input.

Power Level (dBm) The Power Level (Current, Maximum, Minimum, Mean) are updated approximately once per second.
Measurement range:
– -25 to -65 dBm for L-Band– 0 to -40 dBm for 70 MHz IF
Measurement statistics:
– current– maximum– minimum– mean
SNR: (dB) Provides SNR estimates reported in dB for both L-Band and 70 MHz IF inputs.
Measurement range:
– 0 to -25 dB for L-Band– 0 to -18 dB for 70 MHz IF
Measurement statistics:
– current– maximum– minimum– mean
Freq. Get: (MHz) Provides the frequency in MHz of the received signal that the tuner locks to.
Symbol Rate (MS/s) Provides the symbol rate in MS/s of the received signal.
Code Rate Displays the code rate automatically detected for DVB QPSK, DCII QPSK and DCII OQPSK. The code rate for Turbo 8PSK and Turbo QPSK is manually set.
