Hi everyone, my how time flies! What a year we have had at SARCAN. In February, we set an all-time record for Telemiracle raising over $51,000.00 through helping hand sales. This took place at a time when our depots were very slow. Our return rates and volumes were down last winter and a lot of that had to do with the horrible weather we experienced. I am happy to report that things have returned to normal over the summer and fall of 2013. Our volumes are now up for the year to date returns and our return rates are up as well to the end of October 2013.

SARCAN Recycling had a lot to celebrate this year, and started with spring television commercials promoting the principle that “It Pays to Recycle”. This campaign transitioned nicely into the depot customer appreciation days in June. Thank you all for all of your efforts across the province to help make our customers feel special for a day.

In late August, we hit another milestone: recycling our six billionth container. Regina depot employee’s and processing employees enjoyed surprising the lucky recipient who recycled the six billionth container. If you haven’t done it already, check out our commercials for the Spring campaing and our six billionth container at SARCAN’s youtube channel (www.youtube.com/sarcanrecycling).

The Ten Tree promotion followed shortly after, we received a lot of positive feedback for the trees you handed out to our customers. Our social media team continues to encourage people to join us on Facebook and Twitter. Thank you all for your photos and contributions to this part of our communication efforts.

Employee Recognition day in Regina was a huge success with the inaugural group of 25 year employees being honoured. Over 1,100 years of recycling experience was present that day! This remains one of our favorite events of the year. Congratulations to all who received service awards.

The year has seen system and depot improvements continue across the province. We have had new locations, improvements or renovations take place in Naicam, Grenfell, Moosomin, Redvers, Preeceville, Shaunovan and Weyburn. We have also built two bulk order high speed counting systems for handling curbside orders and conducting depot audits in Saskatoon and Regina.

From the business side of operations, this year our overall operating costs remain on budget. Salvage prices have remained stable this year at a lower rate than in previous years. We are encouraged by the efforts of the depots and plants to remain cost effective while endorsing the new container per person expectations which were initiated in the spring of 2013. Early indications show your efforts are working at the depots and plants. Keep up the good work on this front as we move into the slower winter months.

As we approach the holiday season I would like to thank all of you for your hard work and efforts over the last year and wish you a happy holiday season.

Managers’ Message2013 was record-setting in many different ways:

• Legislated container returns are up 7.53% for the first half of the fiscal year. That is an increase of 16.8 million containers bringing our six-month total to 241 million containers. We are on target to set a record for total returns.

• The secret shoppers have toured the province and the second round of visits are complete. Overall, results were very good. Thank you to all the employees who make great customer service a priority in the depots.

• The SARCAN system continues to grow and expand. As of June 2013 there were 675 individuals employed across the SARCAN system.

• Employee Recognition Day was once again the highlight of the year. 83 employees were recognized for 5, 10, 15, 20, and for the first time 25 years of service alongside four retirees. Congratulations to each of the recipients. A quarter of a century is an amazing achievement. We are now looking forward to the next 25 years.

• Regionally-based customer service and employee wellness training was once again provided in 2013. All employees were scheduled to attend 1 of 8 regional training locations. This training was last provided in 2011 and has since been completely revamped. Keep the FISH philosophy alive in the depots. Remember that your attitude affects everything you do. You get to choose your attitude every day so choose a great one!

Thanks to each and every depot and processing employee for your hard work and commitment to SARCAN. Individually we do good things, but together we do great things. SARCAN would not be the best recycling system in North America without you.

Thank You!--Regional Managers and Sean Collins, Assitant Director of Operations/General Manager of Collections Systems

This year on October 24th 2013, SARCAN held our 20th annual Employee Recognition Day in Regina. Over 85 employees were honoured for their hard work and outstanding contributions to the SARCAN system. Their success is a testament to the dedication demonstrated by the incredible SARCAN staff. Congratulations!!2013 was our 25th anniversary, and we had an amazing 14 recipients receive their 25 year service award at this years’ Recognition Day. That is a MAJOR milestone.

When combined with the total years of experience of our eight 2013 retirees, we celebrated over 1,200 years of experience. This is an incredible achievement, and certainly worth celebrating…and celebrate we did! This year we incorporated a new game show for the afternoon portion. Minute to Win It, anyone? Saskatchewan Celebrates 25 Years of SARCANSix Billionth Container Recycled

At the end of the summer, SARCAN had officially hit the milestone of six billionth containers recycled. What an incredible accomplishment! Can you believe we have all counted enough cans to go to the moon and bag? Wow! We decided to try something different to mark the six billionth milestone: creating a flash-mob style surprise for one lucky and unsuspecting customer!

