What does it mean?• Easter is a spring festival of new life.• It began as a pagan celebration.• For Christians, Easter celebrates the resurrection of
Jesus Christ and there are special church services. • Easter celebrates new life and this is why some of the
Easter symbols are eggs, chicks and rabbits.
When is it? • Easter isn’t on the same date each year. • It takes place on the first Sunday after the first full
moon of Spring. • It’s the first public holiday after Christmas and so
everyone has the chance to relax or go on a trip somewhere. • In the UK schools close for 2 weeks for Easter
holidays.
Chocolate eggs• For most British children, Easter means chocolate
eggs. • 90 million chocolate Easter eggs are sold in the UK
each year. • Each child receives on average 8 chocolate eggs.
Other traditions• Chocolate Easter eggs are the most popular tradition but there are
others. • Hot cross buns are typical cakes made at Easter time. They are spiced
bread rolls with raisins and have a cross shape on top. • Some places hold competitions to see who can roll an egg down a hill
without it breaking. • Chickens’ eggs are painted and decorated, and eggs are also hidden as
part of an egg hunt.
