The New India Student Championship -2018Saranathan College of Engineering co-hosted the “New
India Student Championship – 2018, a 24-hours National-level Learnathon program”, from 2nd to 3rd Feb 2018.
This Trailhead Student Championship 2018 was powered by SalesForce/Trailhead
in association with ICT Academy and was the first initiative of its kind – the first ever large learning contest. The aim of this program was
to inculcate self-learning culture among students. More than 10,000 students from 120 colleges across the country had participated in this
contest \and between them successfully completed 200,000 + learning modules in 24 hours. 100 students from CSE, ECE, EEE, ICE, IT
and MECH branches of the college had participated and taken up this challenge. Starting from 12 Noon of Feb 2nd and ending at 12 Noon
of Feb 3rd, the students had to continuously self learn various modules on offer on-line and complete the module by taking the relevant
test. The modules were a mixture of various topics in advanced technology, Soft
skills, business skills, IT developer and self-development. The tests were either MCQs
or in the form of an assignment to be completed on line. Each completed module earned the student a badge as well as some points
.

TECHNICAL ARTICLES
BIG DATAour technology is way ahead of ours ……., Software undergoes beta
testing shortly before it’s released. Beta is Latin for “still doesn’t work.”Big data is a term that describes the large volume of data – bothstructured and unstructured ,But it’s not the amount of data that’simportant. It’s what organizations do with the data that matters. Bigdata can be analyzed for insights that lead to better decisions and
strategic business moves.
Big Data History and contemporary
While the term “big data” is relatively new, the act of gathering and storing large
amounts of information for eventual analysis is ages old! The concept gained
momentum in the early 2000s when industry analyst Doug Laney articulated the now-
mainstream definition of big data as the three Vs:
Volume: Organizations collect data from a variety of sources, including business
transactions, social media and information from sensor or machine-to-machine data. In
the past, storing it would’ve been a problem – but new technologies (such as Hadoop)
have eased the burden.
Velocity: Data streams in at an unprecedented speed and must be dealt with in a timely manner. RFID
tags, sensors and smart metering are driving the need to deal with torrents of data in near-real time.
Variety: Data comes in all types of formats – from structured, numeric data in traditional databases to
unstructured text documents, email, video, audio, stock ticker data and financial transactions.
Why Is Big Data Important?
1) Cost reductions
2) Time reductions
3) New product development and optimized offerings
When you combine big data with high-powered analytics, you can accomplish business-related tasks
such as:-
a) Determining root causes of failures, issues and defects in near-real time.
Generating coupons at the point of sale based on the customer’s buying habits
With large amounts of information streaming in from countless sources, banks are facedwith finding new and innovative ways to manage big data. While it’s important tounderstand customers and boost their satisfaction, it’s equally important to minimize riskand fraud while maintaining regulatory compliance.
Educators armed with data-driven insight can make a significant impact on schoolsystems, students and curriculums. By analyzing big data, they can identify at-riskstudents, make sure students are making adequate progress, and can implement abetter system for evaluation and support of teachers and principals

When government agencies are able to harness and apply analytics to their big data, they gain significant ground when it comes to managing utilities, running agencies, dealing with traffic congestion or preventing crime. But while there are many advantages to big data, governments must also address issues of transparency and privacy.
Patient records,Treatment plans, Prescription information. When it comes to health care, everything needs to be done quickly, accurately – and, in some cases, with enough transparency to satisfy stringent industry regulations. When big data is managed effectively, health care providers can uncover hidden insights that improve patient care

A Survey of memory management techniques in
Virtualized systems• Virtualization technology allows multiple operating systems to share hardware resources of a computer system in
an isolated manner. Traditionally, memory is shared by an operating system using segmentation and pagingtechniques. With virtualization, memory partitioning and management has several new challenges. For isolated andsafe execution, hypervisors do not provide direct access to hardware resources. Lack of direct access to the memorymanagement hardware like page tables disqualifies direct usage of virtual memory solutions used on native (non-virtualized) setups. Further, aspects of dual control of the memory resource (by the guest OS and the hypervisor)and lack of semantics regarding memory usage in virtual machines present additional challenges for memorymanagement. This paper surveys different techniques of memory partitioning and management across multipleguest OSs in a virtualized environment.
• An important goal of virtualization is to increase the physical machine utilization in order to save costs. Withvarying application demand for memory and diverse memory management policies of the guest OSs, ensuringoptimal usage of memory is non-trivial. In this survey, challenges of memory management in virtualizedsystems, different memory management techniques with their implications, and optimizations to increase memoryutilization are discussed in detail.
Attention to news and its dissemination on Twitter
• In recent years, news media have been hugely disrupted by news promotion, commentary and sharing in
online, social media (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, and Reddit). This disruption has been the subject of a significant
literature that has largely used AI techniques – machine learning, text analytics and network models – to both
(i) understand the factors underlying audience attention and news dissemination on social media (e.g., effects
of popularity, type of day) and (ii) provide new tools/guidelines for journalists to better disseminate their news
via these social media. This paper provides an integrative review of the literature on the professional reporting
of news on Twitter; focusing on how journalists and news outlets use Twitter as a platform to disseminate
news, and on the factors that impact readers’ attention and engagement with that news on Twitter. Using the
precise definition of a news-tweet(i.e., divided into user, content and context features), the survey structures
the literature to reveal the main findings on features affecting audience attention to news and its
dissemination on Twitter. From this analysis, it then considers the most effective guidelines for digital
journalists to better disseminate news in the future.

Clinical epidemiology in the era of big data
• Routinely recorded health data have evolved from mere by-products of health care delivery or billing into a
powerful research tool for studying and improving patient care through clinical epidemiologic research. Big
data in the context of epidemiologic research means large interlinkable data sets within a single country or
networks of multinational databases. Several Nordic, European, and other multinational collaborations are now
well established. Advantages of big data for clinical epidemiology include improved precision of
estimates, which is especially important for reassuring (“null”) findings; ability to conduct meaningful analyses
in subgroup of patients; and rapid detection of safety signals. Big data will also provide new possibilities for
research by enabling access to linked information from biobanks, electronic medical records, patient-reported
outcome measures, automatic and semiautomatic electronic monitoring devices, and social media. The sheer
amount of data, however, does not eliminate and may even amplify systematic error. Therefore, methodologies
addressing systematic error, clinical knowledge, and underlying hypotheses are more important than ever to
ensure that the signal is discernable behind the noise.