Janice St. Denis, of Regina, was bringing her beverage containers to the SARCAN depot on Rochdale Boulevard in Regina. SARCAN staffers slipped the honourary container into her returns, and when the can came across the counter, a massive celebration ensued. The surprise included a balloon drop, cheerleaders, confetti, streamers, noisemakers and more!

A big shout out goes to Nichole Burdon from the Rochdale depot, who was our superstar Recycling Technician who helped us get the perfect shots.

Cheerleaders posed as customers in the depot, so the surprise was completely unsuspected. If you haven’t had the chance yet, we highly recommend you go online and check out the SARCAN website or visit youtube.com/sarcanrecycling to view the full video of how the event happened, and the incredible reaction!

SARCAN and Ten Tree Celebrate National Forest Week

SARCAN Recycling’s 25th anniversary celebrations were kicked into high gear when free tree saplings were given away at the depots for customers to plant in their backyards, during National Forest Week, September 23-27.

Working in partnership with the renowned Saskatchewan-based company, Ten Tree Apparel, SARCAN has issued a commemorative 25th anniversary t-shirt staff across the province. Ten Tree’s mandate is to plant ten trees for every shirt sold. SARCAN and Ten Tree shared these very special issued trees with our customers, to say thank you, for 25 great years of recycling.

“We could have planted the trees pretty much anywhere, in another province, or another country, but since SARCAN is rooted in Saskatchewan, we want these trees to be rooted here, just like our staff, and customers,” said Amy McNeil, SARCAN’s Executive Director.

“Ten Tree is excited to have the opportunity to pursue such a unique partnership with SARCAN, an amazing organization also rooted in Saskatchewan. Both companies are focused on protecting the environment and what better time to celebrate our shared mandate than National Forest Week,” said Derrick Emsley of Ten Tree Apparel.

Provine-wide SARCAN Customer Appreciation DaysAll SARCAN depots across the province celebrated 25 years in their communities in June and July of 2013. Each depot was given a budget, but what they did to celebrate was entirely up to the staff. There were so many celebrations, and the depots were decorated beautifully! We posted pictures of the celebrations across the province on SARCAN’s Facebook page, so be sure to check them out if you haven’t already.

Here are some photos of the celebrations. Top right: The staff at La Ronge SARCAN wear Hawaiian Leis in the new SARCAN colours. Middle right: Saskatoon South celebrates with a huge banner. Bottom right: Nipawin SARCAN staff celebrate their new SARCAN orange shirts and matching gloves. Below: Coronach’s celebration cake in classic blue SARCAN colours and Gull Lake’s cake with the new 25 year anniversary logo. Congrats to all who participated. We had a lot of fun!

New and Improved Customer Service Training During the month of November, SARCAN employees province-wide enjoyed Customer Service and Employee Wellness Training. Close to 500 employees attended at eight regional training sessions. The program was newly revamped and it was exciting to share it with our staff across the province.

Arriving employees were asked to register, and, depending on their last name, they were either thrilled to be sent to a nicely decorated registration table where they were offered refreshments by friendly and helpful individuals, or left to register themselves at an undecorated table with no refreshments available. The customer

service experience had begun! Thank you again to the employees who were good sports while we illustrated the effect of great customer service versus a lack of effort or interest in our customers.

A review of safe work practices let everyone practice proper lifting techniques and received a refresher on the SARCAN shuffle. Why did so many groan when they saw the snow shoveling slide? Focus then turned to the benefits of warming up to work and stretching to increase flexibility and reduce the risk of injury. First was a highly motivational demonstration video.

At this point employees who are used to constant movement and activity had been sitting for over an hour so everyone welcomed the chance to get up, warm up, and stretch it out! Can you picture 45 of us running on the spot for 5 minutes to warm up in Yorkton? Did I mention that we were in a third floor room? From head to toe The SARCAN Ten stretches were demonstrated and attempted. The realization that stretching can be so simple and doesn’t require huge amounts of time had everyone determined to find ways to add stretching to their days. Lunch breaks will never be the same again. It felt good!

Many of us would like to be healthier or are worried about current health issues. Some of us have hereditary health concerns that may affect us in the future. Knowing that if you were to see a nutritionist on your own time, it would cost a lot of money the next portion was an opportunity for a free consultation with a presentation that was developed by Saskatoon dietitian Stephanie Langdon especially for SARCAN employees. Everyone received valuable information as we discussed The Cost of Health. A particularly lasting impression was left by looking at and feeling the bag with 2 cups of sugar from a 2 litre bottle of pop or ¾ cup of salt from a bag of potato chips. Tips to get more healthy food for less money were well-received and many suggestions and personal experiences were shared.

The Fish Philosophies of Choose Your Attitude, Be There, Play, and Make Their Day were the four keys to the focus on customer service in the afternoon. With personal reflection, group discussion, and entertaining video presentations, employees gave serious thought to the customer’s point of view and the opportunity every individual has to not just do their job, but do it in a way to be ‘world famous’. Full-time employees reflected on the fact that they will spend the majority of their time or 2080 hours per year at work. They were then asked who they wanted to be when they are at work and to think about what type of person they enjoyed working with. A number of interesting ideas for having fun at work, engaging customers, and making the day of customers and co-workers were shared. SARCAN employees are a bunch of creative people!

Many positive comments were received following the training. Employees appreciated the opportunity to practices new things like The SARCAN Ten stretches and review strategies and procedures to make their job easier and their days more enjoyable.

Thanks to everyone who attended the training, and the facilitators for the preperation and presentations!

SARC Celebrates 45th Anniversary in Fall of 2013SARCAN Recycling’s parent company, SARC, celebrated its 45th anniversary this year. We had a celebration at the annual Fall Conference, and we also hosted a contest on our Facebook page with trivia from the 1960s. The people who guessed the right answers won prize packs of different things from the 1960s like music, movies, toys and candy. The contest was a huge success! Many SARC Members operate SARCAN Recycling centres in their communities. SARC started as a group of eight Members in 1968, and has now grown to over 80 Members across the province. The association helps the disability services sector in areas such as training, consultation and leadership. Congratulations, SARC, on 45 great years!

Cindy Ellacott Achieves Goal of Running Marathon My doctor told me that I absolutely had to change my lifestyle. I explained to her that I really wanted to but I had given up. That weekend I put on my running shoes and got on the treadmill. After 15 minutes at 2.2 mph I had to quit before I fell over. The next day I got back on the treadmill. That was March 24, 2013.

One day I got home to discover that my husband had bought me a new mountain bike. I also started canoeing at a nearby lake. I even played a few rounds of golf. How ironic that being more active gives you more energy! My diet had completely changed. Salads, fresh vegetables and lean proteins allowed me to eat until I was full without taking in the excessive calories of take-out burgers and fries.

I decided that I wanted a challenge and signed up to run the 10K race in Melfort’s Multi_K run on September 21, 2013. I knew my time was good and I felt great. The last 5K flew by and I finished the 10k in a personal best time of 1:10:14, 7 minutes behind my doctor. If you are thinking about making changes, start small but start now! Six months flew by and I had lost 70 lbs., ran a 10K race and was off of 11 out of 13 of the medications I had been taking to treat my many health issues.

On The Road with Cara (SARCAN Summer Student)2013 marked the 25th anniversary of SARCAN Recycling. The birthday party lasted all summer long with celebrations in communities across Saskatchewan. Along with my partner in crime, fellow summer student Mikhaila Anderson, I travelled to all four corners of the province to promote and talk with people about SARCAN. We received feedback on our services and responded to questions and concerns from the public.

Over the course of the summer, the most common questions were related to the new blue bin recycling services of Loraas and how this would impact SARCAN. The answer: not a whole lot. The public was reassured that SARCAN will be around for many years to come!

This summer was such a great adventure on the road to twelve different events across the province. At each event, we set up our booth which offered the chance to play recycling activities and win awesome

SARCAN prizes and swag.

Here are some of the favourites from the summer celebrations:

Best Event: Moose Jaw Sidewalk Days. In Moose Jaw, we saw everything from snowbirds to Star Wars characters.

Greenest Event: Regina Folk Festival. At this event, there were clearly labeled bins for garbage, compost and recycling all over the grounds.

Best Recycling Game: SARCAN Trivia. Contestants got to spin the wheel and answer corresponding question to win a prize.

Best Burger: The Burger Galaxy Grill in Moose Jaw.

Best Dessert: Cherry Sundaes at the Bruno Cherry Sunday.

Best Combination of Food and Music: Grilledcheesapooloza. A music festival in Kindersley that features local artists and serves grilled cheese sandwiches.

Best Entertainment: Street performers at the Saskatoon Fringe. One performer juggled fire on a bed of nails!

As I look back on my summer adventures, I am filled with happy memories and can’t help but smile. Honestly, I loved the experience so much that I stayed on with SARC past my summer position until Christmas. In 2014, I am saying goodbye (but not forever) as I move to Vancouver to pursue education in the field of graphic design. While I will be located in another province, don’t expect to have seen the last of me!

Depot NewsNaicam Moves to New Building, Hosts Grand Opening

Since 1991, Naicam has had a SARCAN depot, but it was definitely time to move to a new building. In the 22 years the depot has been open, they have recycled over 10 million beverage containers! Their new depot is completely modern, and is much cleaner and brighter.

The Grand Opening was held on November 27, and included local Melfort MLA Kevin Phillips. Brian Lukowski, the depot supervisor, had the new building looking great! Brian is also Naicam’s local green thumb, as he cares for plants for the town residents over the winter months. The new depot’s space now allows for a forklift too.

The Grand Opening took place on November 1, 2013. The MLA for the Melville-Saltcoats , Bob Bjonerfud, and the mayor of Kamsack, Rod Gardner were there to celebrate.

Congratulations, Naicam!

Grand Opening of Renovated Depot in MoosominOn September 11, 2013, Moosomin celebrated the Grand Opening of their newly expanded and renovated depot. There is now significantly more space at the depot, and a vestibule entrance. The staff and depot supervisor,

Chris Frape, worked hard to make sure the depot looked good. They had the chance to show off their new digs with tours after the official program. People from Pipestone Kin Ability came over to take part in the day, and there was even a cake that featured a picture of the staff! In attendance was Moosomin MLA Don Toth and Moosomin Mayor Larry Tomlinson.

SARCAN Kamsack has been in in the town since 1989, and in its former location since the spring of 1999 - so it was time for a change. The new depot has nearly double the space of the previous one, at 3,400 square feet.

The new depot’s space allows for an improved back area for

loading and a bigger customer service area. The new depot is also much cleaner and brighter!

The Grand Opening took place on November 1, 2013. The MLA for the Melville-Saltcoats , Bob Bjonerfud, was in attendance and so was the mayor of Kamsack, Rod Gardner.

Congratulations, Kamsack!

Grenfell’s Grand Opening Full of Community SpiritOn November 21, 2013, Grenfell celebrated the Grand Opening of their brand new depot, located right in the heart of the town. It was a very cold day outside, but the depot was warm and friendly! Lots of people in town came in for a visit and took a tour of the depot. The staff were so knowledgable about their depot and the people who came really enjoyed seeing demonstrations of the equipment and seeing the ‘behind the scenes’ action. Everyone enjoyed coffee and donuts from the Grenfell Bakery as well!

In attendance was Moosomin MLA Don Toth and Grenfell City Councillor Gib Heinemen. Darlene Trithart and staff did an amazing job of getting the depot looking sparkling clean.

Watson Depot Celebrates Ten Tree PromotionSeason’s Greeting from the Watson Depot! So much has happened at the depot over the last few months. Customer Appreciation Day; SARCAN’s 25th Anniversary & planting trees for Ten Tree promotion; student employees during Career & Work Experience, to name a few.

Congratulations to employee Faith Gabie on her Grade 12 Graduation and her family’s recent move to Humboldt. We wish her and her family all the best! Watson Depot spoiled their customers during the Customer Appreciation Day! Cookies, coffee, juice and prizes for all! The customers mingled and visited the depot throughout the day. Our

youngest visitors had the most fun when we invited them to count containers with us! Future recyclers Ty & Nate Thibault (pictured above) sported aprons, ear protection and gloves! Celebrating SARCAN’s 25th Anniversary and the Ten Tree promotion were HUGE successes! We chose to do something different, along with handing out the trees to customers, to ensure the trees were planted. We invited the graduating class of the schools that participate in bottle drives to plant a tree in the school yard in their name. 26 students from Watson, Quill Lake and Engelfeld schools participated with planting the trees! Imagine when they return in 10 years what their trees will look like! If we ever have a similar opportunity, we would invite the students from the areas’ kindergarten classes!

The depot has had the priviledge of supporting four students during their work experience program through their school. They have learned many aspect of working at the depot, counting containers, crushing, loading trailer and sorting glass. Since this letter, two students, Brendell and Devin, have moved on to other placements. Remaining students, Brayden & Janel, come weekly and have enjoyed their experience. Brayden’s favorite job is manning the Orwak to crush containers. Janel says she prefers the Orwak as well. They work independently and are a pleasure to have at the depot! We went for Chinese food as a way of thanking these hard working employees. We wish you all Happy Holidays & a Safe and Prosporous New Year!

Rider Nation Celebration in Indian HeadSince the last issue of the SARCAN Spirit, a couple employees left; Winnifred Forbes and Darwin Bieber. With departures there are always new hires; Danielle Gartner started in April and worked for the summer, but is back at school full time, so she now works some days after school. Robert Brown, Bob, started on October 16. Welcome to our new employees!

Since the Grey Cup is in Saskatchewan this year, our staff decided to decorate our depot in true Rider Pride spirit and entered the 101 Grey Cup Festival decorating contest. Our collage picture is posted on the webpage 101greycupfestival.ca/decorate as well as the SARCAN’s Facebook page.

The windows were strung with green mini lights, and Roughriders balls. Many of the decorated characters displayed in the windows were handmade from recyclable materials. The skeleton is made of plastic

milk jugs, the 13th man scarecrow has a cardboard body, a coffee tin head, and the eyes, nose and mouth are beer bottle caps. The tin man is made of assorted food tin cans.

A pumpkin for Halloween was even carved out with the roughrider logo and sprayed with green to highlight the logo! Banners, signs, pompoms, balloons and streamers decorate the inside of the depot. Unfortunately, we did not win, but we sure had fun decorating and had many compliments.

I am very excited that the Riders won the Grey Cup, I was there in person to cheer them on!

Hello From the Friendly Folks at Melfort SARCANMy name is John Barks, I just became the Supervisor of the Melfort Depot in the middle of September.

We have five full-time employees and one casual working at our depot currently. We have had a busy year so far, and we are hoping that it stays that way for the winter. One of the changes that had recently taken place was that I was able to donate a kidney to my sister in October. So I was off of work for a couple of weeks. We wish Sherry a speedy recovery as she transitions with her new kidney.

This year for our Christmas party we went out for supper then an evening of bowling! We are also trying to plan a get- away together and perhaps go down -hill skiing at Wapiti Valley Ski Resort one day.

The staff recycled 4.2 million containers last year, and so far, by October this year, we have done over 3 million. That’s fantastic. Keep up the good work, gang!

Melfort is a growing community with lots of new people moving in all the time. We have the Northern Lights Palace Pool, 18 hole golf course, Curling rink, and Hockey rink that seats about 1,800 people. We are only ½ hr away from Wapiti Valley Ski Resort.

We wish everyone a joyous holiday season and we hope the winter is good to everyone. Cheers!!

Kind Words About the Folks at Regina Grant RoadI just wanted to contact you to tell you about the great service I received in Regina (on Grant Rd). I wanted to share about the friendly and professional service in Regina. My final visit to this store was on the 25th anniversary day. Everyone in SARCAN was extremely excited for the celebration. They not only welcomed me with huge smiles and friendly conversation, but I could tell how much they loved what they do. I thanked them for their service and they thanked me for being a customer. I have never felt more appreciated. Not only was I able to do something great for the environment (by recycling), but the people were grateful for my business. The manager was also working and made sure to offer me the complimentary beverages and snacks as I walked in the door. Even though they were extra excited about this celebration, this is the type of service I have received from them in the past and thought you should know.

Thank you for the great job you do and the opportunities for employment and recycling. Desiree (SARCAN Customer).

North Battleford Depot Now Open on Saturdays Hello, from everyone in North Battleford! We had a busy summer like everyone else. We have a few new faces here and lost a few old faces. New Supervisor Jeff Bogdan, Lyla Amyotte, Wally Rose and Sheldon Parkinson were also hired and part time staff Andres Moore. Everyone is enjoying the job which is good. Rod Poitras and Shane Jobb celebrated five years at recognition day in Regina, and they enjoyed the entertainment and awards. They also had a tour through the processing plant.

November 2, 2013, we opened Saturdays for the first time after 17 months. We made a lot of people happy. Everyone that came in remarked it was good to have us open again.

In June, we had a customer appreciation day with coffee, juice and Tim Horton cookies which was served to the public with the help of BTEC clients and staff, which was a success! We are brightening up the front customer service area with fresh paint and new lights. We are looking forward to the completion.

Tisdale Paints Their Depot Blue As some of you know, our building in Tisdale was always a lovely shade of orange. This past summer we had it painted. Yes the orange metal can be painted. We are now SARCAN blue, we have received many compliments on it.

As a group this year we decided that we would like to take in a football game. On the morning of August 17, we got on Charlie’s Charters bus and left for Regina and the game.

Hello from Biggar!

Biggar SARCAN opened in 1989 in an old building located a block off Main Street. Then, in 1991, SARCAN purchased a farm equipment building located on Highway 4 South. The Depot was set up in a 14’ x 10’ area. A processing plant was set up in the shop area with a glass crusher, horizontal baler and aluminum compactor. Between the SARCAN Depot and Processing Plant there were eight employees on staff.

Due to more recyclables coming on line and the smaller equipment, the processing plant portion of the depot was closed in August of 1996. An interesting note is that our building is the only building owned by SARCAN in the province.

With the closure of processing in 1996, former SARCAN Director of Operations Ken Homenick and Wheatland Regional Centre Manager ,Bob Legoffe, met with Biggar’s Town Councillors. An agreement was reached between the three parties for the Town to contract our services to process cardboard, paper, household tin and household glass. With the closure of the plant, the depot was relocated to the front of the building. The much needed renovation increased the depot area to 20’ x 40’. With the formation of Biggar Recycling Centre, three SARCAN Processing Plant employees were able to retain employment. Two of the employees, Chris and Warren have been employed with SARCAN/Biggar Recycling Centre since 1991. Brenda, the supervisor of the SARCAN depot and the Biggar Recycling Centre Supervisor started in 1994. The two Depot employees, Nadine and Connie have been with us since 2008 and 2009 respectively.

Since opening the Biggar Recycling Centre, our staff have diverted 4.4 millions pounds (2,000 Metric Tonnes) from inception until the end of December 2012 from the local landfill.

Quite a few years ago a memo was sent out to the Depots requesting submissions for a name for a quarterly publication put out by Head Office. Brenda and her crew submitted several suggestions and the “SARCAN Spirit” was chosen. For their efforts the SARCAN staff was rewarded with pizza.

Many changes have taken place over the last 20 years as far as recycling goes but one thing that does remain unchanged is that all of us employees at the SARCAN depot and the Biggar Recycling Centre are a very close knit bunch!

Recycling Returns!

Page 21

Greetings from all of the Staff at the Regina Angus Depot!

The year started off slow but we did have a busy summer – container returns were up and kept all of us hopping.

At this year’s employee recognition day, we had staff members that received a 20 year award, a 15 year award, two 5 year awards, and one retiring employee.

We had a Grey Cup Spirit Day, where all wore their green and white and showed off their rider pride.

We get all of the recycling from Mosaic stadium after the Rider games. The Rough Riders organization, the City of Regina and the North Central Regina Community Association work

together to bring all of the containers back to us, through the “Go Green” program. The deposit refund money is used to work on projects in the community, such as painting over graffiti. It’s a great program, and we are happy to be part of it!

All of the Angus Depot employees are looking forward to the New Year and wish all SARCAN employees the best for 2014.

Hello Everyone,

The last time I wrote for the SARCAN Spirit was for our Grand Opening in 2010. A lot has changed since then and our community has grown and become busier than ever. With the expansion of the new K3 mine, more people have moved to the area. Houses are being built, condos coming up and new housing development areas. There are two new motels, an A&W coming up, and a lot of new customers.

We are a medium depot operated through Langenburg and District Activity Center (LDAC) staffing one full time, one part time, one casual and myself. We serve customers from in town to a 50km radius area around us. We also sell a lot of items from SARC Bark.

Our summer months are very busy. We could probably use six staff instead of four! Mondays and Fridays are like tornados going through - with the expansion of K3 mine - returns are higher with two man-camps, the lake, campers, golf courses and businesses.

Our winter months are a slow down, as many customers go south for the winter, and summer events are gone. The only good thing about winter is that our mind, body and soul comes back to normal and then it’s Christmas, ski-dooing, curling and freezing.

Esterhazy SARCAN staffers Julie and Calinda, are hard workers and keep the depot well maintained and in good

running order, while I am there and when I am gone. We decorate for every calendar event and holiday by dressing up and handing out treats. We also support local organizations like the Lions, Legion, Senior hockey, and schools.

We all have different hobbies and interest but work well together. Dianne enjoys golfing, curling, fishing (winter and summer), playing cards, mingling, dancing and enjoys the outdoors with family and family get togethers. Julie enjoys socializing with adults and children, her family, her famous dart throwing and always keeping busy. She never sits still, she is always puttering around; wrench in hand, my personal handy woman. Calinda enjoys quading, fishing, bowling, cards, gardening and facebook.

We have all gone out together to play golf, have lunch and supper, play cards and have a few drinks. We even join LDAC for lunches, trips and get togethers. A new group home is in the process of being built in Esterhazy through LDAC. Our contribution to helping raise money is by raffling off a Cedar Deacon Bench to help furnish the building.

Any of you passing through Esterhazy, stop by and have a visit. We’ll put on a pot of coffee, shoot the breeze, and if you give a bit of notice we’ll bake you a cake!

Hello from Hudson Bay! The town of Hudson Bay is located about 3 ½ hours east of Saskatoon. It is a nice little town with a population of 1,504 and growing.

It has been a busy year here at our depot. The locale OSB mill has shifted into full swing and our container numbers have seen a bit of an increase that hopefully will continue.

We had a successful 25th anniversary celebration with a good turnout of customers who had a chance to meet our new workshop manager from Porcupine Opportunities Program in Porcupine Plain, Jim Jensen.

On October 24th, both I (15 years) and Betty (20 years) had the fortune to attend our recognition banquet in Regina. The food and service were wonderful and we can’t say enough about how much we appreciate everything that everyone at head office does to make is special.

Thanks again everyone. That is it for now in Hudson Bay.

Have a great Christmas and Happy New Year!

Good Day from the Cudworth Depot!

Glenda McLaughlin is the small depot supervisor at the Cudworth Depot. Glenda has been employed at SARCAN since January of 2003. She received the cleanliness award in 2005 and 2006 and the accuracy award in 2012. Columbian Industries awarded Glenda a 10 year service gift acknowledging her years of employment with SARCAN.

Glenda has trained a few of the participants from Columbian Industries on the orwalk and on dumping glass bottles into the blue bins.

The participants are a regular presence with the customers; helping recycle cardboard boxes and their paper. Glenda has online training for the forklift truck course. Kim Nessel is our casual employee, and has worked at the Cudworth depot since October of 2011.

The SARCAN depot in Cudworth (pictured above) is attached to the Columbian Industries facility. They also operate the Wakaw SARCAN depot. Elaine Mayer is the depot supervisor. Elaine has been employed with SARCAN since April of 1998. Elaine has seen many changes in her years of employment, from working in cramped places to the modern depot she works in today.

A grand opening was held in 2008 for the newly built SARCAN Depot in Wakaw. Columbian Industries awarded Elaine a 15 year service gift acknowledging her years of employment with SARCAN.

The Wakaw depot is very busy in the summer as lake residents open the cottages for the summer. Kim Hallberg is the casual employee starting employment in September 2013.

Gone Too Soon: Remembering Les Horvath’s LegacyLes was diagnosed with Cancer in September of 2009, and continued to work until October of 2012. Les was a big part of our crew; he would make your day in the morning. Even after a so-so day, he would always be leaving the building with a giggle and a smile as he was walking to catch the bus with the guys. (I can just see that smile and hear that laughter now. It continues to fill me with an overwhelming feeling). Even though Les had cancer, he never came with the attitude of “why me”, or, “pity me”. He was just Les.

Les won our hockey pool more than anyone. All the years we ran the pool at the plant he either won it or came in 2nd or 3rd. He had a knack for hockey and football. He called the sports department at the Star Phoenix on a daily basis to talk sports. Sometimes he gave them breaking information they didn’t know.

Les started failing in health in November of 2012, and was taken off work to try and treat the cancer more aggressively. He kept in contact with everyone at the plant, calling in to give his football pool picks, or just to talk and find out how everyone was doing. I know he cherished those conversations.

The call came to me from his sister in law, “Les has been given only two weeks to live by the Doctor, and Les has asked if you could come to the hospital and see him”. Wow! My heart sunk and I thought how can I go and face him? I was just told my employee, but more importantly, my friend, has only two weeks to live. It took a bit of time to gather myself and get in my truck to go. I wasn’t sure how I was going to react or say when I saw him. In my mind I thought, “I have to be tough for him.” I got to the hospital and I was all nerved up. I get to the nurses station and they tell me Les’s room number and the nurse says “you can just go in”. I get to the door, gather my thoughts for a moment and then go in to face Les. I’m greeted with Les sitting at the end of his bed, and he said, “my team is doing good in the draft, I think I might win again this year.” This was all said with that smile on his face and a little laughter. Not what I expected at all. He brought me to ease right away. I had brought a couple Ice Caps with me. We sat and talked for a while about sports and the bad workers he was seeing outside the window of the hospital. He said “those guys out there are not good workers; they are just standing around a lot.” Les made my day, just like he did so many days before. This was special. It’s hard to explain, but I left the hospital feeling uplifted from the visit.

Now I had to go and break the news to the guys at the plant. After such a great experience seeing Les, I would hardly be able to inform everyone he had only two weeks to live. I had told Jeff, our foreman, before we gathered everyone on the floor for a meeting. I started saying “I have some not so good news about Les”, I then got all muddled up and couldn’t get it out. Jeff stepped in and gave the message. Thanks, Jeff!

Jim and Twila, Les’ brother and sister-in-law are two of the strongest people I know. They were with Les every step of the way. They allowed us to visit Les anytime. Several staff made many trips to see Les at the hospital. I know he really appreciated it. Trevor went into see Les, once, and Trevor coughed and Les said, “Trevor are you coming down with a cold? You better take care of that.” Les then got up and handed Trevor a Kleenex. That sums up the type of guy Les was. Kevin Acton went and seen him and asked Les if there was anything he could bring him. Les said “I would like some hickory sticks”. Kevin said “Maybe also something healthy, like some fruit?” Les replied “Sure you can bring me some chocolate covered raisins, I like those!”

The Memorial Cup was on in Saskatoon during Les’ s last days. Once, when I was visiting, he was lying in bed and obviously in pain, but he said, “I am going to the Memorial Cup tomorrow”. I was in doubt he would make it, but sure enough, the next morning, Les woke up and was all chipper because the Star Phoenix staff was picking him up to go watch the game. Jim helped Les get all shaved for the game. Les walked over to the mirror, took a look and said, “Perfect”. He met up with ex-Blades Joey Kocur and Kelly Chase. They were his heroes. Les got his picture taken with them and was treated to a VIP evening.

Les passed away on May 24th, 2013. He will always be remembered for the amazing person he was.

Busy Regina Processing Plant Excited for Christmas Good day SARCAN Nation!

Well, winter is upon us and things are slowing down at the plants. In looking back, we’ve had a busy year in 2013, as our pounds processed has increased at both plants – which means the depots are up in containers returned. Way to go everyone for getting SARCAN successfully through another summer season. A great team effort!! We are now busy cleaning and maintaining our equipment. This is what we are usually doing this time of year – preparing ourselves for the next Christmas/New Years rush, next year-end, and the next busy summer season. A never-ending cycle for the plants.

We just celebrated Employee Recognition in October where six of my staff were honored. Once again, congratulations guys on your well-deserved recognition. It was a very special day – one that I always enjoy and I’m sure you all do too.

We are now looking forward to the Christmas break where we can get away from the hustle and bustle of work to spend some quality time with family and friends. But before that, we will be celebrating together at our annual Regina Processing Christmas Party being held (this year) at the Conexus Arts Centre. I know it will be a night of great food, great entertainment, and great fun. Plus, I can hardly wait to see if Kevin Wilcox will be showing off any of his dance moves.

The Christmas break will come and go and the one thing we all know for sure is it will be crazy busy when we get back to work in January. So I say this to all my staff – get your R&R while you are off because the Christmas/New Year’s rush will be upon us when we return.

Just a couple of reminders for the winter season:

* Please remember to keep your trailer clear of snow so our drivers can get in and out.* Don’t pile snow under your trailer or around wheels and dolly leg cranks.* If ice is present under front of trailer, please sprinkle some sand to provide traction for the drivers to remove the trailer.

Take care everyone and we’ll see you in the next Spirit!!-Chris Marr, Regina Processing Manager

Getting Ready for Telemiracle 38, March 1-2, 2014Is everyone getting excited to sell helping hands this year for Telemiracle? Last year saw the most money we’ve raised yet, at $51,000 dollars!

Telemiracle has been dubbed “Saskatchewan’s Fundraiser”, and rightfully so! All of the money that is raised in Saskatchewan goes to help families in Saskatchewan. The annual fundraiser has become a tradition for us, we all know what someone is talking about if they say “ring those phones!”

Here is a history of this Saskatchewan-made iconic fundraiser:

Originally, the Kinsmen had the idea to have a car raffle to raise funds to help with all the requests for assistance they received but the government wouldn’t allow it. So instead, they came up with the idea for a telethon. In 1977, the first telethon raised more than CAD $1 million, which at the time was considered a record for per capita telethon fund-raising in a 20-hour period (the province had a population of less than one million people at the time). The telethon passed the $2 million mark for the first time in 1983, and the $3 million mark in 2001. Telemiracle has exceeded the $4 million mark five times and $5 million three times, most recently in 2013.

Early broadcasts of the telethon featured a mix of national and international celebrities such as the late John Allan Cameron, Gloria Loring, Alan Thicke, the Irish Rovers, Arte Johnson of Laugh-In, Bob McGrath of Sesame Street, game show personality Jim Perry, his daughter Erin Perry, singer and TV host Blake Emmons (who was the telethon’s de facto host during the first few years, a post later taken over by Thicke in the 1980s), pianist Frank Mills and Saskatchewan-born motivational speaker Alvin Law. In recent years, the event has mostly attracted Canadian talent. Traditionally, the telethon alternates between the two major Saskatchewan cities of Saskatoon and Regina.

Bob McGrath, a regular fixture on Telemiracle for over 30 years, was awarded the Commemorative Medal for the Centennial of Saskatchewan for this work by the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, Lynda Haverstock, on March 3, 2006.

Telemiracle 31 (2007) broke all previous records, with an official final total of $5,604,682. This record was shattered in 2012 (Telemiracle 36) with a final total of $5,906,229. A $1.4 million bequest--the largest pledge, bequest or otherwise, in the telethon’s history--contributed to the 2012 total.
